A Review Of The Effects Of Dietary Restriction, Dehydration, And Caffeine Withdrawal On Cognition: Implications For A Disabled Submarine Scenario, Sarah Chabal Dec 2020

A Review Of The Effects Of Dietary Restriction, Dehydration, And Caffeine Withdrawal On Cognition: Implications For A Disabled Submarine Scenario, Sarah Chabal

Journal of Human Performance in Extreme Environments

In the event that submariners become trapped aboard a disabled submarine (DISSUB), they must perform a multitude of cognitively demanding tasks in order to maximize their likelihood of survival. During this time, submariners will also be forced to endure poor living conditions, including drastic changes to their nutrition. These nutritional changes have the potential to impair submariners’ cognitive functioning and affect operational performance, which could jeopardize survival; however, the effects of DISSUB nutrition on cognitive performance are not well understood. This review first describes the unique nutritional conditions that submariners will experience in a DISSUB scenario, including the change to …

Incident Duration Time Prediction Using A Supervised Topic Modeling Method, Jihyun Park

Theses

Precisely predicting the duration time of an incident is one of the most prominent components to implement proactive management strategies for traffic congestions caused by an incident. This thesis presents a novel method to predict incident duration time in a timely manner by using an emerging supervised topic modeling method. Based on Natural Language Processing (NLP) techniques, this thesis performs semantic text analyses with text-based incident dataset to train the model. The model is trained with actual 1,466 incident records collected by Korea Expressway Corporation from 2016-2019 by applying a Labeled Latent Dirichlet Allocation(L-LDA) approach. For the training, this thesis …

Folia Medica Indonesiana

This study aims to analyze the administration of mangosteen peel ethanol extract at different doses can reduce levels of malondialdehyde (MDA) and leukotriene B4 (LTB4) serum in male white rats (Rattus norvegicus) Wistar strains exposed to electric cigarette smoke. Electric cigarette induces mitochondrial ROS production and triggers oxidative stress. Antioxidants are needed by the body if there are many free radicals, for example mangosteen peel. This laboratory experimental study uses a randomized post test only control group design. Thirty male white rats were divided into 5 groups randomly (KK, KR, P1, P2, P3). KK given 0.5% Na-CMC, KR given smoke …

Evaluation Of The Diversity Of Durum Wheat Coleoptera (Triticum Durum Desf.) In The Region Of Sigus Oum El Bouaghi (Eastern Algeria), Amokrane Assia, Khammar Hichem, Hadjab Ramzi, Saheb Menouar

Journal of Bioresource Management

The Oum El Bouaghi region in Eastern Algeria, long considered as a cereal-growing area is nowadays a durum wheat production region par excellence. Although the damage caused by Coleoptera is very significant, studies on the knowledge of their diversity are few and remain limited for some entomological groups. Our work is the first step to evaluate the diversity of Coleoptera and the long-term impact of taking biological management measures against harmful fauna in favour of more environment friendly agriculture. To assess the beetle community, different sampling methods were combined (Barber trap, coloured traps, mowing net and sight hunting). Evaluation of …

Monetary Policy Rules In Malaysia, Singapore And Thailand, Chai-Thing Tan, Azali Mohamed Dec 2020

Monetary Policy Rules In Malaysia, Singapore And Thailand, Chai-Thing Tan, Azali Mohamed

Bulletin of Monetary Economics and Banking

This paper investigates whether monetary policies in Malaysia, Thailand and Singapore are best represented by either the Taylor rule or the augmented Taylor rule. It finds that the augmented Taylor rule, which incorporates the exchange rate and government spending, best represents monetary policies in these countries. The results show that past inflation and the output gap play a role in the monetary policy reaction function in Malaysia and Thailand. The results further show a strong preference towards interest rate smoothing, government spending, and the exchange rate by the central banks.

Reframing Housing: Incorporating Public Law Principles Into Private Law, Kristen Barnes Dec 2020

Reframing Housing: Incorporating Public Law Principles Into Private Law, Kristen Barnes

Duke Journal of Comparative & International Law

A new public-private law paradigm is developing with respect to the relationship of the state to private contracts. The paradigm melds private law concepts like unconscionability, good faith, and fair dealing with the public human rights principles of dignity and vulnerability. I trace this paradigm shift in the context of the housing law of Spain, where several rich cultural and legal resources have inspired a new sensibility with regard to residential mortgage loan contracts, rental agreements, and the overall duties and obligations of governments to address the citizenry’s housing needs. Although this reorientation reflects decisions from the European Court of …

Essay: Forks In The Road, Michael P. Vandenbergh, Jonathan M. Gilligan Dec 2020

Essay: Forks In The Road, Michael P. Vandenbergh, Jonathan M. Gilligan

Duke Environmental Law & Policy Forum

This Essay outlines a simple heuristic that will enable public and private policymakers to focus on the most important climate change mitigation strategies. Policymakers face a dizzying array of information, pressure from advocacy groups, and policy options, and it is easy to lose sight of the forest for the trees. Many policy options are attractive on the surface but either fail to meaningfully address the problem or are unlikely to be adopted in the foreseeable future. If policymakers make the right decision when confronting three essential choices or forks in the road, though, the result will be 60% to 70% …

Note: Foundational But Not Fundamental: No Right To The Environment, Robert Torres Dec 2020

Note: Foundational But Not Fundamental: No Right To The Environment, Robert Torres

Duke Environmental Law & Policy Forum

The world is on fire, and despite a general consensus among scientists that climate change is an imminent threat, recent decades have been devoid of legislatures capable of enacting meaningful legislation. The flames rage on as our President, an outspoken denier of climate change, adds fuel to the fire by stripping whatever attempts had been previously made to mitigate the effects of climate change. Forced to live in what seems a forsaken world, nineteen youths, a nonprofit organization, and a scientist on behalf of all future generations brought suit against the United States government, seeking more robust environmental protections. In …

A Step Closer: Economic Integration And The African Continental Free Trade Area, Nsongurua J. Udombana Dec 2020

A Step Closer: Economic Integration And The African Continental Free Trade Area, Nsongurua J. Udombana

Duke Journal of Comparative & International Law

Post-colonial Africa views economic integration as an endogenous means for attaining self-reliant, sustainable development. Working under various regional and sub-regional economic institutions, states elaborated several norms in search of legitimacy in economic competence. However, several political and economic pathogens, including weak institutions, have blighted those efforts. This paper interrogates the African Continental Free Trade Area (AfCFTA or CFTA), which is the latest attempt to reboot the integration drive and achieve sustainable development. The CFTA seeks to create a geographic zone where goods and services will move freely among member states by removing trade distortions and boosting factor mobility, competition, and …

Foreign Interference In Elections Under The Non-Intervention Principle: We Need To Talk About “Coercion”, Steven Wheatley Dec 2020

Foreign Interference In Elections Under The Non-Intervention Principle: We Need To Talk About “Coercion”, Steven Wheatley

Duke Journal of Comparative & International Law

This article looks at the problem of foreign state cyber and influence operations targeting democratic elections through the lens of the non-intervention principle. The work focuses on the meaning of “coercion” following the 1986 Nicaragua case, wherein the International Court of Justice concluded that “[i]ntervention is wrongful when it uses methods of coercion.” The analysis shows that coercion describes a situation where (1) the foreign power wants the target state to do something and wants to be certain this will happen; (2) the outside power then takes some action, either by issuing a coercive threat, using coercive force, or engaging …

Alaska’S Ballot Initiative Today: History, Practice, And Process, Elizabeth M. Bakalar Dec 2020

Alaska’S Ballot Initiative Today: History, Practice, And Process, Elizabeth M. Bakalar

Alaska Law Review

Since statehood, Alaska’s Constitution has included the right of the people to enact legislative change by direct democracy. The state’s initiative process as governed by the Alaska Constitution, statutes, and caselaw reflects a delicate balance of citizen participation within carefully crafted guardrails meant to ensure the efficacy of the process and the role of the legislature. Alaska courts have developed a still-evolving body of caselaw interpreting the restrictions on the subject and scope of ballot initiatives, the role of the executive and judicial branches in the initiative process, and the timing and procedural features of the process. Navigating the initiative …

Alaskan Exceptionalism In Campaign Finance, Chad Flanders Dec 2020

Alaskan Exceptionalism In Campaign Finance, Chad Flanders

Alaska Law Review

This article argues that Alaska’s efforts in campaign finance reform are closely tied to a philosophy of “Alaskan Exceptionalism”: the view that Alaska is fundamentally different from other states. A recent decision from the Supreme Court, Thompson v. Hebdon , may, however, weaken Alaska’s right to justify its reforms through an “exceptionalist” lens. The same decision suggests the Supreme Court is further narrowing its campaign finance jurisprudence more generally. Without these campaign finance limits, Alaskan politics may continue to be dominated by the oil and gas industry, the very problem those limits sought to address in the first place

Retaining Judicial Independence: Solutions To Increasing Threats To Alaska’S Judicial Merit System, Ryan Kuchinski Dec 2020

Retaining Judicial Independence: Solutions To Increasing Threats To Alaska’S Judicial Merit System, Ryan Kuchinski

Alaska Law Review

While the judicial merit system in Alaska has effectively balanced accountability with the competing need for independence in the judiciary, the growing trend of politicized retention elections threatens that independence. This Note examines the threat to the Alaskan judicial merit system, argues for the importance of protecting an independent judiciary, and proposes a number of potential solutions to reform or replace the current retention election system.

When Misrepresentation Becomes Deceptive: Analyzing Petition-Signer Inadvertence Post-Cambell, Melissa English, Daisy Gray Dec 2020

When Misrepresentation Becomes Deceptive: Analyzing Petition-Signer Inadvertence Post-Cambell, Melissa English, Daisy Gray

Alaska Law Review

In 2010, the Alaska supreme court held that a legally deficient petition summary of a ballot initiative could be corrected and put on the ballot without being recirculated for signatures. The Parental Involvement Initiative at the root of the litigation would prohibit doctors from performing abortions for unemancipated minor women who had not provided notice to or obtained consent from a parent. After the petition was circulated for signatures, the supreme court determined that omissions of fact in the petition summary rendered the summary inaccurate and therefore deficient. However, the court refused to require that the initiative sponsors recirculate the …

Impact Of Development-Induced Displacement On The Tribal Community, With Special Reference To The Women In Odisha, Debasree De

ASEAN Journal of Community Engagement

Anti-displacement movements are one of the burning issues in the current global scenario. Global south has been experiencing such widespread resistance since the inception of its anti-colonial struggle. Gender in this context has played a crucial part to make it a large-scale mass movement, as the women bear the brunt of displacement. It is chiefly because they have economic independence as they have customary rights over the communal property resources. Displacement has caused mental trauma for the adivasi women who end up being prostitutes to eke out livelihoods. In this background the present article seeks to explore the impact of …

Citizen Participation In Times Of Crisis: Understanding Participatory Budget During The Covid-19 Pandemic In Nepal, Thaneshwar Bhusal

ASEAN Journal of Community Engagement

This research assumes that various forms and scales of lockdowns and social distancing measures have limited local decision-makers’ ability to reach out to communities as part of their mandatory annual participatory budgeting processes. Building upon this proposition, this article assesses Nepal’s local budgeting process of 2020 to understand the degree to which it succeeded (or failed) in incorporating citizen’s voices in the annual handbook of local public policies and budgets. The research followed a qualitative case study research methodology. It generated interviews with participants including ordinary people, local politicians, and bureaucrats from 20 different municipalities and a federal ministry in …

Combating Covid-19 Infodemic In Nigerian Rural Communities: The Imperatives Of Traditional Communication Systems, Joseph M. Lucas, Tordue Simon Targema, Abubakar Jibril, Elkanah Obadiah Sambo, Bako Ali Istifanus

ASEAN Journal of Community Engagement

Since the outbreak of COVID-19 in December 2019, substantial attention has been devoted to combating the infodemic that has come to characterize it with the potential to prevent its effective containment. This is undoubtedly a very difficult task, especially in Nigerian rural communities that are characterized by severe lack of the requisite facilities to access information on modern media platforms, compounded by high illiteracy and poverty rates. This study presents a case for the utilization of people-oriented, traditional communication systems in combatting the infodemic at the grassroots level. It contends that, given the peculiarities of the country’s rural settlements, traditional …

ASEAN Journal of Community Engagement

Successful stories of community engagement existed during the Ebola disease outbreak in Liberia, indicating that a combination of government and community efforts are needed in addressing pandemics or epidemics. However, for communities to rise to the challenge of containing and combatting the spread of any disease, they must be communicated most effectively and supported by the government. Therefore, our study investigates how applicable successful community engagement has been in the charge against the Coronavirus disease 2019 (COVID-19) in Nigeria. Through telephone interviews, we sourced data from 12 community opinion leaders in Enugu State, Nigeria. After conducting a thematic analysis of …

Cadres’ Role In Posyandu Revitalization As Stunting Early Detection In Babakan Madang Sub-District, Bogor District, Nurul Dina Rahmawati, Ratu Ayu Dewi Sartika

ASEAN Journal of Community Engagement

Stunting, the inability to reach one's full potential, still remains common in Indonesia. As a result of stunting’s intergenerational consequences, many strategies have been conducted by both government and non-government organizations to tackle this issue, including nutrition-specific and sensitive interventions, with Integrated Health Service Post (Posyandu) revitalization as one of the key measures to provide valid, reliable, and up-to-date data to establish the early detection and management of stunting. Unfortunately, this role is sub-optimally performed due to the limited competence of the health volunteers (cadres) that correlates with the suppressed parents’ motivation to visit a Posyandu. Moreover, their …
