“My Computer Is My Castle”: New Privacy Frameworks To Regulate Police Hacking, Ivan Škorvánek, Bert-Jaap Koops, Bryce Clayton Newell, Andrew Roberts
BYU Law Review
Several countries have recently introduced laws allowing the police to hack into suspects’ computers. Legislators recognize that police hacking is highly intrusive to personal privacy but consider it justified by the increased use of encryption and mobile computing—both of which challenge traditional investigative methods. Police hacking also exemplifies a major challenge to the way legal systems deal with, and conceptualize, privacy. Existing conceptualizations of privacy and privacy rights do not always adequately address the types and degrees of intrusion into individuals’ private lives that police hacking powers enable.
Traditional privacy pillars such as the home and secrecy of communications do …

When faced with the challenge of defending someone accused of arson, counsel has several options but unless there is overwhelming evidence to indicate that this was in fact an arson, the first thing counsel should do is retain an expert. Arson is one of the few crimes for which it is necessary to first prove that a crime was committed. Over this author’s 45-year career, many false accusations of arson have resulted in either civil or criminal litigation. As stated in the 2009 National Academy of Sciences (NAS) report:
The simple reality is that the interpretation of forensic evidence is …

Revision And Thinking About Agent-Based Modeling Research To Group Violent Activity, Chen Peng, Jianguo Chen, Hongyong Yuan
Revision And Thinking About Agent-Based Modeling Research To Group Violent Activity, Chen Peng, Jianguo Chen, Hongyong Yuan
Journal of System Simulation
Abstract: The current work about Agent-based modeling research on group violent incidents was reviewed, which included the social science theory which undertakes the group violence simulation, the studies about Agent categorization, relationship modeling, Agent emotion production, adaptive decision-making process and evolution of complex behaviors. It was indicated that the constructing of Agent model experienced the process in which the Agent model transited from simplicity to more complexity, thus, focusing on individuality and heterogeneity's model construction which was integrated more on sociology and psychology would become a significant development trend. Following that, some suggestions and thinking which included the principle of …

As frustrations over inequalities in policing and law enforcement continue despite attempted reforms (Beckett, 2016), many are asking for a more effective approach. A 2018 issue statement from the American Public Health Association (2018) highlights that violence is a public health issue that will not go away without the influence of a public health approach. The integrated biological-psychological-social model of health recognizes the complexity in the ways individuals are influenced by their situations, with violence as the unfortunate result of the wrong mix of circumstances. The public health approach to violence focuses on prevention as part of the solution. This …

The Clery Act is a consumer protection law intended to protect students by forcing institutions of higher education to be transparent about campus crime, as the concern is that many colleges and universities are underreporting or nonreporting campus crime statistics. This study included two research questions. The first question, “What are the common themes determined in the audits concerning Clery Act violations for two-year schools?,” was addressed by conducting a deductive content analysis by reviewing each U.S. Department of Education (USDOEd) Clery Act compliance audit in the research sample. The USDOEd, Federal Aid Data Center’s public database, was the source …
Safety Analysis Of Off-Highway Vehicles Use Within Public Rights-Of-Way In Alaska, Tristan Sayre
Safety Analysis Of Off-Highway Vehicles Use Within Public Rights-Of-Way In Alaska, Tristan Sayre
Engineering
Many Alaskans own and operate off-highway vehicles (OHVs) for recreational purposes or for use as primary and secondary modes of transportation. However, the reported crash rate shows that 80 on-road crashes, resulting in five fatalities, occur each year statewide. As a result, the use of OHVs has been identified as a safety concern in the Alaska State Highway Safety Improvement Plan. Minimal research dedicated to understanding OHV use in Alaska exists which limits the potential for improvements that address safety concerns in an equitable fashion. The research presented here contributes to better understanding of on-road OHV use through observational and …
Measles, Movements And Medical Exemptions: How California Learned To Lead The Way, Joseph Bishop
Measles, Movements And Medical Exemptions: How California Learned To Lead The Way, Joseph Bishop
Madison Historical Review
In 2000, the United States celebrated the elimination of measles. Yet within twenty years, measles epidemics had sprung up throughout the country. This article examines the factors responsible for measles’ return to the United States and argues for a state policy that effectively reduces potential outbreaks. The growing anti-vaccination movement and vaccine misinformation largely account for the increase in vaccine hesitancy, leading to measles epidemics. California’s Senate Bill 277, a school-entry vaccination policy, demonstrates how withholding religious and philosophical exemptions increased vaccination rates in unprotected communities. By decreasing vaccine hesitancy with effective vaccine exemption policies, the United States can be …
