Using The Post-Traumatic Growth Model To Explore Trauma Narratives In Group Work With African Refugee Youth, Hannah E. Acquaye, Carol M. John, Laurie A. Bloomquist, Nicole M. Milne

Faculty Publications - Graduate School of Counseling

African American youth and African refugee youth encounter systemic racism in similar yet different ways. Because of the inherent traumatic experiences encountered by refugee youth, the added discrimination during their acculturation processes elevates their trauma and stressor- related symptoms. This paper uses the Posttraumatic Growth Model to explore some steps in facilitating an 8-week group therapy for African refugee youth in the US school system. Culturally-sensitive recommendations are also provided.

Diversity Training, Megan Paul Jul 2020

Diversity Training, Megan Paul

Umbrella Summaries

What is diversity training?

Diversity training refers to a “distinct set of instructional programs aimed at facilitating positive intergroup interactions, reducing prejudice and discrimination, and enhancing the skills, knowledge, and motivation of participants to interact with diverse others” (Bezrukova, Spell, Perry, & Jehn, 2016, p. 1,228). In the absence of a standard approach, there has been significant variation in the design and context of diversity training.

The following characteristics have been identified as differing across trainings reported in the research literature (Bezrukova et al., 2016):

► Content Focus: Group-specific training focuses on learning about one or more specific groups (e.g., …

Open Research Projects And Public Sociology: Students Communicating Creatively In The Classroom And Beyond, Daniel J. Rose, William V. Taylor Jul 2020

Open Research Projects And Public Sociology: Students Communicating Creatively In The Classroom And Beyond, Daniel J. Rose, William V. Taylor

The Journal of Public and Professional Sociology

As teachers, we often deny students the freedom to choose topics of inquiry and methods of communication. We have developed an open research project that challenges students to identify a social problem, gather research, and apply what they have learned by targeting an audience and developing a strategy for effective communication. This assignment centers a “problem-posing” focus that tasks students with confronting relevant issues in their lives and communities. It emphasizes public sociology by shifting the audience for their projects from instructors to classmates, families, communities, and beyond. Students have communicated their work through a variety of mediums, including children’s …

Implementation Of A Safety Planning Intervention On An Inpatient Psychiatric Unit., Kevin Luke Houser Jul 2020

Implementation Of A Safety Planning Intervention On An Inpatient Psychiatric Unit., Kevin Luke Houser

Doctor of Nursing Practice Papers

Background: In 2017, suicide was the 10th leading cause of death in the United States. There are multiple interventions used for individuals at risk for suicide. No-suicide contracts are commonly used by clinicians who treat individuals at high risk for suicide, but there is no evidence supporting this intervention in preventing suicides. A safety planning intervention has been shown to decrease the risk of suicide in individuals at high risk for suicide by helping individuals recognize warning signs of a suicidal crisis, use their internal coping strategies, and contact social network or community resources to assist in reducing suicidal thoughts. …

Academic Library Support Of Social Entrepreneurship Programs, Anthony L. Paganelli Jul 2020

Academic Library Support Of Social Entrepreneurship Programs, Anthony L. Paganelli

Dissertations

The concept of social entrepreneurship was introduced into higher education in the late 1980s. Since then, social entrepreneurship programs have increased at higher educational institutions nationally and globally. This study examines how academic libraries support the growing trend of social entrepreneurship programs and the perceptions of academic library administrators and faculty librarians toward social entrepreneurship programs. Based on the review of literature, little information exists regarding the academic library support of social entrepreneurship programs. This study involved a survey instrument distributed to academic library administrators and faculty librarians from social entrepreneurship program institutions and a follow-up interview. The analysis provided …

The Future Of Research Is Indigenous: Culturally Grounding Our Indigenous Scholarship, Jessica Hernandez, Michael S. Spencer Jul 2020

The Future Of Research Is Indigenous: Culturally Grounding Our Indigenous Scholarship, Jessica Hernandez, Michael S. Spencer

Human Biology Open Access Pre-Prints

Indigenous peoples are the original stewards of their Native and Ancestral lands—having maintained the balances of their ecosystems since time immemorial. However, as a result of colonization, imperialism, and the mass genocide against Indigenous peoples, environmental systems have been altered and drastically changed. Since western ideologies such as capitalism and western science were introduced, Indigenous stewardships and their knowledge systems have been invalidated and oftentimes, ignored in the environmental and ecological discourse. Their complex nature-culture nexus has been dismissed and suppressed and European men have been given the credit for their discoveries and nuances in the environmental and ecological discourse …

Elementary Teachers' Self Perceptions Of Professional Quality Of Life, Kelly Gomez Jul 2020

Elementary Teachers' Self Perceptions Of Professional Quality Of Life, Kelly Gomez

Educational Leadership Theses, Dissertations, and Student Creative Activity

An effective teacher is the greatest influence on student achievement. Therefore, it is essential for school districts to ensure there is an effective teacher in every classroom. Yet, the responsibilities of a teacher are countless and continually changing, leaving teachers at risk for becoming overworked and worn out. Teachers experiencing high levels of professional quality of life, comprised of compassion satisfaction, burnout, and secondary traumatic stress, are better able to provide positive learning experiences and more likely to be retained in the teacher profession. Therefore, it is sensible and necessary for school districts to understand how to support and retain …

Independent Children's Rights Institutions As Facilitators Of Dialogue Between Children And The State: An Opportunity For Mutual Empowerment?, Sara Imanian Phd, Nigel Patrick Thomas Phd

Societies Without Borders

The role of independent children’s rights institutions is a multifaceted one, which can lead them to be pulled in many different directions. For most such institutions the Convention on the Rights of the Child (CRC) provides a fundamental underpinning for their work, and many institutions place particular emphasis on Article 12 and on children’s rights to participation more generally. At the same time a principal focus of activity is on influencing law and policy in their national jurisdictions. In this paper we explore some ways in which these separate objectives can be combined in ways that challenge, or at least …

Institution Of Dowry In India: A Theoretical Inquiry, Suparna Soni Phd Jul 2020

Institution Of Dowry In India: A Theoretical Inquiry, Suparna Soni Phd

Societies Without Borders

Originally conceived as a voluntary marriage gift, dowry has developed into an obligatory payment by the bride’s family to the groom’s family. Moreover, the institution of dowry has persisted even in the face of legal prohibition. Though women substantially contribute to the economic wellbeing of a family, the legitimization of dowry typically reflects the cultural bias of the marriage market, in which a woman’s value is either discounted or taken for granted. Ironically, existing studies also tend to implicitly accept this prevailing cultural bias of the marriage market. The existing literature can be categorized into two groups. While some studies …

Analyzing Political Marketing In Indonesia: A Palm Oil Digital Campaign Case Study, Fajrina Khairiza, Bevaola Kusumasari

Forest and Society

Social media in political marketing is an emerging area of research. This study explains how social networks are constructed in a digital campaign, identifying key actors, and messages involved in modern political marketing. A hotly contested palm oil campaign in Indonesia serves as a case study to analyze and visualize the messaging content found in digital campaigns. Social Network Analysis (SNA) was used to map the social network sites in Twitter and to track social interaction patterns in the #SawitBaik campaign. The results confirmed that state institutions, non-governmental institutions, news media, and individuals were key actors in the digital campaign. …

Toward Standard Interpreter Education Program Admission Criteria, Marc Holmes Jul 2020

Toward Standard Interpreter Education Program Admission Criteria, Marc Holmes

International Journal of Interpreter Education

In the United States, signed language interpreter education programs (IEPs) must strike a balance between attracting a sufficient number of students and admitting only high-quality applicants who possess foundational language skills, can graduate in a timely manner and acquire professional credentials expediently. The Commission on Collegiate Interpreter Education (2014) asserts that all students entering U.S. IEPs should have strong language skills in both American Sign Language(ASL)and English before beginning to acquire interpreting skills. One way to measure a student’s readiness to enter a program of instruction is through the use of admission criteria. I examined online documents and surveyed52 baccalaureate-granting IEPs in …

The Importance Of Trauma-Informed Practices In Schools, Heather French Jul 2020

The Importance Of Trauma-Informed Practices In Schools, Heather French

Master's Theses & Capstone Projects

Students who have been exposed to trauma may face social/emotional, behavioral, or cognitive developmental delays, poor health, problems in school, and mental health issues. These effects may last into adulthood. The intent of a trauma-informed school approach is to break the cycle of trauma by identifying trauma in students, providing support and interventions to help students cope and heal, and helping prevent future trauma. In order to meet these standards, schools need to collaborate with families and mental health professionals. Teachers need the proper training in trauma recognition to be able to provide an environment for all students to feel …

Life-History Factors Influence Teenagers’ Suicidal Ideation: A Model Selection Analysis Of The Canadian National Longitudinal Survey Of Children And Youth, John P. Ziker, Kristin Snopkowski

Anthropology Faculty Publications and Presentations

Suicidality is an important contributor to disease burden worldwide. We examine the developmental and environmental correlates of reported suicidal ideation at age 15 and develop a new evolutionary model of suicidality based on life history trade-offs and hypothesized accompanying modulations of cognition. Data were derived from the National Longitudinal Survey of Children and Youth (Statistics Canada) which collected information on children’s social, emotional, and behavioral development in eight cycles between 1994 and 2009. We take a model selection approach to understand thoughts of suicide at age 15 (N ≈ 1,700). The most highly ranked models include social support, early …

Sentiment Analysis Over Collaborative Relationships In Open Source Software Projects, Lingjia Li, Jian Cao, David Lo

Research Collection School Of Computing and Information Systems

Sentiments and collaboration efficiency are key factors in the success of the open source software (OSS) development process. However, in the software engineering domain, no studies have been conducted to analyze the effect between collaborators' sentiments, and the role of sentiment in collaborative relationships during the development process. In this study, we apply sentiment analysis and statistical analysis on collaboration artifacts over five projects on GitHub. We use sentiment consistency to quantify the relation between sentiments in collaborative relationships. It is found that sentiment consistency is positively correlated with the closeness of collaborative relationships and collaborators' overall sentiment states. We …

Fostering Equitable Opportunities For All Students Through Transfer Of Equity Knowledge, Corinne Brion Jul 2020

Fostering Equitable Opportunities For All Students Through Transfer Of Equity Knowledge, Corinne Brion

Educational Leadership Faculty Publications

To date, there has been little research conducted among school leaders on how new equity knowledge gets transferred to schools. The purpose of this qualitative study is to explore the extent to which educational leaders attending a year-long equity program are able to transfer the newly acquired knowledge to their professional lives. Findings reveal that leaders were able to use new equity knowledge in their personal and professional lives. Further analysis identifies enhancers and inhibitors to the transfer of such equity knowledge. The researcher provides policy recommendations related to facilitating and sustaining the transfer of equity knowledge among school leaders.
