Ukhti Vs Ughtea: Arabic Kinship Address Term As Slang And Identity In Indonesian Twitter, Salma Qonitah, Wiwin Triwinarti
International Review of Humanities Studies
Microblogging has taken a quotidian position in the scope of internet usage. This research explores the pragmatic of ughtea, a slang form of ukhti, as a term of address slang and identity in Twitter’s prominent behaviour on virtual sphere: tweeting. Semantically, ukhti refers to “sister” of a possessive pronoun of the first person i.e. the speaker, both in biological and ideological contexts. For the last two years (2018—2019), the usage of the term ukhti has undergone the extension of its meaning through its use among Indonesian Twitter users by changing its form into ughtea as a slang with degenerative meaning, …

The Exclusiveness Of Political Parties And Growing Corruption In Indonesia’S Democracy, Muhammad Aqil Irham
Masyarakat: Jurnal Sosiologi
"The most common definition of corruption is the abuse of public office for private gains. This definition is well formulated by Klitgaard in his elegant equation: Corruption=Monopoly+Discretion– Accountability. In order to improve this formula and make it fit with Indonesian context, Sujatmiko modified it to: Corruption=Monopoly+Discretion– Accountability–Social Control. The addition of ‘Social Control’ to this formula provides a sociological ground into the theoretical approach to corruption. However, the resulted formula still relies on ‘office-based definition of corruption’—a definition that, according to Warren, fits well in the context of administration and bureaucracy, but inadequate to properly understand corruption in a political …

The Reconstruction Of Ethnodevelopment In Indonesia: A New Paradigm Of Village Development In The Ammatoa Kajang Indigeneous Community, Bulukumba Regency, South Sulawesi, Sampean S., Sofyan Sjaf
Masyarakat: Jurnal Sosiologi
The implementation of Law Number 6 of 2014 concerning Villages (Village Law) creates a paradox of recognition, especially for indigenous communities which was caused by the contradiction between the value pasang and development practices. The results of previous research have focused more on the use of the Village Fund, the formation of customary villages, and the management and use of customary forests. These findings were used to reconstruct ethnodevelopment in the implementation of the principle of recognition of the Village Law in the Ammatoa Kajang indigenous community. Qualitative data were collected through in-depth interviews and focus group discussions with members …

Religious intolerance is worsening in various countries, including in Indonesia, a country with the largest Muslim population in the world. In Indonesia, one of the actors of this phenomenon is teachers. According to several studies, it was caused by state policies, religious education, learning strategy and teacher’s capacity. Based on the cases in two high schools in Pisang Batu1City in Indonesia, this study discovered similar findings. However, it was caused not only by the factors explained in the studies mentioned, but also by homophily in social networks. The community in which the teachers were raised, their school background, friendships in …

The Power Of Exclusion In Agrarian Conflict Of Bangko-Bangko National Natural Park, West Lombok, Galang Anugrah
Masyarakat: Jurnal Sosiologi
Land exclusion (prevention and restriction of access) plays an important role in triggering agrarian conflicts in Indonesia. Previous studies tended to see the state and private companies as the main actors driving the exclusion process, while the reasons behind it were merely caused by the capital. However, the process of exclusion is also led by forestry and nature conservation. This paper aims to explore the case of agrarian conflicts that occur in the Bangko-Bangko National Natural Park, by examining the power of exclusion as a conceptual framework (Hall et al. 2011). By using qualitative research methods, the data were collected …

Going by the proposition of the Uses and Gratifications Theory (UGT), people are motivated to use media by various psychological factors and for obtaining different forms of gratifications. However, as social media continue to play an essential role in shaping the sociability and bridging social connectivity and interactions among its users, therefore, this study seeks to incorporate social influence and social interactions as the social gratification sought in social media utilization, as well as both bonding and bridging social capital as social gratification obtained from social media utilization. An online survey was conducted among 400 users of Instagram in Nigeria. …

Birth Control Behind Bars: An Anthropological Perspective On The Care Of Captive Bonobos, Tylyn A. Recore-Dagsaan
PANDION: The Osprey Journal of Research and Ideas
Bonobos are one of our closest living primate relatives. They are primarily known for their unique social structure and sexual behavior. In their native setting, the Democratic Republic of the Congo, bonobos are often seen engaging in sexual behaviors not only for reproduction, but for social reasons too. Unfortunately, research in the wild is difficult because of political unrest and rapidly declining population numbers. Since bonobos are endangered, it is crucial that we maintain and properly care for a captive population to ensure the survival of the species. A captive setting provides a safe, controlled environment for researchers to observe …

Punk Legends: Cultural Representation And Ostension, Jeffrey S. Debies-Carl
Sociology Faculty Publications
This chapter analyzes two legendary images of punk that circulate prominently in popular media. Although the two images are mutually exclusive and only describe partial aspects of punk as a whole, their broad circulation and investment of audiences in either story have real-life consequences. The chapter therefore holds that researching the images of subcultures should be a central concern for subculture studies.

Winks, Whispers, And Prosecutorial Discretion In Rural Iowa, 1925-1928, Emily Prifogle
Articles
Through the eyes of Charles Pendleton’s memoirs, this article walks through a rural community with a county attorney to consider how race, religion, gender, and sexuality influenced rural prosecutorial discretion in the early twentieth century. Rural communities like those in Buena Vista County, Iowa, where the article is centered, experienced “the law” through distinctly isolated geographies and social networks that lacked anonymity and thus shaped available methods of conflict resolution. But anonymity did not mean homogeneity. Ethnic, racial, and religious diversity created divisions within a community where social distance between individuals was small. Both onymity and diversity shaped who should …

An Exploration Of Mental Contrasting And Social Networks Of English Language Learners, Adam T. Pinkston
Theses and Dissertations
This study focuses on how applying MCII, a wish-fulfillment and goal-setting method researched by Gabriele Oettingen, benefits the quantity and quality of English language learners' (ELLs) social networks while participating in a study abroad program in the United States. This is done by instructing participants in the use of MCII, giving them weekly reminders on that instruction and the goals they set, and by measuring change from beginning to end. Analyzing the social networks of 36 English language learners at an intensive English program (IEP) after 14 weeks of instruction shows that the ELLs displayed growth in the number of …

Representation Of U.S. Minority Groups In The Marriage And Family Therapy Literature Over An 18-Year Period: A Content Analysis, Kensington Osmond
Theses and Dissertations
Research relevant to the unique needs and experiences of racial/ethnic/cultural (REC) minority groups in social science literature is essential to the work of policymakers and clinical practitioners. However, the social sciences have traditionally failed to publish a sufficient number of articles that address these needs and experiences or even adequately report the racial and ethnic makeup of their samples. The purpose of this study is to provide an updated look at Marriage and Family Therapy (MFT) literature and how often sample participants’ ethnicity is reported, how frequently studies focus on ethnic issues or specific REC minority groups, which REC minority …

The Alien World Of Reflective Practice: A Non-Fictional ‘Tale’ Of Academics’ Experiences Of Applying For Senior Fellowship, Lucy Spowart, Rebecca Turner
Professional Services
Since the release of the revised version of the UK Professional Standards Framework in 2011, researchers have examined the benefits and challenges of gaining teaching accreditation in the higher education (HE) sector. Here we employ creative non-fiction techniques to stimulate further discussion around the development opportunities associated with gaining Senior Fellowship. This lens permits greater freedom from political agendas that might otherwise remain hidden in our analysis, and therefore offers greater protection to the research participants. The ‘tale’ is constructed from data produced by qualitative interviews with 30 university staff members to illustrate the competing discourses of HE teaching accreditation …
An Apology For The Villain-Hero : A Study Of Christopher Marlowe’S Tragic Works, Yue Zhu
An Apology For The Villain-Hero : A Study Of Christopher Marlowe’S Tragic Works, Yue Zhu
Lingnan Theses (MPhil & PhD)
Suffering and death are the basic human conditions, hence the importance of the cognitive function and value of tragic art that re-presents suffering and death on stage. Aristotle’s Poetics is the first theoretical work in the history of Western aesthetics to comprehensively discuss the topic of tragedy. In answer to Plato’s criticism of dramatic art, Aristotle argues that tragedy “effects through pity and fear the catharsis of such emotions”, which are best aroused by the spectacle of a moderately good man who falls into misery not through vice but through some hamartia. By evocation of such passions, our emotions are …

Heterogenity In Brain Injury: An Investigation Of The Efficacy Of Qualitative Comparative Analysis In Diffusion Tensor Imaging, Cooper Benton Hodges
Theses and Dissertations
Traumatic brain injury (TBI) and its associated neural and cognitive sequelae are of increasing interest in military populations. Blast-related TBI is becoming more commonplace in military Service Members and Veterans since Operation Iraqi Freedom/Operation Enduring Freedom/Operation New Dawn and their following conflicts. It is currently unclear whether blast-related injuries cause unique neural and cognitive deficits. The present investigation, in Study 1, aims to investigate the differences in blast-related and non-blast related TBI using traditional statistical techniques. In Study 2, this study will demonstrate the use of Qualitative Comparative Analysis (QCA) in diffusion tensor imaging data. QCA is a relatively new …

The Role Of Cultural Orientation In Adolescent Identity Formation: Self-Construal As A Mediator., Darmawan Muttaqin
Makara Human Behavior Studies in Asia
Cultural context has become one of the key factors in identity formation. Differences in cultural orientation cause differences in self-construal which influence identity formation. This research examined the role of self-construal as a mediator of the role cultural orientation in identity formation. This study recruited 569 participants aged 18-21 years old. The Utrecht-Management of Identity Commitments Scale, Culture Orientation Scale, and Self-Construal Scale were used to measure identity formation, cultural orientation, and self-construal. The results indicated that interdependent self-construal could mediate the role cultural orientation in identity formation and that significant others are important in identity formation.
The Role Of Personality And Self-Motivation In Political (Dis)Engagement, Daryl Loh Wei Meng, Eliza Berezina
The Role Of Personality And Self-Motivation In Political (Dis)Engagement, Daryl Loh Wei Meng, Eliza Berezina
Makara Human Behavior Studies in Asia
Perceived loss of control of ones’ political environment breeds cynicism and lowered self-motivation for future political action, all of which are marked indicators of learned helplessness. This leads to disengagement of a country’s people in political activity, thus leaving the government unaccountable and unregulated, while allowing corruption and selfserving policies to plague the nation’s well-being. Therefore, this study aimed to better understand the associations among political apathy, learned helplessness, age, and personality traits. It was hypothesized that learned helplessness, age, and personality traits would be significant predictors of political apathy. Participants were 200 Malaysian individuals (91 males, 109 females, M …

Too Much ‘Stuff’ And The Wrong Space: A Conceptual Framework Of Material Possessions, Elena Marco, Katie Williams, Sonya Oliveira
Interiority
Space for living in new build houses in the UK is at premium and households have more stuff than ever before. The way this stuff is accommodated in dwellings can significantly affect residents’ quality of life and well-being. This paper presents a new conceptualisation of material possessions that could be of use to those involved in housing design. Three universal characteristics of material possessions; value, temporality and visibility are used to identify the space in the home that possessions might require. A conceptual framework that integrates these characteristics with spatial information about the interior of the home is developed. The …

Impact Of Founder On The Ipo Flipping Activity During Pre And Post-Global Financial Crisis, Hon-Wei Leow, Wee-Yeap Lau
The Indonesian Capital Market Review
This study examines the impact of the founder on the IPO flipping activity in the Malaysian stockmarket, especially the Main and ACE Market, across the Global Financial Crisis (GFC) periodfrom January 2006 to December 2016. Multiple regression models have been used to evaluate the interaction of the founder and other independent variables. Using three sub-periods, namely pre- GFC, GFC, and Post-GFC, our results show: Firstly, the founder by itself does not have any impact on flipping activity. However, the interaction of founder and oversubscription ratio reduces flipping activity in the pre-crisis period. Secondly, the interaction of founder and firm age …

Our study aims to examine the relation of stock return, foreign equity inflow, and investor sentiment in Indonesian Islamic stocks. We use monthly data from 2012 to 2018 and 109 firms with 9,156 total observations. Considering heterogeneity and endogeneity assumption, our models are estimated by the system generalized method of moment. Our research found a positive bi-directional effect between stock return and investor sentiment on the contemporaneous period and the uni-directional effect in which investor sentiment negatively impacts stock return. Our research also found a between stock return and foreign investor inflow. Last but not least, those imply to asset …
Campus Apartment Architecture Style And Likelihood To Graduate, Newman Chun Wai Wong, Michael T. Mills, Isabel Araiza
Campus Apartment Architecture Style And Likelihood To Graduate, Newman Chun Wai Wong, Michael T. Mills, Isabel Araiza
New York Journal of Student Affairs
Because of increased opportunities for social interaction, undergraduate students living on campus are more likely to persist and graduate than their counterparts. Residence hall design also contributes to student interaction. This study explores the relationship between campus apartment design and graduation rates of a sophomore cohort attending a southern public liberal arts university. Initial findings indicate students living in a communal apartment complex were more likely to graduate than those living in traditional complexes; a multivariate logistic regression finds the strongest predictors of graduation are race/ethnicity and semester credit hours earned. Implications and suggestions for future research are discussed.

Using Think-Alouds To Uncover Expert-Novice Gaps In Aac Intervention Planning Skills, Allison M. Sauerwein, Jane R. Wegner
Teaching and Learning in Communication Sciences & Disorders
Because few studies have explored preservice speech-language pathologists’ (SLP’s) learning outcomes in augmentative and alternative communication (AAC) coursework and clinical practica, there is a need to investigate student learning in this area. This article represents a portion of a larger study that explored the expert-novice gap in planning for intervention with children who use AAC. The companion article reports clinical reasoning skills, whereas the present study revealed intervention planning skills. The methods are the consistent with those reported in the companion article. In summary, eight novice (i.e. preservice) SLPs and eight expert SLPs completed think-aloud tasks while they developed intervention …
