Looking Through The Eyes Of Student Athletes, Rachel Bamford Apr 2020

Looking Through The Eyes Of Student Athletes, Rachel Bamford

Academic Festival

Collegiate athletics play a tremendous role in the average student’s life on campus, whether it be attending wild tailgates at homecoming games or playing recreationally with friends. The general community around the university can have differing perceptions of student athletes. Some people support student athletes and love the entertainment aspect of college athletics, and others think that sports in college are a waste of time, since most student athletes don’t go professional after college (Tucker 2016). For the elite student athletes themselves, college life becomes different and more intense. Student athletes must balance their academics, athletics, and social lives while …

Capitalism And New Age, Michael Araujo Apr 2020

Capitalism And New Age, Michael Araujo

Academic Festival

New Age spirituality is the religion of capitalism. It not only capitulates to capitalist narratives of radical individualism and the commodification of what is sacred to many other people but is spread and maintained by those narratives. From the beginning, New Age spirituality was rooted in the capitalist exploitation of colonized people and perpetuates a denigration of their religious beliefs. In the process, these religious beliefs are changed to make them fit Western capitalist values and sellable to a Western audience. This loose collection of spiritual beliefs is propped up by capitalism as a weak alternative to mainline Christianity in …

Determining The Feasibility Of An Online, Media Mediation Program For Parents To Improve Parent-Child Sexual Health Communication, Tracy M. Scull, Christina V. Malik, Elyse M. Keefe

Journal of Media Literacy Education

Media Aware Parent is an interactive, web-based program designed to equip parents to communicate with their adolescent child about sexual health and media by enhancing parental communication and media mediation skills, as well as provide them with medically-accurate sexual health knowledge. In a small feasibility study, 56 parents of 7th and 8th graders in the United States were randomly assigned to complete a prototype of Media Aware Parent or receive online resources about adolescent sexual health. Results indicated that after using the program, participants in the intervention group discussed more new sexual health topics with their child and also had …

Community Psychology's Impact On Public Health And The Experience Of Marginalization, Katie Hudick Apr 2020

Community Psychology's Impact On Public Health And The Experience Of Marginalization, Katie Hudick

Richard T. Schellhase Essay Prize in Ethics

Vulnerable and marginalized populations face a series of risks and dangers throughout their daily lives. This is not simply limited to explicit forms of discrimination and hatred, but systemic forms of oppression and discrimination which limit those not belonging to more privileged and affluent socioeconomic or sociocultural groups. Community psychology operates as a means of analyzing how environmental and social factors impact specific demographic groups within a larger population and by extension the experience of mental health specific to these groups (Townley, Brown, & Sylvestre, 2018). In the application of this field, it is critical to understand the dynamics of …

Impact Of Student Loan Debt On Low-Income Black Students, Arrion Rogers

Showcase of Undergraduate Research and Creative Endeavors (SOURCE)

African American students from low-income communities who are often plagued with generational poverty have limited options for paying for higher education. Student loans are often the only viable option for this population. These students are less likely to have access to external resources, which furthers their hardship. Loans are an essential tool as a means of receiving higher education. Ultimately, students are forced to choose between borrowing themselves into debt, delaying obtaining higher education, or dropping out due to the financial burden. The literature identifies the consequential effects of student loan debt on African American students On a larger scale, …

Social Work Students’ Knowledge And Attitudes Toward Autism, Hannah Buckner, Jenna Kutz Apr 2020

Social Work Students’ Knowledge And Attitudes Toward Autism, Hannah Buckner, Jenna Kutz

Showcase of Undergraduate Research and Creative Endeavors (SOURCE)

The number of children with autism is on the rise, which means that, increasingly, social workers must be prepared to practice with this population. In fact, it is reported that 75% of social workers work with clients who have developmental disabilities, including autism. The attitudes they hold toward people with autism will invariably shape their approaches and practice. Accordingly, social work students need to build an awareness of the needs and struggles that people with autism face in society, so that they can be equipped to serve them at all levels of social work practice. Despite the significance, little is …

Moral Distress: Unaddressed Challenges For The “Most Honest And Ethical Profession”, Kelly Straight

DNP Qualifying Manuscripts

Nurses and nurse practitioners (NPs) face greater responsibility to address the ethical challenges that present during the course of patient care, due to advances in medical technology and pharmaceutical innovation, and despite widening disparities within the U.S. healthcare system. These ethical questions, which arise during the course of routine patient care, are increasing in both number and complexity in nearly every patient care setting. Unresolved and/or ongoing ethical questions and conflicts encountered in patient care pose further issues such as the development of moral distress. The literature demonstrates that moral distress contributes to dissatisfaction, disengagement, and burnout which negatively affects …

Graduate Occupational Therapy Students: Communication And Research Preferences From Three University Libraries, Lisa A. Adriani, Daniel G. Kipnis, Ronda I. Kolbin, Daniel Verbit

Libraries Scholarship

Library liaisons from three universities distributed an anonymous survey to graduate occupational therapy students to gauge preferred methods of communication when conducting research. This article discusses three findings: whom the students prefer to turn to when seeking research assistance, which methods of communication students prefer, and how long students spend searching before asking for assistance. From 193 responses, the liaisons reasoned that students prefer consulting with their peers before seeking help from librarians or faculty or instructors and they prefer assistance face-to-face. Additionally, the majority are willing to research from 30 minutes to 1 hour before seeking research help.

Global Injury Morbidity And Mortality From 1990 To 2017: Results From The Global Burden Of Disease Study 2017, Spencer L. James, Veincent Christian F. Pepito, Global Burden Of Disease Collaborators, 595 Co-Authors

Ateneo School of Medicine and Public Health Publications

Background
Past research in population health trends has shown that injuries form a substantial burden of population health loss. Regular updates to injury burden assessments are critical. We report Global Burden of Disease (GBD) 2017 Study estimates on morbidity and mortality for all injuries.

Methods
We reviewed results for injuries from the GBD 2017 study. GBD 2017 measured injury-specific mortality and years of life lost (YLLs) using the Cause of Death Ensemble model. To measure non-fatal injuries, GBD 2017 modelled injury-specific incidence and converted this to prevalence and years lived with disability (YLDs). YLLs and YLDs were summed to calculate …

Hmong Women In Leadership: Creating A Multicultural Identity While Preserving Traditions In The Modern Age, Perrin Thompson

Celebrating Scholarship and Creativity Day (2018-)

The life of a Hmong woman in America is dedicated to trying to find the perfect balance between professional achievements and cultural and familial expectations. This proves extremely challenging as there are occasions when professional and personal demands are in absolute contrast. This situation is even more prevalent in the life of a Hmong woman who endeavors to become a leader in society. The purpose of this phenomenological culture case study, whose data will be based upon a nine-month research project, is to examine how recognized Hmong women leaders have overcome the differences in value systems and have balanced the …

Occupational Therapy's Role In Adapting Residential Youth Camps For Increased Inclusion, Brittany Tate Apr 2020

Occupational Therapy's Role In Adapting Residential Youth Camps For Increased Inclusion, Brittany Tate

Student Capstone Papers

Each year, summer camps serve more than 11 million youth in the United States (US) (Wilson, Sibthorp, & Brusseau, 2017). Summer camps provide children with new experiences and give them opportunities to build confidence, social skills, and peer relationships (Wilson et al., 2017). Occupational therapy (OT) is an emerging area of practice throughout summer camps in the US (Hanscom & Schoen, 2014). Hanscom and Schoen (2014) recommend strategically combining OT with traditional camp programming to create an emotionally, physically, and spiritually safe environment that promotes optimal attending and task follow through. Summer camp has been shown to enhance positive youth …

The Relationship Between Campus Climate, Sexual Assault Victimization, And Reporting Sexual Assault To Campus Officials For Lgbtq College Students, Sarah Nightingale Apr 2020

The Relationship Between Campus Climate, Sexual Assault Victimization, And Reporting Sexual Assault To Campus Officials For Lgbtq College Students, Sarah Nightingale

Doctoral Dissertations

Sexual assault is a persistent problem on college colleges and has been found to impact the health, well-being, and academic success of survivors. Lesbian, gay, bisexual, transgender, and queer/questioning (LGBTQ) college students experience sexual assault victimization at disproportionately higher rates compared to their cisgender, heterosexual peers. Federal Title IX legislation in the United States (U.S) requires higher education institutions to have systems in place to respond to reports of sexual assault and support the students affected. However, few students report sexual assault to college officials. This dissertation seeks to contribute to the understanding of campus sexual assault by exploring relationships …

Mediation In Education For Foster Care, Anelise Powers Apr 2020

Mediation In Education For Foster Care, Anelise Powers

Pepperdine Dispute Resolution Law Journal

There are well over 400,000 children in foster care. Education can improve the well-being of foster children in critical development stages of life and support their economic success in adulthood. In recent years, the law has given greater priority to the education of foster children, and foster children are often eligible for additional services. However, a common trend in foster care research is that foster children, though eligible, do not always receive the services created to assist them. This paper will explore how improving mediation related to education and foster care can help maximize the impact of efforts to improve …

Korean Adoptees As Parents: Intergenerationality Of Ethnic, Racial, And Adoption Socialization, Xiang Zhou, Jaeran Kim, Heewon Lee, Richard M. Lee

Department of Educational Studies Faculty Publications

Objective: Using a socialization framework, this study aimed to understand the intergenerational patterns of ethnic, racial, and adoption socialization practices. Background: Understanding the impact of ethnicity, race, and adoption is a lifelong process for transracially, transnationally adopted individuals. Few studies, however, have explored how adult adoptees socialize their children on ethnicity, race, and adoption and to what extent this socialization is informed by their own transracial, transnational adoption experiences.

Method: On the basis of 51 interviews, we investigated adopted Korean Americans’ reappraisal of their ethnic, racial, and adoption socialization experiences growing up transracially and transnationally, as well as their current …

The Impact Of Social Influences On Msum Students' Decision To Go To College, Jenna Ellertson Apr 2020

The Impact Of Social Influences On Msum Students' Decision To Go To College, Jenna Ellertson

Student Academic Conference

With a cultural image that portrays a “college for all” mantra, there are a variety of measures that may be impactful on one’s decision to go to college. This paper focuses on Minnesota State University Moorhead students’ narratives around social influences and pressure to continue their education through the means of a four-year degree. It was found that areas of social impact were based on the influences of family, friends, media, and the American dream in relation to one’s self-identity and future aspirations. In terms of individual decisions towards college, major choice and university location were almost exclusively made independently.

What is job embeddedness?

Job embeddedness refers to the extent to which employees are connected to their jobs through a social web. Sociology, Social Work and Anthropology Faculty Publications

As a response to Hurricane Mitch and the resulting widespread loss of life and destruction of Honduran infrastructure in 1998, the United States Geological Survey (USGS) conducted the first wide-area airborne lidar topographic mapping project in Central America. The survey was executed by the Bureau of Economic Geology at the University of Texas at Austin (BEG) in 2000, and it was intended to cover 240 square kilometers distributed among 15 flood-prone communities throughout Honduras. The original data processing produced basic digital elevation models at 1.5-meter grid spacing which were used as inputs for hydrological modeling. The USGS published the results …
