Teaching Design Strategy For Social Impact: A Synergistic Pedagogical Framework, Brooke Brandewie, Neha Mann, Claudia Rebola

DRS Biennial Conference Series

Design and strategy are inherently oriented toward change and innovation. Innovation is about invention and implementation, but dependent on design, strategic design requires management. This paper describes an approach to design strategy as innovation for social impact. A pedagogical approach/curriculum for teaching design strategy is discussed as a core design research activity. Future-focused yet human-centered methods are emphasized as the framework for structuring the projects to yield outcomes towards some of the most pressing global issues we face today.

Multispecies Cohabitation And Future Design, Stanislav Roudavski Aug 2020

Multispecies Cohabitation And Future Design, Stanislav Roudavski

DRS Biennial Conference Series

How should humans live with animals and other forms of life? Could responses to this question improve the health and wellbeing of the biosphere? This paper argues that design researchers ought to engage nonhuman lifeforms as collaborators: informants and co-designers, or clients and users. Inspired by recent design challenges involving birds, bats and trees, this paper positions emancipatory multispecies cohabitation as a goal that can alleviate ongoing biodiversity losses and human-wildlife conflicts, in cities and beyond. It opens an interdisciplinary conversation by translating emerging scholarship in ethics, politics, and aesthetics to a narrative about desirable more-than-human cultures. This discussion has …

The Inequities Of Job Loss And Recovery Amid The Covid-19 Pandemic, Rogelio Saenz, Corey Sparks Aug 2020

The Inequities Of Job Loss And Recovery Amid The Covid-19 Pandemic, Rogelio Saenz, Corey Sparks

Carsey Publications

In this policy brief, authors Rogelio Sáenz and Corey Sparks discuss the wide variations in unemployment and the level of job loss during the COVID-19 pandemic across the nation’s demographic groups that have historically suffered disparities in the workforce, including persons of color, women, and immigrants. It is particularly unfortunate that the calamity of the pandemic comes on the heels of major improvements in job prospects that these groups made over the last decade, as the workforce emerged from the Great Recession.

The benefits associated with the CARES Act of March 2020 expired in July, leaving tens of millions of …

Designing Six Dimensions Of Intercultural Teamwork: A Next-Gen Challenge In Co-Creation Processes, Kelly Murdoch-Kitt, Denielle J. Emans, Bruna Oewel Aug 2020

Designing Six Dimensions Of Intercultural Teamwork: A Next-Gen Challenge In Co-Creation Processes, Kelly Murdoch-Kitt, Denielle J. Emans, Bruna Oewel

DRS Biennial Conference Series

By examining remote collaboration as a design problem, this paper provides a rationale for the Six Dimensions of Intercultural Teamwork, a new framework to help teammates understand various differences such as how they build trust, exchange information, and cope with creative abrasion. Collaborative work intensifies when teammates are diverse in mindsets, cultural backgrounds, disciplines, and approaches to problems and projects. Stumbling blocks can also grow when teammates work remotely or are working with each other for the first time. Design processes can help remote teams improve the way they work together by introducing systemic thinking, promoting physical and iterative processes, …

Educating For Design Character In Higher Education: Challenges In Studio Pedagogy, Elizabeth Boling, Colin M. Gray, Kennon M. Smith Aug 2020

Educating For Design Character In Higher Education: Challenges In Studio Pedagogy, Elizabeth Boling, Colin M. Gray, Kennon M. Smith

DRS Biennial Conference Series

Some particular challenges in studio pedagogy arise from teaching for design character versus focusing solely on skills, knowledge or the cognitive processes of our students. In this paper, three authors with extensive combined experience in studio learning, teaching, and scholarship address these challenges via reflection on our own experiences of research and teaching and in-depth discussion with each other. We adopt a co/autoethnographic approach (Coia & Taylor, 2009), identifying a range of challenges we have faced ourselves across three established and emergent design disciplines. These challenges are grouped in relationship to students, to curriculum, to our colleagues, and to ourselves. …

Exploring Transdisciplinary Learning And Lifelong Training In Visual Communication Design Education, Jesvin Puay-Hwa Yeo, Chua-Tee Teo Aug 2020

Exploring Transdisciplinary Learning And Lifelong Training In Visual Communication Design Education, Jesvin Puay-Hwa Yeo, Chua-Tee Teo

DRS Biennial Conference Series

The paper seeks to discuss how visual communication design education could be improved by incorporating transdisciplinary learning within design curriculum and providing lifelong training to professional designers and design educators. A review of literature indicates that design education needs to be adapted to allow future designers to solve the gradually complex design problems and work in non-design industries. In fact, design education needs to extend design knowledge to non-design disciplines to enable more people to generate innovation to work-related problems. On this basis, it is recommended that design education should offer graphic designers the opportunity to master skills and knowledge …

With an increase in international projects, comes increased opportunities for design researchers to contribute to research that tackles Sustainable Development Goals in the Global South. Nevertheless, the role of design within this context is disparate and detached, with very limited design literature on the subject. As such, this paper has identified the key challenges and barriers that design researchers face in conducting and applying design research in a Global South Context. Based on a workshop with design research experts doing research in Global South, the literature and lessons learnt from running a design-led project in Ghana, we are presenting and …

Design Languages In The Design Space: Silicon Valley, Tarja Pääkkönen, Melanie Sarantou, Satu Miettinen Aug 2020

Design Languages In The Design Space: Silicon Valley, Tarja Pääkkönen, Melanie Sarantou, Satu Miettinen

DRS Biennial Conference Series

This interdisciplinary article explores the nature of language in design managers´ strategic contexts. Taken-for-granted assumptions behind language influence the way cues are selected and elaborated on through actors´ frames to ultimately become meanings. Language suggests and passes on cues and frames through which strategizing evolves. The design space is depicted as an entanglement of in-betweens where actors are immersed in language and materiality in their ongoing sensemaking. The hermeneutic analysis revealed that design languages partly extend managerial concepts, thus broadening horizons. Designers´ sensemaking in this longitudinal research showed traits of normalising and denormalising language use balancing between frame adoption and …

The Context And Experience Of Mobility Among Urban Marginalized Women In New Delhi, India, Krity Gera, Peter Hasdell

DRS Biennial Conference Series

Gender and mobility are two different yet complex themes that intersect to reveal the impact of the latter on practices related to gender. Indian women experience restriction on their movement because of social, cultural and economic issues. In such contexts, the informal modes of transport emerge as bottom-up solutions to fill in the voids left by public transportation system. Transportation is not just a means for geographical mobility but impacts social mobility of women resulting in enhancement of their overall quality of life. This research takes a descriptive approach to reveal the experience of mobility among urban marginalized women residing …

Designing By Frontline Tobacco-Prevention Practitioners: How Can Design Thinking Workshop Affect The Development Of Public Health Strategies?, Eric Chen-F Hsieh, Min-Yuan Ma, Fu-Yu Lin Aug 2020

Designing By Frontline Tobacco-Prevention Practitioners: How Can Design Thinking Workshop Affect The Development Of Public Health Strategies?, Eric Chen-F Hsieh, Min-Yuan Ma, Fu-Yu Lin

DRS Biennial Conference Series

Design thinking features a distinct process for probing deep problems and ensuring that the right questions are being addressed and feasible solutions proposed. Recently, Taiwan’s Health Promotion Administration took on design thinking as a method for redesigning several health-related public strategies. Although design thinking has been widely applied in several realms, more studies need to be conducted to ascertain its full effect. Therefore, this study attempts to understand how a Design Thinking Workshop could affect the development of public health strategies by using adolescent tobacco prevention as a case for research. The two-phase study included data collection and analysis for …

Open-Source Philosophy In Fashion Design: Contesting Authorship Conventions And Professionalism, Natalia Särmäkari, Annamari Vänskä Aug 2020

Open-Source Philosophy In Fashion Design: Contesting Authorship Conventions And Professionalism, Natalia Särmäkari, Annamari Vänskä

DRS Biennial Conference Series

This paper investigates open-source fashion approach as a design philosophy and a phenomenon that demonstrates an alternative to the concept of authorship of fashion designers. We argue that the concept contests traditional professionalism in fashion design in today’s digitalized, data-driven culture. Investigating open-source philosophy in fashion design as a dimension of professional fashion designers’ authorship, the paper presents three case studies with different ways of applying open-source principles to existing fashion design practices. The article builds on multiple-case-study research conducted during 2018–2019. The case studies were analyzed from the perspective of authorship and professionalism. We ask whether, how, why and …

Monsters In The Borderlands: Designer-Academics In Action, Philip Ely, Qassim Saad, Dianne Smith Aug 2020

Monsters In The Borderlands: Designer-Academics In Action, Philip Ely, Qassim Saad, Dianne Smith

DRS Biennial Conference Series

Much attention has been paid to how design – as an activity and a discipline – takes shape, with a focus on the professional designer. This paper explores a different kind of design practitioner - the ‘designer-academic’ - who holds a unique position at the border of pedagogy, practice and research in the creation not only of new ‘things’, but also processes and ways of working. Taking a reflective look at two projects over a emergent over a thirty-six month period we provide a glimpse into the everyday complexities of design research-in-action. We argue that we should look at designer-academics …

Studying Material Interactions To Facilitate A Sense Of Being With The World, Bilge Merve Aktas, Camilla Groth Aug 2020

Studying Material Interactions To Facilitate A Sense Of Being With The World, Bilge Merve Aktas, Camilla Groth

DRS Biennial Conference Series

Material interactions are fundamental to design and craft education; however, they might also provide opportunities to reflect on sustainable behaviour in general. In this paper, we present an interdisciplinary undergraduate course in which students interacted with clay and wool. By engaging novices in material-based craft processes, we examined renewed ways of experiencing the materials to reconsider our everyday material interactions and our dependency and responsibilities in regard to materials in general. Through this example, we discuss the potential of craft practice as an educational platform to discuss materiality and to facilitate a deeper and more holistic understanding of the consequences …

Strange Bedfellows: Design Research And Behavioral Design, Ruth Schmidt Aug 2020

Strange Bedfellows: Design Research And Behavioral Design, Ruth Schmidt

DRS Biennial Conference Series

Behavioral design—the application of behavioral economics principles to real-world challenges—has achieved success across a variety of domains, yet its scale and effectiveness has been limited by its narrow focus on behavioral change to frame problems. While some have suggested that joining forces with the social sciences and other analytical problem-solving methodologies might help overcome its perceived deficits, the more generative and synthetic discipline of design research is particularly well positioned to be a complementary partner due to design’s systems orientation and humanity-centered perspective to issues of context, evidence, and problem framing. This disciplinary integration has the potential to be particularly …

Meeting Afoot – A Step Towards Transforming Work Practice By Design Of Technical Support, Helena Tobiasson, Fredrik Nilbrink, Jan Gulliksen, Pernilla Eriksson

DRS Biennial Conference Series

Over the recent decades, a gradual shift towards less physically active and more sedentary work tasks and environments has taken place in many professions. Low levels of physical activity are now one of the major societal challenges due to its negative impact on health. We report a case study generating knowledge on how to support a change of work practise from low levels of physical activity to an increased level by combining and integrating and not separating work tasks from physical activity. This approach resulted in Meeting afoot – a system supporting walk meetings developed in close collaboration with participants …

Anti-Oppression Mindsets For Collaborative Design, Hillary Carey Aug 2020

Anti-Oppression Mindsets For Collaborative Design, Hillary Carey

DRS Biennial Conference Series

There is a growing synergy between design research and social justice. As design moves from commercial contexts into the community, we become advocates for creating more inclusive and equitable systems. But the traditionally nonpolitical posture of design practice leaves us ill-equipped for approaching complex challenges. Learning new approaches to be open to other perspectives improves our insights and fosters deeper collaboration. Without an awareness of historical privilege and oppression, we can unintentionally harm the people with whom we collaborate. Design Research practices are not yet considerate of people at the margins– people we may be working side by side with …

Human-Centered Ai: The Role Of Human-Centered Design Research In The Development Of Ai, Jan Auernhammer Aug 2020

Human-Centered Ai: The Role Of Human-Centered Design Research In The Development Of Ai, Jan Auernhammer

DRS Biennial Conference Series

Artificial Intelligence has the tremendous potential to produce progress and innovation in society. Designing AI for people has been expressed as essential for societal well-being and the common good. However, human-centered is often used generically without any commitment to a philosophy or overarching approach. This paper outlines different philosophical perspectives and several Human-centered Design approaches and discusses their contribution to the development of Artificial Intelligence. The paper argues that humanistic design research should play a vital role in the pan-disciplinary collaboration with technologists and policymakers to mitigate the impact of AI. Ultimately, Human-centered Artificial Intelligence incorporates involving people and designing …

Over The Rainbow: Sharing A Cross-Disciplinary Philosophy Of Waste Through Spectrum Visualisation, Manuela Taboada, Alice Payne Aug 2020

Over The Rainbow: Sharing A Cross-Disciplinary Philosophy Of Waste Through Spectrum Visualisation, Manuela Taboada, Alice Payne

DRS Biennial Conference Series

Waste is a material problem and a cultural condition. Many philosophies and visualisation resources exist for addressing waste such as waste hierarchies and circular economy diagrams. These diagrams, however, are not always enough to represent the intrinsic complexities related to waste systems or the interactions that exist between current and potential interventions. In this paper we contribute an original framework for understanding waste and propose a visualisation of waste as a spectrum of possibilities rather than as a series of discrete, disconnected interventions. The Waste Rainbow invites users to “plot” interventions and to think about these interventions and their relationships …

Invisible Impact: Revaluing Data In Design Research, Leigh-Anne Hepburn Aug 2020

Invisible Impact: Revaluing Data In Design Research, Leigh-Anne Hepburn

DRS Biennial Conference Series

Design research as a way of understanding and responding to the world around us has grown significantly over the last decade, particularly in the domain of health. Design can offer a deep interrogation of the complexity experienced by stakeholders in a given health context, engaging in an empathic and creative way to capture lived experience as data that can inform, influence and engender meaningful change. Ordinarily, this data is valued in its contribution towards the intended study aims and is traditionally realised in project reports, academic publications, and lay-person summaries. However, this paper argues that value should be reconsidered to …

Unfolding Passion: Autoethnography On The Emergence And Impact Of Teacher’S Passion In The Design Studio, Miikka J. Lehtonen, Gionata Gatto Aug 2020

Unfolding Passion: Autoethnography On The Emergence And Impact Of Teacher’S Passion In The Design Studio, Miikka J. Lehtonen, Gionata Gatto

DRS Biennial Conference Series

While literature on (design) education understands passion as positively impacting learning experiences, our point of departure in this paper is to ask whether too much passion can be detrimental in the design studio. Using our autoethnographic accounts as design educators in a university recently established in the Middle Eastern and North African (MENA) region, we make visible broader social structures that granulate our analytical understanding of passion in the design studio. More specifically, our experiences highlight the temporality and contextuality of passion, and drawing on sociological studies on emotion work, we refer to the actions that individuals take to manage …

Grappling With Diversity In Research Through Design, Boudewijn Boon, Ehsan Baha, Abhigyan Singh, Frithjof E. Wegener, Marco C. Rozendaal, Pieter Jan Stappers

DRS Biennial Conference Series

Since its introduction, Research through Design (RtD) has taken on a wide variety of forms. Currently, there is a lack of clarity about what connects and separates different RtD approaches. Several attempts have been made to clarify these matters, often in the form of a top-down categorization. Here we start on a different path, one that is open for different points of view and grounded in the ongoing concerns and needs of RtD practitioners. Over a two-month period, we engaged a local research community in weekly discussions about RtD in their work. Thoughts and questions were posted on a dedicated …

A Framework For Designing For Divergent Values, Marina Bos-De Vos Aug 2020

A Framework For Designing For Divergent Values, Marina Bos-De Vos

DRS Biennial Conference Series

Designers increasingly collaborate with other actors to deliver designs that address diverse stakeholder needs. Such multidisciplinary design processes revolve around integrating various, often divergent values, including the ideals that collaborating actors have, and the different kinds of worth that they attempt to realize. As values are multidimensional and continuously in flux, the process of designing for divergent values requires conscious action. Existing theories of values and methods for integrating diverse, possibly competing values are still scattered across disciplines, leaving designers with little overview and handles for what they have to deal with. Synthesizing insights from workshops with architects and literature …

Examining The Influence Of Cosmetics On Jury Decisions., Carlota Batres, Richard Russell Aug 2020

Examining The Influence Of Cosmetics On Jury Decisions., Carlota Batres, Richard Russell

Psychology Faculty Publications

Many studies have examined how defendant characteristics influence jury decisions, but none have investigated the effect of cosmetics. We therefore examined how cosmetics influence jury decisions for young and middle-aged female defendants. In Study 1, participants were more likely to assign guilty verdicts to middle-aged defendants than young defendants and when presented with cosmetics, male participants gave young defendants longer sentences and middle-aged defendants shorter sentences. In Study 2, however, we did not replicate the age or the cosmetics effects on jury sentences, suggesting that comparisons between defendants may have influenced jury decisions in Study 1. Further work is thus …
