Effects Of Acute Cocoa Supplementation On Postprandial Apolipoproteins, Lipoprotein Subclasses, And Inflammatory Biomarkers In Adults With Type 2 Diabetes After A High-Fat Meal, Dustin D. Davis, Rickelle Tallent, James W. Navalta, Anthony Salazar, Timothy J. Lyons, Arpita Basu

Integrated Health Sciences Faculty Research

Dyslipidemia and inflammation exacerbate postprandial metabolic stress in people with diabetes. Acute dietary supplementation with polyphenols shows promise in improving postprandial metabolic stress in type 2 diabetes (T2D). Cocoa is a rich source of dietary polyphenols with demonstrated cardioprotective effects in adults without diabetes. To date, the acute effects of cocoa on postprandial lipids and inflammation have received little attention in the presence of T2D. This report expands on our earlier observation that polyphenol-rich cocoa, given as a beverage with a fast-food-style, high-fat breakfast, increased postprandial high-density lipoprotein-cholesterol (HDL-C) in adults with T2D. We now test whether polyphenol-rich cocoa modulated …

This dissertation examines the skeletal remains and mortuary practices from two cemeteries at the early medieval site of Libice nad Cidlinou in the Czech Republic. The 9th and 10th centuries in Central Europe have been characterized by political consolidation and the rise of Christian institutions. As Christianity gained influence in the region, conversion altered not only religious beliefs: political landscapes, disease ideologies, material culture, and bodies were also transformed. The skeletal remains and mortuary contexts of 260 individuals from the Akropole and Kanín cemeteries at Libice are compared to examine how social status and engagement with Christianity influenced daily life …

The Ecological Importance And Evolutionary Potential Of Phenotypic Plasticity In Novel Environments, Shengpei Wang Jun 2020

The Ecological Importance And Evolutionary Potential Of Phenotypic Plasticity In Novel Environments, Shengpei Wang

Dissertations - ALL

Phenotypic plasticity refers to a genotype’s ability to produce different phenotypes in response to different environments. How organisms respond to environments through phenotypic plasticity can impact the fitness of individuals and thus the demography and even evolution of a population. Having environmentally relevant phenotypic responses could be especially important when a population encounters novel environments, where extinction risks are high such as at the edge of geographic ranges or when there are sudden environmental shifts. Although plasticity has been shown to facilitate the production of novel phenotypes in novel environments, it is less clear whether this leads to increased population …

Indigenous Microbial Biostimulation For Microbial Enhanced Oil Recovery Through Oil Degradation With Variation In Nutrent Concentrations, Rika Handaruni, Dea Indriani Astuti, Isty Adhitya Purwasena, Lulu Nur Afifah

Makara Journal of Science

Oil production in Indonesia has been declining since 2002, and this decline is incompatible with the high oil consumption in Indonesia. As such oil production in Indonesia should be improved. Biostimulation in microbial enhanced oil recovery involves environmental modification to stimulate microbial growth within a reservoir by adding limiting nutrients. Variation in C, N, and P concentrations injected to reservoirs can induce different responses from indigenous microbes and increase oil recovery. In this study, molasses, urea and diammonium phosphate were used as nutrients injected to a reservoir for biostimulation. Biological, physical and chemical characteristics after biostimulation were observed and bacterial …

Exploring The Genomic Architectures Of Health, Physical Traits And Antisocial Behavioral Outcomes: A Brief Report, Jorim J. Tielbeek, Brian B. Boutwell

Faculty and Student Publications

© Copyright © 2020 Tielbeek and Boutwell. A widely replicated finding across the behavioral sciences is that antisocial behaviors correlate with an array of health problems. Less clear, however, is the precise nature of this association. There is reason to suspect that a direct causal link exists between incarceration—a consequence of some antisocial behaviors—and certain negative health outcomes, for instance. However, it might be the case that broader phenotypes like antisocial behavior may correlate with certain health and physiological traits at a genomic level. We explore this possibility from a theoretical vantage point, while also presenting some preliminary data from …

A Case For Delirium Risk Prediction Models To Aid In Triaging Resources To Those Most At Risk An Integrative Literature Review, Tammy Perttula

Nursing Masters Papers

Abstract

Delirium is a complex syndrome resulting from compounding effects of acute illness, comorbidities, and the environment. It results in adverse outcomes: elevated mortality rates, length of stay, readmissions, institutionalization, long-term cognitive changes, and diminished quality of life. The rate of iatrogenic delirium is astounding, ranging from 10%-89%. There are no curative treatments; thus, primary prevention is the key. The purpose of this literature review is to identify and critique the research for the accuracy of risk stratification and feasibility in practice. Support for interventions that prevent delirium is mounting; however, interventions are resource-intensive and often not implemented. Researchers have …

Extreme environments test the limits of life; yet, some organisms thrive in harsh conditions. Extremophile lineages inspire questions about how organisms can tolerate physiochemical stressors and whether the repeated colonization of extreme environments is facilitated by predictable and repeatable evolutionary innovations. We identified the mechanistic basis underlying convergent evolution of tolerance to hydrogen sulfide (H2S)-a toxicant that impairs mitochondrial function-across evolutionarily independent lineages of a fish (Poecilia mexicana, Poeciliidae) from H2S-rich springs. Using comparative biochemical and physiological analyses, we found that mitochondrial function is maintained in the presence of H2S in sulfide …
