A Comparison Of Open And Closed Chain Knee Extension Exercises On Patterns Of Quadriceps Hypertrophy, Domenic Angelino Jan 2020

A Comparison Of Open And Closed Chain Knee Extension Exercises On Patterns Of Quadriceps Hypertrophy, Domenic Angelino

Open Access Master's Theses

Resistance training causes hypertrophy, however, the magnitude of muscle growth varies along the length of the muscle (i.e. proximo-distally). For running based athletes and those dependent on movement about the hip, preferential proximal hypertrophy of the quadriceps femoris (the primary knee extensor) shifts the center of mass (CoM) of the thigh closer to the hip which provides a direct biomechanical advantage by decreasing the moment of inertia of the high about the hip (I). This in turn can increase movement velocity and economy and has been observed in studies using mathematical modeling and when comparing elite national level …

Associations Of Weight Dissatisfaction On Diet Quality, Percent Body Fat, And Physical Activity In College Students, Kelsey Mcnulty Jan 2020

Associations Of Weight Dissatisfaction On Diet Quality, Percent Body Fat, And Physical Activity In College Students, Kelsey Mcnulty

Open Access Master's Theses

Statement of the Problem: As overweight and obesity rates continue to rise in the United States (U.S.), the social pressure to fit an impractical ideal body weight and image influences the satisfaction college-aged students have of themselves and can lead to higher body weight dissatisfaction (BWD). An increase in BWD has been associated with poorer dietary habits, such as lower intake of nutrient-dense foods like fruits and vegetables, excessive or lacking physical activity, as well as higher body mass index (BMI) and higher percent body fat (%BF). Since BWD has been determined as a contributor to increased risk of disordered …

Mechanical Response Of Water-Filled Drop-Stitch Inflatable Structures, Dylan Stephanik Jan 2020

Mechanical Response Of Water-Filled Drop-Stitch Inflatable Structures, Dylan Stephanik

Open Access Master's Theses

Inflatable structures are essential for a wide variety of applications due to their lightweight and high stiffness capabilities. Having a low storage volume, they can quickly be pressurized to produce a rigid and rapidly deployed structure. Due to their increasing popularity, research on air-inflated drop-stitch structures is becoming more common. However, little work has examined liquid-inflated structures. There are unresolved questions about the effect that liquids have on the materials and a lack of engineering data for designing components that are to be pressurized with a liquid.

The objective of this research is to determine the mechanical response of a …

An Inverse Method For Material Property Derivation Using Digital Image Correlation And The Finite Element Method, Sean D. Scro Jan 2020

An Inverse Method For Material Property Derivation Using Digital Image Correlation And The Finite Element Method, Sean D. Scro

Open Access Master's Theses

The objective of this research is to develop a standard operating procedure for correlating uniaxial and biaxial digital image correlation (DIC) data and results from numerical finite element analysis (FEA) simulations to determine material elastic properties. An inverse method is developed in which iterative data matching is achieved using the software package, Isight™. The method is applied to characterize the elastic properties of Lexan polycarbonate sheet and a nominal carbon epoxy composite. Displacement and strain fields obtained from DIC data from simulated uniaxial tension and biaxial DIC experiments serve as the target parameter to match in iterative testing where the …

Patterns, Or No Patterns, That Is The Question, Mehrsa Khaleghikarahrodi Jan 2020

Patterns, Or No Patterns, That Is The Question, Mehrsa Khaleghikarahrodi

Open Access Master's Theses

To reduce the threshold of EV adoption, the electric vehicle supply equipment (EVSE) infrastructure needs to fit the EV systems to its users to satisfy their expectations. There needs to be a reflection of user behavior variability in the EVSE infrastructure to improve its functionality. Individual users’ charging actions, over time, construct a charging behavioral pattern that distinguishes the users from one another. This research analyses the EV users’ unique behavioral charging patterns. Therefore, profiles of users’ charging actions are clustered to investigate the unique behavioral patterns. An unsupervised clustering algorithm (i.e., K-means) is implemented through three distance metrics (i.e., …

The Leviathan: How To Move 2.9 Million Government Documents Offsite, Univeristy Of Texas At Arlington Libraries Jan 2020

The Leviathan: How To Move 2.9 Million Government Documents Offsite, Univeristy Of Texas At Arlington Libraries

UTA Libraries Staff Publications - Archive

The concept of moving a university's historic, 2.9 million item government documents collection offsite was daunting. The actual move of the collection took 24 months. In this move, much was learned about developing a project management plan, including: consult the literature early, anticipate confusion points within the collection, discuss wear-and-tear issues, and understand the effect the move would have on service. The final move required 31 working days over five months of shifting. Afterward, it was found that the repercussions of a move especially on staff and reference work can often be more jarring than the move itself.

Journal of the Arkansas Academy of Science

We analyzed the energy content of seeds of common sunflowers (Helianthus annuus) obtained from the crops of scaled quail (Callipepla squamata) collected from plains-mesa sand-scrub habitat in Eddy and Lea counties, New Mexico. Seeds were removed from crops and dried for 48 hours at 60°C to remove moisture and to standardize masses. Seeds were then analyzed for gross caloric value (i.e., energy content) in an oxygen bomb calorimeter. Energy content of seeds of common sunflowers from New Mexico was greater than that of many seeds previously reported from the diet of scaled quail and other granivorous …

Helminth Parasites Of Eastern Screech Owl, Megascops Asio (Aves: Strigiformes: Strigidae) From Arkansas, Chris T. Mcallister, Henry W. Robison

Journal of the Arkansas Academy of Science

The eastern screech owl (Megascops asio) is a small owl that is relatively common in eastern North America. Nothing is known of the parasites of this owl in Arkansas. Here, we document 3 helminths from a single injured M. asio that subsequently died and was donated by a rehabilitation center for parasitic examination. Found were 2 digenetic trematodes, Brachylaima mcintoshi and Neodiplostomumamericanum, and a habronematid nematode, Excisa excisiformis. The former trematode represents a new host record for M. asio, and B. mcintoshi and E. excisiformis are reported from Arkansas for the first time.

Cost-Benefit Analysis Of Composting At The University Of Kentucky, Jennifer Sutton Jan 2020

Cost-Benefit Analysis Of Composting At The University Of Kentucky, Jennifer Sutton

MPA/MPP/MPFM Capstone Projects

This study is a cost-benefit analysis (CBA) of the University of Kentucky’s composting program. Food waste is collected from two major dining facilities on campus and composted at the university’s C. Oran Little Research Center in Woodford County. This CBA only considers the direct accounting costs of the program. Three models were developed and analyzed. Ultimately, all three models resulted in a deficit over the life of the project. However, it is important to note that benefits were likely understated because this CBA did not take into consideration the environmental or social benefits that exist from a composting program at …

Open Ensemble Modeling Of Confined Electrolytes, Serban Zamfir Jan 2020

Open Ensemble Modeling Of Confined Electrolytes, Serban Zamfir

Theses and Dissertations

The main purpose of my study was to work towards better understanding the behavior of salt solutions in nanoconfinements and its causes. To this end I have developed an in-house C++ code that can perform notoriously challenging open ensemble Monte Carlo molecular simulations, calculate relevant thermodynamic and extract structural information about each system. I use this code in my first project which deals with the intrusion/extrusion of aqueous NaCl into a nanopore open to a pressurized bulk environment. For my second project, I study the effect of explicitly accounting for intramolecular polarization and accompanying multi-body interactions on the uptake, structure, …

Boroughs of New York City, including Queens county, turn out to be the epicenters of this infection. According to the data provided by the New York State Department of Health, most of the cases of new COVID-19 infections in New York City have been found in the Queens county where 42,023 people have tested positive, and 3221 people have died as of 20 April 2020. Person-to-person transmission and travels were implicated in the initial spread of the outbreaks, but factors …

Molecular Typing Of Rickettsia Akari, Marina E. Eremeeva Jan 2020

Molecular Typing Of Rickettsia Akari, Marina E. Eremeeva

Biostatistics, Epidemiology & Environmental Health Sciences: Faculty Publications

Rickettsia akari is an obligate intracellular bacterium that causes smallpox rickettsia. Rickettsia akari is an atypical member of the rickettsia spotted fever (SFG) group because it circulates in gamasid mites; however, only limited data are available regarding the degree of genetic diversity of R. akari isolates. We examined 13 isolates of R. akari isolated from humans, rodents, and ticks in the United States, the countries of the former USSR, and the former Yugoslavia for the period from 1946 to 2003 for diversity in the composition of tandem repeats (TR) and intergenic regions (IGR). Using the Tandem Repeat Finder software (http://tandem.bu.edu) …

Toward Efficient Automation Of Interpretable Machine Learning Boosting, Nathan Neuhaus Jan 2020

Toward Efficient Automation Of Interpretable Machine Learning Boosting, Nathan Neuhaus

All Master's Theses

Developing efficient automated methods for Interpretable Machine Learning (IML) is an important and long-term goal in the field of Artificial Intelligence. Currently the Machine Learning landscape is dominated by Neural Networks (NNs) and Support Vector Machines (SVMs), models which are often highly accurate. Despite high accuracy, such models are essentially “black boxes” and therefore are too risky for situations like healthcare where real lives are at stake. In such situations, so called “glass-box” models, such as Decision Trees (DTs), Bayesian Networks (BNs), and Logic Relational (LR) models are often preferred, however can succumb to accuracy limitations. Unfortunately, having to choose …

Pollution is a major environmental issue around the world. Despite the growing use and impact of commercial vehicles, recent research has been conducted with minimizing pollution as the primary objective to be reduced. The objective of this project is to implement different optimization algorithms to solve this problem. A basic model is created using the Vehicle Routing Problem (VRP) which is further extended to the Pollution Routing Problem (PRP). The basic model is updated using a Monte Carlo Algorithm (MCA). The data set contains 180 data files with a combination of 10, 15, 20, 25, 50, 75, 100, 150, and …

Image Features For Tuberculosis Classification In Digital Chest Radiographs, Brian Hooper Jan 2020

Image Features For Tuberculosis Classification In Digital Chest Radiographs, Brian Hooper

All Master's Theses

Tuberculosis (TB) is a respiratory disease which affects millions of people each year, accounting for the tenth leading cause of death worldwide, and is especially prevalent in underdeveloped regions where access to adequate medical care may be limited. Analysis of digital chest radiographs (CXRs) is a common and inexpensive method for the diagnosis of TB; however, a trained radiologist is required to interpret the results, and is subject to human error. Computer-Aided Detection (CAD) systems are a promising machine-learning based solution to automate the diagnosis of TB from CXR images. As the dimensionality of a high-resolution CXR image is very …

Image Forgery Detection With Machine Learning, Lubna Alzamil Jan 2020

Image Forgery Detection With Machine Learning, Lubna Alzamil

All Master's Theses

The issue of forged images is currently a global issue that spreads mainly via social networks. Image forgery has weakened Internet users’ confidence in digital images. In recent years, extensive research has been devoted to the development of new techniques to combat various image forgery attacks. Detecting fake images prevents counterfeit photos from being used to deceive or cause harm to others. In this thesis, we propose methods using the error level analysis algorithm to detect manipulated images. We show that our combination of image pre-processing and machine learning techniques is an efficient approach to detecting image forgery attacks.

Sampling The Local Fare: Fishes At The Sam Israel House Pit (45gr76), Soap Lake, Washington, Adam Fruge Jan 2020

Sampling The Local Fare: Fishes At The Sam Israel House Pit (45gr76), Soap Lake, Washington, Adam Fruge

All Master's Theses

The Sam Israel site is a precontact archaeological complex with numerous fish bones at the north end of Soap Lake, Washington. Excavated in 1976, the fish remains recovered from there were never fully analyzed prior to this research. Since this inland Columbia Plateau site had thousands of fish bones, it contained untapped potential for our understanding of ancient local fish procurement. As such, I conducted a detailed analysis of 2,862 fish bone specimens from the Sam Israel House Pit locus to: study a larger sample of fish bones in greater detail than was done before; compare the distribution of fishes …

Documenting The Earthquake History Of The Thousand Springs Fault In Summer Lake Basin, Oregon, Usa, Elizabeth Curtiss Jan 2020

Documenting The Earthquake History Of The Thousand Springs Fault In Summer Lake Basin, Oregon, Usa, Elizabeth Curtiss

All Master's Theses

Defining seismic hazards in low-strain-rate regions such as the northwestern Basin and Range can be difficult due to the infrequency of earthquakes. Revealing the earthquake records of low-strain-rate regions can refine our understanding of the variability of earthquake sizes and recurrence intervals, however, which can ultimately improve hazard analysis. Four active normal faults form the Summer Lake basin, in the northwestern Basin and Range: The Thousand Springs (TSF), Ana River (ARF), Slide Mountain, and Winter Ridge faults. Other than the TSF, the faults in the Summer Lake basin have documented histories that include surface-rupturing (>M6) earthquakes. Scarps along the …
