Beyond Victims & Villains: Teaching Cleland With Haywood & Behn, Christopher Nagle
ABO: Interactive Journal for Women in the Arts, 1640–1830
This essay explores strategies for teaching Cleland's Memoirs of a Woman of Pleasure (Fanny Hill) in the introductory literature classroom, and why it might be especially valuable to do so at a time when issues surrounding sexual violence, rape culture, and the politics of consent continue to be prominent inside and outside the college classroom.

Journal of Human Sciences and Extension
As Extension assumes a more prominent role in health promotion efforts at the national and local levels, it is increasingly important to build strong, sustainable partnerships with organizations that address health and health disparities across the socio-ecological model. Given the role that the built environment plays in fostering and impeding health and physical activity, we argue that state and local Extension staff should build and maintain strong partnerships with organizations that carry out this work at the national, state, and local levels, such as Parks and Recreation departments. This article presents a case study of how Extension staff in one …
New Poetry And Old Cathay : Translational Sinography In The Early Twentieth-Century English Literary World, Qingyang Lin
New Poetry And Old Cathay : Translational Sinography In The Early Twentieth-Century English Literary World, Qingyang Lin
Lingnan Theses (MPhil & PhD)
This thesis looks into the culture of reading, translating, and publishing classical Chinese poetry in the English literary world between the 1890s and the 1920s. It explores the mediating and constructive roles of translation (broadly construed) in the formation of knowledge about Chinese literature by focusing on an unconventional segment of the field – poet-translators who integrate Chinese poetry with the pursuit of literary modernism, whose avid experimentalism and lack of sinological credentials run counter to the fidelity principle of translation. I try to foreground the dynamism of this literary contact zone by correlating three dimensions of networks: the transtextual …
Finishing Time, I-Poems And 'The Pains Of Release' Into The Community After Punishment, J Parsons
Finishing Time, I-Poems And 'The Pains Of Release' Into The Community After Punishment, J Parsons
School of Law, Humanities and Social Sciences
Criminalised individuals remain one of the most vilified, marginalised and excluded social groups. This is particularly felt and enacted on release from prison, yet limited attention is paid to the lived experience of the ‘pains of release’ and to the narratives of former prisoners. ‘Finishing Time’ is a two-year project (2018-2020), funded by a discretionary grant from the Independent Social Research Foundation (ISRF), that aims to explore the lived experience of resettlement into the community after punishment. Overall, the research has become focused on how individual identities are formed through storytelling without assuming that identities are fixed or stable. It …

A Sociological View On Designing A Sustainable Online Community For K–12 Teachers: A Systematic Review, Dabae Lee, Jiyoon Jung, Suhkyung Shin, Anne Otternbreit-Leftwich, Krista Glazewski
Faculty Articles
As a way to support teachers’ professional development activities and build communities of practice for teachers, education researchers and practitioners have put considerable effort into building an online learning community for K–12 teachers to create a venue to facilitate teachers’ joint knowledge construction. However, a substantial number of such online communities have failed due to lack of participation of members. Therefore, it is critical to understand how to design a sustainable community that fulfills members’ needs and elicits active participation of members. In this literature review, we adopted a sociological framework to investigate how to create a sustainable online community. …

The Culture Gap: The Role Of Culture In Successful Refugee Settlement, Chelsea Lorraine Riley
The Culture Gap: The Role Of Culture In Successful Refugee Settlement, Chelsea Lorraine Riley
Honors College Theses
Globally, the displacement of persons is reaching record numbers, including millions of refugees seeking safety outside of their native countries. The existing literature on factors of successful refugee settlement lacks specific quantitative analysis, and most of the available information on the role of culture is limited to psychological and social research. I expect that large perceived differences in the culture of the refugee and the culture of the country in which they settle will cause a combination of xenophobic public responses and restrictive government policies, and therefore will be negatively related to successful social integration of those refugees. I assess …
Post-Reunification Services: Resources To Improve Family Unity, Jordan D. Spires
Post-Reunification Services: Resources To Improve Family Unity, Jordan D. Spires
Honors College Theses
While there is a great deal of research pertaining to effective foster care reunification strategies and resources, there is a significant gap in the literature surrounding services for families, post-reunification. This is primarily due to a lack of resources for families following reunification and scarce research on the topic. Families who are reunified from foster care are at a critical point in terms of continued family unity, and they need additional support during this time of transition to prevent future reentry into foster care. While working towards reunification, families are provided with services and resources to help stabilize and unify …

This paper reports the results of a single case design pilot study of a music therapy intervention [the Active Music Engagement (AME)] for young children (age 3.51 to 4.53 years) undergoing hematopoietic stem cell transplantation (HCST) and their caregivers. The primary aims of the study were to determine feasibility/acceptability of the AME intervention protocol and data collection in the context of HCST. Secondary aims were to examine caregivers' perceptions of the benefit of AME and whether there were changes in child and caregiver cortisol levels relative to the AME intervention. Results indicated that the AME could be implemented in this …

The Use Of Empiricism, Rationalism And Positivism In Library And Information Science Research, Nadia Abbas Shah, Amjid Khan, Pervaiz Ahmad, Muhammad Arshad
Library Philosophy and Practice (e-journal)
This paper aims to study the significance/importance of “empiricism”, “rationalism” and “positivism” and their application in library and information science (LIS) research. The objectives of this paper covered in two parts. Part one describes the historical development of these epistemologies, explore its main characteristics and presents the criticism that has been nurtured against these views. In the second part, the importance and use of these epistemologies in the context of LIS research have been discussed. Since philosophy is the least touched subject in LIS, therefore, limited literature is available to review these epistemologies from the perspective of LIS.

Journal of Critical Scholarship on Higher Education and Student Affairs
Seven Black women graduate students from across different functional areas of higher education work in solidarity to write a collective Black Feminist Autoethnography (BFA) (Griffin, 2012) about our experiences at our respective colleges and universities. BFA is a "theoretical and methodological means for Black female academics to critically narrate the pride and pain of Black womanhood" (Griffin, 2012, p. 1). This article centers Black feminist scholarship as a framework to reflexively interpret how we as seven Black women navigate within, against, and beyond the academy to address dominant narratives that affect our professional and personal experiences. We use contemporary music …

“Diversity & Inclusion & Free Speech & Civility”: Oppression And Marginalization Through Diversity Rhetoric, Kamden Strunk, Hannah Carson Baggett, Ivan E. Watts
Journal of Critical Scholarship on Higher Education and Student Affairs
As higher education institutions increasingly roll out diversity and inclusion initiatives, they intend to signal particular commitments. In this manuscript, we employ critical literacy as a framework for understanding the text and subtext of moments on our campus related to diversity and inclusion offices and initiatives. We first present the text of two particular moments, including the actual text of signs, messages, and conversations, but also including as a text the actions and inactions of university administrators. For each moment, we first present the text, including the actual or physical text(s), the superficial meaning(s), and the sequence of events. …

A Critical Literacy Approach To Student Affairs Education, Brian J. Reece, Ryan M. Rish
Journal of Critical Scholarship on Higher Education and Student Affairs
This article argues for the use of critical literacy as a critical pedagogy in student affairs practice. The authors describe how some currents of the student affairs literature have shifted toward a focus on student learning and critical approaches to student development and learning. Subsequently, they discuss the social turn in our understanding of literacy and a related move toward critical approaches to understanding literacy as a social practice. Finally, they present a synthesis of the literature, which results in considerations for approaching higher education student affairs contexts through a critical literacy framework, exposing gaps and areas for future theorizing …

English Department: Research for Change - Wicked Problems in Our World
For many years, people of color have had an unsteady relationship with police departments and law enforcement due to police misconduct, use of force, and police brutality. We’ve had many of the same conversations over and over again about what we can do to bring upon change within our departments, but no true, consistent action has been taken. In this paper we discuss multiple solutions to help address the issue of police misconduct, the need for police and society reform, and ways we can work towards mending the relationship between citizens and our police departments. In today’s society, change is …

English Department: Research for Change - Wicked Problems in Our World
The rise of the super rich dramatically rose in the 1980’s. The once dominant oil and gas sector was taken over by finance and technology overall. We are able to see a rise of these super rich, or the one percent, and even how quickly they were able to recover from the 2008 Recession. Now, the one percent are making continuous substantial gains in a current world, where a pandemic has struck and many are struggling. I talk about the use of public policy in order to regain this economic gap between the one percent and the rest of the …

National Income Inequality And International Business Expansion, Nathaniel C. Lupton, Guoliang Frank Jiang, Luis F. Escobar, Alfredo Jiménez
Faculty Publications
We examine the extent to which host country income inequality influences multinational enterprises’ (MNE) expansion strategy for foreign production investment, depending on their specific strategic objectives. Applying a transaction cost framework, we predict that national income inequality has an inverted U-shaped relationship with foreign production investment. As inequality increases, MNEs accrue lower transaction costs arising from interactions with various local actors, leading to higher probability of investment. As income inequality increases further, its effect on location attractiveness will become negative, as its attraction effect is increasingly offset by additional monitoring, bargaining, and security costs owing to the more fractious nature …
The Context And Enactment Of Faith-Based Social Entrepreneurship, Bruce R. Borquist
The Context And Enactment Of Faith-Based Social Entrepreneurship, Bruce R. Borquist
Business as Mission Theses and Dissertations
Faith-based organisations have been at the forefront of efforts to meet human need and effect positive social change for centuries, and they continue to make significant contributions to social welfare. However, a paucity of empirical research into the nature of faith-based social entrepreneurship limits knowledge and theory development and hinders the effectiveness of faith-based initiatives. In response, this thesis explores how a religious worldview intersects with values, gender and institutional logics to influence social entrepreneurial activity. The thesis thereby aims to develop new theoretical insights into the contextual embeddedness of the process of social entrepreneurship.
Qualitative, interpretive research based on …

Technology has given rise to many digital platforms that enable seamless social connections, instant transactions, and high-definition visuals and imagery, to name a few. It is amazing how far technology has brought us to where we are today. Nowadays, by using a laptop or a mobile device, we reap the benefits that come with this technological advancement. From expanding our professional networks online to learning a new recipe from an online content creator, the possibilities seem endless in a digital world. There is, however, one more aspect of our lives that is significantly impacted by this rapid change—the very nature …

Struggle And Martyrdom: Abusive Power And Root Narrative In The Aftermath Of The Eritrean Revolution, Solon Simmons
Peace and Conflict Studies
In this paper I have applied root narrative theory to the case of conflict in Eritrea, a small African country along the Red Sea that has been embroiled in conflict with its neighbors and the international community on and off since at least 1961. Examining a small sample of representative texts from the government of Eritrea and from international critics of the regime, I demonstrate that these parties—different moral languages that make it almost impossible for each side to see the point of view of the other. Using the semiotic structure of the story system implied by root narrative theory …

Exposing Evil: My Lai, The Media, And American Atrocities In Asia, 1941-1975, Joshua Caleb Greer
Master's Theses
In both the Pacific War against Japan from 1941 to 1945 and the Korean War from 1950 to 1953, United States combat troops—emboldened by a combat culture of dehumanization through racism and a military that enacted policies of attrition— committed atrocities against Asian soldiers and civilians. This trend continued into the Vietnam War unabated beginning in 1965. Incidents of atrocities committed by American troops overseas were not publicly discussed until the My Lai Massacre of 1968 was revealed to the American people in 1969. Once the massacre became a national news story published in outlets all over the country, American …

Paternal Presence As A Protective Factor For A Black Daughter's Teen Births, Marquitta Dorsey
Journal of Family Strengths
Associations between father presence in the home and delayed adolescent sexual activity is well established among middle-class populations. However, considering the prevalence of nonresident fathers among Black households, it is necessary to explore whether such associations extend to early adolescent births for Black adolescent females, and whether mother’s timing of sexual debut and level of education confirm previous findings and predict early teen birth outcomes among Black females, who disproportionately represent the second highest teen birth rate (Hamilton, Rossen & Branum, 2016). The Centers for Disease Control and Prevention urges researchers to explore within group differences among groups of adolescent …

"In recent years, innovation, entrepreneurship, and globalization have become popular concepts in relation to technology design. While some major corporations and other entities continue pushing for globalization through the design and dissemination of digital technologies, researchers also caution against the biases and oppression that can be embedded in US culture’s 'near-ubiquitous use of algorithmically driven software.'1 Countering some previously established orientations to globalization and entrepreneurship, this chapter highlights the importance of building technological innovation with (rather than just for or about) historically, structurally, and systematically marginalized and underrepresented communities. The overall purpose of this chapter is to showcase how …
