An Investigation Into Magnetic Structures In The Solarwind Plasma Using Ulysses Data, Jack Mcdonald Nov 2020

An Investigation Into Magnetic Structures In The Solarwind Plasma Using Ulysses Data, Jack Mcdonald

Student Research Symposium (SRS)

The solar environment has long been studied from Earth by the likes of Richard Carrington and company. Since the dawn of the space age, spacecraft have been sent to space to learn more about the solar wind. The European Space Agency’s (ESA) Ulysses spacecraft, launched in 1990, was designed to observe the sun from a polar vantage point. With the instruments on board, Ulysses gave space and plasma physicists a unique opportunity to study the plasma around the sun. We have developed search algorithms to detect shocks and solitons within the solar wind using data from Ulysses. The algorithms can detect …

Active Stabilization Using Proportional Control, Kalen Martins De Oliveira Nov 2020

Active Stabilization Using Proportional Control, Kalen Martins De Oliveira

Student Research Symposium (SRS)

Model rockets suffer from a wide variance of flight patterns due to imperfections in construction, launch equipment, and weather. This reality can make the recovery of rockets or their payloads more difficult when launching within the vicinity of buildings and trees. A functioning stabilization system would be useful in increasing the predictability of a rocket’s flight. A canard-based stabilization system using proportional control will allow for its manufacture by groups or individuals who lack resources beyond a high-school education. To demonstrate that such a capability is within reach of high-school students, a model in which to control a small rocket …

A Fast Hybrid Transform Algorithm For Beam Digitization, Levi Lingsch, S. Perera, Arjuna Madanayake

Student Research Symposium (SRS)

The process of digitization - the conversion of analog information into a discrete signal - is essential to the function of millions of devices, from cell phones to particle accelerators. This is what allows computers to understand and process the physical world. While short signals are easily processed, longer signals can require an exponentially growing amount of computational operations. For this reason, it is necessary to develop fast algorithms which can efficiently digitize large signals. Such algorithms will allow for the production of less expensive yet more powerful computer circuitry that will open up stronger channels for communication and scientific …

Optimizing A One Dof Robot Without A Mathematical Model Using A Genetic Algorithm, Daniel Wilczak, Dylan Ballback

Student Research Symposium (SRS)

The purpose of the present study was to design a flight control system with no pre-determined mathematical model, but instead using a genetic algorithm to maintain the optimal altitude. The study is done through a quantitative empirical research method. In the process of conducting the research, we found that programming a genetic algorithm was cumbersome for novice users to implement. Due to this, we created and released an open source Python package called EasyGA. An initial population of 10 chromosomes and 5 generations were used during the trial. The throttle value of the device had an associated gene value of …

Are Electric Cars The Future?, Nick Gable Nov 2020

Are Electric Cars The Future?, Nick Gable

English Department: Research for Change - Wicked Problems in Our World

My paper is about switching to electric cars for transportation. The end of fossil fuels is soon, and we must preserve them. We must cut down on fossil fuel use to save the environment from pollution. I use statistics on emissions and pollution from conventional cars and explain why we need to switch to electric cars sooner rather than later. I argue that there should be stipulations by the government regarding electric cars and conventional cars on the lot. I also say that we should start producing lots of electric cars as soon as possible.

Using Item Option Characteristics Curve To Analyze Misconceptions On Chemical Reactions Of Pre-Service Chemistry Teachers In Indonesia, Hilman Qudratuddarsi

Student Works (2020-2029)

Chemical reactions are an important component when studying chemistry but it is difficult to master them. The presence of three-level of representations (macro, sub-micro and symbolic) in chemistry add to this difficulty and as a result, misconceptions do take place. Misconceptions interfere with cognitive development of students and prevent them from having meaningful learning experiences. Thus, identifying accurately these misconceptions are paramount. These misconceptions are analysed using two-tier multiple-choice questions (2TMC). Some researchers argue its limiting diagnostic power and introduced three-tier and four-tier multiple-choice questions (3TMC and 4TMC). However, 3TMC and 4TMC have its own challenges in term of time …

The Utilization Of Shared Energy Storage In Energy Systems: Design, Modeling And Optimization, Rui Dai Nov 2020

The Utilization Of Shared Energy Storage In Energy Systems: Design, Modeling And Optimization, Rui Dai

USF Tampa Graduate Theses and Dissertations

Energy storage (ES) plays a significant role in modern smart grids and energy systems. With the advances of ES technologies, efficiently applying ES to energy systems has become the bottleneck for achieving the benefits of ES. The traditional approach of utilizing ES is the so-called distributed framework in which there is a separate ES for each individual user. Due to the inherent limits in the distributed framework such as cost inefficiency and space limitations, many studies have promoted to utilize a shared ES in energy systems to further exploit the potentials of ES. However, current studies always focus on maximizing …
