Bridging Boundaries: Sophonisba Preston Breckinridge And The International Child Welfare Movement, 1910-1948, Anya Jabour

History Faculty Publications

As a social worker and social reformer in Chicago, a policy consultant for the U.S. Children’s Bureau, and an active participant in both European and Latin American reform movements, Sophonisba Preston Breckinridge (1866-1948) was an integral part of the child welfare movement at the local, national, and international levels throughout the first half of the twentieth century. Summing up Breckinridge’s four decades of child welfare advocacy, Children’s Bureau Chief Katharine Lenroot declared, “The children of the world are richer because she lived and cared.”[i] Indeed, Sophonisba Preston Breckinridge and the international child welfare movement advanced child welfare, international cooperation, and …

Virality, Algorithms, And Illiberal Attacks On The Press: Legitimation Strategies For A New World, Ronald N. Jacobs Sep 2020

Virality, Algorithms, And Illiberal Attacks On The Press: Legitimation Strategies For A New World, Ronald N. Jacobs

Sociology Faculty Scholarship

Historically, professional journalism has justified its importance through a series of binary oppositions that privileged objectivity over opinion, news over entertainment, impartiality over partisanship, and public interest over profit. Over the last half century these distinctions have become increasingly destabilized, and the press finds itself under attack from a number of different directions. This article examines the social forces that have combined to challenge press authority: (1) the changing ownership structure and revenue model for news organizations, (2) the shifting dynamics of media influence made possible by convergence culture and algorithmic culture, and (3) the attacks on expertise made possible …

J. C. Sharman. Empires Of The Weak: The Real Story Of European Expansion And The Creation Of The New World Order, Niv Horesh

Comparative Civilizations Review

Warfare had undergone many revolutionary changes over the centuries. Hittite chariots, for example, are said to have spread east and south bolstering aristocracies at the dawn of urbanization some three thousand years ago. Then, the quality of swords and armouries infinitely improved, as the infantry steadily took centre stage, and the Iron Age swept across Eurasia and, later on, Africa. The Chinese invented the crossbow as early as the 7th Century BCE, and Hannibal surprised the Romans with elephants few centuries later.

Imagining A Climate Of Equity Through A Critical Theory Of Love: Using Cpar To Identify Guiding Principles That Humanize Library Work, Rachel M. Barnett, Matthew A. Witenstein

Roesch Library Staff Publications

Diversity is a core value of the American Library Association and diversity standards including cultural competencies have been adopted by the Association of College and Research Libraries. Nevertheless, academic libraries still have obstacles to overcome to embody these principles. Minorities continue to be underrepresented in the field and many encounter barriers within library cultures where cultural competency is lacking and micro aggressions are pervasive and invisible to many white colleagues. This study uses critical participatory action research to identify ways a library diversity and inclusion team can support library employees engaging in equity-minded work at a private, predominantly white Catholic …

Cooperation In The International System: An Interdisciplinary Investigation At The Intersection Of International Relations And International Law, Kalyani Unkule

Maurer Theses and Dissertations

A conversation between the disciplines of International Relations and International Law illuminates the nature of interstate cooperation and enhances our understanding of the nature and potential of international law. There are methodological and practical asymmetries between International Relations and International Law which create ideal conditions for interdisciplinary work. Studying international cooperation on protecting cultural heritage enable us to address the above questions and reevaluate and extend underlying theoretical frameworks.

Racism In Singapore, Kayne Augustin, Matthew Davaraj Danapaul, Muhammad Irfan Bin Arshad, Muhammad Fakhrudin, Jun Jie Jeremy Teng Sep 2020

Racism In Singapore, Kayne Augustin, Matthew Davaraj Danapaul, Muhammad Irfan Bin Arshad, Muhammad Fakhrudin, Jun Jie Jeremy Teng

Introduction to Research Methods RSCH 202

Racism is a prevalent issue around the world. In Singapore, concerns of discrimination against minority racial groups, such as Malays and Indians, have been raised with regards to companies’ employing procedures. However, there have been very little studies done on this issue. We have included relevant studies that support and do not support the claim of presence of racism in Singapore. In addition, we intend to replicate a previous study conducted by Marianne Bertrand and Sendhil Mullainathan (2004) in America by sending fabricated resumes to white-collared industries, such as the law, finance, and real estate firms in Singapore. These firms …
