A Document Analysis And Examination Of Attitudes Toward Transgender Membership Eligibility In Single-Sex, Greek-Letter, Social Fraternities And Sororities, William Wallace Weaver

Student Theses and Dissertations

Because the civil rights of the LGBT community have risen to the forefront in American culture since the turn of the twenty-first century, this study sought to analyze membership eligibility policies and attitudes of single-sex, Greek-letter, social fraternal organizations in regards to transgender individuals. Title IX of the United States Education Amendment of 1972 provides protection from discrimination by institutes of higher learning that receive federal financial assistance. However, section 1681 of Title IX provides an exemption for social fraternities and sororities with primary active membership of students enrolled at a shelter institution. This exemption allows social fraternal organizations to …

Annals Of The Hoồng Bàng Clan: From Ancient Legend To Modern Molecular Biology Evidence, Hoang Huu Phuoc Sep 2020

Annals Of The Hoồng Bàng Clan: From Ancient Legend To Modern Molecular Biology Evidence, Hoang Huu Phuoc

Asia-Pacific Social Science Review

The biography of the Hồng Bàng Clan is considered as a legend, a semi-historical document and an important part of the Viet’s cultural heritage. According to this work, the Viet people are the descendants of Shen Nong (an ancestor of the Han Chinese), migrating from China to the Red River Delta. A large number of scholars have built a Hundred Viet/ 百越 hypothesis, also known as “migration-from-the-north hypothesis” from this document. Throughout the long history, Hồng Bàng legend has created popular misunderstandings of the Viet about their origin and misconceptions for later researchers of various subjects, such as literature, linguistics, …

Prostitusi Online: Penjualan Suami Oleh Istri (Perubahan Relasi Gender Dan Seksualitas Di Era Digital), Vinita Susanti

Jurnal Hukum & Pembangunan

This article discusses online prostitution in the digital age, by showing changes in gender relations between victims and perpetrators, which are analyzed with the view of radical feminists and Bourdieu's theory, symbolic violence. Women in gender ideology are placed as victims, so in this article there is social deconstruction, where women occupy positions as perpetrators. This change was demonstrated through an online prostitution case: the selling of a husband by a wife. The discussion begins with the case of online prostitution, women in reality studies: victims of online prostitution, the study of radical feminist thought and symbolic violence from Bourdieu's …

Flight Intentions Among Residents In Crime-Ridden Neighborhoods: A Pls-Sem Assessment, William Wee-Lim Hew, Gerald Guan-Gan Goh, Angel Boon-Yee Low, Siok-Hwa Lau

Asia-Pacific Social Science Review

Building sustainable communities is fast becoming a common principle in urban development, and a sustainable community is one that has a prevailing social order and strong cohesion among its members. Today, rising crime is destabilizing traditional neighborhoods by creating fear, which leads to residential turnover. This study aims to assess whether strengthening social cohesion by communities of practice and knowledge-sharing behavior may prevent residents from harboring intentions to leave. A framework based on environmental psychology principles has been developed; communities of practice and knowledge-sharing behavior are believed to stimulate residential satisfaction, which acts as a counteraction to flight intention. A …

The Role Of Entrepreneur’S Financial Sophistication On The Nexus Of Business Strategy And Sustainability Indicators Of Philippine Microenterprises, Sheevun Di O. Guliman

Asia-Pacific Social Science Review

The Philippine microenterprises sector is considered as an important stimulus of the country’s economic growth. Previous studies have cited that the struggles faced by micro and small entrepreneurs are brought about by the difficulty in access to finance and the lack of entrepreneurs’ financial literacy and inadequate business acumen. Anchored on the resource- based view theory, the primary objective of this study is to determine the role of financial sophistication, as a human capital resource, and its components, on the link between the strategy–sustainability indicator relationship. Based on a study of 384 micro-entrepreneurs from the National Capital Region, results of …

Fixing Social Media: Toward A Democratic Digital Commons, Michael Kwet Sep 2020

Fixing Social Media: Toward A Democratic Digital Commons, Michael Kwet

Markets, Globalization & Development Review

In the past few years, big Social Media networks like Facebook, Twitter, and YouTube have received intense scrutiny from the intellectual classes. This article critiques the dominant strain of criticism, the neo-Brandeisian School of antitrust, for its narrow focus on “regulated competition” as an appropriate means to “fix social media”. This essay calls for a socialist alternative: a democratic social media commons based on free and open source technology, decentralization, and democratic socialist legal solutions. It reviews how existing solutions like the Fediverse and LibreSocial work, and how they may provide answers for a better way forward.

‘Coronated’ Consumption In The Viral Market, Soonkwan Hong Sep 2020

‘Coronated’ Consumption In The Viral Market, Soonkwan Hong

Markets, Globalization & Development Review

The universal exposure to the virus has disrupted institutions, redefined values, and reshaped systems, including the market. Idling, uncertainty, and liquidity encapsulate the ever-precarious individual lives and the reflexive socio-politico-cultural changes. These conditions and consequences nonetheless create paradoxical opportunities in the viral market. The new meaning of connectivity that promotes high-viscosity relationships and high-visibility identities will transform the market to better acknowledge and support humans and the new sociality.

How The Covid-19 Pandemic Is Challenging Consumption, Marine Cambefort Sep 2020

How The Covid-19 Pandemic Is Challenging Consumption, Marine Cambefort

Markets, Globalization & Development Review

COVID-19 has led consumers to question their consumption patterns. Although some management research has already highlighted consumption trends resulting from the virus outbreak, very few studies explore how the current pandemic challenges consumption. Three trends are identified: the downsizing of consumption, emergence of anti-globalization sentiments, and negative consumer reactions to the misconduct of brands/companies. First, the lockdown was an opportunity for people to test a simpler lifestyle by reducing their level of consumption, having realized that over-consumption does not make them happy and questioned its negative impact on the environment. Second, the pandemic may reinforce anti-globalization ideas, leading consumers to …

Journal of Mind and Medical Sciences

We present the case of a 31-year-old patient, without cardiovascular risk factors, without significant pathological or family history of cardiovascular disease, who was diagnosed with severe coronary artery disease, left main bifurcation localization, which required surgical coronary revascularization. The angiographic and intraoperative aspect excluded the most common causes of non-atherosclerotic causes of coronary lesions. Vasculitis was another possible etiology but was also excluded based on the normal clinical examination, negative inflammation markers, lack of diffuse vascular impairment, TPHA and negative VDRL. Prolonged mental stress can lead to accelerated progression of atherosclerosis by inducing endothelial dysfunction, our patient describing a “burnout …

Negative Consequences Of Innovation-Igniting Urban Developments: Empirical Evidence From Three Us Cities, Ahoura Zandiatashbar, Carla Maria Kayanan

Faculty Publications, Urban and Regional Planning

Emergent economic development policies reflect the challenges urban growth coalitions face in attracting the footloose tech-entrepreneurs of the global economy. This convergence between the focus on place and the harnessing of global capital has led to the proliferation of innovation-igniting urban developments (IIUD)—place-based economic development strategies to boost the local knowledge economy. Economic developers are using IIUD strategies to convert areas of the city into entrepreneurial “launch pads” for innovation. However, because these developments remain young, considerations to implement IIUDs lack an evidence-base to show the potential for negative consequences on the communities where they are embedded. This research addresses …

Distributed Cognition In Teams Is Influenced By Type Of Task And Nature Of Member Interactions, R. S. Tindale, Jeremy R. Winget, Verlin B. Hinsz

Psychology: Faculty Publications and Other Works

In contemporary organizations, many if not most teams work on cognitive or information processing tasks (Hinsz, Tindale, & Vollrath, 1997). The past 50 years of research has taught us much about how information is accessed, created, attended to, and processed as groups attempt to complete various tasks. However, many of the information processing effects that have been observed are at least somewhat task specific, yet little research has focused specifically on tasks and how their information processing requirements differ. In this chapter, we discuss how task differences can impact how groups use and process information and how different information distribution …
