Sustainable Consumerism In The Eyes Of The Egyptian Generation Z, Salma Khalil
Theses and Dissertations
Sustainable Consumerism is a topic that is still being explored and developed across nations and countries. With the rising challenges of sustainable development, corporate sustainability maintains its position as being extremely challenging and difficult to achieve. Moreover, the new generation of consumers and the world’s future leaders – generation Z – have their characteristics and expectations that are expected to change the whole industrial scene to achieve sustainable development. Meanwhile, Egyptian generation Z remains unexplored and ambiguous. This study aims at studying the behavioral aspects of Egyptian generation Z, their consumerism, ecological consciousness, and corporate expectations. It adopts qualitative methods …

Incorporating Problem-Based Learning In An Undergraduate Allied Health Prerequisite Anatomy And Physiology Course, Alexandra A. Vita, Emily A. Royse, Nicholas A. Pullen
Teaching & Assessment Symposium Recordings
Anatomy and Physiology (A&P) is one of the final biology prerequisites undergraduate students enroll in before progressing in nursing and allied health degree programs. Using design-based research methods to examine our backward design approach, we defined learning objectives for an advanced A&P lab course, created aligned assessments, and are implementing new activities iteratively over four semesters. We are evaluating student learning outcomes using a previously validated homeostasis concept inventory. Our preliminary results suggest that students experience persisting misconceptions about homeostasis despite instruction, but in future semesters, we aim to support student learning of physiology topics through problem-based learning.

Cash Transfers And Health, Sicong Sun, Jin Huang, Darrell Hudson, Michael Sherraden
Center for Social Development Research
Financial resources are known to affect health outcomes. Many types of social policies and programs, including social assistance and social insurance, have been implemented around the world to increase financial resources. As an overall term, we refer to these as cash transfers. In this article, we discuss whether, how, for whom, and to what extent purposeful cash transfers may improve health, both theoretically and empirically. The overall finding is that cash transfers are very positive, but as usual, there are many complexities and variations. Continuing research and policy innovation—for example, universal basic income and universal Child Development Accounts—are likely to …

Collagen prolyl 4-hydroxylase 1 (C-P4H1) is an α-ketoglutarate (α-KG)-dependent dioxygenase that catalyzes 4-hydroxylation of proline on collagen. C-P4H1-induced prolyl hydroxylation is required for proper collagen deposition and cancer metastasis. Therefore, targeting C-P4H1 is considered a potential therapeutic strategy for collagen-related cancer progression and metastasis. However, no C-P4H1 inhibitors are available for clinical testing, and the high content assay is currently not available for C-P4H1 inhibitor screening. In the present study, we developed a high-throughput screening assay by quantifying succinate, a byproduct of C-P4H-catalyzed hydroxylation. C-P4H1 is the major isoform of collagen prolyl 4-hydroxylases (CP4Hs) that contributes the majority prolyl 4-hydroxylase …

International Journal of Speleology
White-Nose Disease (WND) has killed millions of hibernating bats in the US and Canada. Its causative agent, the fungus Pseudogymnoascus destructans was introduced to North America, but is native to Europe and Asia, where it is not associated with mass mortality. Although it is nearly impossible to eradicate an emerging wildlife disease, research on P. destructans spread mechanisms can aid in prevention of new introductions and development of better environmental management strategies. It is of particular importance to quantify the potential role of people visiting caves (cavers, tourists, bat researchers, etc.) whom inadvertently move P. destructans spores between sites, and …

Human trichomoniasis, caused by the pathogenic parasitic protozoan Trichomonas vaginalis, is the most common non-viral sexually transmitted disease that contributes to reproductive morbidity in affected women and possibly to prostate cancer in men. Tritrichomonas foetus strains cause the disease trichomoniasis in farm animals (cattle, bulls, pigs) and diarrhea in domestic animals (cats and dogs). Because some T. vaginalis strains have become resistant to the widely used drug metronidazole, there is a need to develop alternative treatments, based on safe natural products that have the potential to replace and/or enhance the activity of lower doses of metronidazole. To help meet this …
