Early Adolescent Social Isolation, Hope, And Well-Being During A Pandemic, Alicen Hauck Jan 2020

Early Adolescent Social Isolation, Hope, And Well-Being During A Pandemic, Alicen Hauck

Electronic Theses and Dissertations

Social isolation is often divided into two subcategories of objective and subjective. The COVID-19 pandemic has led to an increase in objective social isolation in the form of social distancing and fewer social events. Research delineating the relationship between social isolation and adolescent well-being utilize measures of subjective social isolation. Whereas, measures of objective social isolation are more commonly used with geriatric populations. Therefore, there is a lack of information specific to the impact of objective social isolation on adolescent well-being, particularly during a pandemic. The effects of social isolation due to COVID-19 will not be short lived. Deciphering the …

Weighted Blankets: Impact On Prn Medication Use In The Inpatient Mental Health Setting Review Of Literature, Catherine Andela-Ruth

Doctor of Nursing Practice (DNP) Practice Innovation Projects

Introduction: Weighted Blankets (WBs) are a non-pharmacological treatment that can be used to reduce anxiety, agitation, and insomnia in the inpatient mental health (MH) setting. Typically, as-needed (PRN) medications are used first-line with these symptoms. The addition of PRN medications to scheduled medications can cause drug-drug interactions, dependency, adverse side effects, increased healthcare costs and reduced medication compliance. Evidence Summary: WBs are a sensory based intervention (SBI) that provides deep pressure stimulation (DPS). DPS, an evidence-based intervention, has shown to reduce stress symptoms and increase calming symptoms. WBs are a form of DPS used in the inpatient MH setting. WBs …

Icwa Downunder: Exploring The Costs And Benefits Of Enacting An Australian Version Of The United States' Indian Child Welfare Act, Marcia Zug Jan 2020

Icwa Downunder: Exploring The Costs And Benefits Of Enacting An Australian Version Of The United States' Indian Child Welfare Act, Marcia Zug

Canadian Journal of Family Law

Australian Indigenous Advocates have long sought the passage of Indigeous child-welfare legislation similar to the United States’s Indian Child Welfare Act. Recently, the Australian government has indicated it is receptive to the enactment of such legislation. However, an Australian version of the ICWA is not as simple as it sounds. The legal status of the Indigenous communities of Australia and American Indian tribes is vastly different thus, many of the ICWA’s provisions, particularly those based on a recognition of Indigenous sovereignty, would require significant modifications before they coud be applied in Australia. These modifications mean an Australian ICWA …

Providing Educational Hospitality For International Students: A Student Affairs Intervention For Higher Education, Christie Armstrong Jan 2020

Providing Educational Hospitality For International Students: A Student Affairs Intervention For Higher Education, Christie Armstrong

West Chester University Master’s Theses

This thesis examines past and current political tensions and anti-immigrant sentiment along with the impacts they have had on the United States University. I focus on the international student experience attaining access to a United States education and their experiences once they are on campus. The context given proves how past and current events may hinder international students to feel welcome. I explore ways in which the United States university may create a more hospitable experience for them. An intervention of bridging the gap between domestic and international students is introduced as a step toward a more hospitable, educationally enriching …

Negotiating Difference: A Critical Discourse Analysis Of Writing Center Interactions Between Peer Tutors And Multilingual Tutees, Lisa Dimaio Jan 2020

Negotiating Difference: A Critical Discourse Analysis Of Writing Center Interactions Between Peer Tutors And Multilingual Tutees, Lisa Dimaio

West Chester University Doctoral Projects

Collier (1995), Cummins (1981), and Mitchell, Destino and Karam (1997) claimed that it could take ten years for multilingual (ML) students to become proficient in academic English. In 2001, the Conference on College Composition and Communication [CCCC] Statement on Second-Language Writing and Writers asserted the same. Yet, faculty might judge the writing of ML students as deficient because they write with an “accent” (Bruce and Rafoth, 2016; Leki, 1992; Matsuda and Cox, 2011; Severino and Deifell, 2011). Consequently, ML students often seek assistance from peer tutors at the university writing center. In this dissertation, I perform a qualitative study to …

Family Environment And Attachment In Relation To Complex Trauma And C-Ptsd, Susan Elizabeth Ocean Jan 2020

Family Environment And Attachment In Relation To Complex Trauma And C-Ptsd, Susan Elizabeth Ocean

Graduate Student Theses, Dissertations, & Professional Papers

Childhood traumatic experiences occurring during critical developmental stages are strongly linked to poor mental health outcomes during adulthood, including PTSD. Yet, individuals who have experienced multiple traumas (and across developmental stages) report a profile of symptoms that is not well-represented by traditional PTSD diagnostic criteria. Recent research suggests that resulting post-traumatic stress after the experience of complex trauma should be considered a separate, yet related, disorder from the well-established PTSD. Since traumatic experiences are commonplace and often detrimental, establishing which factors contribute to risk and resilience is of great importance. Having secure attachment to a primary caregiver and family cohesion …

The Home As A Site Of Family Communicated Narrative Sense-Making: Grief, Meaning, And Identity Through “Cleaning Out The Closet”, Kendyl A. Barney

Graduate Student Theses, Dissertations, & Professional Papers

This study utilized communicated narrative sense-making theory to explore the process of sorting through a deceased loved one’s belongings and changing the home after loss (referred to as “cleaning out the closet”), as the site of family communication and storytelling. Through storytelling, families make order of the disordered experience that is bereavement by negotiating meaning, identity, and family. The stories told about and within the process of “cleaning out the closet” elicit rich insight on each family’s experience with bereavement, loss, and life with each other. “Cleaning out the closet” narratives shed light on the interactions that occur between family …

Global Injury Morbidity And Mortality From 1990 To 2017: Results From The Global Burden Of Disease Study 2017, Spencer L. James, Chris D. Castle, Zachary V. Dingels, Jack T. Fox

Open Access archive

Background Past research in population health trends has shown that injuries form a substantial burden of population health loss. Regular updates to injury burden assessments are critical. We report Global Burden of Disease (GBD) 2017 Study estimates on morbidity and mortality for all injuries. methods We reviewed results for injuries from the GBD 2017 study. GBD 2017 measured injury-specific mortality and years of life lost (YLLs) using the Cause of Death Ensemble model. To measure non-fatal injuries, GBD 2017 modelled injury-specific incidence and converted this to prevalence and years lived with disability (YLDs). YLLs and YLDs were summed to calculate …

Using A Faculty Learning Community To Promote Interdisciplinary Course Reform, Rhonda Bishop, Victor Piercey, Mischelle Stone

Journal of Mathematics and Science: Collaborative Explorations

As part of a multi-institution, National Science Foundation (NSF) grant-funded project, Ferris State University (FSU) joins a national effort to reform mathematics curricula. Researchers from FSU developed and facilitated a faculty learning community (FLC) as one strategy to redesign the traditional approach to the quantitative reasoning skill development of students in the departments of mathematics, nursing, social work, and the College of Business. Over the course of one academic year, the FLC provided an interdisciplinary faculty connection to develop pedagogical approaches that integrated cross-curricular concepts and context from each discipline. The FLC not only produced uniquely designed, learning-centered approaches to …

Cross-Age Peer Mentoring In A Low-Income Rural Community: A 20-Year Retrospective On A School-Community Partnership, Donna M. San Antonio Dr. Jan 2020

Cross-Age Peer Mentoring In A Low-Income Rural Community: A 20-Year Retrospective On A School-Community Partnership, Donna M. San Antonio Dr.

Faculty Scholarship

Cross-age peer mentoring programs are not always effective, and some researchers have questioned the effectiveness of this model. In this article, we use evaluation data to describe a project that has been going for twenty years. The project enrolls high school students as mentors to struggling elementary school students. The article reviews the current literature and details the perceptions of mentors and mentees regarding relational and academic benefits and disappointments. Both mentors and mentees report that the project gave them purpose, motivation, and a sense of belonging in the school and community. They also describe frustrations and regrets. Some findings …

Analysis Of Teaching Styles, Adult Learning Theories, And Factors Influencing Teaching Style Preferences In Adult Education Instructors: Implication For Practice, Beatrice Chemaiyo Lele Jan 2020

Analysis Of Teaching Styles, Adult Learning Theories, And Factors Influencing Teaching Style Preferences In Adult Education Instructors: Implication For Practice, Beatrice Chemaiyo Lele

Theses and Dissertations

The teacher is the most influential and important variable in the classroom for student achievement. Therefore, the need for teachers to identify and utilize best teaching practices is fundamental to a progressing society. Despite the literature advocating and proposing the student-centered approach as the preferred method of teaching in adult education, most empirical studies indicate that teachers employed the traditional teacher-centered approach. The purpose of this study was to examine the teaching style preferences of adult education instructors and the influence of gender, age, participation in professional development in adult education, years of teaching experience, teaching subject, and levels of …

Children’S Participation Rights In Child Welfare Systems: Identifying Opportunities For Implementation, Anna M. Cody Jan 2020

Children’S Participation Rights In Child Welfare Systems: Identifying Opportunities For Implementation, Anna M. Cody

Theses and Dissertations

Children’s participation rights are critically important for supporting children’s well-being. Studies across the world consistently demonstrate that children and youth feel uninvolved, silenced and marginalized within the child welfare context which has a direct impact on their physical safety as well as their subjective well-being. There has been a shift in US policy and practice towards recognizing the value and importance of engaging youth, older youth in particular, in being involved with planning for their care and for their future. However, definitions of what meaningful “youth engagement” might look like within the child welfare context generally lack clarity. In addition, …

Analysis Of Stigmatic Content In State Mental Health Legislative Proposals, David L. Conley Jan 2020

Analysis Of Stigmatic Content In State Mental Health Legislative Proposals, David L. Conley

Theses and Dissertations

Despite the proven effectiveness of mental health interventions, services remain limited across the country. Social workers have repeatedly advocated for increased funding, but mental healthcare gaps persist. Disparities could be addressed through the policy process, but critical proposals often do not pass. One of the biggest barriers is the concept of stigma, which could extend into legislatures and influence mental health-related policy outcomes as a form of structural stigma. Factors that influence legislator voting behavior are found in the literature, but studies have not explicitly focused on structural stigma or mental health-specific policy outcomes. Thus, the present study aimed to …

A Quantitative Study Of Denver's Breed-Specific Legislation, Sloane M. Hawes, Devrim Ikizler, Katy Loughney, Aurora Temple Barnes Esq., Justin F. Marceau, Philip Tedeschi, Kevin N. Morris

Animal Law Review

In August of 1989, the City and County of Denver, Colorado enacted legislation that prohibits the presence of all ‘pit bull-type dogs’ (PBTDs) within the city limits. In Denver, PBTDs are defined as: American pit bull terrier, American Staffordshire terrier, or Staffordshire bull terrier. In the thirty years the ‘pit bull ban’ has been in place, the City and County of Denver and its animal control agency, Denver Animal Protection, have committed substantial resources to removing PBTDs from the community, including patrolling communities and responding to complaints made by neighbors, conducting thorough breed evaluations of suspected PBTDs, and kenneling PBTDs …

Health Literacy And Discharge Planning In Social Work Practice, Michele Munzner Jan 2020

Health Literacy And Discharge Planning In Social Work Practice, Michele Munzner

Walden Dissertations and Doctoral Studies

Low health literacy is a public health crisis, currently, there is limited research on social worker engagement with the low health literate patient. The research questions for this study examined health literacy knowledge in medical social workers and how their MSW curricula built their knowledge of health literacy. It also explored challenges that arise when discharge planning for patients with low health literacy. It also asked what social workers can do to aid patients with limited health literacy during the discharge planning process. This basic qualitative research study used criterion sampling and was informed by the socioecological model. Data collection …
