Evaluating The Safety And Mobility Of The Cumulative-Anticipative Car-Following Model For Connected Autonomous Vehicles, Hafiz Usman Ahmed
Evaluating The Safety And Mobility Of The Cumulative-Anticipative Car-Following Model For Connected Autonomous Vehicles, Hafiz Usman Ahmed
Civil and Environmental Engineering
The advancements of vehicle automation are progressively improving resulting in safer driving environments in addition to more efficient mobility and fuel cost savings. However, autonomous and connected autonomous vehicles (AVs, CAVs) require decades to achieve complete market penetration. It is important to investigate the coexistence of conventional and autonomous cars during such a transition period. Traditionally, adaptive cruise control (ACC) and cooperative ACC (CACC) models were used for the AVs to guide their car-following. Recently, the cumulative-anticipative car-following (CACF) model was developed with consideration of the cumulative influences from surrounding vehicles through vehicle-to-everything (V2X) communication. This study further evaluates the …

Investigation Of Novel Approaches For Improved Amphiphilic Fouling-Release Coatings, Alireza Rahimi
Coatings and Polymeric Materials
Marine biofouling has troubled mankind, both environmentally and economically, since they set sail, resulting in many undesired consequences such as increased drag, reduced maneuverability, increased fuel consumption and greenhouse gas emissions, and heightened maintenance costs. This problem is highly complex as it involves more than 4000 marine organisms with varying modes of adhesion and surface preferences as well as many aquatic environments. The common state-of-the-art approaches to contend with marine biofouling on the submerged surfaces of ships in seawater has antifouling (AF) and fouling-release (FR) surfaces. As AF coating systems utilize biocides which are often toxic to the environment to …

The Effects Of Eating Disorder Disclosure On Interpersonal Attraction On Mobile Dating Apps, Maranda Marie Berndt
Communication
In the United States, stigma surrounding mental illness is ever present. With a large misrepresentation from the media, those suffering with mental illnesses, like eating disorders, often face different types of social rejection. Due to the stigma surrounding mental illness, and eating disorders, the disclosure of such an illness to another person can result in a negative impression of the sender. There is little research looking at how mental illness disclosures can affect the formation of a romantic relationship, specifically from the perspective of the receiver of a disclosure. Looking specifically at the format of mobile dating apps, this study …
Cooley’S Constitutional Limitations And Constitutional Originalism, Lawrence B. Solum
Cooley’S Constitutional Limitations And Constitutional Originalism, Lawrence B. Solum
Faculty Scholarship
Thomas Cooley’s A Treatise on The Constitutional Limitations Which Rest upon the Legislative Power of the States of the American Union was the most influential treatise of constitutional law in the second half of the nineteenth century. This Essay explores the ideas expressed in Cooley’s treatise in light of contemporary originalist constitutional theory. In many ways, Constitutional Limitations anticipated some of the key moves made by contemporary public meaning originalists, including the interpretation-construction distinction and the idea that ordinary meaning, and not technical meaning, is the baseline for constitutional interpretation.

All Roads Lead To Rome: A Jurisprudential Genealogy Of Feminism, Sexual And Gender-Based Violence And International Criminal Law, Jessica M. Zaccagnino
Connecticut Journal of International Law
Sexual and gender-based violence is prevalent in armed conflicts throughout all corners of the world. The elevation—and recognition—of sexual and gender-based violence as violence qua violence is an arduous and continual struggle. Although international humanitarian and human rights law purports to proscribe sexual and gender-based violence, the language of the law often minimizes the gravity of this violence and fails to hold perpetrators accountable. This Article argues that to elevate sexual and gender-based violence crimes in the international humanitarian and criminal law hierarchy, there must be a radical reconceptualization of gender under international law. But, in order to envision the …
The Complexities Of Democracy, Development, And Human Rights In China's Belt And Road Initiative, Diane A. Desierto
The Complexities Of Democracy, Development, And Human Rights In China's Belt And Road Initiative, Diane A. Desierto
Connecticut Journal of International Law
China's Belt and Road Initiative (BRI)—a dense network of China-funded multi-year infrastructure projects in over 65 countries from the Western Pacific to the Baltic Sea, collectively aiming to establish China's strategic "Maritime Belt" and "Silk Road" connectivity using an estimated range of USD$1 Trillion to USD$8 Trillion—is as unprecedented phenomenon in sovereign project financing and bilateral investment lending, since the United States' grant of USD $800 Billion for the Marshall Plan was for Europe’s post World War II reconstruction. The scale, scope, and terms of BRI projects remain shrouded in relative opacity, with China as of this writing only incrementally …

Trust And Anti-Autonomy Modelling Of Autonomous Systems, Aakanksha Rastogi
Computer Science
Human trust in autonomous vehicles is built upon their safe and secure operability in the most ethical, law abiding manner possible. Despite the technological advancements that autonomous vehicles are equipped with, their perplexing operation on roads often give away telltale signs of underlying vulnerabilities to threats and attack strategies which can flag their anti-autonomous traits. Anti-autonomy refers to any conduct of autonomous vehicles that goes against the principles of autonomy and subsequently resulting in their immobilized operations during unexpected roadway situations. The concept of trust is fluid, which is made complicated by anti-autonomous behavior of autonomous vehicles and affects the …

Development And Validation Of Feedback-Based Testing Tutor Tool To Support Software Testing Pedagogy, Lucas Pascual Cordova
Computer Science
Current testing education tools provide coverage deficiency feedback that either mimics industry code coverage tools or enumerates through the associated instructor tests that were absent from the student’s test suite. While useful, these types of feedback mechanisms are akin to revealing the solution and can inadvertently lead a student down a trial-and-error path, rather than using a systematic approach. In addition to an inferior learning experience, a student may become dependent on the presence of this feedback in the future. Considering these drawbacks, there exists an opportunity to develop and investigate alternative feedback mechanisms that promote positive reinforcement of testing …

Exercise And Nutrition To Counter Age-Related Decrements In Muscle Health And Function, Kara Ann Trautman
Health Nutrition and Exercise Science
Muscle atrophy and strength decrements can occur following disease (e.g., cachexia), with increasing age (e.g., sarcopenia), or from disuse related to injury or occupational environment (e.g., microgravity). High-load resistance training and adequate protein and amino acid intake are effective countermeasures. However, high-load training may not be feasible in all populations. Lower intensity resistance training with blood flow restriction (BFR) is an effective alternative and its benefits may be increased when combined with supplementation of protein and leucine. Two studies explored the relationships between nutrient intake and physical activity and the effects of short-term combination on muscle health in middle age. …
