A Pareto Principle Analysis Of The Nba: How Production Distribution Affects Team Success, Cole Berner, Joshua M. Lupinek, Jim Arkell, Margaret Keiper

Global Sport Business Journal

The Pareto Principle, also known as the 80/20 rule, states that in general “80 percent of consequences stem from 20 percent of causes” (Bunkley, 2008, p. 1). This research examines the relationship between the 80/20 rule and the National Basketball Association (NBA) with respect to the distribution of individual player production through secondary data analysis and linear regression modeling. While there are only so many superstars to go around, this research examines the Pareto Principle as an analytic dashboard metric that league executives can look at to try to find success in the “Big Three Era.” Regression modeling from ten …

Learning To Jump Like Corbin Bleu: The Physics Behind Jump Rope, Caroline Camfield Jan 2020

Learning To Jump Like Corbin Bleu: The Physics Behind Jump Rope, Caroline Camfield

Mahurin Honors College Capstone Experience/Thesis Projects

This project seeks to determine how engineering can be applied to the sport of jump rope so that athletes may better understand the science behind the sport and apply it to improve their performance in “speed jumping.” This style of jump rope consists of a jumper alternating their feet, with the rope passing under them with each step. Several types of ropes, handles, rope lengths, and widths between a jumper’s handles were tested to determine correlations between each variable and different STEM concept. These findings were then transitioned into a lesson plan so that both the jumpers and coaches could …

The Birth Of A Monster: An Open Discussion On Anti-Blackness Segregation To Present, Nichelle Womble Jan 2020

The Birth Of A Monster: An Open Discussion On Anti-Blackness Segregation To Present, Nichelle Womble

St. Thomas Law Review

Racism and discrimination remain topics of focus that continue to shape the lives, experiences, and results of the American people. These aspects continue creating privileges, systematically and socially, for Whites while disadvantaging Blacks. Today’s White person claims to not see color, but is that the truth? Perhaps they do not see color, but maybe a more honest statement is that they do not see blackness. Where did it all begin? To answer these questions, this paper explores “The Birth of a Monster,” better known as “whiteness,” by encompassing white privilege and supremacy. It will paint a picture from segregation to …

Covid-19 In Indigenous Communities: Five Protective Factors Of “Exercising” Sovereignty, Kelsey Leonard, Natalie Welch, Alisse Ali-Joseph Jan 2020

Covid-19 In Indigenous Communities: Five Protective Factors Of “Exercising” Sovereignty, Kelsey Leonard, Natalie Welch, Alisse Ali-Joseph

Faculty Publications

Indigenous Peoples have an inherent responsibility and right to “exercising” sovereignty - the practice of sport and physical activity in performance of our cultural, political, and spiritual citizenship (Ali-Joseph 2018). During the COVID-19 pandemic, access to and equity (inequity) in sport and physical activity has been felt (physically, spiritually, politically) within Indigenous communities. We implement an abundance-based Indigenous approach to understanding Indigenous Peoples’ responses to the coronavirus pandemic through sport and its far-reaching ramifications in Indian Country. In response to the COVID-19 pandemic we have seen Indigenous Peoples utilize social media such as Facebook and TikTok to reimagine Indigenous sport …

Solar Bait: How U.S. States Attract Solar Investments From Large Corporations, Jed J. Cohen, Levan Elbakidze, Randall Jackson Jan 2020

Solar Bait: How U.S. States Attract Solar Investments From Large Corporations, Jed J. Cohen, Levan Elbakidze, Randall Jackson

Regional Research Institute Working Papers

Past solar adoption literature has focused primarily on households without significant attention to the potential of commercial properties as sites for solar generation. We examine firms’ decisions to install solar panels on their properties using state and firm level data from the U.S. We are interested in the effects of state level characteristics, including policies and regulations, on firm decisions regarding solar investments. We find that state characteristics that influence the return-on-investment from solar installations, most notably solar intensity, are important for commercial adoption decisions. Further, the results suggest that certain state level policies, including solar carve-outs in renewable portfolio …

Implementation Of A Novel Return-To-Ride Concussion Management Policy For Collegiate Hunter/Jumper Equestrian Athletes, Devon Serrano, Velyn Wu

Clinical Practice in Athletic Training

A concussion return-to-participation protocol specific to equestrian is critical in the safe return of athletes to their respective discipline. When the care of the hunter/jumper equestrian teams became the responsibility of the Sports Medicine staff at Sweet Briar College, a return-to-participation concussion management policy was needed to ensure the safety of the equestrian student-athletes. A quality-improvement project focusing on the development of a “Return-to-Ride” protocol was started in the fall semester of 2016. The Sports Medicine staff collaborated with the Sweet Briar College riding center to create and ensure compliance of the protocol. The intended aim of developing this protocol …

An Exploration Of Contributing Factors Of Student Fitness Employee Job Satisfaction In Campus Recreation, John Davenport Jan 2020

An Exploration Of Contributing Factors Of Student Fitness Employee Job Satisfaction In Campus Recreation, John Davenport

University of the Pacific Theses and Dissertations

This qualitative study explored what factors contributed to a student employee’s satisfaction with their job in the fitness sector of campus recreation. Campus recreation programs offer many on-campus jobs for students, with a focus on student development and community. Despite much research being done on job satisfaction, there is a noticeable gap when it comes to job satisfaction in campus recreation fitness. Findings from nine semi-structured phone interviews across three universities in California, Louisiana, and Mississippi have yielded three main elements: people, job qualities, and rewards. First, the findings indicated that supervisors, teammates, and patrons are the people that contribute …

African American Males' Perceptions On Increasing Retention And Graduation Rates, Edwan L. O'Neal Jan 2020

African American Males' Perceptions On Increasing Retention And Graduation Rates, Edwan L. O'Neal

Walden Dissertations and Doctoral Studies

African American males have the lowest retention and graduation rates of all races and genders. The problem at the local study site was that lower number of African American males from two public 4-year institutions were graduating from college as compared to all other ethnic groups and genders. The purpose of this qualitative study was to identify college experiences that had a positive impact on retention and graduation, as perceived by African American males. Tinto's persistence theory, describing the development of student identity and student retention in higher education, guided the study. The research questions explored African American male students' …

Sports Law—Stealing Signs With Binoculars, Or Other Equipment, In An Ncaa Baseball Game Is Not Adequately Addressed In The Rules: A Case For Expanded Penalties In Ncaa Baseball For Unethical And Unsportsmanlike Conduct, James T. Masteralexis, Sharianne Walker

Western New England Law Review

Stealing signs from the catcher or base coaches in baseball, if done by the naked eye, is not prohibited by the rules of both Major League Baseball (MLB) and National Collegiate Athletic Association (NCAA) Baseball. Recently, the proliferation of electronic devices such as computers, Apple watches, tablet computers, and television cameras throughout MLB and NCAA ballparks have raised concerns about using these devices to steal signs. In February 2019, it was reported that MLB was amending its rules to strengthen prohibitions for electronic sign stealing. The NCAA also has rules prohibiting the use of video and television cameras to steal …

1. Rationale for the new program, definition of the focus of the program and a brief description of its disciplinary purpose and significance, including unique features of the program (e.g., international study, service learning, research, etc.).:

The Management and Marketing department proposes to offer a new Management major. The current International Business Management major requires students to select an emphasis in either Global Markets or International Human Resources.

In contrast, the new …

Co-Authoring Strategies In Business Research, Deirdre Mcquillan (Ed)

Books/Book Chapters

students to help assist their peers along the academic writing journey. This handbook addresses co-authoring strategies in business research. The students are discovering much to debate about co-authoring in academic writing. While co-authoring has shown to lead to higher research output and productivity for researchers, there are challenges. Not least ensuring a fair contribution of each author can be expected in an ethical approach. Recognising different co-authoring strategies is very helpful before embarking on a co-writing exercise. Strategic approaches to co-authoring might be because of multidisciplinary expertise that can speed up the socially constructed process of developing a paper. It …
