How Facets Of Work Illuminate Sociotechnical Challenges Of Industry 5.0, Steven Alter
How Facets Of Work Illuminate Sociotechnical Challenges Of Industry 5.0, Steven Alter
Business Analytics and Information Systems
This conceptual contribution explains how the idea of “facets of work” can refocus traditional sociotechnical concerns to increase their relevance in increasingly automated and digitalized workplaces far removed from situations studied by early sociotechnical researchers. A background section summarizes how the sociotechnical approach seems pervasive but possibly outdated in some ways. It explains how the idea of “facets of work” emerged from attempting to bring richer, more evocative ide-as to systems analysis and design. Focusing on facets of work during initial discussions of requirements could provide guidance without jumping prematurely to precision and notation needed for producing technical artifacts. Tables …
Public Maladministration: The Ubiquitous Menace To Government Performance, Gerald E. Caiden, Naomi J. Caiden
Public Maladministration: The Ubiquitous Menace To Government Performance, Gerald E. Caiden, Naomi J. Caiden
Faculty Journal Articles
This essay, based on a lifetime’s research together around the world, focuses on the dark side of government: the wrongdoing of public officials that frustrate the efforts of humanity to better itself and to strive for perfection. It dwells on what goes needlessly wrong in public affairs - its failures and harmful actions, not its successes and achievements. All over the world people are increasingly upset with the performance of public authorities when misdeeds are hidden by confined blameworthy inner circles sworn to a secrecy enforced by public instruments, until they are eventually exposed to the public eye too late …

Understanding The Distinctive Presentations Of Therapist Countertransference With Cluster B Personality Disorders, Sara Ashley Florence
Understanding The Distinctive Presentations Of Therapist Countertransference With Cluster B Personality Disorders, Sara Ashley Florence
Theses and Dissertations
Countertransference is one of several therapist variables that have been demonstrated to impact the quality of the therapeutic alliance. CT that is understood and managed by the therapist has the potential to serve as a tool in better understanding the patient, which puts the therapist in a better position to intervene therapeutically. CT that are emotionally charged can be more difficult to manage, and CT reactions tend to be especially emotionally intense when working with patients with Cluster B personality disorders (PDs). A better understanding of specific CT reactions to each Cluster B PD might aid in diagnosis and treatment …

Therapeutic Autoethnography: From Epiphany To Catharsis, Kelsey Railsback
Department of Family Therapy Dissertations and Applied Clinical Projects
A large percentage of the U.S. population has been directly or indirectly affected by sexual violence. The Rape, Abuse, and Incest National Network (2020b) reported 433,648 victims annually, and Dillinger (2018) reported 747,408 registered sex offenders living in the United States. As a victim-survivor of sexual violence, I have a unique narrative in that I chose to work therapeutically with sexual offenders. Reactions from my family, friends, and colleagues have varied from surprise to alarm, but I hope this dissertation inspires readers to take a second look. Readers who are mental health professionals may consequently be motivated to work with …

Shifts In Micromobility-Related Trauma In The Age Of Vehicle Sharing: The Epidemiology Of Head Injury, Joshua Richard Feler
Shifts In Micromobility-Related Trauma In The Age Of Vehicle Sharing: The Epidemiology Of Head Injury, Joshua Richard Feler
Yale Medicine Thesis Digital Library
Shared micromobility programs (SMPs) provide access to a distributed set of shared vehicles – mostly conventional bicycles, electronic bicycles, and electronic scooters – and are increasingly common in domestic and global cities, with riders completing an estimated 84 million trips using an SMP vehicle. There is heterogeneity in these programs in size, vehicle types offered, and distribution model. The impact of SMP introduction on the epidemiology of traumatic injury is largely unknown, and the relative safety of different shared vehicle types has not been evaluated; these effects are the subject of this study.
Considered as a whole, the annual number …
2016 Assessment Of Idaho's Transportation Infrastructure And Funding, Idaho Policy Institute
2016 Assessment Of Idaho's Transportation Infrastructure And Funding, Idaho Policy Institute
Idaho Policy Institute Reports
Idaho’s transportation system and infrastructure are vital to the state’s economy. Transportation infrastructure can help spur responsible growth in terms of employment, job creation, business retention, and property development. However, Idaho, like most states, is facing critical issues in its transportation system. Declining revenues and escalating debt service will reduce Idaho’s ability to maintain its transportation infrastructure in a state of good repair. Ultimately, without adequate investment in its transportation system, Idaho’s economy and its people will be negatively impacted. Yet Idahoans are not aware of the deteriorating transportation system or the negative consequences of underfunding it. By engaging the …

Race Decriminalization And Criminal Legal System Reform, Michael Pinard
Race Decriminalization And Criminal Legal System Reform, Michael Pinard
Faculty Scholarship
There is emerging consensus that various components of the criminal legal system have gone too far in capturing and punishing masses of Black men, women, and children. This evolving recognition has helped propel important and pathbreaking criminal legal reforms in recent years, with significant bipartisan support. These reforms have targeted the criminal legal system itself. They strive to address the pain inflicted by the system. However, by concerning themselves solely with the criminal legal system, these reforms do not confront the reality that Black men, women, and children will continue to be devastatingly overrepresented in each stitch of the system. …
Race, Surveillance, Resistance, Chaz Arnett
Race, Surveillance, Resistance, Chaz Arnett
Faculty Scholarship
The increasing capability of surveillance technology in the hands of law enforcement is radically changing the power, size, and depth of the surveillance state. More daily activities are being captured and scrutinized, larger quantities of personal and biometric data are being extracted and analyzed, in what is becoming a deeply intensified and pervasive surveillance society. This reality is particularly troubling for Black communities, as they shoulder a disproportionate share of the burden and harm associated with these powerful surveillance measures, at a time when traditional mechanisms for accountability have grown weaker. These harms include the maintenance of legacies of state …

Bioethical Issues In Genome Editing By Crispr-Cas9 Technology, Fatma Betül Ayanoğlu, Ayşe Eser Elçi̇n, Yaşar Murat Elçi̇n
Turkish Journal of Biology
Genome editing technologies have led to fundamental changes in genetic science. Among them, CRISPR-Cas9 technology particularly stands out due to its advantages such as easy handling, high accuracy, and low cost. It has made a quick introduction in fields related to humans, animals, and the environment, while raising difficult questions, applications, concerns, and bioethical issues to be discussed. Most concerns stem from the use of CRISPR-Cas9 to genetically alter human germline cells and embryos (called germline genome editing). Germline genome editing leads to serial bioethical issues, such as the occurrence of undesirable changes in the genome, from whom and how …
Taking A Knee To “Whiteness” In Urban Teacher Education: An Abolitionist Stance, Anne Auburn Sheaffer
Taking A Knee To “Whiteness” In Urban Teacher Education: An Abolitionist Stance, Anne Auburn Sheaffer
ETD Archive
In a qualitative narrative study of 11 urban teacher education faculty who teach courses that prepare teacher candidates for field immersions in metro-urban schools, I problematized “whiteness” by asking participants what it meant to them in the contexts of their work in contact zones were teacher candidates and K-12 students meet. The research was shaped as an abolitionist justice project (Tuck & Yang, 2018, p. 8) and considered how “whiteness” might be deconstructed and decentered in urban teacher education. Participants described whiteness as both fixed phenotype and historical and social construct which causes harm and which requires intervention. In scenarios …
