The Qualitative Report
Undernutrition is a major public health problem for under 5 years of age children in India. Approximately 41% and 21% of under 5 years of age children are stunted and wasted respectively. Despite the known importance of age appropriate infant and young child feeding practices for child nutrition, the rates of these practices remain poor in India. The major determinants for inappropriate IYCF practices are beliefs and knowledge of parents and caregivers. These can be effectively addressed through counselling by mobile Health technology as mobile phones are widely available and have a high penetration across the country. This formative research …

Unsustainable consumption of biofuels contributes to deforestation and climate change, while household air pollution from burning solid biofuels in homes results in millions of premature deaths globally every year. Honduras, like many low and medium Human Development Index countries, depends on primary solid biofuels for more than 30% of its primary energy supply (as of 2013). We conducted a societal exergy analysis and developed a forest stock model for Honduras for 1971–2013 and used the results to model an energy transition from traditional wood stoves to either improved efficiency wood cookstoves or modern fuel cookstoves (using Electricity or Liquefied petroleum …

Identifying Who Improves Or Maintains Their Food Literacy Behaviours After Completing An Adult Program, Andrea Begley, Ellen Paynter, Lucy Butcher
Research outputs 2014 to 2021
Food Sensations for Adults is a free four-week nutrition and cooking program that teaches low- to middle-income individuals food literacy. This research aimed to compare demographic characteristics of participants who completed the program’s follow-up questionnaire three months after program completion and assess whether food literacy and dietary behaviour changes were improved or maintained. Statistical analysis methods used factor scores of the plan and manage, selection, and preparation domains to examine mean self-reported changes in food literacy. Tertile stratification methods calculated changes in participants who had low, middle, and high end-of-program food literacy scores, and multivariable regression analysis explored the associations. …

Assessment Of Ecosystem Services And Ecological Regionalization Of Grasslands Support Establishment Of Ecological Security Barriers In Northern China, Bai Yongfei, Zhao Yujin, Wang Yang, Zhou Kailing
Bulletin of Chinese Academy of Sciences (Chinese Version)
Grassland ecosystems of Northern China, the headwaters region and water resource conservation areas for the Yellow River, the Yangzi River, the Lancang River, and the Luanhe River, are important ecological security barriers in China. They play extremely important roles in maintaining multiple ecosystem functions and services and sustaining multinational cultural diversity. However, the grassland ecosystems of Northern China have experienced widespread deterioration in functions and services since the last several decades due to the overexploitation of production functions at the cost of their ecological functions. Therefore, assessment of ecosystem services and ecological regionalization of grasslands in Northern China are needed …

Administration Of Canagliflozin For The Remission Of Metabolic Syndrome In Nondiabetic Adults, Corrie Asseo
Yale School of Medicine Physician Associate Program Theses
Metabolic syndrome is a critical risk factor for the development of type 2 diabetes mellitus and cardiovascular disease, two of the leading causes of death in the United States. With over one third of the adult population currently affected, this syndrome poses a serious health and economic burden. Lifestyle modification is the primary treatment, however only 50% maintain adherence. A single pharmacological therapy such as canagliflozin may overcome this lack of treatment adherence. Our purpose is to establish a difference between canagliflozin 300 milligrams daily plus lifestyle modification education and lifestyle modification education alone for the remission of metabolic syndrome …

Magnesium Exposure In Very Preterm Neonates And Adverse Gastrointestinal Outcomes, Giavanna G. Chirico
Yale School of Medicine Physician Associate Program Theses
Preterm birth is the leading cause of perinatal morbidity and mortality, especially among neonates born less than 32 weeks’ gestation. Magnesium sulfate is the standard treatment for seizure prevention in preeclampsia and for fetal neuroprotection in mothers at risk for preterm delivery. However, the consequences of antenatal magnesium exposure on the very preterm neonate’s gastrointestinal tract are not fully established. This study will determine whether elevated magnesium levels in very preterm neonates are associated with adverse gastrointestinal outcomes from birth to 4 months. Specifically, using a prospective cohort design, we will measure magnesium in umbilical cord blood of very preterm …
Vitamin D Supplementation In Fitzpatrick Skin Types Iv-Vi As Malignant Melanoma Adjuvant Treatment, Shikha Goyal
Vitamin D Supplementation In Fitzpatrick Skin Types Iv-Vi As Malignant Melanoma Adjuvant Treatment, Shikha Goyal
Yale School of Medicine Physician Associate Program Theses
Melanoma is the most lethal form of skin cancer and accounts for the majority of skin cancer deaths. Melanoma is prone to recurrence, and even with early surgical intervention relapse occurs in approximately one-third of patients. The current standard of care following excision is inconsistent and patients would benefit from adjuvant treatment to reduce recurrence rates. This randomized controlled study will investigate whether supplementation with vitamin D reduces risk of melanoma recurrence in adults with Fitzpatrick skin types IV-VI who have been diagnosed and treated for cutaneous melanoma. Outcomes will be measured by relapse-free survival rates over an 18-month period. …

Articles, Abstracts, and Reports
Recent revolutionary advances at the intersection of medicine, omics, data sciences, computing, epidemiology, and related technologies inspire us to ponder their impact on health. Their potential impact is particularly germane to the biology of pregnancy and perinatal medicine, where limited improvement in health outcomes for women and children has remained a global challenge. We assembled a group of experts to establish a Pregnancy Think Tank to discuss a broad spectrum of major gestational disorders and adverse pregnancy outcomes that affect maternal-infant lifelong health and should serve as targets for leveraging the many recent advances. This report reflects avenues for future …

© Copyright © 2020 Gaylard, Waycott and Lavery. Temperate Australia has extensive and diverse coast and marine habitats throughout its inshore and offshore waters. The region includes the southernmost extent of mangroves, over 500 estuaries and coastal embayments, home to extensive meadows of seagrasses and tidal saltmarsh. In areas of hard substrate, rocky reefs are abundant and productive with large forests of macroalgae. Coastal regions can be densely populated by humans and often habitats can be degraded, polluted or lost, while some remain relatively isolated and pristine. These habitats provide services to society including provision of food, regulate our climate …

BACKGROUND: Public policy has tremendous impacts on population health. While policy development has been extensively studied, policy implementation research is newer and relies largely on qualitative methods. Quantitative measures are needed to disentangle differential impacts of policy implementation determinants (i.e., barriers and facilitators) and outcomes to ensure intended benefits are realized. Implementation outcomes include acceptability, adoption, appropriateness, compliance/fidelity, feasibility, penetration, sustainability, and costs. This systematic review identified quantitative measures that are used to assess health policy implementation determinants and outcomes and evaluated the quality of these measures.
METHODS: Three frameworks guided the review: Implementation Outcomes Framework (Proctor et al.), Consolidated …

Reconsidering The Obstetrical Dilemma: Correlations Between Head And Pelvic Size, Kelsey Catrice Fox
Reconsidering The Obstetrical Dilemma: Correlations Between Head And Pelvic Size, Kelsey Catrice Fox
LSU Master's Theses
The Obstetrical Dilemma (OD) theory has become canon in biological anthropology. The OD posits that i] dystocia results from bipedal mothers and encephalized infants, ii] contrasting selection for bipedality and obstetrics hinders locomotive efficiency, and iii] the contradicting requirement of the fetus being small enough to pass through the birth canal yet being cognitively advanced enough to cling to its mother after birth. Females, theoretically, exhibit deficient gait efficiency for the sake of successful childbirth. An obstetric advantage theory has been posited where taller individuals with a larger head size have larger pelves. If the distance between the acetabulae increases …
Plant Power For The People: Agriculture As Just Transition In Appalachia, Shaunna Scott
Plant Power For The People: Agriculture As Just Transition In Appalachia, Shaunna Scott
ASA Annual Conference
Agriculture, deforestation, and land usage contribute to one-third of global greenhouse gas emissions. One of the best things we can do in using our capital to fight against climate change is support local sustainable agriculture. In promoting a just transition for Appalachia, we must support the growth of alternative agricultural initiatives. This will lead to sustainable jobs, local access to increased resources, socioeconomic growth, and provide an ecological benefit to an area experiencing critical need for these changes. In this way we can change the “resource curse” into a dirty blessing.

The Consequences Of Exercise-Induced Weight Loss On Food Reinforcement. A Randomized Controlled Trial, Kyle D. Flack, Harry M. Hays, Jack Moreland
Dietetics and Human Nutrition Faculty Publications
BACKGROUND: Obesity remains a primary threat to the health of most Americans, with over 66% considered overweight or obese with a body mass index (BMI) of 25 kg/m2 or greater. A common treatment option many believe to be effective, and therefore turn to, is exercise. However, the amount of weight loss from exercise training is often disappointingly less than expected with greater amounts of exercise not always promoting greater weight loss. Increases in energy intake have been prescribed as the primary reason for this lack of weight loss success with exercise. Research has mostly focused on alterations in hormonal mediators …

Stress Appraisals And Coping Strategies In Response To Palatable Food Cues Among Women With A Spectrum Of Internalized Weight Stigma, Mora A. Reinka
Doctoral Dissertations
Across two experiments, we set out to explore whether palatable food—densely caloric, low nutrition food—acts as a stigma-based stressor for individuals who have internalized negative stereotypes and beliefs against larger bodies. Using a sample of women with a normative BMI spectrum, we test whether participant’s cognitive, physiological, and psychological responses to food map onto a commonly theorized stress appraisal process—specifically that the food images are appraised as relevant, negative, and exceeding the available resources the individual possesses to deal with the implications or consequences. Furthermore, we explore coping responses to stress through direct measurement of caloric intake in the laboratory …
