A Review Of The Effects Of Dietary Restriction, Dehydration, And Caffeine Withdrawal On Cognition: Implications For A Disabled Submarine Scenario, Sarah Chabal
Journal of Human Performance in Extreme Environments
In the event that submariners become trapped aboard a disabled submarine (DISSUB), they must perform a multitude of cognitively demanding tasks in order to maximize their likelihood of survival. During this time, submariners will also be forced to endure poor living conditions, including drastic changes to their nutrition. These nutritional changes have the potential to impair submariners’ cognitive functioning and affect operational performance, which could jeopardize survival; however, the effects of DISSUB nutrition on cognitive performance are not well understood. This review first describes the unique nutritional conditions that submariners will experience in a DISSUB scenario, including the change to …

Fatigue Crack Growth And Fatigue Fracture Morphology Of Recycled Rubber Powder Filled Nr/Br Blend Compound, Ismawi Hassim Dh Abang, Frank Abraham, John Summerscales
School of Engineering, Computing and Mathematics
The effect of two different types and particle sizes (micronised cryo-ground 74 m or ambient ground 400 m) of recycled rubber powder (RRP) were studied during fatigue crack growth (FCG) in NR/BR compound using a fracture mechanics approach. Absolute and relative hysteresis losses using single-edge notch tensile (SENT) specimens were determined with a displacement controlled strain compensating for permanent set of the samples throughout the FCG experiments. Differences in relative hysteresis loss showed that additional energy dissipation, due to multiple new crack surfaces at the crack tip, contributes to the FCG of the RRP compounds. At higher tearing energy, beside …

Dust Palliative Mean Particle Residence Time Calculator, Jonathan Metzgar
CSET Project Reports
Previous research efforts at UAF have established that dust palliative performance may be compared using a calculation called the mean particle residence time (tau, or MPRT). The MPRT value is computed using linear regression techniques to determine the time when the dust palliative loses its effectiveness. A technician tests the palliative using a dustfall column and a nephelometer to measure the concentration of PM10 over time. The technician needs to manually process this raw data with an Excel spreadsheet making dust palliative MPRT reports time-consuming and prone to error. Finally, the certifying technician prints and files the report for future …

Addressing Ad-Blocking Challenges In Online Publishing: A Data Science Approach, Shuai Zhao
Dissertations
The revenue of online display advertising is expected to reach 389 billion U.S. dollars globally in 2021. However, the fast increase in ad-blocker usage impacts publishers' ad revenue and the ad-supported free web. Faced with this problem, many online publishers choose either to cooperate with ad-blocker software companies to show acceptable ads or to build a wall that requires users to whitelist (i.e., turn off ad-blockers) for content access. This dissertation aims to deepen the understanding of existing counter-ad-blocking strategies and further explore how to address ad-blocking challenges through a data science approach.
The dissertation starts with investigating and identifying …

Investigating The Lack Of Consensus Among Sentiment Analysis Tools, Ma Palomino, Ap Varma, A Connelly
School of Engineering, Computing and Mathematics
Sentiment analysis, the classification of human emotion expressed in text, has the potential to enhance our ability to analyse the ever growing amount of information published each day on social media. Thus, we compare here seven of the most well-regarded sentiment analysis tools, and conclude that none of them is sufficiently reliable to be used on its own. Combining them and relying on their results only when various tools reach an agreement seems to be a better option. The pros and cons of such an approach are discussed in this paper, while providing recommendations related to the usability of the …
