The Experience Of Latina Victims Of Domestic Violence In Seeking Support Services, Jeanine Chuya
The Experience Of Latina Victims Of Domestic Violence In Seeking Support Services, Jeanine Chuya
Walden Dissertations and Doctoral Studies
The purpose of this study was to explore the factors that influence the decisions among Latina victims of domestic violence as to whether to seek support services after experiencing domestic violence. Various studies have found a higher rate of domestic violence among Latinas than other ethnic minority groups. A review of the contemporary literature demonstrated that little is known about factors influencing these womenâs decisions about whether to seek support services post domestic violence experiences. Intersectionality and structural violence theory constituted this studyâs framework. The research questions explored the lived experiences of Latina victims of domestic violence in seeking help …
Association Of Social Support And Depressive Symptoms Among African Americans, Jacketta Renee Cobbs
Association Of Social Support And Depressive Symptoms Among African Americans, Jacketta Renee Cobbs
Walden Dissertations and Doctoral Studies
Depression affects over 120 million individuals worldwide; in the United States, depression is a leading cause of disability for individualsâ ages 15-44 years. Social support can affect both physical and depressive symptoms; therefore, most patients with heart failure (HF) need support from family and/or friends to effectively manage their health condition. This indicates family and/or friends are expected to be the core support system for long term care of those with HF. The purpose of this study was to determine whether social support contributes to depressive symptoms among African Americans with HF. The research questions examined the experience of different …

Employee Engagement And Job Satisfaction’S Impact On Productivity In The Distribution Industry, Jessica Copeland
Walden Dissertations and Doctoral Studies
Productivity deficiencies in distribution services are detrimental to profitability, annually causing billions of dollars in reporting losses industry-wide. Understanding employees’ motivating factors in meeting metric-based expectations is essential to enhancing overall performance. Grounded in the motivation-hygiene theory, the purpose of this correlational study was to examine the relationships among employee engagement, job satisfaction, and productivity within the distribution industry. Electronic survey data were analyzed for 47 participants who completed the Mensah Employee Engagement Survey, Mensah Job Satisfaction Survey, and Utrecht Work Employee Engagement Survey. The results of the multiple linear regression were significant, F(2, 44) = 36.84, p = .001, …

An Interpretive Qualitative Study Of Idaho Head Start Families Facing Food Insecurity, Sherry Deiter
Walden Dissertations and Doctoral Studies
The purpose of this basic interpretive qualitative study was to examine food insecurity among Idaho Head Start enrolled families, focusing on barriers and deterrents to accessing available nutrition assistance programs. The social-ecological model (SEM) was used as the theoretical foundation for this study. Based on this model, the research questions were designed to explore experiences of participants related to individual, interpersonal, community, organizational, policy, and educational factors that influenced food insecurity. Parents who had children enrolled in Idaho Head Start programs that met purposeful sampling criteria were recruited for the study. A total of 11 parents, all who had experiences …

Examining The Impact Of An Afterschool Program On The Lives Of At-Risk Youth, Hazel Green-Dunston
Walden Dissertations and Doctoral Studies
The purpose of this phenomenological qualitative study was to examine the lived experiences, and the impact mentoring has on at-risk youths between the ages of 11-14 years of age in afterschool programs in the southeast region of the United States. It addresses if afterschool mentoring programs reduce juvenile delinquency in at-risk youths. The theoretical framework of this qualitative study is Bandura’s social learning theory in which individuals have a chance to reproduce a desirable behavior outcome. The social learning theory suggests that when exposing at-risk youths to positive behaviors, they have a lower probability of engaging in delinquent activities. The …
Charter School Principals Perceived Self-Efficacy Implementing The Every Student Succeeds Act, Christina Renee Hamilton
Charter School Principals Perceived Self-Efficacy Implementing The Every Student Succeeds Act, Christina Renee Hamilton
Walden Dissertations and Doctoral Studies
Charter school principals have existed in the U.S. public school system for more than 30 years, and the number has grown dramatically in Southern California over the past decade. Like other principals, charter school principals are responsible for implementing the provisions of the Every Student Succeeds Act of 2015 (ESSA). Yet, charter school principals perceptions of self-efficacy are not well enough understood to determine their effective implementation of ESSA. The purpose of this qualitative study was to identify and describe the self-efficacy of charter school principals who implemented the multiple accountability measures of ESSA in Southern California. The theoretical framework …
Effectiveness Of An Educational Intervention To Reduce Preanalytical Specimen Errors, Carol Ann Lineberry
Effectiveness Of An Educational Intervention To Reduce Preanalytical Specimen Errors, Carol Ann Lineberry
Walden Dissertations and Doctoral Studies
A rejected blood specimen can be very costly to a hospital as well as to the patient. Many errors occur in the preanalytical phase in which nurses and assistive personnel are often involved because they are usually not trained to do so. This staff education project was designed to decrease the number of laboratory rejections of blood specimens in a local hospital setting. Knowles’s adult learning theory was combined with the knowledge translation framework, proposed by Fredericks, Martorella, and Catallo, so that evidence-based changes in practice could occur more readily. There is a 20-minute in-service educational intervention followed by an …
Job Satisfaction And Turnover Among Millennial Nurses In Public Hospitals, Gwen Mancuso
Job Satisfaction And Turnover Among Millennial Nurses In Public Hospitals, Gwen Mancuso
Walden Dissertations and Doctoral Studies
This study addressed turnover of millennial generation behavioral health nurses (MGBHNs). Because retention strategies mitigate the consequences of turnover, the purpose of this quantitative, correlational study was to examine job satisfaction (JS) and anticipated turnover (AT) intention among MGBHNs employed in U.S. public hospitals. Research questions were focused on determining what, if any, correlation exists between AT and JS. The theoretical frameworks were Herzberg’s theory and person in environment theory. A multiple linear regression and 5 Spearman’s rho correlation analyses were used to analyze data from a convenience sample of 65 MGBHNs to understand the relationship between the independent variables …
Portrait Narratives Of Caring Teachers For African American High School Students, Larissa T. Mccormick
Portrait Narratives Of Caring Teachers For African American High School Students, Larissa T. Mccormick
Walden Dissertations and Doctoral Studies
For African American high school students, caring relationships extend beyond peer
interaction to include supporting adults, most particularly teachers, who are pivotal to
their educational experience and success or lack of success. The research problem
centered on the lack of diversity and authentic voice when discussing caring teacher-student relationships. Markedly, the voices of African American high school students
were lacking from the current body of research literature. The purpose of this narrative
qualitative study was threefold: (a) to capture the voices of African American high school
studentsâ as they shared their experience(s) about a caring teacher; (b) to capture the …
Staff Education On Heart Failure Guidelines And Self-Care Management Practices, Mary Mitcheltree
Staff Education On Heart Failure Guidelines And Self-Care Management Practices, Mary Mitcheltree
Walden Dissertations and Doctoral Studies
Heart disease is the leading cause of death in the United States with heart failure (HF) being one of the more prevalent diseases associated with heart disease. HF is reported to have a high mortality rate and presents an economic burden to the U.S. healthcare system. To improve patient outcomes and reduce the costs of treatment for HF-related symptoms, infusion nurses need adequate education and training. The purpose of this project was to train home infusion nurses on self-care management practices based on current HF guidelines. The Donabedian model, known for quality assurance, provided the framework to support the educational …

Parents’ Perceptions Of Financial Technology To Support Financial Socialization And Literacy Levels, Patricia M. Page
Walden Dissertations and Doctoral Studies
The current generation of emerging adults are ill-equipped to navigate the evolving financial landscape, which can further exacerbate socioeconomic inequality. Extant research rooted in Gudmunson and Danes’ family financial socialization theory and Brown et al.’s situated cognition theory, which served as the conceptual framework for this study, acknowledged the long-standing influence of parents and authentic learning opportunities on child(ren)’s financial literacy and well-being. This study’s research questions explored parents’ experience with, and perceptions of, a family-managed virtual bank and prepaid debit card service designed for children ages Pre-K through college. The basic qualitative approach and semistructured interviews provided context to …

Evaluating Integrated Treatment On Recidivism For Female Offenders In Criminal Justice System, Oyin T. Popoola
Walden Dissertations and Doctoral Studies
The burden of co-occurring disorders (CODs) among offenders in the criminal justice system (CJS) in the United States, particularly among the female population, is threatening the communities. About 80% of women in the CJS were diagnosed and treated for CODs, and 63% tend to be rearrested. The study examined the possible influence of CODs, integrated treatment of CODs, and gender, on recidivism while controlling for other demographic factors. The study was based on the conceptual framework of integrated dual disorder treatment (IDDT) and feminist criminology theory. Cross-sectional quantitative study design was applied on a secondary dataset from the 2017 Treatment …

Case Analysis Of Acute Care Guidelines For The Prevention Of Pressure Ulcers, Carle Ray
Walden Dissertations and Doctoral Studies
Prevention of pressure ulcers (PUs) in acute care settings is an attempt to avoid adverse events (AE). Literature shows that wounds such as PUs are the most prevalent complication for spinal cord injury patients (SCI) including quadriplegic individuals (QI). SCI and QI bring important pressure ulcer (PU) prevention knowledge to the hospital which involves teamwork and participation by nurses, organizations, and patients. The purpose of this qualitative study was to examine the effectiveness of acute care guidelines for PUs by drawing insights from multiple sources including interviews with QI, healthcare clinicians, care providers, family members, and an online search of …
Use Of Managerial Epidemiology By Healthcare Leaders In Ambulatory Settings, Chantelle Schenning
Use Of Managerial Epidemiology By Healthcare Leaders In Ambulatory Settings, Chantelle Schenning
Walden Dissertations and Doctoral Studies
Despite many health reforms, the United States continues to struggle with limited healthcare access, exponential healthcare costs, and poor quality of care. Overcoming these challenges requires healthcare leadersâ effective navigation of industry transformation towards population health and a shift in patient volume to ambulatory healthcare settings. Research has demonstrated that the use of managerial epidemiology, an application of epidemiology tools and principles to management decision-making within healthcare organizations, can better serve the health of the population and could improve the triple aim of inadequate access, high costs, and poor quality. However, the adoption of this practice is weak and its …
Relationship Between Burnout And Academic Teaching Level Among Nursing Faculty, Erica Lynn Sciarra
Relationship Between Burnout And Academic Teaching Level Among Nursing Faculty, Erica Lynn Sciarra
Walden Dissertations and Doctoral Studies
Nursing faculty function as healthcare providers, educators, mentors, advisors, and researchers, which contributes to the development of emotional exhaustion or burnout due to role overload. Symptoms of burnout may vary among nursing faculty depending on academic teaching level, tenure status, and educational preparation and may influence the physical and psychological health of nursing faculty, potentially affecting work productivity, career longevity, and the number of future nurses educated. The purposes of this study, guided by Maslach’s multidimensional burnout theory and the job demands resources model, were to determine (a) if there was a difference in level of burnout between graduate and …
Media Exposure To Crime, Fear Of Crime, And Social Interaction Anxiety, Genea Shoulders
Media Exposure To Crime, Fear Of Crime, And Social Interaction Anxiety, Genea Shoulders
Walden Dissertations and Doctoral Studies
In 2000, approximately 30% of all news stories in mass media focused on crime. According to research, increased exposure to the media directly correlates to an increased fear of crime; however, little research has been conducted into this influential relationship and the extent of which it could affect a person’s social interaction anxiety. Therefore, the study’s purpose was to examine the relationship and consequential impact of media exposure and the extent of which the fear of crime had on individuals’ social interaction anxiety levels. Through a quantitative approach, this study used the theory of cultivation. Question one examined the effect …
Associate Degree Nursing Graduates’ Experiences Of The Transition From Student To Nurse, Katherine Margaret Slusser
Associate Degree Nursing Graduates’ Experiences Of The Transition From Student To Nurse, Katherine Margaret Slusser
Walden Dissertations and Doctoral Studies
Attrition among newly graduated nurses remains a top concern among nursing leaders in the United States. Many published studies about new graduate nurses focus on bachelors-prepared nurses or on mixed populations of nurses that include both associate and baccalaureate degree graduates. No published studies were located that focused specifically on the Associate Degree Nursing (ADN) graduate. The purpose of this qualitative, interpretive phenomenological study was to understand the experiences of transition after graduation and into professional nursing of newly employed nurses who graduated from an ADN program. The theoretical basis for this study was Meleis’s transition theory. The research question …

Enterprise Resource Planning Implementation In Higher Education: Cost Containment Strategies, Tysha K. Tolefree
Walden Dissertations and Doctoral Studies
Lack of effective cost containment strategies to support enterprise resource planning (ERP) system implementations within higher education institutions (HEIs) result in budget overruns 50% of the time. Grounded in Gartnerâs IT cost containment techniques, the purpose of this qualitative multiple case study was to explore strategies HEI project directors use to support a successful ERP implementation on time and within budget. The participants comprised 5 project directors and managers from HEIs and another public organization in the state of Washington. Data were collected from semistructured interviews, archival data, and organization documents. Thematic analysis was used to analyze the data, and …
Thoughts, Crimes, And Thought Crimes, Gabriel S. Mendlow
Thoughts, Crimes, And Thought Crimes, Gabriel S. Mendlow
Michigan Law Review
Thought crimes are the stuff of dystopian fiction, not contemporary law. Or so we’re told. Yet our criminal legal system may in a sense punish thought regularly, even as our existing criminal theory lacks the resources to recognize this state of affairs for what it is—or to explain what might be wrong with it. The beginning of wisdom lies in the seeming rhetorical excesses of those who complain that certain terrorism and hate crime laws punish offenders for their malevolent intentions while purporting to punish them for their conduct. Behind this too-easily-written-off complaint is a half-buried precept of criminal jurisprudence, …

Symmetry's Mandate: Constraining The Politicization Of American Administrative Law, Daniel E. Walters
Michigan Law Review
Recent years have seen the rise of pointed and influential critiques of deference doctrines in administrative law. What many of these critiques have in common is a view that judges, not agencies, should resolve interpretive disputes over the meaning of statutes—disputes the critics take to be purely legal and almost always resolvable using lawyerly tools of statutory construction. In this Article, I take these critiques, and the relatively formalist assumptions behind them, seriously and show that the critics have not acknowledged or advocated the full reform vision implied by their theoretical premises. Specifically, critics have extended their critique of judicial …
America's Paper Prisons: The Second Chance Gap, Colleen Chien
America's Paper Prisons: The Second Chance Gap, Colleen Chien
Michigan Law Review
Over the last decade, dozens of states and the federal government have enacted “second chance” reforms that increase the eligibility of individuals arrested, charged, or convicted of crimes to shorten their sentences, clear their criminal records, and/or regain the right to vote. While much fanfare has accompanied the increasing availability of “second chances,” little attention has been paid to their delivery. This study introduces the concept of the “second chance gap,” which it defines as the difference between eligibility and delivery of second chance relief; explores its causes; and approximates its size in connection with several second chance laws and …
Assessment Of Intensive Care Family Satisfaction, Jami Burnette
Assessment Of Intensive Care Family Satisfaction, Jami Burnette
Doctor of Nursing Practice Projects
There continues to be an unknown factor in knowing true patient and family satisfaction within the intensive care unit (ICU) setting. Current literature reveals surveys used to measure patient satisfaction do not pertain to the ICU setting. Patients often do not remember the ICU stay due to critical illness and are unable to actively participate with care. Families act as surrogates, are included in patient care, and collaborate with nursing and medical teams to help make care decisions. Families are integral in the patient care process and are vital members of the health care team. Even though families are included …

Improving Workplace Incivility By Educating Frontline Nurse Leaders: The Charge Nurse, Temika Ford
Doctor of Nursing Practice Projects
The term workplace incivility is often replaced interchangeably with workplace bullying, horizontal/lateral violence, psychosocial harassment, intimidating behavior, and/or aggression (micro/macro). Workplace incivility in nursing has lasting effects on the profession through worsening the nursing shortage, contributing to low morale, negative working environments, safety issues for staff and patients, stress-related health problems, absenteeism, and decreased quality of patient care. Incivility can be from a variety of sources including: Nurse managers, clinical team leads, unit coordinators, physicians, patients, and other healthcare professionals. Buy-in by nursing executive leadership and evidence-based education for nurses is mandatory to address organizational incivility.
The purpose of this …

Civility Promotion: How It Affects Workplace Incivility, Shawanda Lang
Doctor of Nursing Practice Projects
Incivility is also known as uncivil behavior, horizontal violence, or bullying. These terms are often used to describe the conduct an individual may display toward another that are deemed undesirable in healthcare organizations. Uncivil behavior has been an increasing topic in healthcare and has consequently gained the attention of organizations such as the American Nurses Association and regulatory agencies such as The Joint Commission. Incivility has the opportunity to affect teamwork, individual well-being, and patient safety. The aim of this project was to promote civility by bringing knowledge and awareness of the participants through an educational series. Although the pre …

Work Well: Promoting Health Behaviors And Self-Care Amongst Public School Faculty, Staff, & Administrators, Sherri Smith
Doctor of Nursing Practice Projects
Workplace wellness is a critical aspect within an organization. Failure to encourage and meet the wellness needs of staff can lead to increased absenteeism, decreased productivity, as well as increased stress levels. Improved workplace wellness in an academic setting has not only potential positive impact on employees but also the students they teach. Evidence shows that implementing wellness initiatives in academic settings has the potential to improve the overall wellbeing of teachers as well as students. Interventions include a Walkabout Challenge, a Caring Peer Group, and education. The interventions are an effort to improve self-care habits amongst faculty and staff …
