Practice Brief: Supporting The Youth Peer Workforce, Maria Hermsen-Kritz Feb 2020

Practice Brief: Supporting The Youth Peer Workforce, Maria Hermsen-Kritz

School of Social Work Faculty Publications and Presentations

Peer support is fast emerging as a promising and widely endorsed addition to the array of mental health services available to young people experiencing serious mental health conditions, yet very little is known about the peer support workforce in general, and even less about the peer workforce engaged specifically in providing services to youth and young adults. While the need for more research into this developing professional population is evident, what data we do have available indicates several challenges that have frequently shown up in implementing the youth peer role, as well as several common themes around what youth peer …

The Time To Question, Rethink And Popularize The Notion Of ‘Women’S Issues’: Lessons From Jordan’S Popular And Labor Movements From 2006 To Now, Sara Ababneh

Journal of International Women's Studies

Jordanian women were an integral part of the Jordanian Popular Movement (al Hirak al Sha’bi al Urduni, Hirak in short) protests in 2011/2012. Yet, despite their large numbers and presence, female protestors did not call for any of the commonly known ‘women’s issues’ (qadaya al mar’a) which include fighting Gender Based Violence (GBV), legal reform, increasing women’s political participation, and women’s economic empowerment. This paper argues that the protestors’ silence concerning most of the problems usually included in the list of ‘women’s issues’ raises the question of how prevalent these issues are (or not) in the lives of Jordanian women. …

Why Are Women’S Self-Help Groups On The Periphery Of Adivasi Movements In India? Insights From Practitioners, Parijat Ghosh, Dibyendu Chaudhuri, Debasish Biswas

Journal of International Women's Studies

‘Adivasi’ is an identity of protest against the oppressive practices of displacement and dispossession faced by tribal communities across India. As the social and political scenario of the vast Central Indian Plateau (CIP), the homeland of many such communities, is shaped by the social dynamics of oppression and resistance, any social or political organisation working in this region for justice and equity has to not only understand this adivasi consciousness of resistance against the concentration of capital and accumulation of surplus through a process of dispossession but also evolve their strategy in the context of adivasi consciousness. The authors have …

The Understanding Of Women’S Movement Activists On The Necessity Of Critical Analysis Of Television Content In Iran, Kobra M. Kachalmi, Lee Yok Fee

Journal of International Women's Studies

Iranian TV tries to legitimize and reinforce sexism and male domination with oppressive gender representation. The current study investigates how critical analysis of media is necessary for Iranian women from the viewpoints of Iranian feminist activists. Using a qualitative approach of semi-structured interviews with 15 Iranian feminist activists, this paper contends that critical reading of media messages is essential for Iranian women. The findings reveal that critical reading of media messages could empower Iranian women to understand how Iranian TV reinforces and naturalizes gender stereotypes and roles. In addition, the Iranian feminist activists believe that because media has a purpose, …

Early Marriage In Bangladesh: A Cross-Sectional Study Exploring The Associated Factors, Ashis Talukder, Muhammad M. Hasan, Shaharior R. Razu, Zobayer Hossain

Journal of International Women's Studies

This cross-sectional study intends to explore the factors associated with the prevalence of early marriage among female teenagers in Bangladesh. Data from the Bangladesh Demographic and Health Survey (BDHS, 2014) were used to meet the study objective. Two binary logistic models were run to estimate the factors that influence early marriage. In Model-I, the covariates were considered in a bivariate setup, and unadjusted odds ratios (UOR) were obtained from Model-II, where all the covariates were taken into account to get the adjusted odds ratio. Results show that the level of education for both females and their partners, religiosity, possession of …

An Engaging, Hands-On Activity For Evaluating Sources Through Problem-Based Learning, Brooke J. Taxakis, Elizabeth Dobbins

Georgia International Conference on Information Literacy

How can we facilitate first-year student engagement with critical Framework concepts, especially in a one-shot class? In this workshop, we will introduce an active learning activity designed to teach source evaluation in a 50-minute class. The activity, which incorporates elements of problem-based learning and uses a flipped classroom approach, was added to our institution’s first-year experience course. Prompting students to consider a local issue, the activity requires students to evaluate sources represented as “source cards,” choose sources they would use in the context of the assignment, and justify their decisions. Motivated by the challenge and relevance of the activity, students …

Reference Librarianship & Justice: History, Practice & Praxis exemplifies its call for an emphasis on social justice and shared ways of knowing in reference librarianship by incorporating contributors with diverse experiences with reference librarianship, as well as maintaining an inclusive definition of reference librarianship and a flexible organizational structure. Spirituality is a subject which is often neglected in nursing education. The purpose of this study was to determine associate degree nursing faculty's perception of their ability to teach the spiritual dimension in the delivery of nursing care. The study explored whether faculty have received training related to spiritual care, how and where nursing programs integrate spirituality education into the curriculum, nursing faculty's understanding of the terms spirituality and spiritual care, and faculty members perception of whether they receive sufficient support and guidance in teaching related to spirituality and spiritual care. Survey research was used in this study.
