International Journal of Speleology

This study is focussed on the geomorphological characterization and the processes driving the evolution of the highest karst system in Western Europe, which is located in the Ordesa and Monte Perdido National Park (PNOMP), in the central-southern Pyrenees. The karst system does not seem to have a well-developed epikarst. The studied area shows a karst network of polygenic branchwork type in the vadose zone. Additionally, the explored karst conduits in the epiphreatic zone show a water table cave pattern that is different to the looping one, which is the expected cave pattern development for a karst located in a mountain …

It is often the case with new technologies that it is very hard to predict their long-term impacts and as a result, although new technology may be beneficial in the short term, it can still cause problems in the longer term. This is what happened with oil by-products in different areas: the use of plastic as a disposable material did not take into account the hundreds of years necessary for its decomposition and its related long-term environmental damage. Data is said to be the new oil. The message to be conveyed is associated with its intrinsic value. But as in …

Peer Influence In Initiation To Heroin Use, Barbara J. Costello, Bradley J. Anderson, Michael Stein Dec 2020

Peer Influence In Initiation To Heroin Use, Barbara J. Costello, Bradley J. Anderson, Michael Stein

Sociology and Anthropology Faculty Publications

Much research on heroin initiation shows that most people use heroin initially with friends or family. However, there is little research examining why those who use heroin would initiate others to its use, and conversely, whether and why one might try to prevent initial heroin use in others. Following recent work on peer influence on crime and delinquency, we test the hypothesis that those with higher levels of self-control are less likely to initiate others to heroin use and are more likely to try to prevent others from using for the first time. The sample included 370 persons entering an …

Diet, Exercise, Lifestyle, And Mental Distress Among Young And Mature Men And Women: A Repeated Cross-Sectional Study, Lina Begdache, Saloumeh Sadeghzadeh, Gia Derose, Cassandra Abrams Dec 2020

Diet, Exercise, Lifestyle, And Mental Distress Among Young And Mature Men And Women: A Repeated Cross-Sectional Study, Lina Begdache, Saloumeh Sadeghzadeh, Gia Derose, Cassandra Abrams

Health & Wellness Studies Faculty Scholarship

Customization of mental health therapies needs to consider the differences in degree of brain maturity between young (18–29 years) and mature (30 years or older) adults as well as brain morphology among men and women. The aim of this study was to identify the significant dietary

and lifestyle contributors to mental distress in these sub-populations. Independent repeated cross- sectional sampling was performed for over a 5-year period (2014–2019) to collect data from different

populations at different time-points and seasons. A backward stepwise regression analysis was used on 2628 records. Mental distress in young women was associated with high consumption of …

Modulation Of Late Pleistocene Enso Strength By The Tropical Pacific Thermocline, Gerald T. Rustic, Pratigya J. Polissar, Ana Christina Ravelo, Sarah M. White

School of Earth & Environment Departmental Research

The El Niño Southern Oscillation (ENSO) is highly dependent on coupled atmosphere-ocean interactions and feedbacks, suggesting a tight relationship between ENSO strength and background climate conditions. However, the extent to which background climate state determines ENSO behavior remains in question. Here we present reconstructions of total variability and El Niño amplitude from individual foraminifera distributions at discrete time intervals over the past ~285,000 years across varying atmospheric CO2 levels, global ice volume and sea level, and orbital insolation forcing. Our results show a strong correlation between eastern tropical Pacific Ocean mixed-layer thickness and both El Niño amplitude and central Pacific …

A Sea Of Trouble: The Threat Of Rising Sea Level In New York City, Claudia Kay Keech

Student Theses 2015-Present

Sea levels have been rising steadily due to earth’s increasing surface temperature, and they are becoming extremely detrimental to coastal areas, such as New York City. This paper addresses the negative impacts that sea level rise will have on coastal communities and psychological damage it may cause. Additionally, it will discuss sustainable design that will allow these communities to adapt to and mitigate the issue of sea level rise, as well as other policy recommendations to further combat this issue. The introduction illustrates the reality of the citizens of these coastal communities and how their homes and jobs are at …

Leveraging The Inductive Bias Of Large Language Models For Abstract Textual Reasoning, Christopher Michael Rytting Dec 2020

Leveraging The Inductive Bias Of Large Language Models For Abstract Textual Reasoning, Christopher Michael Rytting

Theses and Dissertations

Large natural language models (such as GPT-2 or T5) demonstrate impressive abilities across a range of general NLP tasks. Here, we show that the knowledge embedded in such models provides a useful inductive bias, not just on traditional NLP tasks, but also in the nontraditional task of training a symbolic reasoning engine. We observe that these engines learn quickly and generalize in a natural way that reflects human intuition. For example, training such a system to model block-stacking might naturally generalize to stacking other types of objects because of structure in the real world that has been partially captured by …

Effect Of Aggregates On Early Age Flexural Strength And Maturity Predictions., A. Heniegal Dec 2020

Effect Of Aggregates On Early Age Flexural Strength And Maturity Predictions., A. Heniegal

Mansoura Engineering Journal

This article discusses early age flexural strength development in concrete, specifically investigating the role of aggregates and their impact in maturity predictions. The maturity method is becoming more widely used by the construction industry to signal when certain construction operations (e.g., opening to traffic or removing formwork) can be performed. In addition, the maturity method is used in various computer programs to simulate how physical properties develop during hydration. The maturity method is based on the concept that strength (or mechanical property development is proportional to the extent of chemical reaction (i.e., hydration) that has taken place. It is commonly …

African Land Mammal Ages, John Van Couvering, Eric Delson Dec 2020

African Land Mammal Ages, John Van Couvering, Eric Delson

Publications and Research

We define 17 African land mammal ages, or AFLMAs, covering the Cenozoic record of the Afro-arabian continent, the planet’s second largest land mass. While fossiliferous deposits are absent on the eroded plateau of the continent’s interior, almost 800 fossil genera from over 350 locations have now been identified in coastal deposits, karst caves, and in the Neogene rift valleys. Given a well-developed geochronologic framework, together with continuing revision to the fossil record—both stimulated by the story of human evolution in Africa—and also to compensate for the variation in fossil ecosystems across such great distances, the AFLMAs are biochronological units defined …

Sediment Redistribution Beneath The Terminus Of An Advancing Glacier, Taku Glacier (T’Aakú Kwáan Sít’I), Alaska., Jenna M. Zechmann, Martin Truffer, R. J. Motyka, Jason M. Amundson, Christopher F. Larsen, N/A La Dec 2020

Sediment Redistribution Beneath The Terminus Of An Advancing Glacier, Taku Glacier (T’Aakú Kwáan Sít’I), Alaska., Jenna M. Zechmann, Martin Truffer, R. J. Motyka, Jason M. Amundson, Christopher F. Larsen, N/A La

Faculty, Staff, and Students

The recently-advancing Taku Glacier is excavating subglacial sediments at high rates over multidecadal timescales. However, sediment redistribution over shorter timescales remains unquantified. We use a variety of methods to study subglacial and proglacial sediment redistribution on decadal, seasonal, and daily timescales to gain insight into sub- and proglacial landscape formation. Both excavation and deposition were observed from 2003 to 2015 (2.8 ± 0.9ma−1 to +2.9 ± 0.9ma−1). The observed patterns imply that a subglacial conduit has occupied the same site over the past decade. Outwash fans on the subaerial end moraine experience fluvial sediment reworking almost year-round, with net sediment …
