The Unpaid Internship: Benefits, Drawbacks, And Legal Issues, Philip C. Rothschild, Connor L. Rothschild
The Unpaid Internship: Benefits, Drawbacks, And Legal Issues, Philip C. Rothschild, Connor L. Rothschild
Administrative Issues Journal
This article hopes to clear up some of the confusion surrounding unpaid internships by discussing who participates in such internships, the merits and drawbacks relative to paid internships, and the relevant legal issues. This summary of existing research provides several key insights, which are of interest to potential interns as well as educators. For students, the literature suggests that unpaid internships are different from their paid counterparts in a variety of ways and pose certain risks that paid internships do not. On an institutional level, this paper documents the unique legal environment surrounding the unpaid internship and notes the unique …

Going Gunless, Dru Stevenson
Going Gunless, Dru Stevenson
Brooklyn Law Review
Firearm policy in the United States is subject to longstanding political gridlock. Up to now, most of the legal academic literature has focused on the constitutionality of various—or any—regulations regarding firearm possession, sales, or usage. This article inverts the problem and proposes a system for voluntary registration and certification of nonowners, those who want to waive or renounce their Second Amendment rights as a matter of personal conviction. The proposed system is analogous to both the registration of conscientious objectors during wartime conscriptions, and the newer suicide prevention laws whereby individuals can add their names to a do-not-sell list for …
Not All Violence In Relationships Is "Domestic Violence", Tamara Kuennen
Not All Violence In Relationships Is "Domestic Violence", Tamara Kuennen
Brooklyn Law Review
This article argues that not all violence in intimate relationships is “domestic violence.” Domestic violence is a pattern of acts perpetrated with a motive: power and control over another. National anti-domestic violence organizations, activists and advocates, and a number of academics agree on this construct of domestic violence. Law, on the other hand, requires neither a pattern nor a motive; it defines domestic violence to include any single act of violence in a relationship, regardless of the perpetrator’s intent. Because legal intervention is the primary intervention for domestic violence today, feminist legal scholars have sought to reform the law to …
Risk And Protective Factor Specific To African American Youth And Adolescents: A Systematic Review, Darius Reed, Raymond Dewayne Adams
Risk And Protective Factor Specific To African American Youth And Adolescents: A Systematic Review, Darius Reed, Raymond Dewayne Adams
Journal of Family Strengths
Although existing suicide literature proposes that simply being African American protects against suicide (Nguyen et al., 2017; Street et al., 2012), few studies offer practical insights at mitigating suicidal ideations among African American children and adolescents let alone through a social work perspective (Reed, 2019). As the largest provider of mental health services in the United States (American Counseling Association, 2018), the field of social work research has understudied this phenomenon. While it is true that African Americans have experienced lower rates of suicide when compared to the general population (CDC, 2019), research has not compared the risk and protective …

Of Sex Crimes And Fencelines: How Recognition Of Environmental Justice Communities As Crime Victims Under State And Federal Law Can Help Secure Environmental Justice, Joshua Ozymy, Melissa L. Jarrell
Pace Environmental Law Review
Environmental justice communities throughout the United States continue to face disproportionate health burdens from living near industrial sources of pollution. Such burdens were caused by historically racist public policies and continue to be perpetuated by inadequate regulatory responses at the federal and state level. State and federal law has increasingly recognized an emerging set of rights afforded to victims of crime in court proceedings. We argue that members of environmental justice communities should be viewed as crime victims and have the same rights applied as other victims of violent crime. Using case examples under the federal Crime Victims’ Rights Act …

Teachers Reflection On The Factors Contributing Their Success In Conducting Action Research, Esa Maulisakina Wilma Ariyani, Moh. Adnan Latief
Jurnal Pendidikan: Teori, Penelitian, dan Pengembangan
This study aimed to explore the experiences of public junior high school English teachers in Malang in conducting classroom action research in terms of the factors that contribute to their success in conducting action research. The main data of this study were collected through individual semi-structured interviews administered to 3 public junior high school English teachers in Malang, Indonesia. The findings suggest that teachers’ eagerness in helping their students learning better as well as improving themselves to be better teacher may be the ‘it’ factor contributing to their success in conducting action research. On the basis of aforementioned findings implications …

Usklajevanje Poklicnega In Zasebnega Življenja Podjetnikov V Sloveniji: Empirična Preverba, Renata Adlešič, Anja Svetina Nabergoj, Miha Cimperman
Economic and Business Review
Due to the nature of work-life balance, entrepreneurs cope greater challenges – the boundary between the two areas is heavily blurred in terms of time and responsibility. Understanding the mechanisms of balancing all entrepreneurial roles (at work and in the family) and the factors that influence the success of balancing is crucial for entrepreneurs and all those who think about the entrepreneurial path, as well as for those who form public policies to support and promote entrepreneurship. The main aim of the paper is to investigate the impact of the variables identified in the theoretical verification on satisfaction with work-life …

An Examination of the Sociocultural, Religious, and Racial Adjustment Experiences of Jamaican Professionals in South Florida. Sharon Ritchie-Brown, 2020: Applied Dissertation, Nova Southeastern University, Abraham S. Fischler College of Education and School of Criminal Justice. Keywords: immigrants, professional occupations, ethnic groups, culture, social adjustment
This transcendental phenomenological research was designed to advance an understanding of the adjustment experiences of Jamaican immigrant professionals in South Florida, United States. While the majority of present literature examines acculturation and adjustment experiences of other immigrant groups, there is not enough literature regarding the adjustment experiences of Jamaican immigrant professionals who have made significant contributions …
Suicide Risks Among Children And Youth: Examining Predictors Of Suicide Ideation, The Disparate Suicide Risks For Certain Ethnic Groups, And How Best To Support Families
Journal of Family Strengths
This special edition of JFS underscores research on suicide risks among children and youth in the United States. The rate of death by suicide has increased for youth aged 10-24 by 50% over the last decade (Curtain, 2020). Death by suicide is the second leading cause of death for youth aged 10-24 (American Academy of Child and Adolescent Psychiatry, 2018; Herons, 2019). Supporting evidence indicates that most children and youth who have attempted suicide have a major mental illness, such as depression. Risk factors associated with suicide may include, but are not limited to, impulsivity, feelings of helplessness, rejection, prior …

Sensitivity Analysis Of An Agent-Based Simulation Model Using Reconstructability Analysis, Andey M. Nunes, Martin Zwick, Wayne Wakeland
Complex Systems Faculty Publications and Presentations
Reconstructability analysis, a methodology based on information theory and graph theory, was used to perform a sensitivity analysis of an agent-based model. The NetLogo BehaviorSpace tool was employed to do a full 2k factorial parameter sweep on Uri Wilensky’s Wealth Distribution NetLogo model, to which a Gini-coefficient convergence condition was added. The analysis identified the most influential predictors (parameters and their interactions) of the Gini coefficient wealth inequality outcome. Implications of this type of analysis for building and testing agent-based simulation models are discussed.
Online Victimization, Social Media Utilization, And Cyber Crime Prevention Measures, Claudia San Miguel, Kristina Morales, Marcus Antonius Ynalvez
Online Victimization, Social Media Utilization, And Cyber Crime Prevention Measures, Claudia San Miguel, Kristina Morales, Marcus Antonius Ynalvez
Asia-Pacific Social Science Review
Engaging concepts germane to lifestyle-routine activities theory (LRAT), this study examines how social media (SM) utilization shapes online victimization experience. It also explores how considerations about online prevention measures play a moderating role between utilization and victimization. This study focuses on the Facebook® utilization of a subset of the U.S. population hitherto understudied in cybercrime prevention studies: Hispanics. An online survey was used to collect information pertaining to respondents’ online victimization experience, social media utilization, and aspects of prevention measures. Logistic and negative binomial regression analyses were performed on two measures of online victimization (ever victimized and frequency of victimization). …
Unique Characteristics Of Bias Crimes Committed By Males Or Females In The United States, Rebecca Stotzer, Meripa T. Godinet, Janet T. Davidson
Unique Characteristics Of Bias Crimes Committed By Males Or Females In The United States, Rebecca Stotzer, Meripa T. Godinet, Janet T. Davidson
Journal of Hate Studies
Despite increased research on women’s criminal offending patterns, research on women’s involvement in bias crimes is almost nonexistent. This study examines bias crime incidences that are considered crimes against persons (e.g., assault, murder, robbery, sexual assault) collected in the National Incidence-based Reporting System from 2009–2012 to determine what features characterize crimes committed by men or women. Results indicate that female bias crime suspects choose different victims than male suspects; female suspects are more likely than men to target friends and family members, more likely to target other women, and more frequently commit crimes based on race/ethnicity/national origin than religion or …

The Historical Facts About Hate Crime In America The Social Worker’S Role In Victim Recovery And Community Restoration, Mitchell A. Kaplan, Marian M. Inguanzo
Journal of Hate Studies
Attitudes and belief systems associated with social intolerance and racial bigotry have been part of American society for generations. Analysis of historical records reveals a number of examples of how these social forces have shaped society’s reaction to those they consider to be not part of the mainstream culture. A review of research documented in the literature on social psychology indicates that individuals who hold strong prejudicial beliefs about others based solely on race, religion, sexual orientation, or ancestry often express those feelings in ways that lead to the commission of criminal acts known as hate crimes. The proliferation of …
Anti-Lgbtq Hate: An Analysis Of Situational Variables, Jill Kehoe
Anti-Lgbtq Hate: An Analysis Of Situational Variables, Jill Kehoe
Journal of Hate Studies
The current study aimed to augment the scant body of literature on anti-LGBTQ hate by providing an in-depth examination of anti-LGBTQ hate incident situational characteristics including offender substance use, number of offenders, crime location, and victim-offender relationship. Analysis of situational dynamic variables provided support for the notion that anti-LGBTQ hate is a distinct type of criminal incident. Significantly increased levels of offender substance use, crimes perpetrated by multiple offenders, crimes perpetrated by acquaintances, and crimes taking place in open spaces substantiates the theory that anti-LGBTQ hate is qualitatively unique, typified by different characteristics than other forms of crime. The data …
Exploring The Relationship Between Anger, Aggression, And Perpetrator Substance Use In The Commission Of Sexual Offenses, Dominique Rivera
Exploring The Relationship Between Anger, Aggression, And Perpetrator Substance Use In The Commission Of Sexual Offenses, Dominique Rivera
Student Theses
This study examined the potential association between perpetrator substance use, anger, and aggressive behavior in the commission of sexual crimes. The sample included 246 adult males convicted of rape (n = 54) or child molestation (n = 192). Descriptive statistics revealed that 64.6% of the individuals in this sample (n = 159) were intoxicated at the time of the offense. Results showed that perpetrators who used substances at the time of the offense were more likely to exhibit aggressive behavior toward the victim (e.g., weapon use, verbal abuse) than those who did not. Offenders with higher pervasive anger scores were …
Unity Starts With U: A Case Study Of A Counter-Hate Campaign Through The Use Of Social Media Platforms, Candace Leung, Richard Frank
Unity Starts With U: A Case Study Of A Counter-Hate Campaign Through The Use Of Social Media Platforms, Candace Leung, Richard Frank
Journal of Hate Studies
Hate has been a growing concern with hate-groups and individuals using the Internet, or more specifically, social media platforms, to globalize hate. Since these social media platforms can connect users around the world, hate-organizations are using these connections as opportunities to recruit candidates and spread their propaganda. Without opposing views, these extreme viewpoints can establish themselves as legitimate and then be used to incite hate in individuals. Thus, these extreme viewpoints must be countered by similar messages to discourage this online hate, and one such way is to use the same platforms through grassroots movements. This paper presents a case …
