Understanding Continuance Intention Toward Crowdsourcing Games: A Longitudinal Investigation, Xiaohui Wang, Dion Hoe-Lian Goh, Ee-Peng Lim

Research Collection School Of Computing and Information Systems

Given the increasing popularity of gamified crowdsourcing, the study reported here involved examining determinants of users' continuance intention toward crowdsourcing games, both with longitudinal data and reference to a revised unified theory of acceptance and use of technology (UTAUT). At three time points, data were collected from an online survey about playing crowdsourcing games. Time-lagged regression, cross-temporal correlation, and structural equation modeling were performed to examine determinants of the acceptance of crowdsourcing games. Results indicate that the revised UTAUT2 is applicable to explaining the acceptance of crowdsourcing games. Not only did effort expectancy, hedonic motivation, and social influence directly affect …

Prediction Of Nocturia In Live Alone Elderly Using Unobtrusive In-Home Sensors, Barry Nuqoba, Hwee-Pink Tan Dec 2020

Prediction Of Nocturia In Live Alone Elderly Using Unobtrusive In-Home Sensors, Barry Nuqoba, Hwee-Pink Tan

Research Collection School Of Computing and Information Systems

Nocturia, or the need to void (or urinate) one or more times in the middle of night time sleeping, represents a significant economic burden for individuals and healthcare systems. Although it can be diagnosed in the hospital, most people tend to regard nocturia as a usual event, resulting in underreported diagnosis and treatment. Data from self-reporting via a voiding diary may be irregular and subjective especially among the elderly due to memory problems. This study aims to detect the presence of nocturia through passive in-home monitoring to inform intervention (e.g., seeking diagnosis and treatment) to improve the physical and mental …

Business Practice Of Social Media - Platform And Customer Service Adoption, Shujing Sun, Yang Gao, Huaxia Rui Dec 2020

Business Practice Of Social Media - Platform And Customer Service Adoption, Shujing Sun, Yang Gao, Huaxia Rui

Research Collection School Of Computing and Information Systems

This paper examines the key drivers in business adoptions of the platform and customer service within the context of social media. We carry out the empirical analyses using the decision trajectories of the international airline industry on Twitter. We find that a firm's decision-making is subject to both peer influence and consumer pressure. Regarding peer influence, we find that the odds of both adoptions increase when the extent of peers' adoption increases. We also identify the distinctive role of consumers. Specifically, before the platform adoption, firms learn about potential consequences from consumer reactions to peers' adoptions. Upon the platform adoption, …

“White Skin By Color, French Canadian By Métissage: Heredity Knows No Color”, Paula Y. Wilson

Arts & Sciences Graduate Student Theses and Dissertations

Abstract of the Thesis “White Skin by Color, French Canadian by Métissage: Heredity knows no color” Beta thalassemia (β-thalassemia) is one of the hereditary disorders unique to French Canadians (Braekeleer). This thesis argues for any correlations that may exist between the social and identity structures. These social and identity structures correspond with the close relationship between the French Canadians and β-thalassemia. The study reveals the specific cultural and linguistic isolation of these people and the principal cause of the distinguishing traits of this disorder as obscure amongst this ethnic group. French Canadians slowly but surely migrated from the French-speaking Providence …

Hochmair, Bernd Resch, Levente Juhasz, Arthur Lehner, Laxmi Ramasubramanian, Thomas Blaschke Dec 2020

Opportunities And Challenges Of Geospatial Analysis For Promoting Urban Livability In The Era Of Big Data And Machine Learning, Anna Kovacs-Györi, Alina Ristea, Clemens Havas, Michael Mehaffy, Hartwig H. Hochmair, Bernd Resch, Levente Juhasz, Arthur Lehner, Laxmi Ramasubramanian, Thomas Blaschke

Faculty Research, Scholarly, and Creative Activity

Urban systems involve a multitude of closely intertwined components, which are more measurable than before due to new sensors, data collection, and spatio-temporal analysis methods. Turning these data into knowledge to facilitate planning efforts in addressing current challenges of urban complex systems requires advanced interdisciplinary analysis methods, such as urban informatics or urban data science. Yet, by applying a purely data-driven approach, it is too easy to get lost in the ‘forest’ of data, and to miss the ‘trees’ of successful, livable cities that are the ultimate aim of urban planning. This paper assesses how geospatial data, and urban analysis, …

Nelson I La Bombolla Electoral De Nova York, Antoni Pizà

Publications and Research

Resilience Theory And Wicked Problems, Robin Kundis Craig Dec 2020

Resilience Theory And Wicked Problems, Robin Kundis Craig

Vanderbilt Law Review

This Article posits, first, that resilience theory offers important insights into our understanding of wicked problems and, second, that to understand the value of resilience theory to wicked problems, we should start by going back to the context of Rittel’s and Webber’s 1973 delineation of the ten characteristics of a “wicked problem.” Rittel and Webber were in fact among the vanguard of researchers beginning to articulate the realization that social and ecological systems—now social-ecological systems (“SESs”)—do not follow the predictable and mechanistic rules of Newtonian physics. As a result, SESs do not yield, at least not over the long term, …

Exploring The Potential Of Defeasible Argumentation For Quantitative Inferences In Real-World Contexts: An Assessment Of Computational Trust, Lucas Rizzo, Pierpaolo Dondio, Luca Longo Dec 2020

Exploring The Potential Of Defeasible Argumentation For Quantitative Inferences In Real-World Contexts: An Assessment Of Computational Trust, Lucas Rizzo, Pierpaolo Dondio, Luca Longo

Articles

Argumentation has recently shown appealing properties for inference under uncertainty and conflicting knowledge. However, there is a lack of studies focused on the examination of its capacity of exploiting real-world knowledge bases for performing quantitative, case-by-case inferences. This study performs an analysis of the inferential capacity of a set of argument-based models, designed by a human reasoner, for the problem of trust assessment. Precisely, these models are exploited using data from Wikipedia, and are aimed at inferring the trustworthiness of its editors. A comparison against non-deductive approaches revealed that these models were superior according to values inferred to recognised trustworthy …

Course Design And Academic Outcomes In Quantitative Literacy After Eliminating Required Remediation, Jennifer E. Clinkenbeard Nov 2020

Course Design And Academic Outcomes In Quantitative Literacy After Eliminating Required Remediation, Jennifer E. Clinkenbeard

Numeracy

In Fall 2018, remedial mathematics courses were eliminated from the 23-campus California State University system under Executive Order 1110. Incoming first-year students were placed into college credit-bearing mathematics courses with options for corequisite support. This study examines the academic outcomes for students at California State University Monterey Bay in a college credit level quantitative literacy (QL) mathematics course with optional corequisite support during the 2018-2019 academic year. Taken together, the results of this study suggest that required remediation is not necessary for success in college-level QL. The corequisite support model also has potential to support more equitable outcomes for all …

Ignatian Leadership And The Contemporary Leadership Landscape An Exercise In Counter-Cultural Engagement, Thomas M. Kelly, Jennifer Moss Breen

Jesuit Higher Education: A Journal

This paper is written as a dialogue between two faculty members and scholars working within a Jesuit institution. Through their shared interest in leadership, especially an interest in Ignatian Leadership, the following dialogue has emerged. Kelly works in our institution as a theologian and former director of academic service-learning, and Moss-Breen works in the graduate school directing an interdisciplinary leadership EdD program. Their backgrounds and fields are different, but their interest in the leadership of Ignatius is a common thread between them. Kelly starts the conversation and Moss Breen responds in kind.

Ignatian Leadership And Place-Based Learning, Rebecca Murray Nov 2020

Ignatian Leadership And Place-Based Learning, Rebecca Murray

Jesuit Higher Education: A Journal

In An Ignatian Method of City Dwelling (2011) John M. Staudenmaier, SJ notes that “Ignatius teaches that prayer is geographical at its core.” On his own journey of leadership, Ignatius himself learned much about the lives of others, and of himself, through the particular places he visited (often for much longer than he intended). By focusing on a specific geography, place-based community engagement can foster Ignatian leadership as it encourages faculty, staff and students to journey with a community in their own home. Because this unique way of engaging the community emphasizes depth of engagement over breadth, it is …

Student Experiences Of Socioeconomic School Integration In The Irish Secondary Context, Seán G. Gleasure Nov 2020

Student Experiences Of Socioeconomic School Integration In The Irish Secondary Context, Seán G. Gleasure

i.e.: inquiry in education

This research sought to investigate the experiences of students from low socioeconomic status (SES) backgrounds who chose to attend socioeconomically integrated secondary schools in Ireland. Socioeconomic integration is the practice whereby students from varying socioeconomic backgrounds are integrated into heterogeneous school settings in order to diversify their socioeconomic composition. While the literature indicates consistent academic benefits of the practice for low-SES students, uncertainties remain surrounding their psychosocial experience. To better understand such uncertainties, this research embodied a case study approach, investigating the socioeconomic integration experiences of two low-SES families (n = 4) through online surveys and semi-structured interviews. The responses …

Co-Constructing A Learner-Centered, Democratic Syllabus With Teacher Candidates: A Poetic Rendering Of Students’ Meaning Making Experiences., Olga Shugurova

i.e.: inquiry in education

Abstract

In this arts-based research study, the creative concept of a co-constructed, learner-centered, and democratic syllabus (marino, 1997; Matusov & Marjanovic-Shane, 2017; Ricci, 2012; Richmond, 2016; Shor, 1996) is creatively and critically examined through a poetic inquiry that focuses on its pedagogical significance in one of the Canadian teacher education programs. Specifically, the author aims to understand what this pedagogical significance means to her students-teacher candidates. The research question is: What does this syllabus-making experience mean to teacher candidates? The study reveals that the pedagogical significance of co-constructed syllabus is embodied in students’ changing self-perceptions as the active and critical …

The QIC-WD learned many lessons while conducting utilization-focused workforce research across eight diverse public child welfare agencies. In this brief we detail how we are chronicling natural variation (e.g., stay at home orders, hiring freezes, political will, and leadership changes), synthesizing existing data, conducting process evaluation (e.g., identifying implementation drivers), visualizing data to meet diverse stakeholder information needs, and building systems that are both flexible and sustainable.

How Perpetrator Identity (Sometimes) Influences Media Framing Attacks As “Terrorism” Or “Mental Illness”, Allison E. Betus, Erin M. Kearns, Anthony F. Lemieux Nov 2020

How Perpetrator Identity (Sometimes) Influences Media Framing Attacks As “Terrorism” Or “Mental Illness”, Allison E. Betus, Erin M. Kearns, Anthony F. Lemieux

Criminology and Criminal Justice Faculty Publications

Do media frame attacks with Muslim perpetrators as “terrorism” and attacks with White perpetrators as the result of “mental illness”? Despite public speculation and limited academic work with relatively small subsets of cases, there have been no systematic analyses of potential biases in how media frame terrorism. We addressed this gap by examining the text of print news coverage of all terrorist attacks in the United States between 2006 and 2015. Controlling for fatalities, affiliation with a group, and existing mental illness, the odds that an article references terrorism are approximately five times greater for a Muslim versus a non-Muslim …
