Effects Of Hydrocolloids On Pasting Behavior And Gelling Properties Of Banana Flour And Its Application In Bread, Rosalin Herman

Chulalongkorn University Theses and Dissertations (Chula ETD)

Bananas have a high potential in becoming a future staple crop due to its rapid growth rate, short harvest time, and high starch content. However, banana flour is highly retrograded which is its major limitation. The objective of this study was to study the effects of selected hydrocolloids on the pasting and gelling properties as related to the gelatinization and retrogradation of banana flour as well as its application in bread as a wheat flour substitute. Xanthan gum (XG), gum arabic (GA), hydroxypropyl methylcellulose (HPMC), and guar gum (GG) were added to banana flour at different concentrations (0.5, 1.0, and …

Diet: A Public Health And Economic Concern, Nisuka T. Williams Jan 2020

Diet: A Public Health And Economic Concern, Nisuka T. Williams

USF St. Petersburg campus Honors Program Theses (Undergraduate)

The food we eat is governed and sometimes justifiably so. There are taxes and policies meant to protect consumers and children from products that hurt our health. This thesis has gathered data and analyzed if these policies are performing in favor of the desired outcome. Is a tax on sugar-sweetened beverages making a healthy difference? Does taxing and eliminating processed foods high in saturated fatty acids benefit the health of citizens? Does restricting foods marketed to children promote lower percentages of obesity in young children? The analysis run by JMP does not support that taxes on sugary beverages result in …

Philosophy And Practice Of Wholistic And Physical Student Development At Select Seventh-Day Adventist Higher Educational Institutions And Work Colleges, Brenda Gay Palmer Chase Jan 2020

Philosophy And Practice Of Wholistic And Physical Student Development At Select Seventh-Day Adventist Higher Educational Institutions And Work Colleges, Brenda Gay Palmer Chase

Dissertations

Problem and Purpose

There is an extensive array of literature and research espousing the importance of developing the whole student. Comparatively, there is limited research on examining how colleges and universities that promote wholistic student development incorporate each of the human dimensions into an integrated educational experience. There is, therefore, a need for scholarship that compares and contrasts how separate and distinct higher educational systems having a philosophy of educating the whole person define and implement the development of the physical dimension. Similarly, research is needed that examines how the differences in interpreting and implementing the development of the physical …

Melatonin For The Treatment Of Sepsis: The Scientific Rationale, Ruben Manuel Luciano Colunga Biancatelli, Max Berrill, Yassen H. Mohammed, Paul E. Marik

Bioelectrics Publications

Sepsis affects 30 million people worldwide, leading to 6 million deaths every year (WHO), and despite decades of research, novel initiatives are drastically needed. According to the current literature, oxidative imbalance and mitochondrial dysfunction are common features of septic patients that can cause multiorgan failure and death. Melatonin, alongside its traditionally accepted role as the master hormonal regulator of the circadian rhythm, is a promising adjunctive drug for sepsis through its anti-inflammatory, antiapoptotic and powerful antioxidant properties. Several animal models of sepsis have demonstrated that melatonin can prevent multiorgan dysfunction and improve survival through restoring mitochondrial electron transport chain (ETC) …

Expression Of Soluble, Active, Fluorescently Tagged Hephaestin In Cos And Cho Cell Lines, Eli̇f Si̇bel Aslan, Kenneth N. White, Basharut A. Syed, Kaila S. Srai, Robert W. Evans

Turkish Journal of Biology

Hephaestin (Hp) is a trans-membrane protein, which plays a critical role in intestinal iron absorption. Hp was originally identified as the gene responsible for the phenotype of sex-linked anaemia in the sla mouse. The mutation in the sla protein causes accumulation of dietary iron in duodenal cells, causing severe microcytic hypochromic anaemia. Although mucosal uptake of dietary iron is normal, export from the duodenum is inhibited. Hp is homologous to ceruloplasmin (Cp), a member of the family of multi copper ferroxidases (MCFs) and possesses ferroxidase activity that facilitates iron release from the duodenum and load onto the serum iron transport …

Is Vegan Confectionary Sold In The United Kingdom Safe For Milk Allergy Sufferers?, Faye Harrison

Electronic Theses and Dissertations

Background
Milk allergy is the most common childhood allergy. Reading food labels is important to prevent an allergic reaction. By United Kingdom (UK) law, milk needs to be listed on the food label if it used as an ingredient. Products can be called ‘free from’ milk if manufacturers have undergone rigorous process and testing to ensure it is not contaminated with milk. Precautionary Allergen Labelling (PAL) like ‘may contain milk’ statements are unregulated and can be used at manufacturer’s discretion. Similarly, ‘Vegan’ products are not regulated by law and appear to be on the increase. Objective
The study aimed to …

Decisions In The Dark: Why "Pregnancy Exclusion" Statutes Are Unconstitutional And Unethical, Shea Flanagan Jan 2020

Decisions In The Dark: Why "Pregnancy Exclusion" Statutes Are Unconstitutional And Unethical, Shea Flanagan

Northwestern University Law Review

Advance health care directives are tools that allow people to state their health care treatment wishes or designate a health care proxy in anticipation of being unable to make those decisions in the future, including preferences to remove life-sustaining medical treatment. However, thirty-six states currently have “pregnancy exclusion” laws that require physicians to void the advance directives of pregnant women receiving life-sustaining treatment. This Note assesses the constitutionality and ethics of state pregnancy exclusion statutes by employing a new five-category typology of current pregnancy exclusion laws. This Note argues that all categories of these statutes violate an individual’s constitutional rights …

Abstract

Introduction: Systolic heart failure is a chronic condition in which there is a decrease in the heart’s ability to pump blood to the body. While there are several treatments for the symptoms of heart failure, the only curative treatment for most causes of chronic heart failure is a heart transplant. Due to the limited number of heart donors, 72.2% of patients in need of a heart transplant in 2017 spent up to 2 years waiting for a transplant. Mechanical circulatory support has been used to increase patient survival to transplantation. In the past, these machines were external devices that …

The Use Of A Gluten-Free Diet As Treatment For Hashimoto's Thyroiditis, Grace Mcknight Jan 2020

The Use Of A Gluten-Free Diet As Treatment For Hashimoto's Thyroiditis, Grace Mcknight

Capstone Showcase

Hashimoto’s Thyroiditis (HT) is the most prevalent autoimmune disease in humans. The current treatment for HT is thyroid hormone supplementation. However, recent research suggests possible treatment of HT with gluten-free diets. This study found several sources testing this hypothesis. The results showed evidence to support that gluten-free diets are associated with, and cause a reduction in thyroid antibodies. Despite the current evidence, more randomized control trials are needed to increase reliability and validity of these findings.

Efficacy Of Curcumin In The Treatment Of Advanced Pancreatic Ductal Adenocarcinoma Compared To Sole Gemcitabine Chemotherapy, Komal Vadodaria

Capstone Showcase

Pancreatic ductal adenocarcinoma (PDAC) is a leading cause of cancer death in both men and women. Due to the difficulty of diagnosing this malignancy until it has progressed to an advanced stage, treatment is often difficult, expensive and ineffective. The first line treatment for PDAC is Gemcitabine chemotherapy. However, due to its extensive side effect profile and the early chemo-resistance the PDAC cells develop against Gemcitabine, the need for alternative therapeutic methods to manage treatment is necessary. Therefore, this review analyzes if in individuals with advanced pancreatic ductal adenocarcinoma [P], does the addition of curcumin with the standard Gemcitabine chemotherapy …

Introduction: In recent decades, the number of people affected by type 2 diabetes mellitus has been a topic of interest. The wide reaching impact on both, individual and societal, healthcare costs and quality measures, begs for attention and interventions. Lifestyle modifications, such as: weight management or loss, increasing physical activity, and making healthier dietary choices, are the first line intervention. However, there are not studies that directly compare the role of a single dietary approach to a form of physical activity. Rather, different diets go head to head as well as aerobic versus resistance training. Therefore, in an attempt to …

Effective Elective? Elective Courses’ Impact On Student Performance During Associated Advanced Pharmacy Practice Experiences, Shelby Spencer Tungate Jan 2020

Effective Elective? Elective Courses’ Impact On Student Performance During Associated Advanced Pharmacy Practice Experiences, Shelby Spencer Tungate

MPA/MPP/MPFM Capstone Projects

Experiential education programs at colleges of pharmacy are guided by standards set forth by the Accreditation Council for Pharmacy Education (ACPE.) Exactly how these standards are met, however, is often determined by the individual college of pharmacy. This includes deciding how students are selected and placed on their fourth-year rotations, referred to as Advanced Pharmacy Practices Experiences, or “APPEs.” While it may seem that students who have taken elective courses focused on specialized topics, such as pediatrics or geriatrics, will perform better on related APPEs, this thought remains largely unfounded. Using four years of student data at the University of …

Killing With Kindness: When Hunters Want To Let You Know They Care, Erica Von Essen, Michael Allen Jan 2020

Killing With Kindness: When Hunters Want To Let You Know They Care, Erica Von Essen, Michael Allen

ETSU Faculty Works

‘Care’ is a term that hunters increasingly apply to diverse practices pertaining to their interactions with wildlife. In this article, we investigated the extent and durability of hunters’ use of care language, including appeals made to sentiment, relation, compassion, embodiedness and situated morality. After establishing the use of such language in contemporary hunting media, we discuss two case studies of contemporary sport hunting that tease out dimensions of care. These case studies show how hunters’ appeal to care is deeply problematic and oppositely, how these hunting forms bring out new relations and scopes of care with wildlife unanticipated by critics. …
