Use Of Unmanned Aerial System (Uas) For High Throughput Evaluation Of Forage Yield In Oat Breeding Nurseries, Prakriti Sharma Jan 2020

Use Of Unmanned Aerial System (Uas) For High Throughput Evaluation Of Forage Yield In Oat Breeding Nurseries, Prakriti Sharma

Electronic Theses and Dissertations

Current strategies for phenotyping (for traits like biomass) numerous breeding lines under field conditions demand significant investment in both time and labor. Unmanned aerial systems (UAS) can be used to collect vegetation indexes (VI) with high throughput and could provide an efficient way to predict forage yield in breeding nurseries with accuracy. The main objective of the study was to evaluate the use of VIs derived from UAV collected images for estimating crop biomass. For this study, forage trials consisting of 35 oat genotypes were carried out at three locations in 2018 and four locations in 2019. Unmanned aerial vehicles …

Exploring Sleep Health Among Occupational Therapy Students, Kathy M. Yang, Stacy Smallfield Jan 2020

Exploring Sleep Health Among Occupational Therapy Students, Kathy M. Yang, Stacy Smallfield

Journal of Occupational Therapy Education

A substantial number of health-professional graduate students do not follow the national recommendation of obtaining at least seven hours of sleep per day. Decreased sleep duration and quality are strongly associated with daytime sleepiness and dysfunction, academic burnout, low academic performance, and mental health symptoms and disorders. However, limited research exists on sleep health among occupational therapy (OT) graduate students. Thus, the purpose of this study was to explore OT graduate student perspectives on sleep and to measure their sleep duration, quality, and practices to inform sleep promotion strategies for increased student well-being. A mixed-method study with a cross-sectional design …

Analytical Variables Leading To The Involvement Of Consumers And Farmers In Sustainable Urban Agriculture In The Indianapolis Region, Olivia Holabird Jan 2020

Analytical Variables Leading To The Involvement Of Consumers And Farmers In Sustainable Urban Agriculture In The Indianapolis Region, Olivia Holabird

Undergraduate Honors Thesis Collection

200,000 people living in Indianapolis have low food access, most of whom live in low-income areas. One solution to these food deserts is sustainable urban agriculture. I investigated what factors bring people living in the Indianapolis region to become involved in sustainable agriculture in the hopes of increasing future involvement. To do this, I conducted 12 semi-structured interviews with 6 farmers and 6 consumers across the Indianapolis region. I used Vermeir and Verbeke’s analytical categories of values, social norms, certainty, perceived availability, and perceived influence. Through my interviews, however, I found my own variables of sense of identity, accessibility, health, …

The Effect Of Color, Preference, And The Interaction Of Color And Preference On Short-Term Memory, Shreya Patel Jan 2020

The Effect Of Color, Preference, And The Interaction Of Color And Preference On Short-Term Memory, Shreya Patel

Undergraduate Honors Thesis Collection

The link between color and memory has sparked a lot of curiosity over the past few years. Previous research suggests that color can affect short term recall of word lists (Singg, 2017). Other studies have shown that color can generally help increase object memory (Lloyd-Jones & Nakabayashi, 2009). Color increases attention and emotional arousal, which can lead to better memory of certain objects, words, and ideas (Dzulkifli & Mustafar, 2013). This study aimed to determine if there was a relationship between color, color preference, and short-term recall of a list of words. A total of forty participants were randomly selected. …

Patterns Of Epiphytic Lichen Abundance On Aspen Stands In Proximity To Roads Of Varying Vehicular Traffic, D. Aragon, C. Castillo, J. Moffroid, G. Thomas

Aspen Bibliography

Although present in nearly any wild space with available moisture and on a wide variety of substrates, lichen, and its importance as a bioindicator for an ecosystem, is often overlooked. As air pollution becomes a greater concern for flora, fauna, and even humans, the story told by lichen growth becomes more useful as we try to make sense of the downstream effects of anthropogenic contributions to poor air quality. One such human-driven pollutant is the level of emissions that result from vehicular travel. The Jackson Hole area has experienced a large increase in vehicular traffic in the past five to …

Effects Of Dietary Choices On Anxiety And Depression, Frederick Mignone, Lina Begdache Jan 2020

Effects Of Dietary Choices On Anxiety And Depression, Frederick Mignone, Lina Begdache

Research Days Posters 2020

Anxiety is commonly defined as a set of emotions including nervousness, restlessness or being fidgety. Depression is commonly defined as a state of unhappiness, hopelessness, worthlessness and a sense of futility. Previous research reported a positive relationship between the consumption of energy drinks, dairy and anxiety. On the other hand, other studies revealed a negative relationship between the consumption of fruit and anxiety. In addition, there is an established negative relationship between exercise, fish consumption and depression. However, there is a need to assess dietary patterns in relation to mental distress as nutrients collectively contribute to brain chemistry . An …

An Analytical Examination On The Effects Of Vegetarian And Omnivorous Diets On C-Reactive Protein, Aletha Kleis Jan 2020

An Analytical Examination On The Effects Of Vegetarian And Omnivorous Diets On C-Reactive Protein, Aletha Kleis

Undergraduate Honors Theses

There is a lack of research regarding how following a vegetarian or omnivores diet effects C-Reactive Protein (CRP) levels of people as seen through results from an analysis of data gathered from the National Health and Nutrition Examination Survey (NHANES). The level of CRP is a reflection of how much inflammation there is in one’s body and is a popular indicator of risk for heart disease. Thus, in this research, I use the NHANES data to look at the relationship of CRP levels of people who identified themselves as vegetarian or not, while also considering the general healthiness of each …

Thiamine-Induced Nitric Oxide Improves Tolerance To Boron Toxicity In Pepper Plants By Enhancing Antioxidants, Cengi̇z Kaya, Mustafa Aslan, Ferhat Uğurlar, Muhammad Ashraf

Turkish Journal of Agriculture and Forestry

The role of thiamine (THI)-induced nitric oxide (NO) synthesis in the improvement of tolerance to boron (B) toxicity in pepper (Capsicum annuum L.) was studied. A solution of THI (50 or 100 mg L-1) was sprayed to the foliage of pepper plants exposed to high B regime (2.0 mM H3BO3) once a week for 4 weeks. A scavenger of NO (0.1 mM), cPTIO, along with THI was sprayed once a week to ascertain whether or not endogenous NO played a role in the alleviation of B stress in pepper plants by THI. There were significant reductions in plant dry weight, …

Institute for Human Development, East Africa

Background: Neonatal jaundice (NNJ) is common in sub‐Saharan Africa (SSA), and it is associated with sepsis. Despite the high incidence, little has been documented about developmental impairments associated with NNJ in SSA. In particular, it is not clear if sepsis is associated with greater impairment following NNJ.

Methods: We followed up 169 participants aged 12 months (57 cases and 112 controls) within the Kilifi Health Demographic Surveillance System. The diagnosis of NNJ was based on clinical laboratory measurement of total serum bilirubin on admission, whereas the developmental outcomes were assessed using the Developmental Milestones Checklist and Kilifi Development …

A Coffee Break For Bitcoin, Margaret Ryznar Jan 2020

A Coffee Break For Bitcoin, Margaret Ryznar

Indiana Law Journal

For many, the appeal of bitcoin is in its detachment from government regulation. However, the Coffee bonding theory, which initially arose in the context of foreign stocks, suggests certain benefits of regulation for bitcoin, including increased legitimacy. By invoking the Coffee bonding theory, this Article offers another perspective on the regulation of bitcoin.

Prosecuting Foreign Bribery In National Projects: A Multi-Phased Approach To Reduce Corruption, Julia E. Johnson Jan 2020

Prosecuting Foreign Bribery In National Projects: A Multi-Phased Approach To Reduce Corruption, Julia E. Johnson

American University Business Law Review

The gradual establishment of an international mechanism to review and prosecute allegations of corruption could help to deter fraudulent conduct. Fraudulent conduct often reduces the economic benefits associated with large-scale development or investment projects. These projects are generally awarded through contract bidding; the bidding outcome may be dictated by bribery and other corrupt behaviors by local officials overseeing the project. The money earmarked for the project may in turn be siphoned off to the bribe recipients for private gain, leaving citizens unable to appreciate the fruits of any such project. For this reason, reducing corruption should remain a key priority. …

Grandma’S Meatballs And Syrian Sweets: Food Is Home, Anke Klitzing

Other resources

Abstract: Food plays a strong part in the formation and maintenance of our identity, and is intimately linked with memory and a sense of home. Meals are an important site of socialisation and the tastes and smells of our childhood often recall the nurture and affirmation of identity received at that time. Individual foodways are anchored in the family, which in turn is embedded in regional foodways and cuisine

"The Utmost Strength I Can Bear": Strategies And Psychological Costs Of Mothering Within Political Violence, Cindy A. Sousa, Mona El-Zuhairi, Manahil Siddiqi Jan 2020

"The Utmost Strength I Can Bear": Strategies And Psychological Costs Of Mothering Within Political Violence, Cindy A. Sousa, Mona El-Zuhairi, Manahil Siddiqi

Graduate School of Social Work and Social Research Faculty Research and Scholarship

Though certainly not women’s only identity or set of responsibilities for women in conflict settings, political violence creates distinct challenges for mothers due to the additional burdens of care-taking in these contexts. Yet, given the paucity of research on the topic, we still are operating without a clear understanding of how political violence jeopardizes maternal well-being and care-taking practices. Drawing on feminist perspectives on mothering, in the analyses presented here, authors use content analysis to explore mothering and political violence from five focus groups with women in Palestine. Results demonstrate the considerable suffering mothers and children endure in war; the …
