Producing The Qualified: Resource Allocation For Lead Abatement In San Antonio, Benjamin C. Gonzalez
Producing The Qualified: Resource Allocation For Lead Abatement In San Antonio, Benjamin C. Gonzalez
Sociology and Anthropology Honors Theses
Although the use of lead-based paint in residential buildings was banned in 1978, many aging buildings still contain hazardous lead content. Government systems have begun treating this environmental hazard as an issue of public health, organizing intervention according to measurable health indicators such as the blood lead level (BLL). As a result, public health norms organize and dictate who receives state assistance in removing lead from their home, constructing a specific demographic of “qualified” recipients of aid. Using qualitative interviews with residents and city officials, this thesis will analyze a local lead abatement program in San Antonio, Texas in order …

A Meta-Analysis On The Effectiveness Of Trauma-Informed Practice, Lesley Barajas, Gabriela Martinez
A Meta-Analysis On The Effectiveness Of Trauma-Informed Practice, Lesley Barajas, Gabriela Martinez
Symposium on Research and Creative Expression (SORCE)
This study looked at past research on trauma informed practice to analyze its effectiveness.. There is sufficient research portraying the helpfulness of the trauma-informed approach; however, there is little research on whether it is effective as a theoretical intervention. The study looked at how different trauma-informed interventions have helped in diminishing the effect of trauma on different populations. The populations considered in the analysis include: women that have experienced domestic violence, children, individuals with Post-Traumatic Stress Disorder (PTSD), and youth that reside in neighborhoods with high levels of crime. Since trauma-informed care is currently considered a broad theoretical framework for …

Mitigating The Impact Of The Covid-19 Outbreak: A Review Of International Measures To Support Community-Based Care, Walter D. Dawson, Elizabeth C. Ashcroft, Klara Lorenz-Dant, Adelina Comas-Herrera
Institute on Aging Publications
Key findings
- Community-based care faces unique challenges during the COVID-19 pandemic compared to other parts of the long-term care continuum.
- Several countries have taken steps to prevent the spread of COVID-19 infections in community-based care including the closure of adult day centres and other service providers.
- Continuity of care is of upmost importance. A disruption of care and support could have serious negative impacts on individual health and well-being due to increased risk of loneliness and social isolation.
- The dispersed nature of community based care suggests that direct governmental action and oversight may be more difficult to provide than for …
Effects Of Representation In Media On Race Perceptions, Madison Morehead, Jessica Andrade
Effects Of Representation In Media On Race Perceptions, Madison Morehead, Jessica Andrade
Symposium on Research and Creative Expression (SORCE)
This study examined the impact that television platforms have on perpetuating the stereotypes assigned to minority groups by majority groups, specifically among young adult populations. Previous studies have focused on the impact of misrepresentation in the media on individuals that identify with minority groups. However, this study assessed the impact of television platforms on minority groups’ internalized perceptions of self. It also assessed the impact of television platforms on majority groups’ implicit bias based on the quality and quantity of representation consumed. We hypothesized that the more exposure people have to positive representation, the less implicit biases they will have …

Evaluation Of The Reach Program In Juvenile Detention, Samantha Burgett, Eseosasere Okundaye, Abby Koselke
Symposium on Research and Creative Expression (SORCE)
Although mentorship programs have been determined to be effective in promoting positive outcomes in youth and in decreasing delinquency, there is a significant gap in the literature in terms of implementation and evaluation of mentoring programs within juvenile detention facilities. The aim of our study is to evaluate the effectiveness of the REACH program, a violence prevention and delinquency intervention curriculum which the researchers implemented from September through December 2019 within the Porter County Juvenile Detention Center. The REACH curriculum is centered around four key program components: 1) Self-esteem enhancement, 2) Decision-making skills, 3) Setting post-release goals, and 4) Sense …

Social Media And Its Effects On Mental Health Of High School Students, Emma Brandy, Nancy Engel, Kimberly Mullins
Symposium on Research and Creative Expression (SORCE)
Previous studies have established a link between mental health and social media usage. That research has shown that social media usage in students can be detrimental to their self-esteem, motivation, and generalized anxiety. This study focused on the effects of social media usage on high school students. The hypothesis was that high social media usage would be associated with student mental health. This study included surveying high school students in the Northwest Indiana area. These surveys asked questions regarding how often the students used social media, what they used it for, and what their perceived stress and anxiety levels were …

Symposium on Research and Creative Expression (SORCE)
Bullying In America has been a prominent topic for the last decade. The effects are damaging and ongoing. School-aged children are affected from early elementary age through the college years with ensuing after-effects. Bullying can impede learning, social growth, and safety to the youth being bullied as well as the ones doing the bullying. (stopbullying.gov 2018) This presentation focuses on the confidence levels, knowledge, and actions of middle school-aged students in their preparedness to combat bullying in the classroom. This research explores the relationship between student knowledge of bullying and procedures to address bullying and the self-reported likelihood of reporting …

Gender Journeys : Arts-Based Participatory Action Research With Non-Binary Young Adults, Darren Thomas Cosgrove
Legacy Theses & Dissertations (2009 - 2024)
Increasing attention to the social and health disparities faced by lesbian, gay, bisexual, transgender, and queer (LGBTQ) people has ushered in much needed attention to issues related to sexuality and gender diversity within social work literature. Among this burgeoning focus has been a particular emphasis on the experiences of transgender people. Such work is particularly relevant to social workers given the heightened rates of harassment and discrimination that transgender people face. Increased scholarly attention presents opportunities for new knowledge to inform social work policy and practice in service to transgender communities. While this expansion in literature addresses several significant needs, …

Family Annihilators: The Psychological Profiles Of Murderous Fathers, Taylor Oathout
Criminal Justice
Yardley, Wilson, and Lynes (2014), in their study of British family annihilators between 1980 and 2012, established four profiles of familicide offenders: self-righteous, disappointed, anomic, and paranoid. This paper located 39 cases of familicide within the United States between 2009 and 2019 using LexisNexis. Familicide is defined as a domestic crime where a father murders at least one of his biological children and the children’s mother. Cases were categorized by analyzing the relationship between the offenders’ primary motives and features of the crime and offender. Primary motives were family breakdown, appearance, financial distress, mental illness, and protection. Features included domestic …

Factors Influencing Participation In Liberal Student Organizations On College Campuses, Nathan Johnson
Factors Influencing Participation In Liberal Student Organizations On College Campuses, Nathan Johnson
Theses/Capstones/Creative Projects
Despite a long history of student organizations on college campuses there is relatively little research on participation and student experiences in such groups, especially on what factors motivate students to become involved. This study sought to examine factors that influence participation in political organizations on college campuses through dependent variables of attendance and holding a leadership role. The sample focused on groups understood to be “liberal” such as the College Democrats, environmental groups, and others. Respondents were reached through personal connections, social media, and distributing the survey to student organizations. The examined factors accounted for less than a fifth of …

Evaluation Of A Jail Reentry Program., Bailey Elisabeth Holland
Electronic Theses and Dissertations
Previous research has focused on prison reentry programs and the impact the program has on reducing rates of recidivism, but there is a lack of research on jail reentry programs and the impact of programs’ individual services have on recidivism. Secondary data was obtained from the Louisville Metro Jail Familiar Faces Action and Community Transition (F2ACT) reentry program, which included basic demographic data of the participants, a record of individual services received by each participant, and the number of times each participant was booked into Louisville Metro Corrections before and after participating in F2ACT. A multinomial logistic regression found that …
Bullying Trends In The United States And An Analysis Of The Impact Of Prevention Programs On Bullying Subtypes And Gender, Reeve Kennedy
Bullying Trends In The United States And An Analysis Of The Impact Of Prevention Programs On Bullying Subtypes And Gender, Reeve Kennedy
Doctoral Dissertations
This three-article dissertation presents three standalone articles that address bullying trends over time within the United States (US), gaps in bullying prevention program outcomes (both within the US and internationally), and the role of study and methodological features on the findings. The first article used meta-regression to establish trends in different types of bullying involvement from 1998 to 2017, identified factors that help explain variation in bullying trends, and determined differences in those trends by gender and grade. The second article used meta-analysis to examine the effectiveness of bullying prevention programs on three subtypes of traditional bullying victimization: physical, relational, …

“Speaking Of Dignity”: Interviews With Non-Unionized Adjunct Faculty Teaching In An English Department At A Catholic Church-Affiliated University, Jacob Aaron Bennett
Doctoral Dissertations
This study considers the phenomenon of “dignity” as experienced by non-unionized, part-time, English Department faculty at a Catholic Church-affiliated campus in the Northeast region of the United States; I refer to the institution as Urban Catholic University. This focus is motivated by the apparent tension between Catholic social traditions regarding labor rights and worker dignity, on the one hand, and working conditions for adjuncts as described in the literature on higher education faculty employment. To wit, the labor-positive and union-affirmative tradition in Catholic Social Teaching (CST) has been unequivocally supportive of the rights of workers to unionize since the 1890s, …
Assessing Conduct Disturbance And Fly Ash Exposure In Children., Jillian G. Winn
Assessing Conduct Disturbance And Fly Ash Exposure In Children., Jillian G. Winn
College of Arts & Sciences Senior Theses
Minimal research has been conducted on fly ash (a byproduct of coal combustion) and health outcomes among exposed communities, and even less has looked at its effect on children’s behavior. This study specifically looks at fly ash exposure and conduct disturbance, using logistic regression to characterize their relationship. Conduct disturbance was gauged by t-scores of 55 or higher on the dimensions of aggression and delinquency of the Child Behavior Checklist. Fly ash exposure was determined by air and surface sampling of the children’s homes. While the odds ratios suggested fly ash exposure increases the likelihood of conduct disturbance, the results …
Understanding Factors That Impact Health Behaviors And Access To Healthcare Among Youth Experiencing Homelessness, Kathryn Rosales Gallardo
Understanding Factors That Impact Health Behaviors And Access To Healthcare Among Youth Experiencing Homelessness, Kathryn Rosales Gallardo
Dissertations and Theses (Open Access)
Youth experiencing homelessness (YEH) have a high risk of adverse health outcomes and their utilization of healthcare services is low. This dissertation aims to further understand factors that impact YEH’s health behaviors and access to healthcare services. This dissertation is in the form of three manuscripts that each contribute to the overall aim. In manuscript 1, we examined the rates and correlates of human papillomavirus (HPV) vaccination initiation and completion among a sample of YEH in seven U.S. cities using logistic regression models. We found that HPV vaccination completion is low among male (19%) and female (37%) YEH. Among male …

Hurricane Harvey brought 33 trillion gallons of rainfall to Texas and Louisiana and damaged more than 100,000 homes in August 2017. Social workers worked during and after the storm to provide services to those affected. The primary research question guiding this dissertation was: What were social workers’ experiences as they were involved in relief efforts during and immediately after Hurricane Harvey? The study group comprised 39 participants (35 female, 4 male); of these, 19 were masters-level social workers who volunteered at shelters in Houston following Hurricane Harvey, 14 were masters-level social workers who worked at a pediatric children’s hospital on …
Measuring Cultural Humility Of Community Health Workers, Nayeema Ahmed
Measuring Cultural Humility Of Community Health Workers, Nayeema Ahmed
Dissertations and Theses (Open Access)
This study examined cultural humility of community health workers (CHWs) in ambulatory clinical settings. Cultural humility has been defined as an attitude, or process that incorporates openness, power-balance, and critical self-reflection when interacting with people of cultural differences. It differs from the more well-known concept of cultural competence in that cultural humility is not culture specific and reflects provider attitudes and an orientation towards recognizing differences rather than specific knowledge about another culture. As such, cultural humility may lend itself to improving the care process across diverse patient populations. The literature on cultural humility and its relationship with CHWs is …

Learning To Leave: Filipino Families And The Making Of The Global Filipino Nurse, Yasmin Y. Ortiga
Research Collection School of Social Sciences
This chapter investigates how this process of reconfiguring the “social” plays out in the context of the Philippines’ labor export system and pervasive culture of emigration. Focusing on the case of Filipino nursing graduates seeking to work overseas, this chapter discusses how the success of the Philippines’ labor-brokering process relies on individuals who can take on the responsibility of transforming themselves, mainly through education and training, into desirable workers for future employers. While the migration literature had largely framed emigration as an individual aspiration and project, this chapter demonstrates how families subsidize the Philippine state’s labor export system by taking …

Approach And Avoidance Coping Humor Motives And Their Relation To Trauma Exposure And Physical Health, Andrea D. Dorbu
Theses and Dissertations
The present study investigated approach-avoidance motives for humor use and their association with physical health symptoms linked to childhood trauma exposure and adult relationship trauma exposure among military-affiliated people and civilians (N=100). Results indicated that approach-avoidance motives for humor use were not associated with study variables. However, adult relationship trauma exposure had a significant positive association with physical health symptoms among both groups. In addition, childhood trauma exposure was significantly positively associated with adult relationship trauma exposure.

Theses and Dissertations
In this study, I tested the perceived attitudes of students towards Corporate Ethics and Social Responsibility (CESR). I assessed whether students within a particular major are more or less likely to exhibit ethical reasoning compared to students within other majors. Specifically, I tested the perceived differences in stakeholder and stockholder views among accounting, business, and non-business students. I conducted the study utilizing the Perceived Role of Ethics and Social Responsibility Scale (PRESOR) while controlling for gender, age, work experience, and degree of religiosity. Results show that accounting students generally have a higher perception of stakeholder views and a lower perception …
