Profiling And Identification Of Web Applications In Computer Network, Hussein Oudah Jan 2020

Profiling And Identification Of Web Applications In Computer Network, Hussein Oudah

School of Engineering, Computing and Mathematics Theses

Characterising network traffic is a critical step for detecting network intrusion or misuse. The traditional way to identify the application associated with a set of traffic flows uses port number and DPI (Deep Packet Inspection), but it is affected by the use of dynamic ports and encryption. The research community proposed models for traffic classification that determined the most important requirements and recommendations for a successful approach. The suggested alternatives could be categorised into four techniques: port-based, packet payload based, host behavioural, and statistical-based. The traditional way to identifying traffic flows typically focuses on using IANA assigned port numbers and …

The use of mobile devices in daily life has increased exponentially, leading to them occupying many essential aspects of people’s lives, such as replacing credit cards to make payments, and for various forms of entertainment and social activities. Therefore, users have installed an enormous number of apps. These apps can collect and share a large amount of data, such as location data, images, videos, health data, and call logs, which are highly valuable and sensitive for users. Consequently, the use of apps raises a variety of privacy concerns regarding which app is allowed to access and share; to what degree …

Fall And Activity Detection Framework On A Robotic Platform For Older Person Care, Frederico Belmonte Klein Jan 2020

Fall And Activity Detection Framework On A Robotic Platform For Older Person Care, Frederico Belmonte Klein

School of Engineering, Computing and Mathematics Theses

This thesis describes the classification human activity for the purpose of detecting falls, later extended to multiple activities. This was done with the final intention of implementing a robotic companion for older persons that can provide a certain level of automated care in case of some sort of emergency. The complexity of this work, combined with restrictions of the robot, motivated a creation of an infrastructure abstraction to allow deferred (decentralized) processing. The initial work was done by implementing classifiers that work use pre-processed skeleton data extracted from RGBD sensors and implements some steps in order to make classification robust …

A Novel Framework For Improving Cyber Security Management And Awareness For Home Users, Fayez Ghazai S Alotaibi

School of Engineering, Computing and Mathematics Theses

A wide and increasing range of different technologies, devices, platforms, applications and services are being used every day by home users. In parallel, home users are also experiencing a range of different online threats and attacks. Indeed, home users are increasingly being targeted as they lack the knowledge and awareness about potential threats and how to protect themselves. The increase in technologies and platforms also increases the burden upon a user to understand how to apply security across the differing technologies, operating systems and applications. This results in managing the security across their technology portfolio increasingly more troublesome and time-consuming. …

Qoe-Centric Control And Management Of Multimedia Services In Software Defined And Virtualized Networks, Alcardo Alex Barakabitze Jan 2020

Qoe-Centric Control And Management Of Multimedia Services In Software Defined And Virtualized Networks, Alcardo Alex Barakabitze

School of Engineering, Computing and Mathematics Theses

Multimedia services consumption has increased tremendously since the deployment of 4G/LTE networks. Mobile video services (e.g., YouTube and Mobile TV) on smart devices are expected to continue to grow with the emergence and evolution of future networks such as 5G. The end user’s demand for services with better quality from service providers has triggered a trend towards Quality of Experience (QoE) - centric network management through efficient utilization of network resources. However, existing network technologies are either unable to adapt to diverse changing network conditions or limited in available resources. This has posed challenges to service providers for provisioning of …

Activity-Based User Authentication Using Smartwatches, Neamah Hasan Al-Naffakh Jan 2020

Activity-Based User Authentication Using Smartwatches, Neamah Hasan Al-Naffakh

School of Engineering, Computing and Mathematics Theses

Smartwatches, which contain an accelerometer and gyroscope, have recently been used to implement gait and gesture- based biometrics; however, the prior studies have long-established drawbacks. For example, data for both training and evaluation was captured from single sessions (which is not realistic and can lead to overly optimistic performance results), and in cases when the multi-day scenario was considered, the evaluation was often either done improperly or the results are very poor (i.e., greater than 20% of EER). Moreover, limited activities were considered (i.e., gait or gestures), and data captured within a controlled environment which tends to be far less …

Honeypot For Wireless Sensor Networks, Jürgen Markert Jan 2020

Honeypot For Wireless Sensor Networks, Jürgen Markert

School of Engineering, Computing and Mathematics Theses

People have understood that computer systems need safeguarding and require knowledge of security principles for their protection. While this has led to solutions for system components such as malware-protection, firewalls and intrusion detection systems, the ubiquitous usage of tiny microcomputers appeared at the same time. A new interconnectivity is on the rise in our lives. Things become “smart” and increasingly build new networks of devices. In this context the wireless sensor networks here interact with users and also, vice versa as well; unprivileged users able to interact with the wireless sensor network may harm the privileged user as a result. …

Smoothed Particle Hydrodynamics Simulations Of Model-Scale Tsunami Waves, Ruaa Wana Jan 2020

Smoothed Particle Hydrodynamics Simulations Of Model-Scale Tsunami Waves, Ruaa Wana

School of Engineering, Computing and Mathematics Theses

Smoothed Particle Hydrodynamics (SPH) is a meshfree, Lagrangian, particle method. It was first invented to solve astrophysical problems, but has since been developed and used to model a wide variety of fluid flows. Also, it is particularly well suited to simulating flow problems that have large deformations or contain free surfaces. This thesis describes in detail the SPH method and its application to single phase models of flows. Fortran code has been written to implement the method. To validate and establish SPH parameters to use, the SPH method has been used in different flow simulations, in particular, lid-driven cavity flow, …

Network-Based Management For Optimising Video Delivery, Ali Edan Taher Alissa

School of Engineering, Computing and Mathematics Theses

The past decade has witnessed a massive increase in Internet video traffic. The Cisco Visual Forecast index indicates that, by 2022, (79%) of the world's mobile data traffic will be video traffic. In order to increase the video streaming market revenue, service providers need to provide services to the end-users characterised by high Quality of Experience (QoE). However, delivering good-quality video services is a very challenging task due to the stringent constraints related to bandwidth and latency requirements in video streaming. Among the available streaming services, HTTP adaptive streaming (HAS) has become the de facto standard for multimedia delivery over …

Proactive Biometric-Enabled Forensic Imprinting System, A Alruban Jan 2020

Proactive Biometric-Enabled Forensic Imprinting System, A Alruban

School of Engineering, Computing and Mathematics Theses

Insider threats are a significant security issue. The last decade has witnessed countless instances of data loss and exposure in which leaked data have become publicly available and easily accessible. Losing or disclosing sensitive data or confidential information may cause substantial financial and reputational damage to a company. Therefore, preventing or responding to such incidents has become a challenging task. Whilst more recent research has focused explicitly on the problem of insider misuse, it has tended to concentrate on the information itself—either through its protection or approaches to detecting leakage. Although digital forensics has become a de facto standard in …

Author Verification Of Electronic Messaging Systems, Abdulaziz Altamimi Jan 2020

Author Verification Of Electronic Messaging Systems, Abdulaziz Altamimi

School of Engineering, Computing and Mathematics Theses

Messaging systems have become a hugely popular new paradigm for sending and delivering text messages; however, online messaging platforms have also become an ideal place for criminals due to their anonymity, ease of use and low cost. Therefore, the ability to verify the identity of individuals involved in criminal activity is becoming increasingly important. The majority of research in this area has focused on traditional authorship problems that deal with single-domain datasets and large bodies of text. Few research studies have sought to explore multi-platform author verification as a possible solution to problems around forensics and security. Therefore, this research …

Zechipc: Time Series Interpolation Method Based On Lebesgue Sampling, Luis Miralles-Pechuán, Muhammad Atif Qureshi, Matthieu Bellucci, Brian Mac Namee

Books/Book Chapters

In this paper, we present an interpolation method based on Lebesgue sampling that could help to develop systems based time series more efficiently. Our methods can transmit times series, frequently used in health monitoring, with the same level of accuracy but using much fewer data. Our method is based in Lebesgue sampling, which collects information depending on the values of the signal (e.g. the signal output is sampled when it crosses specific limits). Lebesgue sampling contains additional information about the shape of the signal in-between two sampled points. Using this information would allow generating an interpolated signal closer to the …

Towards A Context-Aware Knowledge Model For Smart Service Systems, Thang Le Dinh, Thanh Thoa Pham Thi, Cuong Pham-Nguyen, Hoai Nam Le Nguyen

Conference papers

The advancement of the Internet of things, big data, and mobile computing leads to the need for smart services that enable the context awareness and the adaptability to their changing contexts. Today, designing a smart service system is a complex task due to the lack of an adequate model support in awareness and pervasive environment. In this paper, we present a context-aware knowledge model for smart service systems that organizes the domain and context-aware knowledge into knowledge components based on the three levels of services: Services, Service system and Network of service systems. The context-aware knowledge model for smart service …

Covid -19 And The Need For Robust Risk Control Strategies: Can Ich-Q9 Help?, Umit Kartoglu, Kevin O'Donnell, James Vesper Jan 2020

Covid -19 And The Need For Robust Risk Control Strategies: Can Ich-Q9 Help?, Umit Kartoglu, Kevin O'Donnell, James Vesper

Level 3

The COVID-19 pandemic requires robust risk control strategies; these should be multi-layered, science-based and subjected to effectiveness checks and formal reviews, to identify any unintended consequences. They should be supported by communications informed by an understanding of biases and risk perception. While developing such strategies for COVID-19 is difficult, given the scale of the problem and the diversity of stakeholders, the approach to Quality Risk Management (QRM) used by the pharmaceutical industry provides governments and public health officials with a ready-made framework to arrive at such control strategies. This approach is set out in the ICH Guideline on Quality Risk …

Understanding The Concept Of Formality In Quality Risk Management, Kevin O'Donnell, Deirdre Tobin, Stephanie Butler, Ghada Haddad, Donal Kelleher Jan 2020

Understanding The Concept Of Formality In Quality Risk Management, Kevin O'Donnell, Deirdre Tobin, Stephanie Butler, Ghada Haddad, Donal Kelleher

Level 3

Formality in Quality Risk Management (QRM) is an interesting concept. What makes a QRM activity ‘formal’ and what makes one ‘informal’? A simplistic viewpoint might be that formal is when a QRM tool is used to manage risks, and informal is when no such tool is used. But is it that simple? And are there different degrees of formality in QRM - is it a spectrum, or is it a binary concept? These questions are explored in this paper. Since the introduction of ICH Q9 in 2005, there have been discussions in the pharmaceutical industry and between regulators regarding the …

Potential Of Raman Spectroscopy For The Analysis Of Plasma/Serum In The Liquid State: Recent Advances, Drishya Rajan Parachalil, Jennifer Mcintyre, Hugh Byrne

Articles

There is compelling evidence in the literature to support the application of Raman spectroscopy for analysis of bodily fluids in their native liquid state. Naturally, the strategies described in the literature for Raman spectroscopic analysis of liquid samples have advantages and disadvantages. Herein, recent advances in the analysis of plasma/serum in the liquid state are reviewed. The potential advantages of Raman analysis in the liquid form over the commonly employed infrared absorption analysis in the dried droplet form are initially highlighted. Improvements in measurement protocols based on inverted microscopic geometries, clinically adaptable substrates, data preprocessing and analysis, and applications for …

Articles

Attenuated total reflectance-infrared (ATR-IR) spectroscopy is a robust tool for molecular characterisation of matter. Applied to semi-solid formulations, it enables rapid and reliable data collection without pre-analytical requirements. Based on nano-encapsulated Omegalight®, a skin-lightening active cosmetic ingredient (ACI), incorporated in a hydrogel, it is first demonstrated that, despite the high water content and the chemical complexity of the samples (i.e. number of ingredients), the spectral features of the ACI can be detected and monitored. Secondly, with a total of 105 samples divided into a training set (n = 60) and an unknown set (n = 45) covering a …

Articles

Oral Squamous Cells Carcinoma (OSCC) is characterised by the risk of recurrence and the onset of a refractoriness response to chemotherapy drugs. These phenomena have been recently related to a subpopulation of Cancer Stem Cells (CSCs), which have either an innate or acquired drug resistance, triggered by chemotherapy treatments. In this light, to precisely target chemotherapy regimens, it is essential to improve knowledge on CSCs, with a particular focus on their molecular features. In this work, a subpopulation of CSCs, isolated by tumour sphere formation from primary OSCC cells, were treated with cisplatin for 16, 24 and 48 hours and …

K-Means And Hierarchical Cluster Analysis As Segmentation Algorithms Of Ftir Hyperspectral Images Collected From Cutaneous Tissue, Cassio Lima, Luciana Correa, Hugh Byrne, Denise Zezell

Conference papers

Fourier Transform Infrared (FTIR) spectroscopy is a rapid and label-free analytical technique whose potential as a diagnostic tool has been well demonstrated. The combination of spectroscopy and microscopy technologies enable wide-field scanning of a sample, providing a hyperspectral image with tens of thousands of spectra in a few minutes. In order to increase the information content of FTIR images, different clustering algorithms have been proposed as segmentation methods. However, systematic comparative tests of these techniques are still missing. Thus, the present paper aims to compare the ability of K-means Cluster Analysis (KMCA) and Hierarchical Cluster Analysis (HCA) as clustering algorithms …

Consciousness As A Factor In Evolution, Kenneth A. Augustyn Jan 2020

Consciousness As A Factor In Evolution, Kenneth A. Augustyn

Michigan Tech Publications, Part 1

What I call the mind began as a non-conscious robotic biochemical process control system in the very earliest forms of life. As life evolved, problems in control became more difficult and exceeded the computational capabilities of the organisms. Nature discovered a means of transcending computable physical processes resulting in non-computational subjective mental capabilities that, while still not conscious, had a degree of genuine autonomy from the physical world. These autonomous subjective wants and goals now affected the course of (but not the mechanism of) evolution. The integrated amalgam of robotic and transrobotic unconscious capabilities eventually gave rise to consciousness, which …

Vehicle Exhaust Remote Sensing Device Method To Screen Vehicles For Evaporative Running Loss Emissions, Gary A. Bishop, Timothy H. Defries, James A. Sidebottom, James M. Kemper Jan 2020

Vehicle Exhaust Remote Sensing Device Method To Screen Vehicles For Evaporative Running Loss Emissions, Gary A. Bishop, Timothy H. Defries, James A. Sidebottom, James M. Kemper

Fuel Efficiency Automobile Test Publications

Vehicle hydrocarbon (HC) emissions can be emitted from either tailpipe or non-tailpipe locations and understanding their fleet apportionment is important for successful air pollution policy. Vehicles initially misidentified as having elevated tailpipe HC emissions first indicated that roadside exhaust sensors could detect the presence of evaporative HC emissions as increased noise in the HC/carbon dioxide (CO2) correlation measurement. The 90th percentile of the largest residual of the HC/CO2 correlation is defined as a running loss index (RLI) for each measurement. An RLI that is three standard deviations or greater above the instruments noise indicates possible evaporative …

In the title molecule, C22H16O, the indanone ring system is approximately planar with a dihedral angle between the fused rings of 5.13 (14)°. Two benzene rings are linked together at one side of a double bond, sitting on either side of the indanone ring system and making dihedral angles of 70.30 (12) and 44.74 (13)° with it. In the crystal, hydrogen bonding is not present, but weak C—H⋯π or π–π interactions occur and molecules form a sheet-like structure in the bc plane.

Pilot Scale Pyrolysis Of Activated Sludge Waste From Milk Processing Factory, Marzena Kwapinska, Alen Horvat, Yupeng Liu, James Leahy Jan 2020

Pilot Scale Pyrolysis Of Activated Sludge Waste From Milk Processing Factory, Marzena Kwapinska, Alen Horvat, Yupeng Liu, James Leahy

Articles

The majority of the sludge from the treatment of wastewater in milk processing plants is land spread. The drawbacks of land spreading include local oversupply due to high transport costs, which results in sludge being spread on lands in the vicinity of the dairy factories. Local oversupply can lead to accumulation of certain substances in soil through annual application over many years. Therefore, in the long term, there is a need for alternative methods to recover energy and nutrients from increasing volumes of sludge generated from dairy processing. Pyrolysis ofers a potential alternative to land spreading, which can reduce health …
