Voice Therapy Techniques For Male-To-Female Versus Female-To-Male Transgender Individuals And Stereotypical Gender Beliefs That Affect These Techniques, Bailey Lyman
Honors College Theses
This research was conducted to determine the differences and similarities between the therapeutic techniques used with male-to-female versus female-to-male transgender voice clients resulting from their existing and potentially changing anatomy and physiology. It was also conducted to determine the potential impacts of gender stereotyping on therapeutic techniques and a client’s therapeutic course. A review of the literature suggests that although there are quite a few similarities between the therapeutic techniques of male-to-female and female-to-male voice clients, there are crucial differences in these techniques that must also be considered. A few of the differences include considering a degree of change based …
Stigma Reduction Programming In Monterey County, Don Heading
Stigma Reduction Programming In Monterey County, Don Heading
Capstone Projects and Master's Theses
Mental illness-related stigma is a barrier to societal inclusion and productivity. With nearly one in five individuals being impacted by mental illness in the United States (Substance Abuse and Mental Health Services Administration, 2019), there is a greater need for understanding through education to support those affected by mental illness. Stigma impacts those with mental illness in the realms of employment, housing, and incarceration. The Success Over Stigma Program located within the OMNI Resource Center in Salinas, California addresses the lack of education by offering contact-based community education delivered by those affected by mental illness. The project addressed the need …

Hope Services is an agency that focuses on supporting the community of adults with developmental disabilities. The work there focuses on finding employment avenues for the clients. This population faces difficulty in finding employment opportunities on their own and rely on these services for these resources. Everyone deserves the right to build an income and experience working in their lives. A disability or any obstacle shouldn’t prohibit a person of this opportunity. Due to an overdue stigma towards this group, they have to constantly prove they are fit to work and be productive assets in the workforce. This leads to …
Basic Body Mechanics To Prevent Injuries During A Transfer, Veronica Gutierrez
Basic Body Mechanics To Prevent Injuries During A Transfer, Veronica Gutierrez
Capstone Projects and Master's Theses
There are many informal caregivers providing support to loved ones in their homes. Hiring a trained professional is often a financial barrier, leaving no choice but for a spouse or close relative to assume the role of primary caregiver. Many of them risk injury due to improper body mechanics when helping the patient transfer from one position to another. A four question survey was created to ask the public if they had any caretaker experience, felt comfortable performing a patient transfer, if they knew what a gait belt was, and finally if they were interested in learning a technique that …

Absence is a normal part of childhood for kids going to school because sometimes life happens. Kids get sick, have family emergencies, the family might have to move, or lack consistent transportation to get to school. The Early Learning Program (ELP) is a non-profit organization that provides education for preschool aged children and focuses on making preschool easily accessible, primarily for low-income families. It is not uncommon for some families to take advantage of the ELP by not prioritizing taking their kids to school and getting them there on time. What Is This Feeling I Am Feeling?: Providing An Lgbtq+ Curriculum And School Environment, Joanna Rendon
What Is This Feeling I Am Feeling?: Providing An Lgbtq+ Curriculum And School Environment, Joanna Rendon
Capstone Projects and Master's Theses
Full inclusion within classroom and school environments has been a topic within education for some time. Research has identified ways to make the general education classroom as inclusive as possible, while still continuing to provide the least restrictive way of educating students. However, the inclusion of Lesbian, Gay, Bisexual, Transgender, and Queer/Questioning + perspectives and curriculum in public education has showed little to no improvement. An argument is made that when an inclusive LGBTQ+ curriculum and school environment is provided; students are more likely to succeed academically and feel safer while attending school. In order for all students to thrive …

School Social Workers As Nepantleras In Equity Work For Immigrant Students: A Conceptual Exploration, Sophia Rodriguez, Benjamin Roth, Leticia Villarreal Sosa
School of Social Work Faculty Publications
This article investigates the critical role school social workers play in promoting equity and advocating for immigrant students in K–12 settings. We explore and conceptualize the notion of nepantlera from the work of Gloria Anzaldúa and draw from qualitative data to show how school social workers function as nepantleras in service and advocacy roles for immigrant students. We further argue that the school settings in which these services take place should be understood as borderlands. Throughout the article, we explore the following questions: What is a paradigm for school social worker practice with immigrant students that is informed by the …
Measuring Implicit And Explicit Attitudes Toward Transracial Adoption, Lillian Spadgenske
Measuring Implicit And Explicit Attitudes Toward Transracial Adoption, Lillian Spadgenske
Master's Theses
Attitudes toward Transracial Adoption, or TRA (i.e., White individuals adopting a child of a different race than their own) have been largely positive in a few experimental studies conducted, with only one study (Tinkler & Horne, 2011) employing an implicit measure, the Implicit Association Task (IAT). The current study has focused on assessing attitudes toward TRA families with Black versus Asian children using both explicit and implicit (the IAT) measures of bias. In addition, religiosity was tested as a moderator of the attitudes toward TRA adoption. It was found that individuals had much more supportive attitudes toward transracial families on …

With the maturing of artificial intelligence (AI) and multiagent systems research, we have a tremendous opportunity to direct these advances toward addressing complex societal problems. In pursuit of this goal of AI for social impact, we as AI researchers must go beyond improvements in computational methodology; it is important to step out in the field to demonstrate social impact. To this end, we focus on the problems of public safety and security, wildlife conservation, and public health in low-resource communities, and present research advances in multiagent systems to address one key cross-cutting challenge: how to effectively deploy our limited intervention …
Reducing Suicide By Providing Cognitive Behavioral Therapy For Suicide Prevention, Wendy Larkin
Reducing Suicide By Providing Cognitive Behavioral Therapy For Suicide Prevention, Wendy Larkin
Student Scholarly Projects
Veteran suicide is a serious and persistent national problem, which demands an effective treatment intervention. This Evidence-Based Practice project (EBP) addressed the question: Do patients with a psychiatric in-patient diagnosis of suicide ideation, who after discharge self-elect outpatient Cognitive Behavioral Therapy-Suicide Prevention (CBT-SP) treatment over a 6-week time frame, reduce the likelihood of hospital readmission for suicidal ideation vs. patients who decline CBT-SP treatment and elect Treatment as Usual (TAU)? The literature is prolific in validating that CBT-SP is successful in determining the effectiveness of CBT-SP vs. TAU in reducing suicidal behaviors in adults.
Hospital readmission data were collected on …

Innovative Suicide Screening: Implementation Of An Electronic Tool, Tara Peloza, Kristin Kuharske, Ashley Servi, Michelle Pickett, Frances Kaczor, Amy Ciriacks
General Submissions: Presentations (Oral and Poster)
Adolescent suicide is the third leading cause of death and is an escalating public health concern in adolescents. The Ask Suicide-Screening Questions (ASQ) is a 4-question validated suicide screening questionnaire that identifies youth at risk for suicide. A 5th populates with a positive response to any of the questions. The emergency department (ED) is an ideal setting to perform suicide screening. However, a discrete and convenient way to disclose sensitive information in this fast-paced setting was needed. To address these issues, our team developed an electronic version of the ASQ. The purpose of this project was to determine if this …

The Resilience Of Female Survivors Of Intimate Partner Violence In Southwest Nigeria: An Interdisciplinary Analysis, Tobi F. Oloyede
Electronic Theses and Dissertations
Female survivors of intimate partner violence (IPV) in Nigeria endure harsh and traumatic experiences that affect their rights as women and their well-being. As the phenomenon of IPV persists in Nigeria, it is not only a family problem but a critical social and psychological problem. This study examined Nigerian female survivors’ hidden strength, agency, and resilience, rather than their powerlessness and vulnerability. Analysis of survey questionnaires, interviews, and secondary scholarship reveals that some Nigerian female survivors of IPV are able to cope whilst navigating stressful and traumatic experiences. The results also show that survivors’ ability to thrive and cope under …

Contemplative Pedagogy: A Grounded Theory Of The Integration Of Contemplative Practices And Perspectives Within Counselor Training, Clarissa B. Cigrand
Dissertations
While there is a growing evidence on the value of contemplative practice within counselor preparation (Christopher & Maris, 2010; Leppma & Young, 2016; McCollum & Gehart, 2010), research to date has focused on studying specific contemplative practices and their benefits to clients and CITs rather than guidelines of implementation. As a field, we are lacking information on how contemplative practice informs pedagogical strategies and approaches. Scant research exists on how contemplative practices and perspectives inform the roles of counselor educators, their way of being in the classroom, and how they situate contemplative practices and perspectives into student learning. This dissertation …
