Combing Texts: A Quest To Increase The Timeliness And Accuracy Of Geotagging Multilingual Toponyms And Tagging Persons In Large Corpora Using Tensors For Disambiguation, Anthony D. Davis Feb 2020

Combing Texts: A Quest To Increase The Timeliness And Accuracy Of Geotagging Multilingual Toponyms And Tagging Persons In Large Corpora Using Tensors For Disambiguation, Anthony D. Davis

Theses and Dissertations

This research demonstrates an effective algorithm and provides a tool for efficient and accurate disambiguation of domain specific texts. The goals outlined in the research are: 1) to demonstrate that a simple knowledge base can be used to tag texts, 2) to demonstrate that a tensor can be used to efficiently and accurately tag entities in raw text documents, and, 3) create and provide a machine learning digital humanities tool for scholars interested in early Christian documents in English and Greek from late-antiquity. The research shows that a simple knowledgebase using a comma delimited file along with a rank-3 tensor …

Peregrinatio: Anever-Ending Pilgrimage To An Unspecified End, Bernice Lamb-Senechal Feb 2020

Peregrinatio: Anever-Ending Pilgrimage To An Unspecified End, Bernice Lamb-Senechal

International Journal of Religious Tourism and Pilgrimage

To most modern-day thinkers a pilgrimage entails a journey to a sacred place. Thus, the primary purpose of the voyage is to reach a locale that holds special meaning for the pilgrim. Typically, the end destination is a place where a significant familial, historical or religious event has occurred. In contrast to this contemporary understanding of pilgrimage, some Irish Christian monks of late antiquity undertook sacred journeys of an indefinite duration with no express terminus in mind. Furthermore, these monastic sojourners exiled themselves from their homeland vowing never to return to kith and kin. This working paper explores the practice …

Pilgrimaging Through Time: The Theoretical Implications Of Continuing Journeys On The Shikoku Henro, John Shultz Feb 2020

Pilgrimaging Through Time: The Theoretical Implications Of Continuing Journeys On The Shikoku Henro, John Shultz

International Journal of Religious Tourism and Pilgrimage

Fantastic growth in the field of pilgrimage studies raises real questions about whether our theories and methods are up to the task of describing increasingly diverse phenomena. Herein, I maintain that the future of the field lies not with articulating some vague generalisations in an attempt to somehow maintain universals, but to consciously ponder the variability found with respect to pilgrimage. I argue that pilgrimage analysis needs to be more ground-up with a methodological focus on how key variables shape the fundamental meaning of pilgrimage. I demonstrate such methods by looking at the relativity of time in the context of …

Negotiating With The Sacred Other: The Ancient Mechanisms Of The Personal Vow Practice, Mirela Hrovatin Feb 2020

Negotiating With The Sacred Other: The Ancient Mechanisms Of The Personal Vow Practice, Mirela Hrovatin

International Journal of Religious Tourism and Pilgrimage

By questioning the anthropological definition of vows as instrumental prayers, which has been generally accepted since William Christian (1989) introduced it, the paper will discuss the notion of a vow as a personal prayer in the effort to expand it beyond the mere request for a miracle or fulfilment of a pilgrim’s or believer’s wish. The votive prayer is mentioned already in the Bible (Deut. 23) as a somewhat problematic way of communicating with God due to a promise it contains. Based on the Amir Mashiach’s (2014) interpretation of prayers as performative utterances in the Jewish tradition and Radoslav Katičić's …

The Idea Of A National Church In The Ukrainian Intellectual Discourse, Natalia Ishchuk, Oleksandr Sagan Feb 2020

The Idea Of A National Church In The Ukrainian Intellectual Discourse, Natalia Ishchuk, Oleksandr Sagan

Occasional Papers on Religion in Eastern Europe

The reception of the idea of a national church in the Ukrainian intellectual environment in the context of current socio-political events in the country is examined here. Among the most influential Ukrainian religious scholars, there is a dominant idea that the formation of a national church is a part of the state formation and security of the country. They opposed historical distortions of this idea, as it occurs in case of ethnophyletism—domination of the national over the ecclesiastical, and etatism—the domination of the state, imperial (in the form of the Orthodox empire) over the ecclesiastical. Signs of these distortions are …

Exvangelical: Why Millennials And Generation Z Are Leaving The Constraints Of White Evangelicalism, Colleen Batchelder Feb 2020

Exvangelical: Why Millennials And Generation Z Are Leaving The Constraints Of White Evangelicalism, Colleen Batchelder

Doctor of Ministry

This research presents the argument that Millennials and Generation Z are not leaving the church; they are reconstructing their faith and distancing themselves from fundamentalism. When exploring the history of evangelicalism, church history, and generational distinctives, one is given the opportunity to develop a deeper understanding of generational dynamics in regard to faith, theology, and praxis.

Chapter 1 explores the various distinctions and biases that encompass each generation. It also provides background for how generational influence shaped the narrative of the church, faith, and purpose.

Chapter 2 tackles the generational shift in ecclesiology and gives readers a glimpse into the …

Fear Voting: Securitization Of Migration In The Context Of European Parliament Election 2019 In The Czech Republic, Martin Brozik Feb 2020

Fear Voting: Securitization Of Migration In The Context Of European Parliament Election 2019 In The Czech Republic, Martin Brozik

Theses and Dissertations

This thesis is devoted to the phenomenon of securitization of migration. This phenomenon is observed on a case study of Election campaigns before the EU Parliament election in May 2019 in the Czech Republic. The thesis looks into if and how the relevant political parties used securitization of migration in their election manifestos. By using a combination of a disciplined interpretive case study and content analysis, a framework is created based on Thierry Balzacq's theory on securitization. The content analysis uses the scope of various levels (context, attributes, statements) to identify individual securitization speech acts. This thesis sees securitization on …
