Stories We Carry Into Classrooms: The Literacy Narratives Of Teachers Of Students With Complex Support Needs, Sharon L. Head
Stories We Carry Into Classrooms: The Literacy Narratives Of Teachers Of Students With Complex Support Needs, Sharon L. Head
Special Education ETDs
In this study, I used a case-based narrative inquiry to investigate the literacy narratives and the thinking about instructional practices of four teachers of students with complex support needs (CSN) from a small, rural school district in the Southwestern United States. I conducted initial and follow-up interviews and facilitated two focus groups across an eight-week period using a process designed to look at teacher narratives across time and after interactions with peers. My data were in the form of transcripts of all interviews and focus groups that I analyzed using two analytic processes: thematic and narrative (Polkinghorne, 1995). I described …

The Impact Of Religion On Meaning And Mental Health In Young Adults, Sara Sharp
The Impact Of Religion On Meaning And Mental Health In Young Adults, Sara Sharp
Academic Festival
Mental illness is an increasing problem in today's society especially among young adults. Young adults are in the stage of their lives where existential questioning is a major concern. Existential questioning includes the meaning of life, life after death, the presence of a God and other major concerns that do not have one true, clear answer. Meaning-making and purpose in life is a major contributing factor to the mental wellness of an individual. Religion, as a meaning making entity, can aid in the treatment of mental illness and avoidance of developing the illnesses to some degree. Religion also provides treatment …

Considering The Great Divorce (Parts I And Ii), J. R. Christopher
Mythopoeic Society Seminar Proceedings
THIS IS A TWO-PART ARTICLE. IN ORDER TO READ OR DOWNLOAD THE OTHER PART, FOLLOW THE LINK AT THE END OF THIS ABSTRACT.
The author takes two approaches in this discussion of The Great Divorce: enumerating the medieval sources and analogues for Lewis’s story, particularly The Divine Comedy but also other dream-visions such as The Romance of the Rose; and seeking out modern parallels and inspirations, such as Forster’s “The Celestial Omnibus” but more importantly Tolkien’s “Leaf by Niggle” and Williams’s All Hallows’ Eve.

The Language Of J.R.R. Tolkien In The Lord Of The Rings, Judy Winn Bell
The Language Of J.R.R. Tolkien In The Lord Of The Rings, Judy Winn Bell
Mythopoeic Society Seminar Proceedings
Analyzes Tolkien’s use of language: instances of word-magic and name-magic, style to denote character and nationality, syntax to emphasize mood and the social level of characters, and the contrast of archaism and simplicity in some of the most powerful moments. Also looks more closely at the individualized speech patterns of Gollum, Tom Bombadil, and Treebeard, as well as speech markers used for hobbits, Elves, and the Rohirrim.

Nietzsche’S Death Of God And The Slave-Revolt In Morality, Ryan Haarer
Nietzsche’S Death Of God And The Slave-Revolt In Morality, Ryan Haarer
Showcase of Undergraduate Research and Creative Endeavors (SOURCE)
None of Nietzsche’s theses stands out quite as much as his “Death of God” thesis. An argument can be made that the death of God is the result of the changes that the slave-revolt within morality bring about. Drawing on the observations that Nietzsche and scholars have made about the slaves and Christians, it is plausible that certain activities that the groups engaged in led to the unbelievability, or death, of God. The activities that will be given attention within this essay are the slave’s and Christian’s desire for progress and truth, which have negative and unintentional effects on other …

Bonding Through Books Behind Bars: Reconnecting Incarcerated Mothers/Grandmothers With Children, April Terry, April Terry
Bonding Through Books Behind Bars: Reconnecting Incarcerated Mothers/Grandmothers With Children, April Terry, April Terry
SACAD: Scholarly Activities
Bonding through books is a piloted project that sought to engage incarcerated mothers/grandmothers through furthering their literacy skills to promote prosocial relationships with their children/grandchildren. Literacy measurements often consider fourth-grade literacy as the measure for future achievement. Approximately 68% of children in the U.S. do not meet this standard with most youth coming from rural, low-income or at-risk homes—an almost exact match for incarcerated mothers and children in Kansas. We sought to help reduce prison disciplinary issues, ease the reintegration process, and increase success upon release. This was accomplished through both live (on-site) and recorded read aloud sessions and measured …

Old Testament Election: God’S Exclusive Means Of Bringing About Global Redemption, Parker Williams
Old Testament Election: God’S Exclusive Means Of Bringing About Global Redemption, Parker Williams
Senior Honors Theses
This thesis will seek to explore the doctrine of election as it appears in the Old Testament. It will attempt to provide a robust, biblical conception of the doctrine, shedding light on its nature and purpose, viewing the Bible as a singular story of God’s redemptive work. It will consider and assess election as God’s act of divine prerogative—being at times individual but primarily corporate. While inherently partial, effort will be taken to defend the doctrine against common objections this partiality draws. Rather, it will be shown that as the means by which He initiated His gracious plan of salvation, …

Panji In The Age Of Motion; An Investigation Of The Development Of Panji-Related Arts Around Java, Adrian Perkasa
Panji In The Age Of Motion; An Investigation Of The Development Of Panji-Related Arts Around Java, Adrian Perkasa
Wacana, Journal of the Humanities of Indonesia
The first half of the twentieth century in Indonesia is often remembered as the Age of Motion. The term “motion” (pergerakan) is invariably used in history textbooks for students and in the official Indonesian historiography: Sejarah nasional Indonesia (Kartodirdjo, Poesponegoro, and Notosusanto 1975; Poesponegoro and Notosusanto 2008) and in the new edition, Indonesia dalam arus sejarah (Lapian and Abdullah 2012). Political movements in Indonesia always dominated the discourses of pergerakan at the expense of developments in other sectors, including culture. This cultural development, particularly in Java, was intricately intertwined with the upsurge in Javanese and then Indonesian nationalism, an expansion …
Academic Field Influence On Acquisition Of Global Awareness In Undergraduate Study Abroad Students, Tim Schmalz
Academic Field Influence On Acquisition Of Global Awareness In Undergraduate Study Abroad Students, Tim Schmalz
Dissertations
Very little comprehensive research has been done thus far examining the effects of academic discipline on study abroad outcomes. This study investigated potential differences between global awareness scores across different academic disciplines for students that participated in study abroad during their undergraduate academic programs. Five hundred and eight-five current and past university students took a short survey modified from a Chieffo & Griffiths 2004 study. Overall global awareness scores, as well as scores for four sub-characteristics: intercultural awareness, personal growth & development, awareness of global interdependence, and functional knowledge of world geography & languages – were compared across student majors …

Heidegger's Phenomenology: 1919-1929, Joseph Arthur Giavotella
Heidegger's Phenomenology: 1919-1929, Joseph Arthur Giavotella
LSU Master's Theses
In this work, I show Martin Heidegger’s development of the phenomenological method from 1919 to 1929 as his main approach to all philosophical inquiry. In Chapter 1: Phenomenology as the Hermeneutics of Factical Life, I first show how Heidegger begins his philosophical career in 1919 with lectures that describe phenomenology as an ‘original science’ that seeks to study the structural character of life in itself. Through the four sub-sections of Chapter 1, I show how Heidegger continues to formulate distinct stages of phenomenological methodology through these early lectures that aid in his task to continue the explication of life through …
A Naturalistic Inquiry Of Pilgrims’ Experience At A Religious Heritage Site: The Case Of A Shaktipitha In India, Harveen Bhandari, Amit Mittal
A Naturalistic Inquiry Of Pilgrims’ Experience At A Religious Heritage Site: The Case Of A Shaktipitha In India, Harveen Bhandari, Amit Mittal
International Journal of Religious Tourism and Pilgrimage
Religion in the Indian context is an inseparable element that dominates Indian lives, culture and psyche wherein significant number of people undertake pilgrimages every year. Pilgrims travel to different religious sites spread throughout the country and an intimate bonding exists between people and religious sites that invariably constitute their heritage. The worship of deities is a significant and popular ancient custom in the history of Indian culture. Pilgrims to any religious heritage site participate in different activities and their involvement in these activities builds their spiritual experience. So, the purpose of this research was to investigate the pilgrims experience at …
Night Of The Witch: Alternative Spirituality, Identity And Media, Andreana Tarleton
Night Of The Witch: Alternative Spirituality, Identity And Media, Andreana Tarleton
LSU Master's Theses
This thesis works to understand the relationships witches and conjurors have with the film and television depictions of them. Employing the method of film critique, I argue that the witch stands as a cultural symbol in the US of women and femmes with power, and that their stories serve as lessons to these populations about what it means to be an acceptable woman or femme, while simultaneously creating and perpetuating stereotypes of magic practitioners. Then, using the combination of hashtag ethnography, in-person and video interviewing and internet surveys, I argue that #witchblr and #witchesofcolor, as well as the space of …

The Necessity Of Divine Hiddenness, Daniel Riggins
The Necessity Of Divine Hiddenness, Daniel Riggins
Showcase of Osprey Advancements in Research and Scholarship (SOARS)
Divine silence – or how many perceive it, divine hiddenness – is the source of one of the most important and broadly discussed objections for belief in God. Dr. Michael Rea, philosophy of religion professor at the University of Notre Dame, made the claim that divine silence is one of the most important sources of doubt and spiritual distress not solely for those contemplating belief, but also for those who already believe in the existence of God. For some believers, the silence of God can be reconciled while for others it is only evidence of either a God who lacks …
