See No Evil: Are Community Colleges Underreporting Or Nonreporting Sexual Assaults?, Songa Y. Thomas-Montford
See No Evil: Are Community Colleges Underreporting Or Nonreporting Sexual Assaults?, Songa Y. Thomas-Montford
Seton Hall University Dissertations and Theses (ETDs)
The Clery Act is a consumer protection law intended to protect students by forcing institutions of higher education to be transparent about campus crime, as the concern is that many colleges and universities are underreporting or nonreporting campus crime statistics. This study included two research questions. The first question, “What are the common themes determined in the audits concerning Clery Act violations for two-year schools?,” was addressed by conducting a deductive content analysis by reviewing each U.S. Department of Education (USDOEd) Clery Act compliance audit in the research sample. The USDOEd, Federal Aid Data Center’s public database, was the source …
Under The Skin, Silvana Silveira
Under The Skin, Silvana Silveira
Theses and Dissertations
Under the Skin is an animation depicting the struggles of Laila, a fictional ten-year-old Salvadoran girl child who risks her life crossing the desert to realize her dream of finding a better life in America.
Through Laila's experiences inside the American Immigration system, Under the Skin focuses on the vicissitudes and emotions that unaccompanied migrant children (UMC) arriving in the US across the US-Mexico border encounter.
By combining 2D animation and soundscapes with hand-made textures and paintings, this art film puts a human face to the ongoing immigration crisis. The organic, almost tactile universes created by these textures enhance the …
Further Evaluation Of A Dry Vacuuming Technique For Recovery Of Dna From Handwritten Documents, Christian Hopkins
Further Evaluation Of A Dry Vacuuming Technique For Recovery Of Dna From Handwritten Documents, Christian Hopkins
Student Theses
A previously developed, non-destructive, homemade vacuum method for collecting biological material from handwritten documents had promising DNA results for white copy paper, preserved indented writing, and latent prints. Prior to casework implementation, additional validation experiments are warranted and here the method was tested for different paper substrates. This work describes testing of notebook paper, bank deposit slips, magazine pages, and manila envelopes. The quantity of recovered DNA varied from donor to donor, but the mean quantities showed a trend that can be explained by the different sizes and surface properties of the tested paper types. The rougher paper type, like …
Beyond Social Disorganization Theory: The Influence Of Multiple Structural Determinants Of Crime On An Urban Community, Rodney C. Boyd
Beyond Social Disorganization Theory: The Influence Of Multiple Structural Determinants Of Crime On An Urban Community, Rodney C. Boyd
Seton Hall University Dissertations and Theses (ETDs)
This correlational, explanatory, cross-sectional study explains the influence of neighborhoods’ structural determinants on the rate of violent crimes in New York City’s communities. Guided by the theoretical foundation of social disorganization theory, the variables in this study included the economically disadvantaged, racial/ethnic heterogeneity, residential instability/mobility, and the level of educational attainment. The statistical analysis in this study included correlational matrix and simultaneous multiple regression model (ordinary least squares). The study consisted of 59 New York City community districts (encompassing the City’s population of 8,622,698 residents) and included the violent crime rates for 2017. The findings in this study indicated that …
A Vehicle For Crime: Ridesharing And Victimization, Lacey Roughton
A Vehicle For Crime: Ridesharing And Victimization, Lacey Roughton
Theses and Dissertations
Ridesharing services that allow the exchange of transportation services between a private vehicle owner and a passenger via smartphone applications (e.g., Uber, Lyft, and others) have revolutionized the way people travel within cities, however, ridesharing may be associated with changes in victimization risks. Few empirical studies have explored the possible connection between ridesharing and crime. This study examined the relationship between ridesharing and crime in Chicago and explored the types of crimes that occurred during ridesharing, the situational characteristics of those crimes, and how many crimes in ridesharing resulted in arrest. Crimes within taxi cabs, similar to ridesharing, were assessed …

Although cybersecurity is a major present concern, it is not a required subject in University. In response, we developed Cyber World which introduces students to eight highly important cybersecurity topics (primarily taught by none cybersecurity experts). We embedded it into our critical thinking Common Course (core curriculum) which is a team-taught first-year experience required for all students. Cyber World was first taught in Fall 2018 to a cohort of over 150 students from various majors at the University of New Haven. This article presents the evaluation of our Fall taught course. In detail, we compare the performance of Cyber World …
A Mega-Analysis Of Personality Prediction: Robustness And Boundary Conditions, Emorie Danielle Beck
A Mega-Analysis Of Personality Prediction: Robustness And Boundary Conditions, Emorie Danielle Beck
Arts & Sciences Graduate Student Theses and Dissertations
Decades of research suggest that personality is an important and robust predictor of life outcomes. However, previous investigations of personality-outcome associations have not adequately accounted for reverse causality and selection bias nor have they examined the boundary conditions of the effects, which has left the robustness conditions of personality-outcome associations unknown. The present study examines the robustness and boundary conditions of personality prediction using 14 personality characteristics to predict 14 health, social, education/work, and societal life outcomes across eight different person- and study-level moderators in 10 longitudinal panel studies in a mega-analytic framework coupled with propensity score matching to control …
Safekeeping: Slavery, Capitalism, And The Carceral State In Washington, D.C., 1830-1863, Brandon Wilson
Safekeeping: Slavery, Capitalism, And The Carceral State In Washington, D.C., 1830-1863, Brandon Wilson
Arts & Sciences Graduate Student Theses and Dissertations
By the 1830s, incarceration emerged as a two-pronged solution for racial control and economic expansion. Local and federal government built jails around the District of Columbia to detain "rowdy negro boys," men, and women, as a means to stymie their rapid movement and fuel a burgeoning domestic slave trade. People were jailed, fined, and often sold to the Deep South, providing a wellspring of capital for enslavers, justified through the lens of criminality. For the crime of petty theft, missing free papers, or in at least one case "using foul language," black people of the Washington region could find themselves …

A QUALITATIVE EVALUATION OF THE PHOENIX PROJECT: A STRENGTHS-BASED, TRAUMA-INFORMED CARE INTERVENTION FOR AFRICAN AMERICAN, TRANSITIONAL AGE, YOUNG ADULTS LIVING IN SAN FRANCISCO’S PUBLIC HOUSING COMMUNITY
Abstract
Persistent community violence has had a profound and destructive impact on many urban communities throughout the country. Post-Traumatic Stress Disorder (PTSD) resulting from community violence is becoming an increasingly frequent diagnosis of African American youth and young adults residing in San Francisco’s Bayview-Hunters Point (BVHP) community (San Francisco Department of Public Health, 2012). The Phoenix Project was designed to specifically address and heal symptoms of trauma and facilitate resilience among youth and young …

Examining The Effect Of Case And Trial Factors On Defense Attorneys' Plea Decision-Making, Kelsey S. Henderson
Examining The Effect Of Case And Trial Factors On Defense Attorneys' Plea Decision-Making, Kelsey S. Henderson
Criminology and Criminal Justice Faculty Publications and Presentations
Defense attorneys are attuned to the defendant’s likelihood of conviction at trial, based on the strength of the evidence, in forming their plea decisions. A higher threshold for conviction (i.e. unanimous jury verdict rule versus majority rule), could affect defense attorneys’ willingness to take cases to trial. In this study, we examined defense attorney decision-making by presenting defense attorneys with a hypothetical case summary in which the jury verdict rule was unanimous versus majority rule (experiment one, N = 82), and the strength of the evidence was weak versus strong (experiment two, N = 81). In experiment one, there was …
Searching For New Analgesics Without Addiction Risks, Mohammad Atiqur Rahman
Searching For New Analgesics Without Addiction Risks, Mohammad Atiqur Rahman
Theses and Dissertations
Opioids are widely used to treat acute and chronic pain. But opioid addiction to these compounds can cause social and life-threatening health problems, including the risk of overdose. In this thesis, I evaluated IBNtxA (3-iodobenzoyl naltrexamine), a novel mu opioid receptor (MOR) agonist structurally related to the classical MOR antagonist naltrexone, in drug discrimination studies in order to better understand its subjective effects and more thoroughly its abuse liability. IBNtxA represents an intriguing lead compound for preclinical drug development specifically targeting MOR splice variants, potentially creating effective analgesics with reduced side effects. These results indicate that IBNtxA produces potent antinociception …
The Effects Of Admission To Jail On Crime Rate In Mclean County, Illinois, Derek Conley
The Effects Of Admission To Jail On Crime Rate In Mclean County, Illinois, Derek Conley
Student Research – Stevenson Center
The relationship between crime and incarceration is growing in interest in the United States. The United States incarceration rate is often double or triple the rate of other Organization for Economic Co-operation and Development (OECD) countries. The hardline approach the United States has taken on crime has many citizens and academics questioning its effectiveness on achieving safer communities. Traditional theory suggests incarcerating individuals for deviant behavior reduces the crime rate through the mechanisms of incapacitation, deterrence, rehabilitation, and retribution. However, some scholars believe concentration of incarceration in neighborhoods disrupts the social fabric of the neighborhood and produces the opposite of …
Privacy As A Civil Right, Alvaro M. Bedoya
Privacy As A Civil Right, Alvaro M. Bedoya
New Mexico Law Review
As the first U.S.-born Hispanic senator, Senator Dennis Chávez of New Mexico left a rich legacy of advocacy for civil rights and civil liberties. In this lecture, the fourth U.S. Senator Dennis Chávez Endowed Lecture on Law and Civil Rights, I explore an idea at the intersection of those two bodies of law: the right to privacy. In 2020, the hallmark of surveillance is its ubiquity; “everyone is watched.” Unfortunately, this discourse erases the fact that, across American history, the burdens of government surveillance have fallen overwhelmingly on the shoulders of immigrants, heretics, people of color, the poor, and anyone …

Genetic Evidence, Maoa, And State V. Yepez, Nita A. Farahany, Roderick T. Kennedy, Brandon L. Garrett
New Mexico Law Review
This amicus brief offers two main contributions. First, we describe how MAOA studies based on the prior “candidate-gene approach” are unreliable due to inherent flaws in the methodology, leading to inconsistencies in replication. Second, the general scientific consensus has emerged that the earlier MAOA studies (upon which the defense experts relied) are now an outdated method of studying psychiatric genetics. Third, to the extent that recent studies adopting the more rigorous genomewide association studies (GWAS) have attempted to replicate the earlier findings of MAOA candidate-gene studies, they have found no reliable correlation between MAOA and violence.
The Problem Of Good Intentions: Challenges Arising From State Mandated University-Wide Sexual Misconduct Reporting, Andrew Little, Chris Riley
The Problem Of Good Intentions: Challenges Arising From State Mandated University-Wide Sexual Misconduct Reporting, Andrew Little, Chris Riley
Management Sciences
Legislatures and regulators struggle to create effective legal mechanisms to address the misreporting and underreporting of sexual misconduct on college campuses. The problems are clear: how does the law balance the desire to fully support victims of sexual misconduct by providing access to supportive measures and complaint resolution options, while also honoring the desire of some victims not to have private information shared with others? While some employees have failed to report known instances of sexual misconduct based on inappropriate grounds, others do so based on a desire to respect the victim’s wishes. How should these problems, which may stem …
Using Charter Damages To Provide Meaningful Redress And Promote State Accountability: A Re-Examination Of The Omar Khadr Case, Katharine June Fisher
Using Charter Damages To Provide Meaningful Redress And Promote State Accountability: A Re-Examination Of The Omar Khadr Case, Katharine June Fisher
LLM Theses
In July 2017, the Government of Canada reportedly paid Omar Khadr $10.5 million to settle his civil suit. Khadr sought damages under the Canadian Charter of Rights and Freedoms resulting from Canada’s active participation in human rights breaches during his imprisonment at Guantánamo Bay. Although the Charter damages remedy serves critically important public law functions, it is not achieving its full potential in many cases. Using Khadr as a case study, I apply the framework developed in Vancouver (City) v Ward to analyze what Khadr’s entitlement to Charter damages might have been if his civil claim had not settled. The …

Reframing And Strategic Transformation, Kees Dorst, Rodger Watson
DRS Biennial Conference Series
To really embed innovation, the impact of design should move beyond the project level and impact the strategy of the organisation, and possibly its processes and structures. In this paper we will use a case study to investigate what design can do to help create such deep changes. The case study is an early social design project, which allows us to take a longitudinal perspective: ten years on, what has actually happened with the new frames and ideas of the initial project? What has followed? Has this project influenced strategic innovation? Or did it all come to naught? We will …

Understanding Dynamics Of Identity Navigation In Social Design, Eva Knutz, Thomas Markussen, Valentijn Visch, Ed Tan
DRS Biennial Conference Series
The aim of this paper is to initiate an interdisciplinary dialogue between social design and narrative theory in understanding how vulnerable families navigate personal and shared identities. To exemplify this, we draw upon results from a design research project that introduces board games in prisons to help children develop bonds with their incarcerated fathers. In our case study we offer a method of analysis that enable design researchers to delve into the complex field of identity navigation. Further, we offer a focused reflection arguing that the vulnerability of these families can be conceived as family identities being broken or challenged. …

Witnessing Intimate Partner Violence Across Contexts: Mental Health, Delinquency, And Dating Violence Outcomes Among Mexican Heritage Youth, Lela Rankin Williams, Heidi Adams Rueda
Social Work Faculty Publications
Immigrant Mexican American (MA) youth are at greater risk for violence exposure due to risk factors associated with migration–postmigration processes and as they settle into urban U.S. communities marked by crime and poverty. Less is known about the contexts of this exposure. Specifically, what are the ecological contexts in which youth witness intimate partner violence (IPV), how do these experiences differ by immigration generational status, and what is the impact on youth’s externalizing and internalizing behaviors? MA adolescents (N = 279; 15–17 years, M = 16.17, SD = 0.81) from the Southwest United States participated in an online survey. …

Although social media includes opposing views that have unified against BLM, it has been responsible for massive growth of the movement. In this paper, I will show how social media plays a pivotal role in BLM by scaling up the movement and encouraging more nuanced and diverse perspectives on BLM to develop. Although all social media platforms are used to promote BLM, my examination will focus mainly on Twitter because it is the primary platform analyzed by scholars that investigates the growth of BLM. What MLK was able to accomplish by tapping into the new medium of television is now …

When Two Health Emergencies Collide: Planning For The Crisis Health Needs Of Opioid Abusers And The Psychological Consequences Of Covid-19, Amanda Rehn
Master's Projects and Capstones
The COVID-19 pandemic has created new barriers for people suffering from mental illness and substance use disorders. From its expected major impact on mental health, social distance measures imposed worldwide are themselves risk factors for increased mental health problems, including opioid abuse. Since drug treatment for opioid use disorders is highly regulated by health authorities, people with opioid use disorders could experience difficulty accessing treatment, which should be considered an essential treatment during the COVID-19 pandemic. The accelerated transition away from in person appointments and group therapy because of social distancing calls for health systems and community collaborations and adjustments …

Program Evaluation: Bring Change To Mind High School Club, Rachel Goldberg
Master's Projects and Capstones
Introduction. Mental illness (MI) stigma is common and causes adverse consequences such as reduced self-esteem and discrimination in housing and employment. Bring Change to Mind (BC2M), a national non-profit organization, strives to reduce this stigma through their high school club program. The evaluation goals were to assess the program’s operations and measure club members’ and advisors’ attitudes and perceptions around mental health (MH) and MI.
Methods. Qualtrics surveys were used to gather information from general club members (GCMs) (N=645), club advisors (N=97), and graduating seniors (N=57). BC2M staff held 52 small group discussions with club leaders. Data analysis was conducted …
