An Exploration Of Interventions For Healing Intergeneration Trauma To Develop Successful Healing Programs For Aboriginal Australians: A Literature Review, Alison J. Simpson, William Abur, James A. Charles
Australian Indigenous HealthBulletin
Introduction
Health outcomes and life expectancy of Indigenous people throughout the world are far poorer than non-Indigenous populations. Emerging evidence from research shows that many social issues which impact on Indigenous peoples globally is linked to trauma over generations. This review explores literature about Indigenous people from around the world to seek interventions which have been successful in healing intergenerational trauma.
Method
To identify interventions that have been successful in healing intergenerational trauma amongst Indigenous populations globally, a systematic search strategy was conducted using keywords and synonyms related to the topic. Peer reviewed academic literature was sourced from four …

A Formative Evaluation Of The Family Strengthening Program In The Treasure Valley, Seung Youn Chyung Edd, Megan Miller Ms, Jennifer A. Shamsy Ms, Jaime Hansen Mpa, Sarah Leeds Mph
Journal of Family Strengths
Family Advocates, a nonprofit organization serving families in the Treasure Valley in Idaho, offers the Family Strengthening Program. This is a 20-week program providing weekly meetings for families who need to develop strong family cohesion, resilience, and parenting skills to maintain healthy families. The program uses the Strengthening Families’ approach with an emphasis on the protective factors framework and provides incentives to participants for participation. A third-party evaluation team from a local university conducted a formative evaluation of the program to help improve its quality. The evaluation team used both goal-based and goal-free, needs-based evaluation approaches, and analyzed quantitative and …
Strengths-Based Group Supervision: Restoring Child And Adolescent-Centered Social Work Team Meetings, Whitney Grube, Dr. Amy Mendenhall
Strengths-Based Group Supervision: Restoring Child And Adolescent-Centered Social Work Team Meetings, Whitney Grube, Dr. Amy Mendenhall
Journal of Family Strengths
Child mental health social workers are inundated on a daily basis with complex family dynamics. Burn-out and cynicism towards change become frequent. Strengths-based group supervision is a client-based alternative to the “team meeting as usual” approach and combats some of the challenges workers often experience. Strengths-based group supervision is based on The Strengths Model, a case management model with four distinct components. The Model has been implemented in adult mental health settings and recently has been adapted for work with youth with mental illness. This paper describes strengths-based group supervision and discusses it’s applicability to different child serving systems.

You Are Academia, Jason Faust
Master of Arts in Professional Writing Capstones
Jason Faust’s You Are Academia presents the modern landscape of academia as a passive system of exponential growth. The core gameplay mechanic suggests that the fundamental purpose of current higher learning structures is meant to improve revenue and the quantity of works produced—not necessarily the quality of student education. This is a work of overt satire and takes roughly 20 minutes to complete.

Technology Of Story: Documenting Culturally Sustaining Anti-Racist Teaching, Frances Vitali
Technology Of Story: Documenting Culturally Sustaining Anti-Racist Teaching, Frances Vitali
Proceedings from the Document Academy
Our education system, an extension of our society, has created a monster of historical sociocultural and linguistic inequities, traumas, structural racism, and oppressions. Culturally responsive and sustaining pedagogy honor students’ funds of knowledge as their authentic power and voice. The oral family stories became vehicles to navigate and facilitate educational partnerships in becoming more culturally responsive for these teacher candidates. Oral stories, as documents, became the content within the context of the writing workshop process. These documented stories became the technological bridge that supported students’ home experiences with academic language and content to meet curricular goals.
During the writing process, …

Covid-19 Educational Inequities: Shining A Light On Disparities In A Graduate School Of Social Work, Jason Jabbari, Dan Ferris, Tyler Frank, Michal Grinstein-Weiss
Social Policy Institute Research
In the wake of COVID-19, universities and schools of social work face unprecedented challenges and uncertainty in aligning their academic models with public heath protocols and best practices, while prioritizing the safety and well-being of their students. In order to best respond to these challenges and uncertainty, more research is needed to advance a greater understanding of (1) what challenges students face, (2) who is most at risk and impacted by these challenges, and (3) how universities can best support students. Through a survey administered during the spring 2020 semester at a large research university in the Midwest, we explored …

Between The Visceral And The Lie : Lessons On Teaching Violence, Brian Gibbs
Intersections: Critical Issues in Education
Drawing from two qualitative case studies, one researching how teachers teach about war to the children of soldiers and the other examining how teachers teach lynching near historic lynching sites, this critical phenomenological study weighs how much horror and how much hope should be taught if the aim of the instruction is a liberating education. The author argues that a balance of both is necessary. Students cannot be left in the hopelessness of knowledge alone but must be taught how to engage their world with the possibility of making change.

Considering Educators’ Perceptions Of Ethics And Safety In Virtual Learning Environments (Vles), Patricia B. Steele, Cheryl Burleigh, Elizabeth A. Young
Journal of Educational Research and Practice
With the proliferation of students’ abilities to use technology, in particular virtual reality (VR) applications, teachers are experimenting with VR in virtual learning environments (VLE) to engage students; but clear ethics and safety guidelines are not available. Within the field of education additional research is needed to determine how VR is employed in VLEs. Additionally, what are the decision-making processes of educators for the VR programs chosen for classroom use based on ethics and student safety? Through qualitative inquiry, educators from K–12 and higher education shared their perceptions of ethics and safety concerns in VR applications for use in the …

Associations Between Living Alone, Depression, And Falls Among Community-Dwelling Older Adults In The Us, Debasree Das Gupta, Uma Kelekar, Dominique Rice
Kinesiology and Health Science Faculty Publications
Social isolation is closely linked to depression and falls in late life and are common among seniors. Although the literature has highlighted age-related variations in these three geriatric conditions, evidence on heterogeneities across older adult age categories is lacking. To address this gap, we present cross-sectional analyses using indicators of social isolation, depression, and falls of older adults constructed from the most recent Behavioral Risk Factor Surveillance System (BRFSS) data. An age-based understanding is critical to improve health interventions since health changes occur at a faster rate among seniors than in any other population subgroup. We included all adults 60 …

Student Scholar Symposium Abstracts and Posters
Upwards of 6 million children in the United States are afflicted with pediatric asthma. While previous research has linked asthma to multiple contributing biological and environmental factors, recent research suggests that psychological and social factors may have an impact on physiological outcomes of asthma like lung function and lung inflammation. Therefore, we suggest the need to study the impact of positive psychological factors such as a well-functioning family environment and beneficial social support on symptoms and lung function of children diagnosed with asthma. In the present pilot study, we recruited a total of 15 children with a confirmed asthma diagnosis …
Understanding The Unconscious Bias Of Gender In Boñar, Spain, Alicia Cabral
Understanding The Unconscious Bias Of Gender In Boñar, Spain, Alicia Cabral
Culture, Society, and Praxis
Within the province of Leon, Spain is a town named Boñar, which is known for its rich culture connected to the mining industry. In the summer of 2019, I conducted field research to discover the role women played during the mining industry within this town. While in the field looking for women that fit my criteria, I came across many locals who would direct me toward men for my interviews instead of the women I am in search of. This essay explores the idea that the townspeople of Boñar have been socialized to send questions about mining to the men …
