Enhanced Covalent Interface, Crosslinked Network And Gas Barrier Property Of Functionalized Graphene Oxide/Styrene-Butadiene Rubber Composites Triggered By Thiol-Ene Click Reaction, Long Zheng, Stephen Jerrams, Tian Su, Zongchao Xu, Liqun Zhang, Li Liu, Shipeng Wen

The high gas barrier property of a rubber composite is of great significance for reducing the exhaust gas emissions due to tire rolling resistance and hence the contribution this factor makes to environmental protection. Enhanced covalent interfaces and crosslinked networks are crucial to the gas barrier property of rubber composites. In this research, γ-mercaptopropyltriethoxysilane (MPS) modified GO (MGO)/styrene-butadiene rubber (SBR) composites were prepared by a synergetic strategy of latex compounding method and thiol-ene click reaction. It was found that the mercapto groups in MGO reacted with the vinyl groups in SBR molecules through thiol-ene click reaction during the crosslinking process …

Fish acute toxicity tests are conducted as part of regulatory hazard identification and risk-assessment packages for industrial chemicals and plant protection products. The aim of these tests is to determine the concentration which would be lethal to 50% of the animals treated. These tests are therefore associated with suffering in the test animals, and Organisation for Economic Co-operation and Development test guideline 203 (fish, acute toxicity) studies are the most widely conducted regulatory vertebrate ecotoxicology tests for prospective chemical safety assessment. There is great scope to apply the 3Rs principles-the reduction, refinement, and replacement of animals-in this area of testing. …

Characterisation Of Crack Tip Fields—Cctf5, Michael Vormwald, Neil James, Youshi Hong, Luca Susmel, Francesco Iacoviello
School of Engineering, Computing and Mathematics
Single parameter characterisation of the crack/notch tip field using fracture mechanics parameters like K, J, or CTOD has been extremely powerful in advancing predictive technologies for critical or subcritical crack growth. It has also become clear over the last decades that single parameter approaches have limitations particularly in dealing with crack growth phenomena arising from crack tip shielding, often resulting from the plastic enclave surrounding a crack. Influences of this enclave on the crack tip stress field ahead of the crack are maximised during cyclic loading. In the case of a parameter like the stress intensity factor that characterises the …
Weld Solidification Cracking In A 304l Stainless Steel Water Tank, Mn James, L Matthews, Dg Hattingh
Weld Solidification Cracking In A 304l Stainless Steel Water Tank, Mn James, L Matthews, Dg Hattingh
School of Engineering, Computing and Mathematics
Type 304L stainless steel alloy is known to be highly resistant to solidification cracking. In the present case the particular design of the welded seams in a simple 200 litre water tank, along with the likely manner in which the closing welds were made, has led to an interesting example of interdendritic hot cracking in 304L GTA welded using a 309L filler metal. The paper presents a short introduction to hot cracking in austenitic stainless steels and uses the fractographic evidence to demonstrate that this form of cracking has occurred. The cracking has occurred primarily from excessive residual restraint stresses …

How Can Technology Support Ageing In Place In Healthy Older Adults? A Systematic Review, A Ollevier, G Aguiar, M Palomino, Is Simpelaere
School of Engineering, Computing and Mathematics
Abstract Background Ageing in place has recently gained visibility in healthcare policies and services. Technology has the potential to facilitate independence at home. The objective of this systematic review is to identify technologies that have been rigorously evaluated for supporting the ageing in place of healthy older adults. As well we explored the methods in engagement with technology in healthy older adults. Methods Databases Pubmed, Scopus, PsycInfo and Cinahl were consulted for clinical controlled trials or randomised controlled trials between 2014 and 2019. Studies were included if they contained a technological intervention and focussed on supporting healthy older adults’ independent …

A novel stacking procedure is presented for volume phase holographic gratings (VPHGs) recorded in photopolymer material using Corning Willow Glass as a flexible substrate in order to achieve broader angular and spectral selectivity in a diffractive device with high efficiency for solar and LED applications. For the first time to our knowledge, we have shown a device designed for use with a white LED that has the same input and output angles and high efficiency when illuminated by different wavelengths. In this paper, two VPHGs were designed, experimentally recorded, and tested when illuminated at normal incidence. The experimental approach is …

School of Engineering, Computing and Mathematics
Decentralised environments with a high number of end-users and M2M devices used in several M2M services increasethe importance of a secure trust management and comprehensive trust evaluation system to avoid frauds from maliciousnodes. Blockchain, as part of the distributed ledger technology (DLT), helps to improve the overall security in a decentralised M2M community in various aspects. This research publication summarises several existing trust managementand evaluation approaches, concluding with their benefits and limitations. Besides these, it highlights the advantages ofthe distributed ledger technology with the focus on blockchain and consensus mechanisms. In this context, most relevantconsensus mechanisms are reviewed and an …

A significant challenge in modern computer security is the growing skill gap as intruder capabilities increase, making it necessary to begin automating elements of penetration testing so analysts can contend with the growing number of cyber threats. In this paper, we attempt to assist human analysts by automating a single host penetration attack. To do so, a smart agent performs different attack sequences to find vulnerabilities in a target system. As it does so, it accumulates knowledge, learns new attack sequences and improves its own internal penetration testing logic. As a result, this agent (AgentPen for simplicity) is able to …

Master-Field Simulations Of O(A)-Improved Lattice Qcd: Algorithms, Stability And Exactness, Anthony Francis, Patrick Fritzsch, Martin Lüscher, Antonio Rago
School of Engineering, Computing and Mathematics
In master-field simulations of lattice QCD, the expectation values of interest are obtained from a single or at most a few representative gauge-field configurations on very large lattices. If the light quarks are included, the generation of these fields using standard techniques is however challenging in view of various algorithmic instabilities and precision issues. Ways to overcome these problems are described here for the case of the O(α)-improved Wilson formulation of lattice QCD and the viability of the proposed measures is then checked in extensive simulations of the theory with flavours of quarks.

Maturity Model For Healthcare Cloud Security, Opeoluwa Ore Akinsanya
School of Engineering, Computing and Mathematics Theses
Management of security across eHealth cloud services is a major organizational challenge that healthcare organizations seek to resolve in order to aid their trusts in cloud and increase the adoption of cloud services in healthcare. The organizational challenges regarding implementations of technical security solutions are the major limiting factors for the adoption of the eHealth cloud. As such, the aim of this research will focus on developing a security maturity model, which will help healthcare organizations to provide a description of the application of their cloud security services, and an assessment and improvement of their cloud security services over time, …

User Profiling Based On Network Application Traffic Monitoring, Faisal Shaman
User Profiling Based On Network Application Traffic Monitoring, Faisal Shaman
School of Engineering, Computing and Mathematics Theses
There is increasing interest in identifying users and behaviour profiling from network traffic metadata for traffic engineering and security monitoring. However, user identification and behaviour profiling in real-time network management remains a challenge, as the activities and underlying interactions of network applications are constantly changing. User behaviour is also changing and adapting in parallel, due to changes in the online interaction environment. A major challenge is how to detect user activity among generic network traffic in terms of identifying the user and his/her changing behaviour over time. Another issue is that relying only on computer network information (Internet Protocol [IP] …
