A Preliminary Examination Of Sponsorship Motivations And Leveraging In Motor Sports, Carol L. Bruneau
A Preliminary Examination Of Sponsorship Motivations And Leveraging In Motor Sports, Carol L. Bruneau
AMTP Proceedings 2020
Sports sponsorships have become an increasingly large investment for many organizations. IEG (2018) has forecast that in 2018, total global sponsorship spending would be approximately $65.8 billion, with US sponsors contributing $24.28 billion. Close to 70%, or almost $46 billion, of total sponsorship spending will be directed towards the sponsoring of sports events, leagues, teams and individual sports personalities. This paper is a exploratory examination of sponsorships in INDYCAR racing based on participant observation over nine years of viewing INDYCAR races live and on television. Four specific sponsorship examples will be discussed to highlight sponsors’ motivations for sponsorship and how …

Application Of Rigour And Credibility In Qualitative Document Analysis: Lessons Learnt From A Case Study, Leanne M. Wood, Bernadette Sebar, Nerina Vecchio
The Qualitative Report
This paper probes functions and processes of qualitative document analysis (QDA), a method widely used in case study research. It firstly demonstrates the application of a QDA framework to inform a case study of women entrepreneurs in rural Australia; and provides insights into the lessons learnt, including strengths and limitations of QDA. Secondly, the paper provides guidelines for novice researchers seeking to use thematic analysis in a QDA process, arguing for rigour in naming assumptions and explicitness about the procedures employed. The paper contributes to discussion in the literature that positions QDA not only as a convenient tool, but as …

International Journal of Exercise Science: Conference Proceedings
Bioelectrical Impedance Analysis (BIA) is a popular method of body composition assessment; however, validity of BIA is thought to be highly dependent on adhering to pre-test criteria, including the abstinence from exercise prior to testing. PURPOSE: The purpose of this study was to determine if acute, localized resistance exercise (RE) compromises the validity of BIA total body composition estimates. METHODS: In a crossover design, 16 healthy, resistance trained adults, including 7 females (age: 22.7 ± 1.9 y; height: 165.4 ± 8.4 cm; body mass: 62.1 ± 10.9 kg; body fat: 25.9 ± 7.3%) and 9 males (age: 24.3 …

Sex Difference In Cardiorespiratory Stress From High-Intensity Interval Exercise, Paolo Miguel Salvador, Mauricio Martinez, Joaquin Gonzales, Eric Rivas
International Journal of Exercise Science: Conference Proceedings
High-intensity interval exercise is time efficient and has similar cardiorespiratory health benefits as moderate-intensity continuous exercise. However, the prescription of high-intensity exercise may differ between men and women due to sex differences in cardiovascular function. PURPOSE: Therefore, the objective of this study was to examine whether sex differences exist for absolute and relative oxygen uptake (VO2) and heart rate (HR) when exercise was performed at a percentage of maximal cycling work rate measured in watts (Wmax). METHODS: We recruited 8 active college-aged participants (5 men, 3 women). Participants completed an incremental maximal exercise test on a …

No Sex Effect On Cerebral Blood Flow Hemodynamics During Post-Exercise Hyperthermia, Mauricio Martinez, Kyleigh Allie, Paolo Miguel Salvador, Lauren Schoech, Eric Rivas
International Journal of Exercise Science: Conference Proceedings
Females have greater orthostatic intolerance and increased adrenergic sensitivity to passive heat stress compared to males. It is unknown how cerebral blood flow is affected during post-exercise recovery from exercise heat stress. PURPOSE: We tested the hypothesis that females would have lower middle cerebral artery blood flow velocity (MCAvmean) during recovery from exercise hyperthermia. METHODS: Twenty-two healthy active adult (7 day activity: 8620±3008 steps/day; VO2max: 49±10 mL/kg/min) subjects (11M/11F, 22.4±4.9y, 169±7.55cm, 68.3±13kg) exercised at a similar metabolic heat production (M: 7.1±1.5 W/kg and F: 6.9±1.4 W/kg; P=0.32) for 60 minutes (cycle ergometer) in cool (24±0.0 ⁰C; 14.4±3.6 …

Impact Of Fluid Consumption On Estimates Of Intracellular, Extracellular, And Total Body Water From Multi-Frequency Bioelectrical Impedance Analysis, Marqui Benavides, Baylor A. Johnson, Patrick S. Harty, Matthew T. Stratton, Jacob Dellinger, Robert W. Smith, Abegale D. Williams, Christian Rodriguez, Sarah White, Grant M. Tinsley
International Journal of Exercise Science: Conference Proceedings
Multi-frequency bioelectrical impedance analysis (MFBIA) is able to distinguish between total body water (TBW), extracellular water (ECW) and intracellular water (ICW). Low-frequency currents are thought to primarily pass through ECW, while high-frequency currents pass through all body fluids (i.e., TBW). ICW can then be estimated by subtracting ECW from TBW. As such, MFBIA may have utility for monitoring health conditions resulting in water retention within specific fluid compartments. However, the sensitivity of fluid estimates from MFBIA is not fully established. PURPOSE: To evaluate the effects of acute fluid ingestion on body water estimates produced by a MFBIA analyzer. METHODS …

Females Have An Increased Sensitivity To Thermal Stress During Matched Exercise Metabolic Heat Production, Lauren Schoech, Kyleigh Allie, Paolo Miguel Salvador, Mauricio Martinez, Eric Rivas
International Journal of Exercise Science: Conference Proceedings
Females report greater sensitivity in pain and cold exposures. PURPOSE: It is unclear how thermal sensitivity is affected when the change for internal temperature (ΔTin) and metabolic heat production (MHprod) are matched during exposure to hot conditions. This project tested the hypothesis that females have enhanced sensitivity to thermal stress during exercise hyperthermia when ΔTin and MHprod is matched. METHODS:Twenty-two healthy active (7 day activity: 8620±3008 steps/day; VO2max: 49±10 mL/kg/min) adults (11M/11F, 22.4±4.9y, 169±7.6cm, 68.3±13kg) exercised at similar MHprod (M: 7.1±1.5 W/kg, F: 6.9±1.4 W/kg; P=0.32) for 60 min (cycle ergometer) …

International Journal of Exercise Science: Conference Proceedings
Body composition is an integral component of physiology and pathology, as well as an indication of how the musculoskeletal system changes over time in response to training and/or nutritional modifications. Two common methods of estimating body composition include bioelectrical impedance analysis (BIA) and dual-energy X-ray absorptiometry (DXA). There is a debate regarding the agreement between these two methods, and it is thought that the population being tested may influence the similarity of estimates obtained by these technologies. Limited data comparing these two methodologies in athletic populations are available. PURPOSE: The purpose of this study was to take examine the agreement …
Exaggerated Pulsatility During Exercise Is Associated With Reduced Muscle Strength And Quality In Elderly Hypertensives, Stephen M. Fischer, Arun Maharaj, Arturo Figueroa
Exaggerated Pulsatility During Exercise Is Associated With Reduced Muscle Strength And Quality In Elderly Hypertensives, Stephen M. Fischer, Arun Maharaj, Arturo Figueroa
International Journal of Exercise Science: Conference Proceedings
It is well-established that hypertensive individuals have an exaggerated systolic blood pressure in response to exercise. Leg muscle weakness is related to greater left ventricular (LV) mass in hypertensive individuals via exaggerated increases in blood pressure during aerobic exercise. Pulse pressure (PP) is an indicator of LV pulsatile hemodynamic load. Increased PP is associated with LV hypertrophy and dysfunction in older adults. PURPOSE: To determine differences in PP responses to resistance exercise in normotensive versus hypertensive older adults and the influence of lean mass and strength on these responses. METHODS: Nine normotensive (NTN) and 11 hypertensive (HTN) older adults (NTN …

Body composition assessment devices are commonly employed to track changes associated with exercise or nutritional interventions. However, many individuals undergo body composition assessments with little to no pre-testing standardization of dietary intake or physical activity, potentially introducing error into their results. PURPOSE: To examine the validity of unstandardized body composition assessments relative to standardized assessments using three common body composition assessment devices. METHODS: Twenty-three resistance-trained males (Mean ± SD; 21.6 ± 2.6 years; 71.3 ± 6.8 kg; 177.4 ± 5.9 cm; 17.4 ± 4.1% DXA-derived percent body fat [%BF]) underwent paired body composition assessments via dual-energy x-ray absorptiometry …

Body Fat Gain Automatically Increases Lean Mass By Changing The Fat-Free Component Of Adipose Tissue, Matthew T. Stratton, Patrick S. Harty, Robert W. Smith, Jacob Dellinger, Baylor A. Johnson, Marqui Benavides, Abegale D. Williams, Sarah White, Christian Rodriguez, Grant M. Tinsley
Body Fat Gain Automatically Increases Lean Mass By Changing The Fat-Free Component Of Adipose Tissue, Matthew T. Stratton, Patrick S. Harty, Robert W. Smith, Jacob Dellinger, Baylor A. Johnson, Marqui Benavides, Abegale D. Williams, Sarah White, Christian Rodriguez, Grant M. Tinsley
International Journal of Exercise Science: Conference Proceedings
Estimating alterations in lean mass in response to various training interventions is a primary concern for many investigations. However, previous reports have suggested that lean mass estimates from weight loss interventions may be significantly altered by attempting to correct for changes in the fat-free component of adipose tissue (FFAT). This component, consisting primarily of water and protein, has been estimated as ~15% of adipose tissue (AT) mass. While a preliminary examination of this correction method has been conducted in the instance of weight loss, it has yet to be investigated after a period of purposeful weight gain and resistance training. …

Sex Dimorphism In Muscle Damage-Induced Inflammation, Casey Appell, Mohamed Fokar, Jakob Vingren, Hui-Ying Luk
International Journal of Exercise Science: Conference Proceedings
Evidence suggests that estrogen can provide a protective effect against muscle damage-induced inflammation. However, to date, no study has directly compared the muscle damage-induced intramuscular cytokines gene expression between men and women. Purpose: The purpose was to determine the intramuscular cytokine response to a bout of unaccustomed eccentric exercise in men and women. Methods: Untrained men (n=8, 22 ± 3y) and women (n=8, 20 ± 1y) completed a session of 80 unilateral maximal eccentric knee extensions. Vastus lateralis samples were collected and analyzed for gene expression of Interleukin (IL)-6, IL-10, IL-15, tumor necrosis factor (TNF)-α, and transforming growth factor (TGF)-ß …
