Beyond Policing, India Thusi

Books & Book Chapters by Maurer Faculty

We all deserve to live in communities where we feel safe

And true community safety means feeling safe from violence by the state, which includes the police. Social inequity has systematically and institutionally permeated our country since its founding, becoming more visible at various times in our history. We are now living in one of those moments of tremendous clarity, and it calls on us to look deeply at the efficacy of the reforms and narratives which preceded it . The deadly consequences of political decisions that create health disparities are now a wound that cannot be unseen as the …

Unmanaged forests may exhibit a higher degree of biodiversity compared to managed forests. We examined and compared the stand structure, density, and volume of deadwood components of managed and unmanaged mixed forests of Trojan fir (Abies nordmanniana subsp. equi-trojani [Asch. & Sint. ex Boiss] Coode & Cullen)-Scots pine (Pinus sylvestris L.) in northern Turkey. The single-tree selection method has been employed in the managed forests. Density of large live trees ha-1, density of standing deadwood (SDW) ha-1, and volume of lying deadwood (LDW) (m3 ha-1) were calculated for both treatments (i.e. managed or unmanaged). Results showed that unmanaged forests had …

Detection And Thermal Stabilization Of Virus Based On Surface Properties, Xue Mi Jan 2020

Detection And Thermal Stabilization Of Virus Based On Surface Properties, Xue Mi

Dissertations, Master's Theses and Master's Reports

Viral diseases take the lives of millions of people each year. The most effective methods to prevent viral disease outbreak are viral detection to reduce contact with viral pathogens and vaccines to prevent disease. To reduce the costs of the detection of viruses and improve vaccine formulation, we explored viral surface properties. The properties we have focused on are viral hydrophobicity and surface charge using chemical force microscopy (CFM). CFM is a single-particle technique that measures the adhesion force of a functionalized atomic force microscopy (AFM) probe, and in this study, a virus covalently bound to a surface. The non-enveloped …

In the past twenty years, fluorescence sensing and imaging based on fluorescent probes has been developed as an imperative technique due to the merits including excellent sensitivity, operational simplicity, instant time effectiveness and outstanding selectivity in the research areas such as mineralogy, gemology, biological medicine, materials and environmental engineering. Protons act as a significant role in a variety of pathological and physiological processes, and there are obvious differences in the pH among organelles: the pH in lysosomes is acid within the range of 4.5–5.5, whereas mitochondrial pH is basic that can be as high as 8.0. Abnormal intracellular pH is …

Aging Pipeline Infrastructure In The United States: How Do A Changing Policy Mix, Issues Of Energy Justice, And Social Media Communication Impact Future Risk Analysis?, Brent Burns Jan 2020

Aging Pipeline Infrastructure In The United States: How Do A Changing Policy Mix, Issues Of Energy Justice, And Social Media Communication Impact Future Risk Analysis?, Brent Burns

Dissertations, Master's Theses and Master's Reports

Over two and a half million miles of pipeline cross the United States today, half of which is over fifty years old and thus was designed, located, and debated without today’s modern environmental policies in place. Aging pipeline infrastructure, such as the (infamous in Michigan) Enbridge Line 5 pipeline underwater crossing at Michigan’s Straits of Mackinac, has undergone increased public scrutiny and risk analysis this past decade. This has led to the potential for policy changes in the historically stable energy services institution associated with pipeline infrastructure regulation. While policy process literature generally describes how policy changes over time, it …

Letetr Positively Regulates 3-Hydroxylation Of The Antifungal Hsaf And Its Analogs In Lysobacter Enzymogenes Oh11, Lingjun Yu, Vimmy Khetrapal, Fengquan Liu, Liangcheng Du

Liangcheng Du Publications

The biocontrol agent Lysobacter enzymogenes OH11 produces several structurally distinct antibiotic compounds, including the antifungal HSAF (Heat Stable Antifungal Factor) and alteramides, along with their 3-dehydroxyl precursors (3-deOH). We previously showed that the 3-hydroxylation is the final step of the biosynthesis and is also a key structural moiety for the antifungal activity. However, the procedure through which OH11 regulates the 3-hydroxylation is still not clear. In OH11, the gene orf3232 was predicted to encode a TetR regulator (LeTetR) with unknown function. Here, we deleted orf3232 and found that the LeTetR mutant produced very little HSAF and alteramides, while the 3-deOH …

Inequality In The Social Mind: Social Comparison And Support For Redistribution, Meghan Condon, Amber Wichowsky Jan 2020

Inequality In The Social Mind: Social Comparison And Support For Redistribution, Meghan Condon, Amber Wichowsky

Political Science Faculty Research and Publications

Income inequality is fundamentally relational in nature, but research on the American public’s response to it tends to examine individuals in isolation, concluding that support for redistribution is unresponsive to inequality. We focus instead on perceptions of relative socioeconomic position, which we manipulate experimentally through imagined social interactions with high- or low-status others. We find that subjects who make social comparisons between themselves and someone who is socioeconomically advantaged perceive their own status as lower, assess their own socioeconomic status more accurately, and become more supportive of social welfare spending, even though we provide no factual information about the income …

Primary Primers: While Trump’S Impeachment Now Seems Forgotten, It Damaged His Political Capital And Reduced His Sway In The Republican Party, Julia R. Azari

Political Science Faculty Research and Publications

To say that 2020 has been an eventful year is an understatement. A global pandemic, national uprisings against racial injustice, an economic collapse – these are just the major items. It’s easy to forget that earlier this year, President Trump survived an impeachment trial. Below, Julia Azari explores how this has affected the 2020 election. She argues it appears to have damaged his standing as an individual and made him even more reliant on the Republican Party, thus giving him less influence in shaping the response to the COVID-19 pandemic and reducing his political capital in an election year.

Introduction: An Unsettled Time From American Political Development And The Trump Presidency, Philip Rocco, Zachary Callen

Political Science Faculty Research and Publications

As the words of his inaugural address echoed across a rain- soaked National Mall, Donald Trump cut a hole in time. His presidency, he said, marked a breaking point in American politics. No longer would a “small group” of elites reap the benefits of government while “forgotten Americans” bore the cost. “Now,” Trump suggested, “we are only looking to the future.” Even so, the speech telegraphed a dystopian pre sent; the United States had become a landscape of rusted- out factories, cities teeming with crime, and national borders defenseless against terrorist threats. Gone was the promised land that Trump’s predecessors …

Causal Discovery In Radiographic Markers Of Knee Osteoarthritis And Prediction For Knee Osteoarthritis Severity With Attention-Long Short-Term Memory, Yanfei Wang, Lei You, Jacqueline Chyr, Lan Lan, Weiling Zhao, Yujia Zhou, Hua Xu, Philip Noble, Xiaobo Zhou

Faculty, Staff and Student Publications

The goal of this study is to build a prognostic model to predict the severity of radiographic knee osteoarthritis (KOA) and to identify long-term disease progression risk factors for early intervention and treatment. We designed a long short-term memory (LSTM) model with an attention mechanism to predict Kellgren/Lawrence (KL) grade for knee osteoarthritis patients. The attention scores reveal a time-associated impact of different variables on KL grades. We also employed a fast causal inference (FCI) algorithm to estimate the causal relation of key variables, which will aid in clinical interpretability. Based on the clinical information of current visits, we accurately …

Preconditioning Of Mesenchymal Stromal Cells With Low-Intensity Ultrasound: Influence On Chondrogenesis And Directed Sox9 Signaling Pathways, Neety Sahu, Gaurav Budhiraja, Anuradha Subramanian

Department of Chemical and Biomolecular Engineering: Faculty Publications

Background: Continuous low-intensity ultrasound (cLIUS) facilitates the chondrogenic differentiation of human mesenchymal stromal cells (MSCs) in the absence of exogenously added transforming growth factor-beta (TGFβ) by upregulating the expression of transcription factor SOX9, a master regulator of chondrogenesis. The present study evaluated the molecular events associated with the signaling pathways impacting SOX9 gene and protein expression under cLIUS.

Methods: Human bone marrow-derived MSCs were exposed to cLIUS stimulation at 14 kPa (5 MHz, 2.5 Vpp) for 5 min. The gene and protein expression of SOX9 was evaluated. The specificity of SOX9 upregulation under cLIUS was determined by treating the MSCs …

Exploring Cultural Logic In Becoming Teacher: A Collaborative Autoethnography On Transnational Teaching And Learning, Taeyeon Kim, Heather L. Reichmuth Jan 2020

Exploring Cultural Logic In Becoming Teacher: A Collaborative Autoethnography On Transnational Teaching And Learning, Taeyeon Kim, Heather L. Reichmuth

Department of Educational Administration: Faculty Publications

Departing from the view that learning is a linear progression, we argue that through the lens of cultural historical activity theory (CHAT) and cultural logic, teacher learning research can be advanced. Applying these two constructs to a collaborative autoethnography of two emerging scholars’ transnational teaching and learning experiences in the US and South Korea we argue that implicit and explicit norms in a culture influence the process of becoming teacher in the Korean context. Findings suggest that socio-cultural elements of implicit beliefs and norms outside of schools are linked to teacher learning inside schools, thereby suggesting that teacher learning at …

Shared Leadership For Learning In Denver’S Portfolio Management Model, A. Chris Torres, Katrina Bulkley, Taeyeon Kim

Department of Educational Administration: Faculty Publications

Purpose: This study examines how district governance and different school contexts in Denver’s portfolio management model affect shared leadership for learning. We define this as shared influence on instructional leadership and school-wide decision making, which research suggests have strong ties to student achievement and teacher commitment. Method: We analyze interview data from 53 administrators, teacher leaders, and teachers in eight case study schools and teacher surveys in 48 schools. In both data sets, we purposively sampled based on variance in school performance ratings and by school type (e.g., traditional public, stand-alone charter, charter management organization [CMO], and innovation schools). Findings: …

Institutional Responses To Events Challenging Campus Climates: Examining The Power In Language, Crystal Garcia, Benjamin Arnberg, Jessica Weise, Marit Winborn Jan 2020

Institutional Responses To Events Challenging Campus Climates: Examining The Power In Language, Crystal Garcia, Benjamin Arnberg, Jessica Weise, Marit Winborn

Department of Educational Administration: Faculty Publications

This qualitative study explored administrative responses to local and sociopolitical events challenging campus climates at public research universities. Using critical discourse analysis, we examined the use of language as a form of power in publicly available documents addressing campus climate for diversity and inclusion at 31 U.S. institutions. Findings center 3 themes: underlying power in determining what to address; the power of language in perpetuating or deconstructing power, privilege, and oppression; and the distinction between espousing and enacting commitments to diversity, equity, and inclusion. Implications for research and practice are discussed.

Computation-Driven Analysis Of Model Polyextremo- Tolerant Fungus Exophiala Dermatitidis: Defensive Pigment Metabolic Costs And Human Applications, Wheaton L. Schroeder, Steven D. Harris, Rajib Saha

Department of Chemical and Biomolecular Engineering: Faculty Publications

Extremophiles are organisms that can live in extreme conditions of temperature, acidity, alkalinity, or salinity. Studying these organisms not only expands our knowledge on the diversity of life but can also provide significant insights into how organisms adapt to stress, particularly metabolic and regulatory responses. Exophiala dermatitidis (hereafter, Exophiala or E. dermatitidis, also known as Wangiella derma- titidis), a highly melanized black fungus and perhaps best known for its H. sapiens (hereafter, human) path- ogenic properties (Paolo et al., 2006; Poyntner et al., 2016; Sudhadham et al., 2008), is a potential model extremophile system owing to its small genome of …

Reframing Community (Dis)Engagement: The Discursive Connection Between Undemocratic Policy Enactment, Minoritized Communities And Resistance, James S. Wright, Taeyeon Kim

Department of Educational Administration: Faculty Publications

While studies have examined leadership efforts to improve community engagement, less is known about how deeply rooted structured discourses, systems, and practices influence leadership actions and responses from communities. Deficit approaches to educational policy reform are pervasive in the most historically marginalized communities and school districts in the United States (US). Drawing on critical policy analysis, this study examines a disengaged school district’s leadership of a Federal School Turnaround Policy from the perspectives of minoritized communities in an urban US school district. We analyzed deficit policy discourses, its enactment, and leadership practices using interview data and archived documents. This study …
