Structure Modification To Enhance Pulse Protein Functions And Flavor Profile Opportunities In Saccharide Mediated Glycation Via Maillard-Driven Chemistry, Fengchao Zha Jan 2020

Structure Modification To Enhance Pulse Protein Functions And Flavor Profile Opportunities In Saccharide Mediated Glycation Via Maillard-Driven Chemistry, Fengchao Zha

Plant Sciences

Owing to the combined characteristics of low allergens and lipids, as well as high versatility and abundance, eco-friendly pulse-based protein has served as a critical contender to supplement animal protein. The inferior solubility and off-flavor, however, place a practical restriction on its application. Glycation via Maillard-driven reaction is a potential green chemistry to modulate protein structure and functions. The various types of protein, saccharides with different molecular mass and structural characteristics, and two reaction systems (dry and wet heating) were applied to synthesize protein-saccharides conjugates. The aims were to investigate (i) the effect of glycation on functionalities and flavor of …

Further Characterization Of Pathogen Virulence And Genetic Mapping Of New Virulence Genes In Pyrenophora Tritici-Repentis, The Causal Agent Of Tan Spot Of Wheat, Jingwei Guo

Plant Sciences

The ascomycete Pyrenophora tritici-repentis (Ptr) causes tan spot of wheat, a devastating foliar disease on both common wheat (Triticum aestivum L., 2n=6x=42, AABBDD) and durum (T. turgidum ssp. durum L., 2n=4x=28, AABB). Ptr is known to produce three necrotrophic effectors (NEs), namely Ptr ToxA, Ptr ToxB and Ptr ToxC, to cause disease by interacting with corresponding host sensitivity genes. However, many studies in the last twenty years have suggested that Ptr produces additional virulence factors. My Ph.D. research focused on further identification and genetic mapping of new virulence genes in Ptr. In Chapter 2, a bi-parental fungal population was developed …

Transfer Of Fhb Resistance Genes Into Hard Red Winter Wheat, Venkata Rao Ganaparthi Jan 2020

Transfer Of Fhb Resistance Genes Into Hard Red Winter Wheat, Venkata Rao Ganaparthi

Plant Sciences

Fusarium head blight (FHB) is a serious foliar disease of hard red winter wheat (HRWW) in North Dakota. Disease resistance was identified as major component in disease management. First objective of this study is to transfer resistance QTL, Qfhb.rwg.5A.2 into HRWW germplasm. Second part of this study aims is to confirm FHB resistance of two-triticale-Th. distichum addition lines (W1450 and W1451) and attempt to bring acrocentric addition chromosome in W1450 into common wheat, and characterization of W1423X-3 progeny in search of true breed resistance genotype. Qfhb.rwg-5A.2 is transferred into three different populations, and haplotype consisting of three SNP close to …

Pre-Breeding To Improve Yield And Disease Resistance Of Hard Red Winter Wheat, Dylan Mitchell Barry Jan 2020

Pre-Breeding To Improve Yield And Disease Resistance Of Hard Red Winter Wheat, Dylan Mitchell Barry

Plant Sciences

Challenges to growing winter wheat in North Dakota include winter temperature and disease pressure. Fusarium head blight (FHB) is a devastating disease that necessitates breeding for resistance. In the NDSU breeding program FHB resistance genes are often associated with a decrease in performance. This study used single seed descent to advance lines while maintaining a near random population. Early generation (F4) selection focused heavily on yield and the presence of FHB resistance quantitative trait loci to develop winter wheat lines with FHB resistance and high yield. Stripe rust is a fungal disease that is becoming increasingly problematic in North Dakota. …

Functional Bioactive Compounds From Sweet Potatoes For Human Health Benefits, Pradeepika Chintha Jan 2020

Functional Bioactive Compounds From Sweet Potatoes For Human Health Benefits, Pradeepika Chintha

Plant Sciences

Global food and nutritional insecurities, public health challenges of diet-linked non-communicable chronic diseases (NCDs), and rapid climate change-linked agricultural production challenges are interconnected and require urgent attention. Therefore, to address these complex and interconnected challenges, it is essential to advance robust and resilient strategies based on sustainable agricultural production practices, wider integration of nutritionally-balanced plant-based foods in the diet, improvement of human health-targeted nutritional qualities, post-harvest preservation qualities and food processing optimization. Therefore, food plants that are climate resilient and rich source of human health protective nutritional bioactives, such as sweet potato are ideal dietary targets for advancing global food …

Management Strategies For The Cultivation Of Hop, A Specialty Crop For North Dakota, Nickolas Dana Theisen

Plant Sciences

Field experiments were conducted in 2017 and 2018 at the NDSU Horticulture Research Farm near Absaraka, ND to evaluate the growth and yield characteristics of twelve commercial hop cultivars in response to varied training densities. Cultivars were trained at two, four, and eight bines per crown each season. Cultivars produced significantly higher yield (kg/ha) trained with eight bines per crown in 2018. ‘Nugget’, and ‘Canadian Red Vine’ significantly yielded highest in 2017. ‘Nugget’, ‘Canadian Red Vine’, and ‘Cascade’ significantly yielded highest in 2018. Research investigating mulching as a weed control method on mature hop production systems was conducted. Hop cultivars …

Understanding Host Resistance And Pathogen Biology In The Wheat-Fusarium Graminearum Pathosystem, Bikash Poudel Jan 2020

Understanding Host Resistance And Pathogen Biology In The Wheat-Fusarium Graminearum Pathosystem, Bikash Poudel

Plant Sciences

Fusarium head blight (FHB) is a major challenge in global wheat production. In the United States, the disease is predominantly caused by the fungus Fusarium graminearum. Utilization of FHB-resistant wheat cultivars integrated with other measures such as fungicide application is the most effective approach for the management of this disease. This study aimed to 1) identify novel quantitative trait loci (QTL) for resistance to FHB in a Brazilian spring wheat cultivar ‘Surpresa’ through bi-parental mapping, 2) detect QTL for FHB resistance in a global panel of 233 spring wheat accessions by genome-wide association analysis (GWAS), and 3) localize genomic regions …

Cognitive Biases, Dark Patterns, And The ‘Privacy Paradox’, Ari Ezra Waldman Jan 2020

Cognitive Biases, Dark Patterns, And The ‘Privacy Paradox’, Ari Ezra Waldman

Articles & Chapters

Scholars and commentators often argue that individuals do not care about their privacy, and that users routinely trade privacy for convenience. This ignores the cognitive biases and design tactics platforms use to manipulate users into disclosing information. This essay highlights some of those cognitive biases – from hyperbolic discounting to the problem of overchoice – and discusses the ways in which platform design can manipulate disclosure. It then explains how current law allows this manipulative and anti-consumer behavior to continue and proposes a new approach to reign in the phenomenon.

Articles & Chapters

This Article provides the first systematic account and justification of software applications as works of scholarship. Software is scholarship to the extent that software functionality is derived from scholarly research, software is used as a means to develop scholarship, or software is used as a medium to communicate scholarly ideas. Software applications are superior to articles and books for communicating scholarly ideas because software is not limited by the constraints of traditional written works. Software can communicate using a wide variety of textual components, graphical elements, and programmable interactivity that significantly enhance the ability to communicate scholarly concepts, arguments, and …

You That Build The Death Planes: Bob Dylan, War And International Affairs, Michael L. Perlin Jan 2020

You That Build The Death Planes: Bob Dylan, War And International Affairs, Michael L. Perlin

Articles & Chapters

Several years ago, I wrote that Bob Dylan was “a scholar with a well-developed jurisprudence on a range of topics including civil, criminal, public, and private law” (Perlin, 2011, p.1396). In that article, I discussed and analyzed Dylan songs that dealt with, variously, civil rights, inequality in the criminal and civil justice systems, institutions, governmental/judicial corruption, equality and emancipation, and the role of lawyers in the legal process. (Id.). But I noted that I was omitting – for space considerations – any discussion of Dylan songs dealing with war and international affairs (Id., p. 1398, n. 15).

In this paper, …

Getting Past Possession: Subsurface Property Disputes As Nuisances, Joseph Schremmer Jan 2020

Getting Past Possession: Subsurface Property Disputes As Nuisances, Joseph Schremmer

Faculty Articles

Property rights in the subsurface of land are adapting to accommodate modern activities like massive hydraulic fracturing (fracing). Property rights will need to continue adapting if they are to accommodate other developing activities like large-scale carbon capture and storage (CCS). Courts and commentators rarely approach the nature of subsurface property directly. They tend instead to discuss appropriate standards for tort liability when disputes arise — for example when artificial fissures from a frac treatment extend into and drain oil or gas from a neighbor’s land. The case law and literature generally approach unauthorized subterranean invasions as trespasses. Because the tort …

The Lesser Of Two Evils: Lowering The Constitutional Amendment Bar To Avoid An Unadaptable Constitution, Encouraged Judicial Activism, And Disrupted Federalism, Hayley Stillwell Jan 2020

The Lesser Of Two Evils: Lowering The Constitutional Amendment Bar To Avoid An Unadaptable Constitution, Encouraged Judicial Activism, And Disrupted Federalism, Hayley Stillwell

Faculty Articles

The Constitution has not been amended for nearly three decades. During this time, the line in the sand between political parties has morphed into an impenetrable wall that neither side can or is willing to breach. This begs the question whether the constitutional amendment process in Article V is presently functional. If Article V is no longer functional, then the constitutional amendment process itself needs to be amended. Drastic as this sounds, it is the lesser of two evils. The alternative—accepting that Article V is dead and the Constitution cannot be amended—will lead to a distorted world in which the …

In A World Of "Fake News," What's A Social Media Platform To Do?, Evelyn Aswad

Faculty Articles

While the circulation of disinformation and misinformation online can pose a variety of risks to societies around the world, it should also be of concern that overreacting to such false information can undermine human rights, including freedom of expression. The business operations of global social media platforms frequently intersect with this latter concern because of a spike in the adoption of national laws that ban “fake news” as well as their own platform policies to tackle false information. This Essay assesses the corporate responsibility standards afforded by the United Nations’ Guiding Principles on Business & Human Rights as well as …

Losing The Freedom To Be Human, Evelyn Aswad Jan 2020

Losing The Freedom To Be Human, Evelyn Aswad

Faculty Articles

In 2019, Apple’s CEO warned that contemporary business models, which are based on harvesting our personal data and monetizing everything we do online, violate our privacy and will eventually cause us “to lose the freedom to be human.” Others have taken this privacy concern a step further by questioning whether these business models undermine mental autonomy, i.e., the ability to think and form opinions. The burgeoning chorus of concerns has triggered a variety of high-profile calls to explore whether international human rights law protects against intrusions on the inner sanctum of one’s mind, particularly with respect to the business models …

To Protect Freedom Of Expression, Why Not Steal Victory From The Jaws Of Defeat?, Evelyn Aswad Jan 2020

To Protect Freedom Of Expression, Why Not Steal Victory From The Jaws Of Defeat?, Evelyn Aswad

Faculty Articles

Global social media platforms are grappling with whether to align their corporate speech codes with international human rights law. Facebook’s June 2019 report that summarized worldwide feedback about its proposed independent oversight board for content moderation noted a split in stakeholder opinions on this topic. The UN’s top expert on freedom of expression as well as many civil society members recommended that Facebook anchor its content moderation in the international human rights law regime. Others expressed concern that this legal regime would not be sufficiently protective of speech and contained inconsistencies that create problems for content moderation. Those concerns were …

Police Funding, Stephen Rushin, Roger Michalski Jan 2020

Police Funding, Stephen Rushin, Roger Michalski

Faculty Articles

A number of civil rights activists have called for the defunding or abolition of American police departments. These activists claim that the United States overinvests in police, leaving fewer scarce resources to support other government services. Activists also claim that overinvestment in policing contributes to higher rates of police misconduct and unnecessary criminalization, particularly in communities of color. This Article considers these calls for the defunding of police. It ultimately cautions against widespread defunding of police and offers an alternative proposal. Part I brings together multiple national databases on local government expenditures to evaluate empirically how states and municipalities fund …

Double Jeopardy’S Dual Sovereignty: A Tragic (And Implausible) Lack Of Humility, Stephen E. Henderson, Dean Strang Jan 2020

Double Jeopardy’S Dual Sovereignty: A Tragic (And Implausible) Lack Of Humility, Stephen E. Henderson, Dean Strang

Faculty Articles

The core proposition of the Fifth Amendment’s Double Jeopardy Clause is as intuitive as it is straightforward. After all, if a state could prosecute someone despite her previous conviction or acquittal, then the scope of punishment would be unlimited and its threat unending—the sort of proposition only a tyrant could love. Yet, in Gamble v. United States, the Supreme Court once again blessed a dual sovereignty exception that permits just such duplicative prosecutions. We hardly are the first to question this rule, but we submit the Court’s most recent primary mistakes were two. First, the Court began from a …

Double Standards: An Empirical Study Of Patent And Trademark Discipline, Jon J. Lee Jan 2020

Double Standards: An Empirical Study Of Patent And Trademark Discipline, Jon J. Lee

Faculty Articles

Our legal system is built on the foundation that lawyers have a number of coexisting and sometimes conflicting duties — to their clients, to others who might be affected by their practice, and to the effective and equitable administration of justice. While most lawyers fulfill these duties ethically, invariably some fail to live up to these expectations. For this reason, all states have created disciplinary authorities to regulate and sanction lawyer misconduct. The United States Patent and Trademark Office (“USPTO”) is one of the few agencies to have developed its own disciplinary system for policing the conduct of trademark attorneys …

Enhancing Cybersecurity By Generating User-Specific Security Policy Through The Formal Modeling Of User Behavior, Arwa Alqadheeb

Theses and Dissertations

Despite the ongoing efforts to develop cutting-edge security solutions, the question always remains whether these technologies can overcome system vulnerabilities that often result from poor security practices made by end-users. Recently, some research devoted to study the human role in cybersecurity, especially the psychological aspect. Researchers found that the users’ responses to security-related situations correlate with various elusive factors such as demographics, personality traits, decision-making styles, and risk-taking preferences. That explains why some users neglect to act according to common security tips and advice. The goal of this research is to make cybersecurity maintain a high-level of quality and reliability; …

There is no FDA-approved treatment for metastatic uveal melanoma (UM) and overall outcomes are generally poor for those who develop liver metastasis. We performed a retrospective single-institution chart review on consecutive series of UM patients with liver metastasis who were treated at Thomas Jefferson University Hospital between 1971–1993 (Cohort 1, n = 80), 1998–2007 (Cohort 2, n = 198), and 2008–2017 (Cohort 3, n = 452). In total, 70% of patients in Cohort 1 received only systemic therapies as their treatment modality for liver metastasis, while 98% of patients in Cohort 2 and Cohort 3 received liver-directed treatment either alone …

BACKGROUND: Pre-clinical studies suggest that metformin and statins may delay prostate cancer (PCa) metastases; however, data in humans are limited. To the best of our knowledge, this is the first human study aimed to quantify the individual and joint effects of statin and metformin use among patients with high-risk PCa.

METHODS: This population-based retrospective cohort study identified patients from the Surveillance, Epidemiology, and End Results (SEER)-Medicare linked database. Exposure to metformin and statins was ascertained from Medicare Prescription Drug Event files. The association with all-cause and PCa mortality were evaluated using Cox proportional hazard model with competing causes of death, …
