The Self-Perceived Impact Of A Food Recovery-Meal Delivery Program On Homebound Seniors’ Food Security, Nutrition Health, And Well-Being, Alice Marie Sanchez
UNF Graduate Theses and Dissertations
For many senior citizens, meeting nutritional needs is essential to good health and daily function. Studies indicate that many American older adults are not meeting their nutrition needs and often suffer from food insecurity. Meals on Wings (MOW) is a food recovery-meal delivery program that attempts to decrease the influence of food insecurity among older adults. This study aims to explore the self-perceived impact of a food recovery-meal delivery program on homebound seniors’ nutrition health, food security, and well-being.
Semi-structured interviews were administered to adults age 55 and older on the waitlist for Meals on Wheels America in Duval County …

Serum Chemistry Values In Wild Black Vultures In Mississippi, Usa, Fred L. Cunningham, Sherman W. Jack, Amanda R. Deese, Eric R. Wengert, Kyle Van Why, Carla L. Huston, Scott Lemmons, Richard B. Minnis
Human–Wildlife Interactions
Vultures (Cathartidae and Accipitridae) play an important role in ecosystem balance by rapidly disposing animal carcasses and thus preventing the potential spread of pathogens. Blood chemistry values provide a means of assessing the health of wildlife and wild animal populations; however, there are significant differences in chemistries among species and when comparing captive and free-living New and Old World vultures. In 2007, we collected blood serum from 30 female and 14 male wild, healthy black vultures (Coragyps atratus) live-trapped by the U.S. Department of Agriculture, Animal and Plant Health Inspection Service, Wildlife Services from a power substation in …
Baboon And Vervet Monkey Crop-Foraging Behaviors On A Commercial South African Farm: Preliminary Implications For Damage Mitigation, Leah J. Findlay, Russell A. Hill
Baboon And Vervet Monkey Crop-Foraging Behaviors On A Commercial South African Farm: Preliminary Implications For Damage Mitigation, Leah J. Findlay, Russell A. Hill
Human–Wildlife Interactions
Conflict between crop farmers and wild nonhuman primates is a worldwide conservation issue of increasing concern. Most of the research on wild primate crop foraging has so far focused on the conflicts with subsistence agriculture. Crop damage caused by primate foraging in large-scale commercial agriculture is also a major facet of human–wildlife conflict. Despite its increasing severity, there are very few published accounts of on-farm wild primate crop-foraging behavior or effective techniques to deter primates from field crops on commercial farms. To address this knowledge gap and identify some mitigation strategies, we used direct observation from a hide to collect …
Influence Of Maternal Eating Attitudes, Behaviors, And Fat Talk On Adolescent, Non-Elite, Competitive-Level Gymnasts, Madisyn Rozner
Influence Of Maternal Eating Attitudes, Behaviors, And Fat Talk On Adolescent, Non-Elite, Competitive-Level Gymnasts, Madisyn Rozner
Graduate Research Theses & Dissertations
Adverse eating attitudes and eating behaviors describe thoughts and actions related to food and body image that increase risk for development for an eating disorder. The term, “fat talk” was defined as, “cultural meanings of talk about weight” and has been used to assess preoccupation with the cultural stigma of weight. Understanding risk factors for the development of adverse thoughts and actions in adolescence is especially important, as disordered cognitions and behaviors often appear in early adolescence. Maternal modeling, children modeling their actions or attitudes based on their mothers, plays a role in the level of risk. Similarly, gymnastics, an …
Understanding The Effects Of Food Security And Snap Participation On The Fruit And Vegetable Intake Of Older Adults, Alexandra Sarkisian
Understanding The Effects Of Food Security And Snap Participation On The Fruit And Vegetable Intake Of Older Adults, Alexandra Sarkisian
Graduate Research Theses & Dissertations
This thesis focuses on understanding what impact the barrier of food security has on the fruit and vegetable intake of older adults. Food insecurity - lacking consistent access to enough food for an active, healthy lifestyle - is an issue that affects 1 in 9 Americans, and can have an impact on one’s diet and potentially overall health. Using secondary data collected through the 2013-2014 National Health and Nutrition Examination Survey, this study assessed the intake of fruits, vegetables, as well as the variety of produce consumed. This was then analyzed in order determine how the intake of these foods …
Diet Of Spalangia Cameroni (Hymenoptera: Pteromalidae), A Parasitoid Of Filth Flies, Elizabeth Taylor
Diet Of Spalangia Cameroni (Hymenoptera: Pteromalidae), A Parasitoid Of Filth Flies, Elizabeth Taylor
Graduate Research Theses & Dissertations
Parasitoid wasps are often part of the rich invertebrate communities in decaying organic matter where their hosts are found. However, little is known about what adults of these parasitoids eat. Most parasitoid wasps parasitize herbaceous insects, so nectar from flowers often is readily available. The present study examined feeding by adult Spalangia cameroni Perkins (Hymenoptera: Pteromalidae), a species that burrows through manure, where it finds and parasitizes pupae of filth flies. Feeding on host fluids occurs in many parasitoid wasps, including S. cameroni. In the laboratory, these wasps also readily feed on honey or a sucrose solution, which increases their …

Bioinformatic Anlayses Of Identified But Uncultivated Microbial Dark Matter Organisms Using Archival Single Amplified Genomes (Sags), Daniel Adam Nuccio
Graduate Research Theses & Dissertations
This project characterizes two independent, previously undescribed microbial dark matter organisms from the candidate phyla JL-ETNP-Z39 and NBK19. These characterizations are based on seven single amplified genomes (SAGs) for JL-ETNP-Z39 and six SAGs for NBK19. All SAGs used were provided by the Bigelow Laboratory for Ocean Sciences Single-Cell Genomics Center (scgc.bigelow.org). Bioinformatic analyses using a combination of publicly available software and custom scripting written in the computer programming languages Python and R were carried out to determine the basic genomic properties, evolutionary relatedness, representative environmental pangenomes, and metabolic properties of these organisms. Analyses indicated that the examined JL-ETNP-Z39 SAGs are …

Predictors Of Fruit And Vegetable Intake Among University Students, Ashley Citrowske
Theses and Dissertations
Students’ food preferences may change and develop while attending college. These changes could have an impact on their nutritional health during enrollment and after graduation and, as an extension, their disease risk and overall health. College students living on or near a campus are a convenient population to provide health and nutrition education. A cross-sectional, secondary analysis was completed on NCHA-ACHA health survey data from one public, Midwestern university. Survey questions relating to dietary behaviors were included in this secondary data analysis. Females were more likely to report higher intake of fruits and vegetables compared with males. Fruit and vegetable …

Motor Competency's Relationship To Interpersonal Coordination In Stationary Basketball Dribbling, Daniel Bell
Motor Competency's Relationship To Interpersonal Coordination In Stationary Basketball Dribbling, Daniel Bell
Theses and Dissertations
A gold standard for student pairing strategies in a physical education setting has still yet to be discovered and is a widely debated topic in the field. Inclusion and equitable learning environments are areas of emphasis for practitioners while trying to find new ways to elicit these things to benefit students. Interpersonal coordination (IC), a social phenomenon on which this study focused, has direct applications for pairing strategies in physical education. In essence, IC is a state in which two individuals non-consciously mimic each other’s motor patterns. IC was measured between 182 student pairings performing stationary basketball dribbling. Participants included …

Methods: Electronic databases (MEDLINE, Scopus, CINAHL, and SPORTDiscus) were systematically searched (up to and including 19 September 2019) for peer-reviewed randomized controlled trials (RCTs) meeting the following criteria: apparently healthy, previously sedentary men (aged ≥18 …
The Effects Of In-Season Training Changes On Body Composition In Division I Collegiate Football Players, Kayla Emory
The Effects Of In-Season Training Changes On Body Composition In Division I Collegiate Football Players, Kayla Emory
Graduate Research Theses & Dissertations
Body composition quantification in athletics can be used as a tool for developing a training program and monitoring progress in developing ideal body composition for optimal performance. Commonly, athletes are concerned with the amount of fat free mass (FFM) and fat mass (FM) they have, since those variables have been commonly linked to reduced performance and increased injury risks. The game of football is constantly evolving and so is the need for players to be bigger, stronger, and faster. Most research has investigated the body composition changes in football players as a whole team during an off-season, however few have …

Statistical reporting of quantitative research data has been plagued by potential bias and reporting suppression due to a single numerical output: the p-value. While there is great importance in its merit, creating a pass-fail system (set at point of .05) has created a culture of researchers submitting their project’s data to a filing cabinet if it does not yield “statistical significance” based on this value. The editors of the International Journal of Exercise Science are following the American Statistical Association’s call for statistical reform by adjusting our reporting guidelines to the following requirements: [1.] make an intentional effort to move …

Physical inactivity is a worldwide public health problem, and it is a risk factor for several chronic diseases. Square dancing nightly may be an efficient way to promote physical activity among Chinese residents. This study aims to explore factors that affect resident participation in square dancing on the basis of social cognitive theory constructs (outcome expectations, outcome expectancies, self-efficacy, self-control, and environment) that may provide a scientific basis for designing interventions to promote physical activity in the future. Forty squares near neighborhood communities in Chongqing were randomly selected. A sample of 1732 residents who came to these squares at 18:00–21:00 …
