A Critique Of Karl Marx On Religion: Historical Instances Of The Church And Revolution, Jake Steedman Jan 2020

A Critique Of Karl Marx On Religion: Historical Instances Of The Church And Revolution, Jake Steedman

CGU Theses & Dissertations

Marx was a man deeply entrenched in the concrete realities of human activity. His radical engagement with grassroots political movements distinguishes him from other historically acclaimed philosophers. Both a fastidious student of Hegel and an outspoken, prolific journalist, Marx’s thought was uniquely placed at the center of social movements.1

It is perhaps this unique quality of Marx that has made him a pointedly polarizing figure, both now and during his time in the middle to late 19th century. Having radical ideas was not outside the norm of philosophical discourse. But, Marx’s ideas and professional experiences mobilized and instigated social change …

The Wall We Need: The Necessity For Judicial Hostility Towards Religion And Mistakes Made By The Supreme Court Regarding The Separation Of Church And State, Darin King Jan 2020

The Wall We Need: The Necessity For Judicial Hostility Towards Religion And Mistakes Made By The Supreme Court Regarding The Separation Of Church And State, Darin King

CGU Theses & Dissertations

In 1952, in a case held to permit early release of students from school in order to attend religious study off campus, the Supreme Court of the United States declared that, “[W]e find no Constitutional requirement which makes it necessary for government to be hostile to religion.” This Thesis argues the opposite: that government hostility towards religion is, in fact, necessary, both Constitutionally and for prudence’s sake.

From Early Childhood To Adulthood: Leader Development In Indonesia, Charlina Gozali Jan 2020

From Early Childhood To Adulthood: Leader Development In Indonesia, Charlina Gozali

CGU Theses & Dissertations

Leaders influence their surroundings in many ways. In companies, leaders impact work satisfaction, commitment, and engagement (Kouzes & Posner, 2015). In schools, leaders affect student behavior and learning outcomes (Wallace, 2006). Utilizing the Productive Giftedness Model (Paik, 2013, 2015), the present research examines the individual aptitude, instructional, and environmental factors that influence the development of young leaders in Indonesia. Participants in the study were recruited by Indonesia Mengajar , a highly selective intervention program in Indonesia which aims to improve educational conditions around the nation through the mobilization and equipping of local stakeholders. In order to examine leader development from …

Secondary English As A Foreign Language Teachers And Teaching: Cultural Practices, Products, And Perspectives, Tammy Johnson

CGU Theses & Dissertations

Learning English is a global phenomenon, if not a necessity, for economic and political reasons in the world today. However, effective instruction of English as a foreign language (EFL) has differing views on how culture and language should be taught. Developed by the author, the study uses the Cultural Teaching Model, which emphasizes that effective cultural instruction should incorporate practices, products, and perspectives. Based on 35 interviews with secondary English foreign language teachers from 19 different developing countries, the study explored the importance of culture, teachers’ beliefs, and effective instructional practices in teaching English in diverse classrooms. This study’s findings …

Playing With Practice Theory : Preliminary Remarks On The Work Of Performance Ecologies In 21st Century Bangkok, Lowell Skar

Manusya, Journal of Humanities

This article builds a framework for considering the place of contemporary performance groups in 21st century Bangkok. It grounds performance groups in ensembles of performance practices developed by groups as part of their unique performance cultures. The varied ensembles of performance practice of three such groups – the Pichet Klunchun Dance Company, the 8X8 Theatre Group, and the B-Floor Artist Collective – are embodied in these groups’ distinctive interactive performance styles and tied to the different creative spaces where they work. The groups’ artistic practices and their working spaces are produced within larger ecologies of performance spanning the urban landscape …

The Impact Of The Sinsai Roo Jai Ton Project On The Development Of Local Culture And Contemporary Performance In Northeastern Thailand, Pachaya Akkapram

Manusya, Journal of Humanities

This article discusses the diverse impacts of the Sinsai Roo Jai Ton research project based at Khon Kaen University from 2016 to 2019. Designed as a puppet performance by university students working with local artists in northeastern Thailand (Isan), the project inspired many other groups interested in making puppet performances by collaborating with local artists in Isan communities. Beyond collaborative performances, the project developed new interests in students who participated in the project and helped develop new types of teaching and learning, of research, and creating contemporary performances from artistic materials in local Isan communities such as narratives, stories, folk …

Student-Faculty Interactions As Predictors Of Retention And Satisfaction Among Generation Z College Students, Stephani Jarecke Jan 2020

Student-Faculty Interactions As Predictors Of Retention And Satisfaction Among Generation Z College Students, Stephani Jarecke

Electronic Theses and Dissertations

Student retention has historically been an important discussion in higher education. While the importance of student retention remains, a new generation of students have filled colleges and universities. This study examines how interactions with faculty influence Generation Z college students’ overall satisfaction and student retention. The quantitative study used the NSSE survey instrument at a public land-grant institution in the Midwest. The results of a Mann-Whitney U analysis indicated a significant difference in student satisfaction reported between students who returned to the same institution the following year and students who did not return. A multiple linear regression analysis indicated that …

A Short History Of Pandemic Coverage On The Internet: Sars, H1n1 And Mers, Will Mari Jan 2020

A Short History Of Pandemic Coverage On The Internet: Sars, H1n1 And Mers, Will Mari

Faculty Publications

This short history of previous online pandemic news coverage (of SARS, H1N1, MERS, c. 2003–2012) draws on Pew Research Center data and then-contemporary primary sources, including meta-journalistic analysis, to explore continuities and divergences to the present and our ongoing coranavirus pandemic. Numerous trends, including a cycle of neglect and panic, emerged on the Internet in the 2000s, and have become exacerbated over time. Other, more positive trends, such as more interactive and helpfully mediated/curated access to health experts, have also emerged. This study provides important context for our current moment.

What's Next? The Intersection Of Politics And Marketing: A Look At Its Impact On Shareholder Wealth, Ashley Morgan Jan 2020

What's Next? The Intersection Of Politics And Marketing: A Look At Its Impact On Shareholder Wealth, Ashley Morgan

Electronic Theses and Dissertations

The first essay attempts to explain the heterogeneity in the stock market’s reaction to a firm’s lobbying for good efforts. It is hypothesized that higher (a) CEO equity-to-pay ratio, (b) marketing influence in the TMT, (c) marketing capabilities, (d) corporate social performance, and (e) institutional ownership, will be associated with less negative abnormal stock returns. Results indicate that firms with a greater amount of marketing influence in the top management team experience greater negative abnormal returns. While firms with a higher CEO equity-to-pay ratio and a greater level of institutional ownership experience less negative abnormal returns. The second essay explores …

Beautiful And Terrible In The Face: Reconfiguring The Southern Beauty Myth Through The Short Fiction And Autobiographical Writings Of Eudora Welty, Katherine Elizabeth Howell Jan 2020

Beautiful And Terrible In The Face: Reconfiguring The Southern Beauty Myth Through The Short Fiction And Autobiographical Writings Of Eudora Welty, Katherine Elizabeth Howell

Electronic Theses and Dissertations

From her personal appearance as the “ugly duckling” of southern literature, to her narrative preoccupations as a writer of grotesques, Eudora Welty has been critically separated from the realm of southern beauty and femininity. Drawing textual evidence from Welty’s strategic invocation of beauty acts and products in her short fiction and autobiographical writings, this thesis insists upon Welty’s lifelong stake in beauty culture, as it is practiced by southern women across the socioeconomic spectrum. Across her body of short fiction—a substantial portion of which was first published in women’s fashion magazines—Welty details the ways in which beauty, as expressed through …

It's A Cis-Gendered Man's World: How Drag Kings Define Good Drag In Their Fight To Be Seen As The Best Performers, Madison Shappley Jan 2020

It's A Cis-Gendered Man's World: How Drag Kings Define Good Drag In Their Fight To Be Seen As The Best Performers, Madison Shappley

Electronic Theses and Dissertations

This research is based on field observations in Ridgeville, a Southern city, at an LGBTQ bar, that I call Rainbow Bar and on in-depth interviews with Rainbow Bar drag performers. Through my study at Rainbow, I set out to answer: 1) What do drag kings consider to be “good drag” for themselves and for other kings?; and 2) Who is considered to have the best drag? And who determines what the best drag is? I found that Ridgeville drag kings felt as though they had to work harder than Ridgeville queens in their drag. To have good drag, Ridgeville kings …

Black Markets And The Exchange Structure, Richard R. W. Brooks Jan 2020

Black Markets And The Exchange Structure, Richard R. W. Brooks

Faculty Articles

Laws do not prevent crime. They create it. Volitional acts causing harm to persons and their interests of course occur with and without law (though presumably more often without) but to see these actions as criminal, to identify them properly as such, is possible only through law. So stated, the point is rather bromidic, and yet it does hint at a more profound question. Why make any conduct criminal? Answers to this question would appear obvious and overdetermined, at least, for some conduct. Victims of assaults, thefts, and other gross invasions of their persons and property needn’t testify as to …

Educating Girls, Educated Women: Dehomogenizing The Impact Of Education In Development, Tricia Beck-Peter, Nikolai G. Wenzel Jan 2020

Educating Girls, Educated Women: Dehomogenizing The Impact Of Education In Development, Tricia Beck-Peter, Nikolai G. Wenzel

College of Business and Economics

After a half-century of failed top-down international aid efforts that ignore basic microeconomics, the New Development Economics (NDE) offers an alternative. First, sound institutions (such as rule of law, property rights, contractual enforcement, etc.); second, respect for basic microeconomic principles (from incentives to knowledge). Within the New Development Economics, development economist William Easterly offers controversial and innovative insights; one of these is the ineffectiveness of education-alone, and without sound institutions-for promoting growth. We argue that Easterly is generally correct, but we improve on Easterly's lessons by dehomogenizing education. Specifically, education for girls has high marginal returns: at the micro level, …

Do You Hear Us? Amplifying Alternative Pathways For High School Pushouts Through Youth Participatory Action Research, Rob A. Duren Jan 2020

Do You Hear Us? Amplifying Alternative Pathways For High School Pushouts Through Youth Participatory Action Research, Rob A. Duren

Educational Leadership and Policy Studies: Doctoral Research Projects

The school-to-prison pipeline (STPP) metaphor encapsulates and describes a set of legislative policies and educational practices that systematically funnel African American, Indigenous, and Latinx students from the classroom into the juvenile and criminal justice system at disparate rates. An emerging solution to address high school pushout and the STPP has been to develop Alternative Education Campuses (AECs). However, there is a current gap in the research that amplifies the counter narratives of students currently enrolled at an AEC, through their own words, using Youth Participatory Action Research (YPAR). Studies conducted with students who have been labeled “high-risk” are especially lacking. …

Young African American Men's Conception Of Fatherhood Among Survivors Of Childhood Abuse, Ohan Patricia Carter Jan 2020

Young African American Men's Conception Of Fatherhood Among Survivors Of Childhood Abuse, Ohan Patricia Carter

Walden Dissertations and Doctoral Studies

Male survivors of abuse who become fathers themselves face challenges different from female survivors, such as conceptualizing their roles as providers and heads of households after the traumatic and often belittling experiences of abuse. However, very few researchers have studied the connection between child abuse and fatherhood, and none specific to young African American fathers. An interpretative phenomenological approach enabled exploration of how African American fathers who were abused as children, conceptualized and perceived their own experiences with fatherhood. The theoretical framework for this study was identity theory, which indicates that how people conceptualize a social role influences their actions …

Administrators' Experiences Implementing Veterans Housing Units In U.S. Correctional Institutions, Lori J. Riedel Jan 2020

Administrators' Experiences Implementing Veterans Housing Units In U.S. Correctional Institutions, Lori J. Riedel

Walden Dissertations and Doctoral Studies

There is a higher rate of recidivism for U.S. veterans compared to the general population of offenders. To address the unique needs of veterans, separate housing units for veterans (VSUs) are now operating within correctional facilities in 29 U.S. states. Despite reports that VSUs are having a positive impact on recidivism, little is known of the experiences of correctional administrators who have implemented a VSU. The purpose of this qualitative phenomenological study was to explore the lived experiences of several individuals who have implemented a VSU in their correctional facility. Guided by the quality implementation framework (QIF), data collected through …

Enhancing The Resilience Of Acute Care Psychiatric Nurses Through A Brief Gratitude Intervention, Patricia D. Sullivan Jan 2020

Enhancing The Resilience Of Acute Care Psychiatric Nurses Through A Brief Gratitude Intervention, Patricia D. Sullivan

Walden Dissertations and Doctoral Studies

Stressors affecting healthcare providers have accelerated in recent years, causing increasing rates of burnout and emotional exhaustion. Evidence suggests that improving general mental well-being of nurses could enhance their resilience and ability to cope in stressful situations. Psychiatric nurses are at risk by caring for involuntary and manipulative patients who can be violent and abusive. The purpose of this project was to improve psychiatric nurses' mental well-being through the implementation of a gratitude practice and examined the effect of this brief gratitude intervention on their mental well-being. Models informing this project were human caring theory, resilience theory, and positive psychology …
