Exploring The Role Of Racial Associations Within Life And Psychiatry: The Dissociation Of Explicit And Implicit, Dervin Junior Cunningham Jan 2020

Exploring The Role Of Racial Associations Within Life And Psychiatry: The Dissociation Of Explicit And Implicit, Dervin Junior Cunningham

Yale Medicine Thesis Digital Library

Objective: In the past decade there has been increased interest in understanding racial

disparities throughout the world. In doing so, racial associations and biases have been

found to be one potential etiology of these disparities. Particularly in the medical field,

trainings and institutions often have providers rely on self-reported racial associations as

a means to understanding their biases. However, there is little known on how

explicit/self-reported associations relate to implicit associations and clinical behavior,

specifically within mental healthcare. This study aims to understand the relationship

between explicit/self-reported statements and psychiatric providers’ implicit racial

associations.

Methods: Psychiatric providers were asked to …

Evidence-Based Practice Guideline: Breastfeeding Support Of The Active Duty Servicewoman, Heidi A. Koslo Jan 2020

Evidence-Based Practice Guideline: Breastfeeding Support Of The Active Duty Servicewoman, Heidi A. Koslo

Walden Dissertations and Doctoral Studies

There is no policy on breastfeeding support of the active duty military servicewoman at the targeted military treatment facility, and no global policy serving active duty personnel applicable at the Department of Defense and Defense Health Agency (DoD/DHA) level to span across branches of the U.S. military. Nurses, as members of the most trusted profession, are often expected to know how to assist a mother in meeting her feeding goals. Creation of an evidence-based practice guideline (EBPG) for support of the active duty servicewoman in the military health system was the purpose of this project. The project was conceptualized within …

Faculty As Global Learners: Off-Campus Study At Liberal Arts Colleges, J. Gillespie, Lisa Jasinski, D. Gross

Faculty Authored and Edited Books & CDs

This co-authored collection offers valuable insights about the impact of leading off-campus study on faculty leaders’ teaching, research, service, and overall well-being. Recognizing that faculty leaders are themselves global learners, the book addresses ways that liberal arts colleges can more effectively achieve their strategic goals for students' global learning by intentionally anticipating and supporting the needs of faculty leaders, as they grow and change. Faculty as Global Learners offers key findings and recommendations to stimulate conversations among administrators, faculty, and staff about concrete actions they can explore and steps they can take on their campuses to both support faculty leaders …

The Construction Of The American Catholic Church: Gender, Sexuality, And Patriotism In U.S. Catholic Media, 1917–1970, William Korinko Jan 2020

The Construction Of The American Catholic Church: Gender, Sexuality, And Patriotism In U.S. Catholic Media, 1917–1970, William Korinko

Theses and Dissertations--Gender and Women's Studies

This project explores the complex relationship between religion, culture, and politics in the United States during the twentieth century by examining a largely unexplored pocket of Roman Catholic pamphlet literature, as well as other forms of Catholic media, including newspapers, magazines, radio programs, and television shows. During the twentieth century Catholic media makers spent a considerable amount of energy speaking and writing about issues related to gender and sexuality, and they often did so in racially coded terms. In addition to making prescriptions of what was appropriate and moral sexual and gendered behavior, these media makers repeatedly made the case …

Mapping The Tutoring Referral Network: Exploring The Student-To-Tutoring Connection, G. Mason Tudor Jan 2020

Mapping The Tutoring Referral Network: Exploring The Student-To-Tutoring Connection, G. Mason Tudor

Theses and Dissertations--Educational Policy Studies and Evaluation

This study explores the institutional network which connected students to a tutoring program at a community college. The study identifies the most likely areas that would refer students to or inform students about the tutoring program. Additionally, the study seeks to understand how different students may have interacted with that network of departments in varied patterns of engagement. While exploring and describing this group of institutional units and their function of connecting students to tutoring, I utilized a multi-phase, mixed methods approach. This methodology began with qualitative information gathering with document analysis, followed by two focus group interviews. I constructed …

Text Mining Methods For Analyzing Online Health Information And Communication, Sifei Han Jan 2020

Text Mining Methods For Analyzing Online Health Information And Communication, Sifei Han

Theses and Dissertations--Computer Science

The Internet provides an alternative way to share health information. Specifically, social network systems such as Twitter, Facebook, Reddit, and disease specific online support forums are increasingly being used to share information on health related topics. This could be in the form of personal health information disclosure to seek suggestions or answering other patients' questions based on their history. This social media uptake gives a new angle to improve the current health communication landscape with consumer generated content from social platforms. With these online modes of communication, health providers can offer more immediate support to the people seeking advice. Non-profit …

Street Musicians, Soundscapes And Hearing The State In Urban Public Spaces Of Istanbul, Lacin Tutalar Jan 2020

Street Musicians, Soundscapes And Hearing The State In Urban Public Spaces Of Istanbul, Lacin Tutalar

Theses and Dissertations--Geography

This study explores street musicians’ routines and associations with public space in Istanbul, Turkey between 2014 and 2016, a period which corresponds to a new, more conservative routine in the aftermath of a time of political contention in 2013. The study overall takes up a rhythmanalytical perspective, following the cultural geography’s interest based on Henri Lefebvre’s use of the term. I contribute to that interest by paying attention to changes in the composition of an urban public in Istanbul through a mix of institutional (e.g. bureaucratic, capitalist and religious) and corporeal (e.g. tourists, musicians, young people, audience, street maintenance, refugees, …

An Intonational Description Of African American Language In Princeville, Nc, Christopher M. Dale Jan 2020

An Intonational Description Of African American Language In Princeville, Nc, Christopher M. Dale

Theses and Dissertations--Linguistics

This thesis uses data from the Princeville, NC section of the Corpus of Regional African American Language (CORAAL) in order to address two topics concerning language: first, what the intonation of the Princeville participants of the CORAAL looks like acoustically; and second, if intonation is the salient feature that categorizes a speaker as Black or non-Black. The acoustic analysis software, Praat (Boersma & Weenink 2019), is used to take average, minimum, and maximum f0 measurements for 16 participants (9 women and 7 men) across three age groups. From these measurements, the rate of change is calculated in Hz/second to determine …

The Mothman And Other Strange Tales: Shaping Queer Appalachia Through Folkloric Discourse In Online Social Media Communities, Brenton Watts Jan 2020

The Mothman And Other Strange Tales: Shaping Queer Appalachia Through Folkloric Discourse In Online Social Media Communities, Brenton Watts

Theses and Dissertations--Linguistics

Little work has been conducted on the intersections of queer and Appalachian identities, in part because these two identities are viewed as incompatible (Mann 2016). This study uses a multimodal critical discourse analytic approach to examine the Instagram posts of the Queer Appalachia Project, which represent a substantial body of discourse created by and for queer Appalachians. Of specific interest to this analysis are those posts which employ folkloric figures, such as West Virginia’s Mothman, to do identity work that is queer, Appalachian, and queer-Appalachian. Often, this act is accomplished through juxtaposition with Appalachian imagery and the reclamation of homophobic …

“Distance Learning” In The Ninth Century?: Micro-Cluster Analysis Of The Epistolary Network Of Alcuin After 796, William James Mattingly Jan 2020

“Distance Learning” In The Ninth Century?: Micro-Cluster Analysis Of The Epistolary Network Of Alcuin After 796, William James Mattingly

Theses and Dissertations--History

Scholars of eighth- and ninth-century education have assumed that intellectuals did not write works of Scriptural interpretation until that intellectual had a firm foundation in the seven liberal arts. This ensured that anyone who embarked on work of Scriptural interpretation would have the required knowledge and methods to read and interpret Scripture correctly. The potential for theological error and the transmission of those errors was too great unless the interpreter had the requisite training. This dissertation employs computistical methods, specifically the techniques of social network mapping and cluster analysis, to study closely the correspondence of Alcuin, a late-eighth- and early-ninth-century scholar …

Breaking Habits: Identity And The Dissolution Of Convents In France, 1789-1808, Corinne Gressang Jan 2020

Breaking Habits: Identity And The Dissolution Of Convents In France, 1789-1808, Corinne Gressang

Theses and Dissertations--History

This dissertation uses the concept of identity to investigate the ways religious women navigated the French Revolution. Even as their religious identities were thrown into question, these women’s religious commitments remained important to them. As the French revolutionaries began to reform aspects of the ancien régime, the Catholic Church came under attack. The fate of priests, monks, and nuns came into question. Traditionally, religious women cared for orphans, the sick, and the poor, educated young girls, housed widows, rehabilitated prostitutes, and provided a respectable alternative community for aristocratic women. Despite every effort by the revolutionaries to dissolve their patterns of …

Envisioning Catholicism: Popular Practice Of A Traditional Faith In The Post-Wwii Us, Christy A. Bohl Jan 2020

Envisioning Catholicism: Popular Practice Of A Traditional Faith In The Post-Wwii Us, Christy A. Bohl

Theses and Dissertations--History

Marian apparitions in the United States have occurred in ever-increasing numbers since World War Two, particularly in the 1980s and 1990s. These apparitions occupy a unique space in religious life, as they provide opportunities for Catholics to practice their faith outside of the Church hierarchy while still maintaining their status as faithful Catholics, often placing women in prominent positions. Although apparitions are an important part of faith for thousands of American Catholics, most Americans and Catholics are unaware of how widespread this movement is. This dissertation takes a comparative approach to examine a selection of apparition events, illuminating the pilgrimage …

An Examination Of Single-Sex Secondary Agricultural Education Classrooms: The Effects Of Teacher Expectancy, Brett Morris Wasden Jan 2020

An Examination Of Single-Sex Secondary Agricultural Education Classrooms: The Effects Of Teacher Expectancy, Brett Morris Wasden

Theses and Dissertations--Community & Leadership Development

The effectiveness of single-sex classrooms in the United States remains unclear. To address this issue, the purpose of this quasi-experiment was to examine single-sex classrooms in secondary agricultural education classrooms in Kentucky. Data were collected through quantitative pretests and posttests from student participants (n = 168) and teacher participants (n = 8). The findings indicated that student participants in single-sex classrooms had higher academic performance, better attendance, and an increased gain in interest in the agriculture, food, and natural resources career pathway. Students participants in coeducational classrooms had less discipline referrals. Teacher participants’ expectation were related to student …

Women Returning To Their Families And Communities After Incarceration: Their Needs, Concerns And Challenges, Julius Johnson Jan 2020

Women Returning To Their Families And Communities After Incarceration: Their Needs, Concerns And Challenges, Julius Johnson

Theses and Dissertations--Community & Leadership Development

The voices of women in re-entry from prison have been muted for many decades. Prior research conducted on men and prison re-entry has been used to shape not only prisons but also the reentry process for women. It is because of this oversight that the gender-specific needs of women in the justice system have gone unnoticed. Once released, formerly incarcerated women face the almost impossible task of finding employment. Many women who find employment have found that their wages do not help them move out of poverty. Trying to find adequate housing becomes an issue not only because of their …

Nonparametric Analysis Of Clustered And Multivariate Data, Yue Cui Jan 2020

Nonparametric Analysis Of Clustered And Multivariate Data, Yue Cui

Theses and Dissertations--Statistics

In this dissertation, we investigate three distinct but interrelated problems for nonparametric analysis of clustered data and multivariate data in pre-post factorial design.

In the first project, we propose a nonparametric approach for one-sample clustered data in pre-post intervention design. In particular, we consider the situation where for some clusters all members are only observed at either pre or post intervention but not both. This type of clustered data is referred to us as partially complete clustered data. Unlike most of its parametric counterparts, we do not assume specific models for data distributions, intra-cluster dependence structure or variability, in effect …

Associations Between Psychosocial Stressors, Genes, And Cardiovascular Disease In At-Risk Adults, Kaitlin Voigts Key Jan 2020

Associations Between Psychosocial Stressors, Genes, And Cardiovascular Disease In At-Risk Adults, Kaitlin Voigts Key

Theses and Dissertations--Nursing

Psychosocial stressors have a significant adverse impact on cardiovascular health. While better medical treatments and increased emphasis on healthy lifestyle have improved cardiovascular health for many in the United States over the past 50 years, there are persistent inequities in cardiovascular disease (CVD) rates, with the highest rates among populations burdened by chronic exposure to psychosocial stressors such as discrimination and anxiety, among others. Genetic factors may interact with these stressors further influencing the rates of CVD in these populations. The purpose of this dissertation is to examine associations among psychosocial stressors and other CVD risk factors, and the influence …

Embodying Inequality: Three Papers On The Role Of Gender And Discrimination In The Lives Of Women, Stefana I. Moldovan Jan 2020

Embodying Inequality: Three Papers On The Role Of Gender And Discrimination In The Lives Of Women, Stefana I. Moldovan

Theses and Dissertations--Social Work

Women experience different forms of discrimination throughout their lives such as unfair treatment in interpersonal interactions in the public spheres and in the private sphere, as prescribed by societal gender roles, women can also experience inequality and discrimination as a disproportionate share of household work and caregiving, limited participation in decision making, unequal access and share of financial resources and leisure, and as well as in cases, of emotional, and physical, or sexual abuse. Limited research explored the potential joint effect of these forms of discrimination. The questions explored in this dissertation were: (1) How does gendered intra-household inequality, experienced …

Economic Contribution Of Forest Sector In Kentucky: Community Dependence And Economic Well-Being, Kamana Poudel Jan 2020

Economic Contribution Of Forest Sector In Kentucky: Community Dependence And Economic Well-Being, Kamana Poudel

Theses and Dissertations--Forestry and Natural Resources

Rural communities depend on the forest sector to fulfill their subsistence needs and maintain economic well-being. The forest sector in Kentucky plays an important role in the state’s rural economic development through provision of market and non-market goods and services along with employment. However, there is lack of understanding of how Kentucky communities’ dependence on forest sector is correlated with the communities’ economic well-being. This research examines the economic contribution of the forest sector and uses common indicators of forest sector dependence and economic well-being to explore the relationship between forest sector dependence and economic well-being at three regional levels …

Race-Related Stress, Resiliency, And Relationship Quality In Black Couples, Melinda Murdock Jan 2020

Race-Related Stress, Resiliency, And Relationship Quality In Black Couples, Melinda Murdock

Theses and Dissertations--Family Sciences

Scholars have historically explained Black marriage patterns of instability and dissolution based on White middle-class models that ignore cultural factors and maintain a narrative of dysfunction. The current study examines resilience in Black couples by exploring mediation effects of attribution and dyadic coping processes on race-related stress and relationship quality. The present study used individual data from 131 middle-income Black couples residing in the South, who self-reported on stress, coping, and relationship quality via online survey. Dyadic Coping was predicted to mediate the relationship between Race-related Stress, Attribution, and Relationship quality. Results indicated that individuals who experienced greater stress from …

The Development Of A Couple Observational Coding System For Computer-Mediated Communication, Martha S. Rackets Jan 2020

The Development Of A Couple Observational Coding System For Computer-Mediated Communication, Martha S. Rackets

Theses and Dissertations--Family Sciences

Many romantic couples integrate text and computer-mediated communication (CMC) into their relationship dynamics, both for general relationship maintenance and for complex dynamics such as problem solving and conflict. Romantic couple dynamics are interactional, dynamic, and sequenced in nature, and a common method for studying interactions of this nature is observational analyses. However, no behavioral or observational coding systems exist that are able to capture text-based transactional couple communication. The main purpose of this dissertation was to develop an observational coding system that can be used to assess sequenced computer- mediated, text-based communication that takes place between romantic partners. This process …

"If You're Ugly, The Blackpill Is Born With You": Sexual Hierarchies, Identity Construction, And Masculinity On An Incel Forum Board, Josh Segalewitz

Joyce Durham Essay Contest in Women's and Gender Studies

The manosphere is one new digital space where antifeminists and men's rights activists interact outside of their traditional social networks. Incels, short for involuntary celibates, exist in this space and have been labeled as extreme misogynists, white supremacists, and domestic terrorists. This project aims to understand discussions happening among incels and situate them within social understandings of masculinity. I downloaded 4,532 threads posted on incels.is and randomly sampled 100 for analysis. Through grounded coding methodology, I identified the importance of making meaning of manhood on this site, particularly with respect to sexuality. Further, I found that incel ideology rests on …

The Gender Citation Gap In Undergraduate Student Research: Evidence From The Political Science Classroom, Li-Yin Liu, Christopher J. Devine, Heidi Gauder Jan 2020

The Gender Citation Gap In Undergraduate Student Research: Evidence From The Political Science Classroom, Li-Yin Liu, Christopher J. Devine, Heidi Gauder

Political Science Faculty Publications

Previous studies have documented a “gender citation gap” in political science, whereby women are less likely to be cited in published research and course syllabi, especially by male scholars. However, no previous study has examined citation patterns among students in political science courses to determine if similar patterns are evident in their research. This article analyzes an original database of individual, as well as group, research assignments from an undergraduate research methods course. Our analysis indicates that male students are significantly less likely than female students to cite research published by women – whether as first authors, any of the …
