Are Logic And Math Relevant To Social Debates?, Michael A. Lewis Jan 2020

Are Logic And Math Relevant To Social Debates?, Michael A. Lewis

Journal of Humanistic Mathematics

Social debates, as well as discussions about certain highly charged issues, such as racism, gender identity, and sexuality, usually turn on the uses or mentions of key words. That is, the conclusions we can draw from such discussions depend on how certain terms are used or mentioned in them. Yet participants in social debates may often fail to precisely define their terms or fail to make important distinctions in terms uttered by others. Both logic and mathematics pay attention to the importance of precise definitions when it comes to engaging in discussions, arguments, or proofs. Logic also makes an important …

The Zakat, Infaq, And Alms Farmer Economic Empowerment Model, Udin Saripudin, Fathurrahman Djamil, Ahmad Rodoni

Library Philosophy and Practice (e-journal)

This study departs from the fact that the partial empowerment model of farmers has failed to improve the welfare of farmers. Therefore we need a comprehensive farmer empowerment model that integrates several partial empowerment models using Islamic economic principles. The intended integral empowerment model includes; empowerment in the area of capital access (financial institutions), the field of crop marketing (market access), and the field of capacity building (assistance and training). The purpose of this study is to design a comprehensive model of farmer economic empowerment, which integrates a model of capital assistance (natural capital), assistance, and marketing of agricultural products …

Parental Deployment And Healthcare Utilization In Adolescents With Migraines And Other Somatic Symptoms, Charles Zimbrick-Rogers, Ashleigh R. Drake, Anne Peruski, Samuel Stinnette, Brian Adams Jan 2020

Parental Deployment And Healthcare Utilization In Adolescents With Migraines And Other Somatic Symptoms, Charles Zimbrick-Rogers, Ashleigh R. Drake, Anne Peruski, Samuel Stinnette, Brian Adams

Journal of Adolescent and Family Health

Somatic symptoms in adolescents are associated with psychosocial stress. Parental military deployment can function as a stressor for adolescents. A retrospective cohort study was developed exploring relationships between health care utilization, a proxy for symptomatology, and sponsor deployment in adolescents with somatic symptoms. Data was obtained from the Military Health System Data Repository. Migraine headaches was the most common somatic symptom diagnosis. Parental deployment was overall associated with a 27% decrease in visits for somatic symptoms. For adolescents whose sponsor was female, deployment was associated with a 34% decrease in visits. This pattern is inconsistent with prior research on somatic …

Vietnamese Resilience Assessment: Exploratory And Confirmatory Factor Analysis For Scale Validation, Loan Le

Education (PhD) Dissertations

This study examines the validity of the Vietnamese Resilience Assessment (VRA), the Vietnamese-translated version of the Resilience Youth Development Module (RYDM), which is considered to be a reliable and reasonable instrument to survey the levels of external and internal assets for American students; its appropriateness to be used with Vietnamese students has yet been determined. To assist in validating the VRA, this study carried out both an exploratory (EFA) and confirmatory (CFA) factor analysis using the dataset that was obtained from the results of the Healthy Student Survey-Vietnam study (HSSV; Hass et al., 2014). Specifically, the study sought out to …

Preliminary Data On The Relation Between Acculturation, Weight, And Sleep In Recently Immigrated Adolescents From Central America, Aleyda Arreola, Amanda Venta Jan 2020

Preliminary Data On The Relation Between Acculturation, Weight, And Sleep In Recently Immigrated Adolescents From Central America, Aleyda Arreola, Amanda Venta

Journal of Adolescent and Family Health

Data on Hispanic immigrants links increased acculturation with behavioral health concerns, though most data focuses on adults and Mexican-Americans. The aim of this study was to test the hypothesis that acculturation and acculturative stress act as predictors of increased body mass index (BMI) and decreased sleep in a sample of 62 recently immigrated Central American adolescents. Findings indicated a significant link between increased language acculturation and decreased sleep in bivariate analyses, but failed to confirm relations using multivariate methods or document relations to weight. Preliminary conclusions suggest that concerns regarding obesity documented in other immigrant groups may not be relevant …

Applying Academic Selection Criterion To Work-Integrated Learning Programmes: Risk Management Or Perpetuating Inequality?, Denise Jackson

Research outputs 2014 to 2021

This study explores whether academic selection criterion should be imposed on students wishing to participate in work-integrated learning (WIL) during their degree studies. Its conceptual framework addresses the limitations of human capital theory and draws on theories about social and cultural capital to understand the role of WIL in developing individual employability. It explores whether WIL should be open to all students, particularly given those who perform less well academically may be of lower socio-economic status with fewer networks and less developed cultural capital. The relationship between academic course average and workplace performance during WIL was examined, rated by 2012 …

Librarian Publications & Presentations

The CFLA-FCAB Truth & Reconciliation Report advises that libraries address “structural biases” in knowledge organization. This session explores the effects a Western worldview has on our ability to successfully “integrate Indigenous epistemologies” and decolonize our approaches to knowledge organization, the need for respectful consultation with Indigenous communities, and linked data as a way forward. This session features Camille Callison, Anne Carr-Wiggin and F. Tim Knight and is one of several sessions at OLA SC 2020 concentrating on the respectful decolonization of Canadian libraries.

Organizational Change: The Experiences Of Practitioners Transitioning To A Fee-For-Service Model, Anthony Zazzarino, Zakia Clay, Ann Reilly

Journal of Human Services: Training, Research, and Practice

Many human service agencies are in the midst of a transition for a fee-for-service model. Through the midst of the transition, organizations must shift the culture of their agency and adapt to the new service delivery approach. Some organizational changes can create feelings of insecurity among staff, fewer resources, and greater potential for employee burnout. Though there is some research that provides valuable information, it often fails to highlight the individual experiences of the worker. This phenomenological study begins to explore the experiences and perceptions of practitioners working in supported housing agencies during the transition to a fee-for-service approach. The …

Evaluating Special Education Journals With H-Type Indices And Journal Impact Factors, Zao Liu

Library Philosophy and Practice (e-journal)

This paper evaluates special education journals using the h-type indices and journal impact factor. Fifty-seven special education journals were selected from the special education category of Clarivate Analytics’ Journal Citation Reports (JCR) and two published lists of special education journals. The journal h-indices were compared among themselves and with their available impact factors. The correlation analysis of the metrics found very strong positive relationships between the journal h-type indices and between the Web of Science h-index and the journal impact factors. Strong positive relationships between the Google Scholar h-type indices and the impact factors were also found. The paper offers …

The QIC-WD is dedicated to building evidence. Foundational work in the early years of the Center included combing the literature from multiple fields (e.g., business, education, industrial-organizational psychology) to inform strategies to strengthen the child welfare workforce. In 2018, Casey Family Programs reported on how the Texas Department of Family and Protective Services (DFPS) reduced caseworker turnover by implementing multiple changes to system operations (How did Texas decrease caseworker turnover and stabilize its workforce?). This post discusses how the QICWD is working with eight other jurisdictions and building on what was learned in Texas. According to the report, Texas initiated …

University of Dayton junior Katie Gross was struck by an experience she had at an exhibit that featured stories from Dayton community members, along with their portraits. Influenced by not only their words, but also their images, she wondered if science could prove the impact of photographs on human perception. Working with a faculty mentor, she developed a study to determine whether including a photo with a narrative influences the way people see another person and process their story.
