Mathematics & Statistics Faculty Works
Collective decision making is essential for multicellular and self-organized society coordination, but how this occurs when most of the individuals have limited knowledge of the external environment remains elusive. Using empirical data to inform a neuroscience-based firing-rate model, we found that integration of negative feedback and network dynamics in a honeybee, Apis mellifera, hive demonstrates strong similarities to the neuronal interactions of the human brain, where very brief perturbations of feedback in the system result in more rapid and accurate decisions. We show that honey bees used an inhibitory ‘stop’ signal towards dancing honey bees that reduced both waggle dancing …

Mechanisms Of Motivational Interviewing For Antiretroviral Medication Adherence In People With Hiv., Ailbhe Hogan, Delwyn Catley, Kathy Goggin, Michael Evangeli
Manuscripts, Articles, Book Chapters and Other Papers
Antiretroviral therapy (ART) for HIV requires strict regimen adherence. Motivational interviewing (MI) can improve ART adherence. MI process studies have rarely focussed on ART adherence. Such studies may facilitate MI modifications to improve outcomes. This study employed a single group pre and post-test design with 62 adults with HIV (16 female; mean age 40 years). Therapist use of MI-consistent (MICO) methods, MI spirit, and client change and sustain talk were coded from an MI session. Relationships were assessed with ART schedule adherence. MICO methods positively correlated with change and sustain talk and were negatively associated with proportion of change talk. …

David Versus Godzilla: Bigger Stones, Jerry Ellig, Richard Williams
Dickinson Law Review (2017-Present)
For four decades, U.S. Presidents have issued executive orders requiring agencies to conduct comprehensive regulatory impact analysis (RIA) for significant regulations to ensure that regulatory decisions solve social problems in a cost-beneficial manner. Yet experience demonstrates that agency RIAs often fail to live up to the standards enunciated in executive orders and Office of Management and Budget (OMB) guidance. The Office of Information and Regulatory Affairs (OIRA) oversees agency compliance with the executive orders, but OIRA is about half the size it was when it was established in 1980. Regulatory agency staff outnumber OIRA staff by a ratio of 3600 …

The key role to maintain equilibrium between microbial challenge and host response is played by nutrition, which is also important in various chronic diseases like cardiovascular disease, type 2 diabetes & rheumatoid arthritis. An individual’s baseline inflammatory position is influenced by macronutrients & micronutrients which modulate pro inflammatory and anti-inflammatory cascades. The aim of this review is to give an insight on mechanism of action of various macronutrients, micronutrients and some of the trace elements with their positive effects in resolution of various chronic diseases such as diabetes, cardiovascular, cancer and periodontal diseases. Thus dietary changes can be associated with …

Volunteer Outcomes And Impact: The Contributions And Consequences Of Volunteering In 4-H, Steven Worker, Dorina Espinoza, Car Mun Kok, Charles Go
Journal of Youth Development
Youth development volunteers are relied upon by many youth organizations to deliver educational programming, and consequently, fulfill organizations’ missions. Our study explored the consequences of volunteering in youth services by focusing on volunteer outcomes (consequences of volunteering on the volunteer) and volunteer impacts (volunteers’ contributions to the organization). We collected 1,245 open-ended responses to 2 questions from adults who served as volunteers in the University of California 4-H Youth Development Program. We applied iterative inductive thematic analysis without a pre-existing coding scheme to each question independently. Volunteers described their impacts on 4-H as expanding and maintaining programs for children, providing …

An Investigation Of The Effect Of Trunk Musculature On The Lumbar Spine Injury During A High-Speed Frontal Central Crash, Nan Lin
Master's Theses (2009 -)
Motor vehicle crashes have been a leading cause of fatalities and injuries worldwide. Owing to new protection systems, the occurrence of injuries has been decreasing in recent years. On the contrary, the incidence of lumbar spine injuries in frontal crashes has been increasing as a function of the vehicle model year. However, only a few studies focused on lumbar spine injuries in vehicle crashes. Therefore, the mechanism of lumbar spine injuries has not been understood thoroughly. Muscle contraction is one of the factors that influence the risk of lumbar spine injuries as occupants tend to brace their muscles during a …

Analyzing Adverse Events From Publicly Available Web Sources, Alexander Salamun
Master's Theses (2009 -)
Data mining for drug-reaction associations is a major topic in the pharmaceutical industry. Historically the focus has been on using privately owned and maintained datasets consisting of information that has been transformed via the FDA Adverse Event Reporting System (FAERS) and privatized reporting systems that house the data from clinical trials. Our focus will be on building a pipeline that demonstrates an open source solution for building a drug’s safety profile from data collection through signal detection. In contrast this pipeline primarily uses the openFDA and social media data available through Reddit with all analysis being done in the R …
Food Deserts Of Las Vegas: An Overview With A Vertical Solution, David Sinclair
Food Deserts Of Las Vegas: An Overview With A Vertical Solution, David Sinclair
Honors College Faculty Research
National food insecurity is a persistent and growing problem, a problem that especially affects children.
This is a major problem that should be an unacceptable state of affairs: that arguably the richest and most powerful nation in human history should fail in providing such a basic need to its citizens. It is not an exaggeration to state the adults and children of Nevada are starving at an alarming rate. Clark County, Nevada, especially is not only a hot spot for hunger but is also seeing increased hunger due to the COVID pandemic and the failure of all levels of government …

Decision-Making Tree For Prioritizing Racial Equity In Resource Allocation, Jamie Bain, Noelle Harden, Stephanie Heim
Journal of Extension
Within University of Minnesota Extension's health and nutrition program area, we created and are using a decision-making tree to prioritize our work with communities of color through equitable decision-making practices. The tool is currently used to help grant administrators winnow down a pool of applicants for a participatory grant-making program called the Action Learning Seed Fund. In this article, we draw on our experiences with creating and using the tool to explore its potential application for advancing equitable decision making in other areas of Extension work.

Preserving Cultural Heritage Through The Valorization Of Cordillera Heirloom Rice In The Philippines, Subir Bairagi, Marie Claire Custodio, Alvaro Durand-Morat, Matty Demont
Agricultural Economics and Agribusiness Faculty Publications and Presentations
For centuries, heirloom rice varieties have been grown on the terraces of the Cordillera Mountains of Luzon, Philippines, terroirs known for their significant historical, cultural, and aesthetic values. However, heritage heirloom rice farming is gradually being abandoned, mainly because of its lower productivity and the struggle of the sector to create a sustainable niche market for heirloom rice by branding its cultural, social, and nutritional values. We propose several demand-side intervention strategies for the valorization of heirloom rice. To support the development of a segmented marketing strategy for heritage farming, we provide evidence on urban consumers’ willingness to purchase heirloom …
Validation And Application Of A Novel Target-Based Whole-Cell Screen To Identify Antifungal Compounds, Christian Alexander Dejarnette
Validation And Application Of A Novel Target-Based Whole-Cell Screen To Identify Antifungal Compounds, Christian Alexander Dejarnette
Theses and Dissertations (ETD)
Traditional approaches to drug discovery are inefficient and have several key limitations that constrain our capacity to rapidly identify and develop novel experimental therapeutics. To address this, we have devised a second-generation target-based whole-cell screening assay based on the principles of competitive fitness, which can rapidly identify target-specific and physiologically-active compounds. Briefly, strains expressing high, intermediate, and low levels of a preselected target protein were constructed, tagged with spectrally distinct fluorescent proteins (FPs), and mixed together. The pooled strains were then grown in the presence of various small molecules, and the relative growth of each strain within the mixed culture …

Institute on Disability
This supplemental report provides additional information on breastfeeding initiation and duration, and a woman’s job category (industry) as reported to the NH Division of Vital Records Administration via the NH birth certificate. De-identified responses in the NH birth certificate data linked to the responses in the Pregnancy Risk Assessment Monitoring System (PRAMS) survey data provided the opportunity to better understand duration of breastfeeding by a woman’s industry. The findings may be useful to policymakers and employers when framed in terms of the health and economic benefits of breastfeeding to inform workplace policy formation.
