Masters Theses

The purpose of the study was to examine what challenges Black African graduate students face when adjusting to life in the United States. A secondary concern was to examine what coping strategies were used during the transition. A qualitative approach was used to interview the participants and through coding, develop themes related to their time as graduate students.

This study concluded that there were a number of issues that Black African graduate students face. The students reported that they experienced homesickness, culture shock, and discrimination during their time at school. Specific themes also emerged as to how they coped with …

Panhellenic Women's Leadership Development And Self-Efficacy, Caitlyn Gastfield Jan 2020

Panhellenic Women's Leadership Development And Self-Efficacy, Caitlyn Gastfield

Masters Theses

Substantial research has been done on self-efficacy as well as a growing amount of research on women in leadership. This qualitative study examined the perceived relationship between leadership development opportunities given to Panhellenic women and their perceived level of self-efficacy. Three semi-structured interviews were conducted at a regional, mid-sized institution in the Midwest with undergraduate women holding leadership positions in their respective Panhellenic organizations. The results found in this study support many of the previous findings in research in relation to the importance of leadership development and self-efficacy. Many types of leadership development opportunities emerged, from informal peer support to …

The Path To Persistence: How Highly-At-Risk Students Persevere To Graduation Day, Alexis Kaine Straub Jan 2020

The Path To Persistence: How Highly-At-Risk Students Persevere To Graduation Day, Alexis Kaine Straub

Masters Theses

This phenomenological study looked at highly-at-risk college seniors who exhibited four out of the eight risk factors defined by the institution where the study took place. The purpose was to gain insight into how highly-at-risk college seniors persist to graduation by discovering what protective factors they utilized in their college career as well as the role resiliency and/or grit may have played. The participants were five undergraduate students who were enrolled at a mid-sized, public university in the rural Midwest. They responded to questions in one semi-structured interview designed to capture their experiences about college starting from high school until …

Important Factors Influencing Attendance At Northwoods League Games, Ryan Eiche Jan 2020

Important Factors Influencing Attendance At Northwoods League Games, Ryan Eiche

Masters Theses

The purpose of this study was to examine the importance of various factors as they related to attendance at Northwoods League baseball games. This league was an ideal fit for the study as little research has been conducted on this level of baseball. A survey was sent out via the Facebook page of the Lakeshore Chinooks to gather responses from fans on what factors encouraged attendance. Fans were asked to then rate how important each factor was on a five-point sliding scale. The research revealed that situational factors such as convenience, day and time, and weather of the game were …

Aging Techniques & Population Dynamics Of Blue Suckers (Cycleptus Elongatus) In The Lower Wabash River, Dakota S. Radford Jan 2020

Aging Techniques & Population Dynamics Of Blue Suckers (Cycleptus Elongatus) In The Lower Wabash River, Dakota S. Radford

Masters Theses

The Blue Sucker, Cycleptus elongatus, occurs in large rivers primarily in the Mississippi River basin. Their imperiled status has called attention to the need for its management and protection. Estimating age is crucial for directing management, but past studies have varied in their choice of hard structure, resulting in uncertainty regarding the basic life history of this species. Because the Wabash River Blue Sucker population may be one of few surveyable populations with high abundance and successful reproduction, their demographics can provide a benchmark against which threatened populations can be compared. We harvested Blue Suckers (n = 168) …

Homicidal Loss And Disenfranchised Grief, Mothers Of Murdered Descendants: An Exploratory Qualitative Study, Michael Wayne Eagle Jan 2020

Homicidal Loss And Disenfranchised Grief, Mothers Of Murdered Descendants: An Exploratory Qualitative Study, Michael Wayne Eagle

Theses and Dissertations

Violent acts of homicide committed against youth or children can lead to prolonged, devastating, and painful effects on their surviving mothers. Sudden unexpected deaths of descendants can lead to anger, guilt, sorrow, and isolation affecting survivors both emotionally and physically. Descendants’ deaths before the mothers’ deaths are unnatural and can lead to a decline in a survivor’s social actions, a rise in hospitalization rates, higher cases of mortality, complicated grief, and symptoms of PTSD. Cases of disenfranchised grief can surface after a survivor’s loss is ignored or no longer culturally allowed. Instances of empathic failure can result when empathy from …

It Might Not Matter Very Much Whether Insects Are Conscious, Neil Levy Jan 2020

It Might Not Matter Very Much Whether Insects Are Conscious, Neil Levy

Animal Sentience

In common with most other authors, Mikhalevich & Powell assume that phenomenal consciousness is a “precondition” of moral standing. Although the evidence they present makes it much more likely than usually thought that arthropods are phenomenally conscious, scepticism in the face of this evidence remains intellectually respectable. I suggest that we best make progress here by rejecting the notion that phenomenal consciousness is necessary for moral standing. Mental states that may lack phenomenal properties can do a lot of work in grounding moral standing, and there is less room for scepticism about these mental states than about phenomenal consciousness.

The Impact Of Cannabis Access Laws On Opioid Prescribing, W. Kip Viscusi, Benjamin J. Mcmichael, R. Lawrence Van Horn Jan 2020

The Impact Of Cannabis Access Laws On Opioid Prescribing, W. Kip Viscusi, Benjamin J. Mcmichael, R. Lawrence Van Horn

Vanderbilt Law School Faculty Publications

While recent research has shown that cannabis access laws can reduce the use of prescription opioids, the effect of these laws on opioid use is not well understood for all dimensions of use and for the general United States population. Analyzing a dataset of over 1.5 billion individual opioid prescriptions between 2011 and 2018, which were aggregated to the individual provider-year level, we find that recreational and medical cannabis access laws reduce the number of morphine milligram equivalents prescribed each year by 11.8 and 4.2 percent, respectively. These laws also reduce the total days’ supply of opioids prescribed, the total …

Encomium For Karen Rothenberg, Ellen W. Clayton Jan 2020

Encomium For Karen Rothenberg, Ellen W. Clayton

Vanderbilt Law School Faculty Publications

Karen is also a zealous advocate in the very best sense of the word. After Struewing's article appeared, she wrote an editorial that appeared in multiple newspapers arguing that women with these variants should not lose their insurance. She became deeply involved in the National Action Plan for Breast Cancer, a powerful grass roots organization. Additionally, she became involved at the National Institutes of Health and addressed, often in leadership roles, such issues to develop strategies to prevent genetic discrimination for individuals with variants that increased the risk of developing cancer, to create tools to obtain meaningful informed consent for …

Unjust Timing Limitations In Genetic Malpractice, Ellen W. Clayton, Gary Marchant, Bonnie Leroy, Lauren Clatch Jan 2020

Unjust Timing Limitations In Genetic Malpractice, Ellen W. Clayton, Gary Marchant, Bonnie Leroy, Lauren Clatch

Vanderbilt Law School Faculty Publications

As genomic data are increasingly being collected and applied in clinical care, physicians, laboratories, and other health care providers are more frequently being sued for alleged medical malpractice or negligence. Because the genetic underpinnings of an existing or future health condition may not be immediately apparent, such cases sometimes raise unique timing issues involving the applicable statute of limitations, statute of repose, or statutory notification requirements. Although these timing limitations on when a lawsuit can be brought have important policy rationales and justifications, such as helping to protect providers from open-ended liability, their application to genetic liability cases may sometimes …

Unraveling Williams V. Illinois, Edward K. Cheng, Cara C. Mannion Jan 2020

Unraveling Williams V. Illinois, Edward K. Cheng, Cara C. Mannion

Vanderbilt Law School Faculty Publications

This Essay addresses one of the key evidentiary problems facing courts today: the treatment of forensic reports under the Confrontation Clause. Forensics are a staple of modern criminal trials, yet what restrictions the Confrontation Clause places on forensic reports is entirely unclear. The Supreme Court’s latest decision on the issue, Williams v. Illinois, sowed widespread confusion among lower courts and commentators, and during the 2018 Term, Justices Gorsuch and Kagan dissented to the denial of certiorari in Stuart v. Alabama, a case that would have revisited (and hopefully clarified) Williams.

Our Essay dispels the confusion in Williams v. Illinois. …

(What We Talk About When We Talk About) Judicial Temperament, Terry A. Maroney Jan 2020

(What We Talk About When We Talk About) Judicial Temperament, Terry A. Maroney

Vanderbilt Law School Faculty Publications

Judicial temperament is simultaneously the thing we think all judges must have and the thing that no one can quite put a finger on. Extant accounts are scattered and thin, and either present a laundry list of desirable judicial qualities without articulating what (if anything) unifies the list or treat temperament as a fundamentally mysterious quality that a judge either does or does not have. Resting so much—selection, evaluation, discipline, even removal—on such an indeterminate concept is intellectually and practically intolerable. Polarized debates over Justice Kavanaugh’s fitness to sit on the Supreme Court made clear just how badly we need …

Our Kardashian Court (And How To Fix It), Suzanna Sherry Jan 2020

Our Kardashian Court (And How To Fix It), Suzanna Sherry

Vanderbilt Law School Faculty Publications

The Supreme Court is broken. After cataloging its dysfunctions, this Article suggests a contributing cause and proposes a solution. The contributing cause is that Justices have become celebrities, and, like other celebrities, play to their fan base. The solution is to limit their opportunities to use their official status to do so: Congress should pass a law prohibiting concurring or dissenting opinions and requiring each case to be decided by an unsigned opinion that does not disclose the number of Justices who join it. The Article outlines the advantages of such a law and considers possible objections to it, including …

When Mini-Publics And Maxi-Publics Coincide: Ireland’S National Debate On Abortion, David M. Farrell, Jane Suiter, Kevin Cunningham, Clodagh Harris

Other resources

Empirical research on deliberative democracy has moved through a series of stages, the most recent of which has entailed the study of real world deliberative mini-publics – small groups of randomly selected citizens, operating according to deliberative principles (including facilitated small-group discussions) and tasked with considering one or a number of important policy, institutional or constitutional reform issues (e.g. Elstub, 2010, 2014; Goodin & Dryzek, 2006). Among the various forms of DMPs citizens’ assemblies are seen as ‘democratically superior’ (Elstub, 2014, p. 172). As Graham Smith (2009) notes ‘[n]o other randomly selected body has been given the level of influence …

When Mini-Publics And Maxi-Publics Coincide: Ireland’S National Debate On Abortion, David M. Farrell, Jane Suiter, Kevin Cunningham, Clodagh Harris

Articles

Ireland’s Citizens’ Assembly (CA) of 2016–18 was tasked with making recommendations on abortion. This paper shows that from the outset its members were in large part in favour of the liberalisation of abortion (though a fair proportion were undecided), that over the course of its deliberations the CA as a whole moved in a more liberal direction on the issue, but that its position was largely reflected in the subsequent referendum vote by the population as a whole.

Students’ Perspectives And Engagement Transforming Newly Acquired Knowledge To Long-Term Memory Utilizing The Deliberate Practice Framework, Kathleen Mae Fischer, Taran Thomas Williams, Joseph David Hannigan

Pedagogicon Conference Proceedings

As students progress through their college years, they face the task of acquiring large volumes of information from a variety of classes. Many educative and psychological associations have proven that student performance is directly affected by the student perspective and the amount of engagement with each exercise. The greater the effort a student invests in the exercise, the greater the classroom performance quality. The results demonstrate better long-term memory while utilizing the deliberate practice framework through repetition. For our exercise, we started by administering a brief survey to assess students’ perspectives, confidence levels and engagement preferences. Students were encouraged to …

Use Of Visual Imagery As An Alternative To Traditional Written Assignments, Geela Spira Jan 2020

Use Of Visual Imagery As An Alternative To Traditional Written Assignments, Geela Spira

Pedagogicon Conference Proceedings

Use of alternatives to written methodology for pedagogical coursework is worth investigating as students increase use of visual means in their social media communications. When offered a choice, a full 61% of students report preferring visual video feedback over written feedback. Use of a visual imagery method, named PhotoVoice was used to reconstruct a written assignment in an Occupational Science and Occupational Therapy curriculum. The specific methodology included use of auto-photography where students photographed their daily occupations. Photo elicitation was used to extract meanings from the visual images. 54 students photographed their daily occupations and routines over a 2-4 week …

Basic Course Leadership: Operational Transparency As A Best Practice For Adjunct Faculty Management, Krista M. Kimmel, Jennifer L. Fairchild, John Strada Jan 2020

Basic Course Leadership: Operational Transparency As A Best Practice For Adjunct Faculty Management, Krista M. Kimmel, Jennifer L. Fairchild, John Strada

Pedagogicon Conference Proceedings

Research suggests adjunct faculty receive little institutional support and feel a sense of disconnection from their campuses. Nearly half of all faculty at American colleges and universities are classified as adjunct faculty in recent National Center for Educational Statistics reporting. Thus, academic departments should consider strategies to better include and engage adjunct faculty on their campuses. This article explores transparency as a best practice for the administration of communication basic courses at a mid-sized, regional university. Further, adjunct faculty members’ perceptions of the basic course administrators’ transparency will be discussed.

Educators Guiding Students With Different Cognitive Levels Through Complex Assignments At Any Educative Level, Kathleen Mae Fischer, Taran Thomas Williams, Joseph David Hannigan

Pedagogicon Conference Proceedings

Students often need guidance to recognize the techniques necessary to complete complex assignments. The challenge that educators face is choosing the appropriate teaching method for students of different cognitive levels. We utilized the critical thinking framework and repetitive practice models in preclinical and clinical courses. These forms of teaching have been utilized and acknowledged in numerous disciplines for years. For our exercise, we started by administering a brief survey to assess the students perceptions, learning preferences and confidence levels. Next we assessed the students’ cognitive levels by utilizing 3 calibrated cases and graded the responses with a 1-5 point Likert …

Pregnancy, Femicide, And The Indispensability Of Legalizing Abortion: A Comparison Between Argentina And Ireland, Agustina M. Buedo Jan 2020

Pregnancy, Femicide, And The Indispensability Of Legalizing Abortion: A Comparison Between Argentina And Ireland, Agustina M. Buedo

Emory International Law Review

On August 9, 2018, after 16 hours of deliberation, Argentina’s senate narrowly rejected the “Interrupción Voluntaria del Embarazo” bill that would have allowed women the right to terminate their pregnancy during the first 14 weeks. Argentine law currently considers abortion a crime with the exception of two narrowly defined circumstances that are rarely applied. The legalization of abortion is vitally important to the women in Argentina who face an increased risk of femicide. Femicide rates in Latin America are among the highest in the world. Femicide can be linked specifically to pregnant women who could not get an abortion and …

E-Cigarette Use Among Youth In Iowa, Miranda Kieler Jan 2020

E-Cigarette Use Among Youth In Iowa, Miranda Kieler

Selected Social Change Portfolios in Prevention, Intervention, and Consultation

Electronic cigarettes or electronic nicotine delivery products are battery-operated, heating elements that individuals use to inhale nicotine products rather than traditional cigarettes or cigars (Center for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC), 2020). E-cigarettes can also be used to inhale illicit drugs such as marijuana. Electronic cigarettes can resemble traditional cigarettes, cigars, or pipes, while other products may look like pens, USB sticks, or mods (larger tanks) (CDC, 2020). The e-cigarettes have an atomizer or heating element that helps individuals inhale liquid nicotine vapors. Electronic cigarettes were developed as a potential health tobacco cessation product and thought to reduce the health …

Preventing Opioid Addiction In Buncombe County, North Carolina, Rachel Franquemont Jan 2020

Preventing Opioid Addiction In Buncombe County, North Carolina, Rachel Franquemont

Selected Social Change Portfolios in Prevention, Intervention, and Consultation

Opioid addiction is a significant health problem in Buncombe County, North Carolina. Opioid addiction can result in death from overdoses, economic hardship including high costs for treatment, decreased work productivity, and legal involvement (NIDA, n.d.). Mental health issues including opioid addiction are widespread and therefore difficult and costly to help all those afflicted. It has been shown that in the United States fifty percent of people will have at least one diagnosable mental health issue in their lifetime. In addition, 6 out of 10 of these will be moderate to severe (Conyne, Horne, & Raczynski, 2013). Therefore, prevention is a …

Societal Impacts Of Sports Betting In Colorado, Lawerence Wall Jr. Jan 2020

Societal Impacts Of Sports Betting In Colorado, Lawerence Wall Jr.

Selected Social Change Portfolios in Prevention, Intervention, and Consultation

Sports betting has become legal in many states across the Unites States after the Murphy v. National Collegiate Athletic Association United States Supreme Court case was ruled in favor of the former New Jersey Governor Chris Christie on May 14, 2018. This case overturned the Professional and Amateur Sports Protection Act (PASPA), allowing state-sponsored sports betting. PASPA was passed by Congress in 1992 to prohibit state-sanctioned sports gambling, except in four states: Delaware, Montana, Nevada, and Oregon, which already established legal sports betting regulations. New Jersey failed to apply in 1991 to be added to the list of exempt states …

Obesity Prevention In Morrow County, Oregon, Chris Humphreys Jan 2020

Obesity Prevention In Morrow County, Oregon, Chris Humphreys

Selected Social Change Portfolios in Prevention, Intervention, and Consultation

Morrow County, Oregon, is a county located in the north central part of Oregon, right along the Columbia River. The county’s industrial profile is a mix between large agricultural producers, longtime family ranches, and major tech companies like Amazon and Facebook. The largest town, Boardman, only has a population of around 3400 persons (2018), with several other smaller towns making up the rest of the county. Many of the subjects who work in Morrow County commute from several larger towns in adjacent counties. One result of this is that there are no open-to-the-public fitness clubs in Morrow County. Any access …
