Breast Cancer Knowledge Among University Students ★, Shimia Hunter, Calvin Odhiambo
University of South Carolina Upstate Student Research Journal
Breast cancer is the most common cancer among women worldwide and the second-leading cause of death among women in the United States. While lack of knowledge about breast cancer is a key factor in breast cancer mortality, little is known about breast cancer knowledge among women under the age of 30. The goal of the current study was to investigate the knowledge and awareness of breast cancer among undergraduate students in the United States. This was a cross-sectional survey of 265 male and female undergraduate students at the University of South Carolina Upstate. Logistic regression analysis was conducted to predict …
A Descriptive Study Of Practitioners’ Use Of Yoga With Adolescents Who Have Experienced Trauma, Madeline Nance
A Descriptive Study Of Practitioners’ Use Of Yoga With Adolescents Who Have Experienced Trauma, Madeline Nance
All Theses
Experiencing a traumatic event(s) during adolescence may lead to various short- and/or long-term effects on the adolescent’s emotional, physical, social, cognitive, and/or spiritual health. The impacts of trauma may be addressed through treatment, but many common trauma treatments fail to address all five health domains. As a holistic practice, yoga may be a beneficial treatment for adolescents who have experienced trauma. While research has identified positive impacts of yoga on all five health domains, there are many inconsistencies in the literature regarding the use of yoga with adolescents who have experienced trauma. Using a descriptive quantitative research design, the purpose …
School Psychologists And School Counselors’ Perceptions Of Preparation Received For The Provision Of School-Based Mental Health Services, Sherika Mckenzie
School Psychologists And School Counselors’ Perceptions Of Preparation Received For The Provision Of School-Based Mental Health Services, Sherika Mckenzie
Education (PhD) Dissertations
School psychologists and school counselors are increasingly playing an essential role in the provision of school-based mental health services (SBMHS). This is especially true in California. Unfortunately, there are a few studies that have examined how California school psychologists and school counselors perceive their training to provide SBMHS, how they perceive their role in providing these services, and what they regard as their needs for professional development. The purpose of this study is to determine the extent to which California school psychologists and school counselors believe that their formal pre-service education and later in-service professional experiences have prepared them to …
Examining Health And Mental Health Disparities Between Sexual Minority Youth And Heterosexual Youth In The United States, Savarra K. Tadeo
Examining Health And Mental Health Disparities Between Sexual Minority Youth And Heterosexual Youth In The United States, Savarra K. Tadeo
Social Work Theses - Archive
Although various studies and systematic reviews have found an association between sexual orientation and health and mental health outcomes, few studies have examined a specific sample of adolescents aged 14 to 18 years of age that is generalizable to the entire United States population, while applying minority stress theory and general strain theory to a host of negative mental health outcomes and health risk behaviors in one study. The objective of this thesis is to examine a host of health and mental health outcomes among youth aged 14 to 18 years from a study generalizable to the entire United States …
Multicultural Competence, White Privilege Attitudes And The Working Alliance In Clinical Supervision, Michelle A. Stahl
Multicultural Competence, White Privilege Attitudes And The Working Alliance In Clinical Supervision, Michelle A. Stahl
Dissertations
Research indicates that White supervisors have difficulty facilitating and integrating multicultural issues in supervision (Fong & Lease, 1997; Hird, Tao, & Gloria, 2004). A factor that interferes with a multicultural focus in supervision is the multicultural competence of the supervisor (Miville, Rosa, & Constantine, 2005). Moreover, as a result of White privilege, White supervisors may also be less aware of their cultural selves and subsequently less inclined to discuss multicultural issues in supervision (Hird et al., 2004). Lack of attention to important multicultural issues, such as White privilege, can interfere with the development of an effective supervisory alliance (Constantine & …

Understanding Post Adoption And Guardianship Instability For Children And Youth Who Exit Foster Care: Study Design Options, Nancy Rolock
Understanding Post Adoption And Guardianship Instability For Children And Youth Who Exit Foster Care: Study Design Options, Nancy Rolock
Faculty Scholarship
For children living in foster care, adoption and guardianship are important permanency outcomes when reunification with their biological family is not advisable. Most children living in adoptive or guardianship families do not reenter state custody after adoption or guardianship finalization. But five to 20% of children may experience post adoption and guardianship instability. “Post adoption and guardianship instability†refers to situations in which children who exit foster care to adoptive and guardianship homes no longer reside with their adoptive parent or legal guardian. Instability may be formal (when a child reenters foster care) or informal (when a child lives temporarily …

Dissertations
Gagliano, Stacey. Protective factors for secondary traumatic stress in residential treatment staff. Unpublished Doctor of Philosophy Dissertation, University of Northern Colorado, 2020. This cross-sectional study examined the relationship between empathy, a problem-focused coping style, compassion satisfaction (CS), staff cohesion, and symptoms of secondary traumatic stress (STS) in residential treatment center (RTC) staff, while controlling for previous direct trauma exposure. A total of 44 participants were recruited from RTCs in a western state and included mental health care providers (clinical staff), direct-care staff, and educational staff. Participants completed a 62-question electronic survey that included several self-report measures evaluating each of the …

Oral Histories
Bowman became active in the Civil Rights movement in her young adult life. She was active in various organizations including the NAACP, in which she participated in the Youth March on Washington (1958). In her time with the NAACP, she met Aloncita J. Food, a regional director for the Alpha Kappa Alpha sorority. Flood made Bowman promise she would join the AKA’s upon her higher education graduation. In 1966, Bowman officially joined the Bronx Eta Omega Omega Chapter as its youngest member. Within the Eta Omega Omega Chapter, Bowman participated primarily in children and family based initiatives, including working with …

Jacqueline Everette Brown, Mark Naison
Oral Histories
As one of the founding members of Eta Omega Omega, Brown played an integral part in the chartering process, including fundraising and recruitment. As time passed, Brown became less active in the chapter due to familial commitments. In 1969, Brown graduated from Hunter College with a degree in social work. Although Brown adored her time in New York City, especially because most of her family lived there, she was ready for something new – and the South was calling her name. In 1974, she accepted a position as the Clinical Director of a drug treatment program in Atlanta, Georgia, where …
Public Discussion About Critical Issues In Criminal Justice Reform, Kevin H. Wozniak
Public Discussion About Critical Issues In Criminal Justice Reform, Kevin H. Wozniak
Qualitative Criminology (QC)
Through analysis of six focus groups with 44 black and white residents of the greater Boston metropolitan area, this paper presents a qualitative assessment of people’s “zone of acquiescence” for justice reinvestment reform, paying particular attention to people’s criminal justice budget preferences and their openness to sentencing reform for violent offenders. When asked to write their own crime prevention budgets, participants chose to invest more money into the infrastructure and social services of communities than into police, probation, or prisons, arguing that the former is in greater need of funding than the latter. Most participants were initially resistant to sentencing …
Incarceration Experiences Of Older African American Adults Living With Hiv - A Constructivist Grounded Theory Study., Verena Schmidt
Incarceration Experiences Of Older African American Adults Living With Hiv - A Constructivist Grounded Theory Study., Verena Schmidt
Electronic Theses and Dissertations
Two epidemics disproportionally impact older (50 years and over) African Americans compared to the general U.S. population: Incarceration and HIV/AIDS. Those aged 50 and older constitute the fastest growing age group of persons who are incarcerated in the United States. It is estimated that by the year 2030 about one third of the incarcerated population in the U.S. will be aged 55 years and older. While areas of “Incarceration, racial disparities and HIV” as well as “Aging and HIV” have been well studied and discussed in the literature, little is known about the lived incarceration experiences of African American persons …
Radical Renewal, The Sisters Of Loretto, Nouvelle Theologie, And The Second Vatican Council., Carol Bolton Easterly
Radical Renewal, The Sisters Of Loretto, Nouvelle Theologie, And The Second Vatican Council., Carol Bolton Easterly
Electronic Theses and Dissertations
This thesis explores the experiences of women who were members of the Sisters of Loretto, an American congregation of women religious, in the years around the Second Vatican Council (1962 – 65). It argues that the ideas of nouvelle théologie – a movement among progressive European Catholic scholars aimed at reconnecting faith with lived experience – had a profound impact on how the Sisters of Loretto interpreted the Council’s directives. The movement’s core ideas: ressourcement, a return to original sources of Christian inspiration; an overlapping relationship between natural and supernatural; and the importance of Church engagement with modern social …
Exploring The Relationship Between Mindfulness, Self-Compassion, And Empathy In Student Therapists, Nicole Montes
Exploring The Relationship Between Mindfulness, Self-Compassion, And Empathy In Student Therapists, Nicole Montes
Dissertations
Literature suggests that the practice of mindfulness may foster self-compassion within the practitioner. Mindfulness is also associated with increased empathy towards others. The current study explored the relationship between a mindfulness intervention and student clinicians’ levels of self-compassion and empathy towards a mock “client.” Graduate student clinicians were randomly assigned to two groups: one that participated in a mindfulness exercise then viewed a mock client video, and another that did not participate in the mindfulness exercise and went directly to viewing the mock client video. Participants’ levels of empathy towards the client and self-compassion were measured. The results revealed no …

Counselor Education Doctoral Students’ Research Self-Efficacy: A Concept Mapping Approach, Zahide Sunal
Counseling & Human Services Theses & Dissertations
Research self-efficacy (RSE) is a key concept not only for counselor educators as successful researchers but also for the advancement of counselor education field. In the literature, researchers have studied multiple factors (e.g., research interest, productivity) to understand the complex nature of RSE phenomenon. Despite being informative, these studies only focused on partial aspects of the multilayered RSE, showing methodological and conceptual limitations. Particularly, we do not have a holistic understanding of RSE and the interrelated relationship among the factors informing RSE. In the current study, the researcher used a mixedmethods design, Concept Mapping (Kane & Trochim, 2007) to explore …

Practitioners’ Use Of Yoga With Children Who Have Experienced Trauma, Megan Sease
All Theses
Various types of traumatic events may impact children’s (ages 2-11) emotional, cognitive, social, physical, and/or spiritual health. Yoga, a holistic treatment, has the potential to address the impact of trauma on children’s mind and the body. However, throughout the literature, there are inconsistencies related to the use of yoga with children who have experienced trauma. To address these inconsistencies, using a descriptive quantitative research design, the purpose of this study was to explore how, why, and by whom yoga is implemented with children (2-11 years old) who have experienced trauma. Findings showed that healthcare and non-healthcare professionals implement yoga with …
Mental Healthcare Providers' Personality And Its Relation To Preferences Of Client Personality, Taylor R. Rodriguez
Mental Healthcare Providers' Personality And Its Relation To Preferences Of Client Personality, Taylor R. Rodriguez
Master's Theses
The incorporation of personality assessment and client treatment preferences in psychotherapy has implications for therapeutic processes and outcomes (e.g., treatment engagement, retention). While this research has largely focused on client characteristics and traits, mental healthcare providers seem to demonstrate differing perspectives of clients as a function of both their own and their clients’ personalities. However, no prior literature has considered providers’ pretreatment preferences of clients. The current study aimed to examine providers’ unique personality profiles and their associations with preferences for client personality characteristics utilizing a person-centered personality approach (i.e., latent profile analysis). Specifically, the study (1) examined providers’ personality …

The Effectiveness Of A Mindfulness, Acceptance, Valued Action, And Flexible Coping Intervention For Race-Based Stress On Momentary Coping And Distress Symptoms, Jennifer Honculada Martinez
The Effectiveness Of A Mindfulness, Acceptance, Valued Action, And Flexible Coping Intervention For Race-Based Stress On Momentary Coping And Distress Symptoms, Jennifer Honculada Martinez
Graduate Doctoral Dissertations
Racism and racism-related stress has been shown to be associated with negative mental health outcomes among people of color (POC), such as increased depressive and anxious symptoms (e.g., Williams, Neighbors, & Jackson, 2003). Further, approximately up to 98% of all POC report experiencing a racist experience over the past year and in their lifetime, indicating that racism-related stress is a chronic experience. Most research on coping with racism has evaluated the cross-sectional impact of racism and mental health but has yet to identify which coping strategies may be most effective as buffers against the psychological impact of racism. Further, little …
Student Perceptions Of Learning In Cooperative Education Experiences, An Embedded Mixed Methods Study, Katherine Ehlert
Student Perceptions Of Learning In Cooperative Education Experiences, An Embedded Mixed Methods Study, Katherine Ehlert
All Dissertations
Calls for improved educational practices within the field of engineering are focusing on content delivery, suggesting that authentic engineering tasks will better prepare students for engineering in the 21st century. Co-operative education (co-op) can provide such experiences. Studies indicate students who have participated in co-op programs typically graduate with higher GPAs, have an easier time transitioning into full-time work, and begin working at higher starting salaries. Although successful outcomes of co-op have been documented, little is documented on the ways in which co-op provides these benefits. The purpose of this embedded mixed-methods study is to document student perceptions of what …

Pragmatic Language And Behavioral And Emotional Functioning- A Systematic Review: Implications For Research And Interprofessional Practice, Erica Pritzker
Dissertations, 2020-current
Pragmatic language, or social communication, develops throughout childhood and adolescence. Deficits in pragmatic language ability have been found to impact social, emotional, and behavioral functioning in this population. This association has been found across a number of diagnostic presentations including autism spectrum disorder, specific language impairment, attention deficit-hyperactivity disorder, conduct disorder, and oppositional defiant disorder. This study utilized a systematic review methodology with an interprofessional approach, to explore the current literature for evidence of interventions targeting pragmatic language positively impacting emotional and behavioral outcomes in children and adolescents across a range of diagnoses and across multiple disciplines. Five interventions met …
The Independence-Dependence Paradox Facing Youth Aging Out Of Care From Transitional Living Programs, Rebecca Johnson
The Independence-Dependence Paradox Facing Youth Aging Out Of Care From Transitional Living Programs, Rebecca Johnson
College of Liberal Arts & Social Sciences Theses and Dissertations
Problem. Youth who age out of care experience poor outcomes, including high rates of mental health conditions, housing instability and homelessness, unemployment and poverty, and justice involvement. At particular risk are youth who exit semi-institutional care settings, including transitional living programs (TLPs) that support youth with achieving “independence” by the time they emancipate. This project explores: (1) how the child welfare TLPs instill independence in youth aging out of care and (2) the intersection of race and racism in the independence construction process that occurs during the transition out of care. Methods. This project used a qualitative case study approach. …
Making A Decision On Ethical Decision-Making Models, Melanie K. Johnson
Making A Decision On Ethical Decision-Making Models, Melanie K. Johnson
All Graduate Theses and Dissertations, Spring 1920 to Summer 2023
Those in the helping professions, like psychology, counseling, and social work, have numerous ethical guidelines and codes to dictate ethical behavior. These codes, while extensive, do not encompass all situations. When professionals find themselves in an ambiguous situation, it is called an ethical dilemma. Many of the professional organizations that create ethical codes also recommend the use of ethical decision-making models. Ethical decision-making models provide steps, or instructions, on how to make an ethical decision when presented with an ethical dilemma.
Little research has been done on ethical decision-making models, so it cannot be concluded that these models actually help …
