Maternal Mortality Among African American Women In The State Of Georgia, Causes, Policy, And Ethical Considerations, Zahra Shahin, Isabella Hardwick, Nancy Jeffery, Jalisa Jordan, William A. Mase
Journal of the Georgia Public Health Association
Background
The U.S. is currently one of thirteen countries where maternal mortality rates (MMR) is worse now than it was fifteen years ago. Reducing maternal mortality is one of the significant challenges facing the health system in the United States, especially in the State of Georgia, which has one of the highest MMR in the nation. The purpose of this review is to explore the causes, policy, and ethical contextual factors contributing to increased maternal mortality rates among African American women in the State of Georgia. Also, identifying and addressing weaknesses and gaps that exist in the healthcare system and …

Journal of the Georgia Public Health Association
Background: Community Health Workers (CHW) can be an important and evidence-based response to reduce unnecessary morbidity and mortality in chronic diseases like asthma, heart disease, diabetes, cancers, HIV, and maternal/child health, and mental health. Georgia’s urban and rural diverse populations are at high risk from many of these conditions. Largely the outcomes in controlling these health issues are nonmedical and include social determinants of health, i.e., access to care, transportation, inadequate housing, and health literacy. CHWs can increase the capacity of individuals, families, and communities to improve their health. Historically, concerns of CHWs on healthcare teams to address these issues …

There are few data considering human genetics as an important risk factor for birth abnormalities related to ZIKV infection during pregnancy, even though sub-Saharan African populations are apparently more resistant to CZS as compared to populations in the Americas. We hypothesized that single nucleotide variants (SNVs), especially in innate immune genes, could make some populations more susceptible to Zika congenital complications than others. Differences in the SNV frequencies among continental populations provide great potential for Machine Learning techniques. We explored a key immune genomic gradient between individuals from Africa, Asia and Latin America, working with complex signatures, using 297 SNVs. …

Physical Activity In Aging: Biological Outcomes, Functional Autonomy, And Policy Implications, Nathan Albert Schuler
Theses
A 2016 study concluded that the elderly spend 2.5 times the national average on health services (De Nardi 2016). Despite consisting of only 14 percent of the United States population, the elderly accounted for 34 percent of all medical spending, and accounted for 73 percent of all deaths (De Nardi 2016). In addition, current projections estimate that with the aging of the baby boomer generation, the percentage of the population that is older than 65 will swell to approximately 20 percent of the population by 2030 (Ortman 2014). If the medical spending holds, this will coincide with massive increases in …

Two cosegregating single-nucleotide polymorphisms (SNPs) in human TLR4, an A896G transition at SNP rs4986790 (D299G) and a C1196T transition at SNP rs4986791 (T399I), have been associated with LPS hyporesponsiveness and differential susceptibility to many infectious or inflammatory diseases. However, many studies failed to confirm these associations, and transfection experiments resulted in conflicting conclusions about the impact of these SNPs on TLR4 signaling. Using advanced protein modeling from crystallographic data of human and murine TLR4, we identified homologous substitutions of these SNPs in murine Tlr4, engineered a knock-in strain expressing the D298G and N397I TLR4 SNPs homozygously, and characterized in vivo …

The Effect Of A Sun Damage Simulation Photography App On The Skin-Protective Behavior Intentions Of Women With Children Age 18 Or Younger, James Bowlds
DNP Projects
Abstract
Background: Skin cancer is the most common form of cancer diagnosed in the U.S. annually, despite being a largely preventable disease through the limitation of ultraviolet radiation exposure. Attempts to decrease its incidence have focused on appearance-based interventions. These have been effective at improving sun-protective behaviors among various subpopulations including people of color. Anecdotal observations suggest mothers more frequently utilize sun protection for their children than on themselves.
Purpose: The purpose of this project was to gain an understanding of the sun protection practices and beliefs of Caucasian and African American mothers, to assess the response to an appearance-based …

Introduction: Delayed enteral nutrition in critically ill patients increases the risk of complications and poor outcomes. Current evidence-based guidelines recommend initiation of enteral nutrition within 24-48 hours of intensive care unit (ICU) admission. The quality improvement (QI) project aim was to examine whether enteral nutrition was initiated within 24- 48 hours of mechanical ventilation after implementation of QI intervention in order to determine practice change.
Methods: The QI protocol was introduced to the Cardiovascular ICU (CVICU) at UK Chandler Hospital (UKHC) nurses via an education session. A post-education electronic survey identified the nurse’s understanding of the protocol. To identify nursing …
E-Regulation, Sharon Yadin
E-Regulation, Sharon Yadin
Cardozo Arts & Entertainment Law Journal
The new face of the regulatory state is digital. In this era of e-regulation, administrative agencies use social media, web platforms, and mobile applications for regulatory purposes. New forms of online communication now allow regulators to harness public opinion as an enforcement mechanism in such diverse areas as product safety, environmental protection, workplace injury prevention, customer satisfaction in financial services, child safety, restaurant sanitation, and healthcare quality. The use of internet-based naming-and-shaming and data-sharing practices-through tweets, online posts, rankings, scores, star ratings, and other methods-serves to enforce compliance and promote corporate social responsibility. E-regulation constitutes a paradigm shift in government …

Prisonegg, Jonathan Pessant Mfa
Prisonegg, Jonathan Pessant Mfa

Prisonegg is a collection of thirty-two poems centered around the duality of prisons. The poetry comments on how binaries play out in relationships, and how the binary codes of relationships can both imprison and liberate. Sonics-anaphora, rhythm, dissonance play an essential role in the construction of the poetry. The poems in this collection create an ephemeral déjà vu effect with their sounds and imagery. This manuscript is heavily influenced by a speculative/science fiction framework, with authors and poets like William Gibson, Brenda Shaughnessy, Arthur C. Clarke, and Kimiko Hahn inviting the reader to reflect on the many worlds within one …
Production And Properties Of Resistant Maltodextrin From Cassava Starch, Kamonrat Trithavisup
Production And Properties Of Resistant Maltodextrin From Cassava Starch, Kamonrat Trithavisup
Chulalongkorn University Theses and Dissertations (Chula ETD)
This research aimed to determine the effects of processing conditions on molecular structure and selected properties of cassava-derived resistant dextrins (RDs) and resistant maltodextrins (RMDs). Cassava starch was mixed with hydrochloric acid solution to obtain the final acid concentration of 0.04-0.10% dry starch basis, dried at 50oC until having <5% moisture, and dextrinized at 100-120oC for 60-180 min. As acid concentration, heating temperature and time increased, water solubility, reducing sugar content, total dietary fiber (TDF) content and proportion of high molecular weight fiber fraction of RDs increased while their whiteness decreased. For the solution containing RDs produced under mild conditions (0.04-0.08% HCl, 100°C, 60 min), an endothermic peak at 45-70oC, having enthalpy of 1.66-2.14 J/g was detected. However, no endotherm was detected from the solution of RDs processed under extreme conditions. Harsher dextrinization conditions resulted in the RDs with slightly higher molecular weight but containing shorter branched chains. Dextrinization resulted in the formation of α-1,2, α-1,6, β-1,2, β-1,4 and β-1,6 in RDs. Lower proportion of α-1,4 linkage and α-/β-reducing ends with higher proportion of β-1,2, β-1,4, α-/β-1,6 linkages and degree of branching (DB) were found in RDs prepared under stronger dextrinization conditions. Although indigestible portion was enhanced by dextrinization, TDF of the RDs were only 7-47%. To increase the TDF content, RDs prepared from 5 different conditions (0.04% and 0.06% HCl, 120oC, 60-180 min), having >30% TDF, were selected for RMD production. The 30% RD solutions were treated with commercial α-amylase enzyme at 70oC, pH 6, for 90 and 120 min, to obtain the final dextrose equivalent of 8 and 12, respectively. The samples were then purified and spray dried. Alpha-amylase treatment produced RMD with shorter …5%>

Canine corneal blindness is a common cause of vision loss and visual impairment worldwide. While the demand of canine corneal graft is continuously elevated, the clinical useable grafts are limited to acellular biomaterials and allograft. This study aimed to generate the tissue-engineered canine cornea in the part of corneal epithelium and underlying stroma based on cLESCs (canine limbal epithelial stem cells) seeded silk fibroin and gelatin (SF/G) film and cCSSCs (canine corneal stromal stem cells) seeded SF/G scaffold respectively. Both cell types were successfully isolated by collagenase I. SF/G films and scaffolds served as the prospective substrates for cLESCs and …
Comparison Of Canine Urinary Bacterial Population In Calcium Oxalate Urolithiasis And Healthy Conditions, Nichamon Rakprakobkij
Comparison Of Canine Urinary Bacterial Population In Calcium Oxalate Urolithiasis And Healthy Conditions, Nichamon Rakprakobkij
Chulalongkorn University Theses and Dissertations (Chula ETD)
Urolithiasis is one of the most common lower urinary tract diseases in dogs. Struvite is the most canine uroliths reported, and the second reported is calcium oxalate (CaOx). However, the proportion of CaOx urolithiasis tends to be increased. CaOx urolithiasis has high incidence of recurrence after the treatment and the pathogenesis of the stone formation is uncleared. Recent studies revealed that oxalate degrader bacteria in the gastrointestinal tract has important roles in CaOx stone formation but no research has been done to study the composition and the role of microbiome in the urinary tract of dogs with CaOx urolithiasis. This …

Molecular Detection Of Viable Mycobacterium Tuberculosis Complex In Clinical Specimens, Suthidee Petsong
Chulalongkorn University Theses and Dissertations (Chula ETD)
Tuberculosis (TB) is the global health concern because of the rising incidence and mortality. TB is caused by Mycobacterium tuberculosis complex (MTBC) and transmitted via inhalation of infectious droplet nuclei circulating in the air. The World Health Organization (WHO) recommends the use of Acid-fast (AFB) smear microscopy, MTBC culture, and molecular detection of MTBC DNA for diagnosis of TB. The response to treatment should be acquired as soon as possible to reduce disease transmission and drug resistance. Although MTBC culture is a gold standard, it is laborious, expensive, and may take up to 8 weeks. The AFB staining and molecular …

Effect Of Jorunnamycin A On Cancer Stem Cells Of Human Lung Cancer H460 Cells, Somruethai Sumkhemthong
Effect Of Jorunnamycin A On Cancer Stem Cells Of Human Lung Cancer H460 Cells, Somruethai Sumkhemthong
Chulalongkorn University Theses and Dissertations (Chula ETD)
It has been recognized that cancer stem-like cells (CSCs) in tumor tissue crucially contribute to therapeutic failure, resulting in a high mortality rate in lung cancer patients. Due to their stem-like features of self-renewal and tumor formation, CSCs can lead to drug resistance and tumor recurrence. Herein, the suppressive effect of jorunnamycin A, a bistetrahydroisoquinolinequinone isolated from Thai blue sponge Xestospongia sp., on cancer spheroid initiation and self-renewal in the CSCs of human lung cancer cells is revealed. The depletion of stemness transcription factors, including Nanog, Oct-4, and Sox2 in the lung CSC-enriched population treated with jorunnamycin A (0.5 µM), …

Background: P-cresyl sulfate and indoxyl sulfate are strongly associated with cardiovascular events, and all-cause mortality in chronic kidney disease (CKD). This study was conducted to compare the effects between sevelamer and calcium carbonate on protein-bound uremic toxins in pre-dialysis CKD patients with hyperphosphatemia. Methods: After 2 weeks of the run-in period, 40 pre-dialysis CKD patients with persistent hyperphosphatemia were randomly assigned to receive either daily 2,400 mg of sevelamer or 1,500 mg of calcium carbonate for 24 weeks. Serum p-cresyl sulfate, indoxyl sulfate, fibroblast growth factor 23 (FGF23), lipid profiles, and high sensitivity C-reactive protein (hs-CRP) were evaluated. The primary …

Objective/Purpose: Group Well Child Care is an innovation in primary care delivery that may help meet the quadruple aim of health care. The objective of this study is to characterize Group Well Child Care providers’ experiences, perceptions, and strategies.
Introduction: In Group Care, also known as shared medical appointments, patients with similar medical needs attend appointments together. The practice of Group Care has spread, particularly where social support is beneficial (e.g., early parenting) and among those who might experience shame or stigma for their diagnosis or background (e.g., poverty). Group Care has shown promise in improving patient outcomes, such as …
