Ransomware - A Strategic Threat To Organizations, James Frost, Alan R. Hamlin

Mountain Plains Journal of Business and Technology

Ransomware is a strategic threat to government, business, and academic organizations. It has both short term and long term consequences, requiring strategic planning to create defenses, assess options, and create policies.

The purpose of the study is to answer three questions: What is the strategic risk of cyberattack to organizations? What are the current attitudes and practices of executives who are vulnerable to such threats? What are specific options that organizations should consider to prevent and deal with possible incidents in the future? The article is thus comprised of the following components: A) a history of the development and complexity …

Walmart Impact On The Finance And Insurance Industry, Steven C. Hall, Suzanne K. Hayes, Laurie Swinney Dec 2020

Walmart Impact On The Finance And Insurance Industry, Steven C. Hall, Suzanne K. Hayes, Laurie Swinney

Mountain Plains Journal of Business and Technology

Purpose

This paper investigates the effect of Walmart presence on professional service firms within the finance and insurance sector. This paper also discusses the finance and insurance industry’s place within the Walmart ripple effect—changed retail sector leads to changed professional support services resulting in altered levels of social capital within the community.

Design/Methodology

The study uses county-level data from the state of Nebraska to examine the relationship between cumulative Walmart exposure and the number of firms, number of employees, and payroll levels within the finance and insurance (F&I) sector. These same variables are also investigated within two specific F&I industries—insurance …

Monetary Impact Of National Exchange Carrier Association Tariffs On Internet Access Cost In Rural Areas, Tim Obermier, Angela K. Hollman Dec 2020

Monetary Impact Of National Exchange Carrier Association Tariffs On Internet Access Cost In Rural Areas, Tim Obermier, Angela K. Hollman

Mountain Plains Journal of Business and Technology

This study examines the monetary impact of tariffs on consumer internet access via a digital subscriber line (DSL). Historically, the Communications Act of 1934 mandated that telephony services be provided to everyone, without exclusion. With the rapid emergence of the internet, the Connect America Fund was recently implemented to ensure equal access to both voice and broadband services. Since many telephony companies have emerged as internet service providers, DSL internet service is often bundled together with a landline telephone, especially in rural areas. This study examines the total cost of such bundled DSL internet service across the classes of cities …

Covid-19 & Pregnancy Complication During Early Pandemic: A Narrative Review, Ahmed A. Eladely, Maria Hill, Ahmed Abdelhaleem, Zahid Imran, Ahsan M. Khan, Daisy Sangroula

The University of Louisville Journal of Respiratory Infections

Background: Coronaviruses have caused three outbreaks in the past two decades. The novel one is SARS-COV-2, which causes COVID-19. Pregnant women have a somewhat altered immune state, which may make them more vulnerable to COVID-19 and its complications. Extensive research is needed to better understand the clinical course of COVID-19 in this population. This review article discusses the comparison of SARS-CoV-2 with previous coronavirus outbreaks, clinical presentations, and complications in pregnant women and newborns.

Methods: We conducted a literature search for case series and case reports about pregnancy outcomes in pregnant women with COVID-19 during the early phase of pandemic. …

Mortgage Discrimination And District Manipulation: Deterrents To Minority Mobility, Megan M. Rice Dec 2020

Mortgage Discrimination And District Manipulation: Deterrents To Minority Mobility, Megan M. Rice

Honors Theses

This paper explores the relationship between gerrymandering and home loan discrimination. Gerrymandering, the process of manipulating district plans for political gain, and discrimination in mortgage lending are both illegal; and yet, they still occur in today’s society. By using individual loan application data from the HMDA’s website, a series of regressions will be run using applicant characteristics to measure loan discrimination at the state level. Once a state level model has been constructed, a measure of gerrymandering called the Efficiency Gap will be added into the regression in order to explore the relationship between home loan discrimination and gerrymandering. Regression …

Emotional Reactivity And Regulation In Preschool-Age Children Who Do And Do Not Stutter: Evidence From Autonomic Nervous System Measures, Victoria Tumanova, Blair Wilder, Julia Gregoire, Michaela Baratta, Rachel Razza Dec 2020

Emotional Reactivity And Regulation In Preschool-Age Children Who Do And Do Not Stutter: Evidence From Autonomic Nervous System Measures, Victoria Tumanova, Blair Wilder, Julia Gregoire, Michaela Baratta, Rachel Razza

Communication Sciences and Disorders - All Scholarship

Purpose: This experimental cross-sectional research study examined the emotional reactivity and emotion regulation in preschool-age children who do (CWS) and do not stutter (CWNS) by assessing their psychophysiological response during rest and while viewing pictures from the International Affective Picture System (Lang et al., 2008). Method: Participants were 18 CWS (16 boys and two girls; mean age 4 years, 5 months) and 18 age- and gender-matched CWNS. Participants’ psychophysiological responses were measured during two baselines and two picture viewing conditions. Skin conductance level (SCL) and heart rate were measured to assess emotional reactivity. Respiratory sinus arrhythmia (RSA) was measured to …

Thermally Stable Fluorogenic Zn(Ii) Sensor Based On A Bis(Benzimidazole)Pyridine-Linked Phenyl-Silsesquioxane Polymer, Chamika U. Lenora, Nai-Hsuan Hu, Joseph C. Furgal

Chemistry Faculty Publications

A 2,6-bis(2-benzimidazolyl) pyridine-linked silsesquioxane-based semi-branched polymer was synthesized, and its photophysical and metal-sensing properties have been investigated. The polymer is thermally stable up to 285 °C and emits blue in both solid and solution state. The emission of the polymer is sensitive to pH and is gradually decreased and quenched upon protonation of the linkers. The initial emission color is recoverable upon deprotonation with triethylamine. The polymer also shows unique spectroscopic properties in both absorption and emission upon long-term UV irradiation, with red-shifted absorption and emission not present in a simple blended system of phenylsilsesquioxane and linker, suggesting that a …

Analyzing Dispatching Wave Policies For E-Commerce Logistics Based On The Multi-Agent-Based Simulation, Zhiqiang Niu, Chaoyang Li, Hongyu Dong, Zhang Feng, Lingyun Meng, Tong Lu, Shengnan Wu

Journal of System Simulation

Abstract: To provide superior on-line shopping experiences and maintain sustained profitability,e-commerce logistics companies need design an effective dispatching wave policy strategy to handle the tradeoff between the advantage of economies of scale and fast-pace delivery services.A multi-agent-based simulation framework is proposed, where business processes in logistics are built as different nodes in the simulation network.Case studies are conducted to test the order delivery process with various wave strategies in the Beijing metropolitan area.Experimental results show that situation-dependent wave strategies are sensitive to different patterns of online shopping demands.
