Inclusion For Speech-Language Pathology Minority Graduate Students, Teresa Michelle Roberts Nov 2020

Inclusion For Speech-Language Pathology Minority Graduate Students, Teresa Michelle Roberts

Dissertations and Theses

Speech-language pathologists provide assessment and intervention for communication, cognition, and swallowing disorders for individuals across the lifespan in educational, medical, and private practice settings. The demographics of professionals in the field do not reflect those of the general public in regard to race and ethnicity, gender, socioeconomic status, LGBTQ+, and disability. Lack of representation of minorities limits research, policy, and services designed to serve diverse populations. Although initiatives have sought to address lack of diversity of speech-language pathologists, limited research on the graduate training experience for minority students is available. Since a master's degree is required to become a speech-language …

Toward Spirit-Empowered Leadership Distinctives: A Literature Review, Daniel D. Isgrigg

Spiritus: ORU Journal of Theology

This essay is a literature review that seeks to chart the landscape of leadership from a distinctively Spirit-empowered perspective. The topic of Spirit-empowered leadership distinctives is still in its infancy as few in the Spirit-empowered Movement have reflected deeply on the distinctive characteristics or competencies reflective of Pentecostal-Charismatic spirituality. This essay reviews the existing academic works related to definitions of Spirit-empowered leadership as a way of beginning the conversation among scholars.

Chad: Human Fertility, Crop Production And Changing Weather Patterns, Jake Organ Nov 2020

Chad: Human Fertility, Crop Production And Changing Weather Patterns, Jake Organ

Economics ETDs

The subject of this dissertation is the effect of changing weather patterns on human fertility in Chad, Sahelian Africa. There is a body of literature on the effect of extreme weather events-usually associated with large-scale mortality-and human fertility. However, there is less of a body of literature on the effects of less extreme changing weather patterns and human fertility. Chad has known substantial warming since the late 1960s, hence I use rising heat as a proxy for changing weather patterns. Using GIS-coded fertility and weather data, I look for correlations between the birth rate and the number of days in …

The Impact Of Federal, State, And Local Policy On The Pedagogy Of Ell Assessment In New Mexico Public Schools, Cheryl Anne Ford Ed.D. Nov 2020

The Impact Of Federal, State, And Local Policy On The Pedagogy Of Ell Assessment In New Mexico Public Schools, Cheryl Anne Ford Ed.D.

Teacher Education, Educational Leadership & Policy ETDs

ABSTRACT

The impetus for this study came from the understanding that bilingualism and multilingualism are innate components of America’s immigrant and Native American cultural fabric. With issues ranging from writing ELL policy to developing English as a second language (ESL), pedagogical support, to identifying the non-static, cultural, and linguistic needs of ELLs, their intersection and impact on bilingual education in New Mexico’s public schools was the focus of this study. To ensure a nonbiased focus on that narrow intersection, a qualitative methodology with a grounded-theory genre and an emic approach was used to address the research question: How do cumulative …

On Many Routes: Internal, European, And Transatlantic Migration In The Late Habsburg Empire, Annemarie Steidl Nov 2020

On Many Routes: Internal, European, And Transatlantic Migration In The Late Habsburg Empire, Annemarie Steidl

Central European Studies

On Many Routes is about the history of human migration. With a focus on the Habsburg Empire, this innovative work presents an integrated and creative study of spatial mobilities: from short to long term, and intranational and inter-European to transatlantic. Migration was not just relegated to city folk, but likewise was the reality for rural dwellers, and we gain a better understanding of how sending and receiving states and shipping companies worked together to regulate migration and shape populations.

Bringing historical census data, governmental statistics, and ship manifests into conversation with centuries-old migration patterns of servants, agricultural workers, seasonal laborers, …

When Special Education And Disability Studies Intertwine: Addressing Educational Inequities Through Processes And Programming, Audri Sandoval Gomez, Aja Mckee Nov 2020

When Special Education And Disability Studies Intertwine: Addressing Educational Inequities Through Processes And Programming, Audri Sandoval Gomez, Aja Mckee

Education Faculty Articles and Research

The inception of the Education for All Handicapped Children Act (EAHCA) in 1975 provided hope and the opportunity for equitable educational experiences for individuals with disabilities. Forty-five years later, the United States remains in a deficit-driven, medical model educational system with deeply rooted inequities continuing to segregate students because of their disability. A disability studies in education framework allows for complex components of teaching and programming for students with disabilities to be explored in a practical way that promotes inclusive education for all students. Examining special education practices through a social model of disability with a focus on ability and …

Working Toward Linguistically And Culturally Responsive Math Teaching Through A Year-Long Urban Teacher Training Program For English Learners, Kim Song, Sarah A. Coppersmith Nov 2020

Working Toward Linguistically And Culturally Responsive Math Teaching Through A Year-Long Urban Teacher Training Program For English Learners, Kim Song, Sarah A. Coppersmith

Educator Preparation & Leadership Faculty Works

This qualitative study examined how participating in-service teachers demonstrated linguistically and culturally responsive mathematical teaching (LCRMT) competences after they completed a year-long National Professional Development Program grant-funded project. A two-dimensional LCRMT framework was developed to measure participating teachers’ mathematical and mathematics-related competences. The qualitative data source was from three in-service teachers’ observations and interviews. The interview and observation data were analyzed using open and axial coding and activity systems. Three themes emerged: 1) mathematics-related content teaching practices, 2) tools to support mathematics learning, and 3) teachers’ mindsets and attitudes towards English Learner (EL) teaching. The researchers then compared verbatim examples …

Enhancing Adult Refugees’ Metacognition, Motivation, And Multiliteracies: Metacognitive Instruction Within An E-Learning Environment, Imelda V. Bangun Nov 2020

Enhancing Adult Refugees’ Metacognition, Motivation, And Multiliteracies: Metacognitive Instruction Within An E-Learning Environment, Imelda V. Bangun

USF Tampa Graduate Theses and Dissertations

Adult refugees without print literacy are a diverse group. The reasons adult refugees lack print literacy varies widely among individuals. While meeting the needs of these adults is indeed important, instructors who work with these learners are frequently challenged to provide suitable e-learning environments in which these learners can thrive. Accordingly, the present study aimed to achieve four goals. First, it investigated the effectiveness of explicit metacognitive instruction within an e-learning environment in enhancing the motivational profile of adult refugees with limited literacy. Second, it researched the effectiveness of explicit metacognitive instruction accompanied with an e-learning environment in enhancing the …

Countermeasures Against Various Network Attacks Using Machine Learning Methods, Yi Li

USF Tampa Graduate Theses and Dissertations

With the rapid development of a computer network, our lives are already inseparable from it. Wireless Fidelity (Wi-Fi) is in use everywhere; more and more devices are connected to the Internet, and many companies and individuals tend to store their data and information online. Furthermore, it is now very convenient to communicate with each other through email and text messages. However, widespread networks also provide more attack surfaces for attackers. There are a variety of network attacks aimed at information theft. To better defend against those network attacks, one needs to have a broad knowledge of existing attacks. In this …

Visualization Dynamics And Ideal L2 Self: Exploring L2 Learner Motivation In A Study Abroad Context, Dan Zhong Nov 2020

Visualization Dynamics And Ideal L2 Self: Exploring L2 Learner Motivation In A Study Abroad Context, Dan Zhong

USF Tampa Graduate Theses and Dissertations

Second language learner motivation research has witnessed a transition from a historically static approach to a more dynamic approach, yielding extensive research during the past decade. Dörnyei (2005, 2009) proposed a vigorous motivation framework, the Second Language Motivational Self System (L2MSS) that highlights the dynamic nature of learner motivation. The L2MSS consists of three main constructs: the ideal L2 self, the ought-to L2 self, and the learning experiences (Dörnyei, 2005). This study uses the L2MSS framework as the theoretical basis to explore learners’ motivation and learning experiences in a study abroad context. Empirical studies using this framework to explore L2 …

Exploring Adult Indigenous Latinxs’ English Language Identity Expressions And Agency: A Malp®-Informed Photovoice Study, Andrea Enikő Lypka Nov 2020

Exploring Adult Indigenous Latinxs’ English Language Identity Expressions And Agency: A Malp®-Informed Photovoice Study, Andrea Enikő Lypka

USF Tampa Graduate Theses and Dissertations

Scholars historically emphasized literate learners’ additional language trajectories. In countries with increasingly large numbers of limited-literate adult language learners, there is an urgent need to inspire limited-literate adults to speak out and be heard. To address the needs of adult language learners with inconsistent schooling, and the ways their identities, agency, and social power influence opportunities for participation in the target language communities of practice, scholars need to implement bottom-up and responsive curricular and research innovations. To this end, informed by poststructuralist and transdisciplinary understandings of English language development, I investigated the identity work (self-positioning and other-positioning) and agency deployment …

Hearing Aid Acclimatization In The Context Of Central Gain Mechanisms, Peter J. Hutchison Nov 2020

Hearing Aid Acclimatization In The Context Of Central Gain Mechanisms, Peter J. Hutchison

USF Tampa Graduate Theses and Dissertations

The primary goals of this dissertation were to 1) identify markers of central gain in the auditory system following short-term acoustic attenuation via earplugging and acoustic enhancement via sound generators, and 2) determine if acoustic enhancement is effective in modulating central gain in older adults with age-related hearing loss, and if so, to what extent. Additionally, a further goal of this dissertation was to explore the possibility that central gain is related hearing aid acclimatization. The results described in Chapter 2 are further evidence that altering acoustic input to the peripheral auditory system modulates central auditory plasticity and is evident …

Mapping Narrative Transactions: A Method/Framework For Exploring Multimodal Documents As Social Semiotic Sites For Ethnographic Study, Anne W. Anderson Nov 2020

Mapping Narrative Transactions: A Method/Framework For Exploring Multimodal Documents As Social Semiotic Sites For Ethnographic Study, Anne W. Anderson

USF Tampa Graduate Theses and Dissertations

This work grew from my attempts to find a method for studying a body of editorial cartoons—multi-modal documents producing cross-modal responses—that were created and published in an earlier time period, in order to answer questions about the culture in which the cartoons were produced and read. Initially my questions included wondering about the topics cartoonists addressed, the narratives cartoonists created to address the topics, how the narratives were framed, and in what ways the narratives might have been seen as attempts to shape the larger cultural discourse around the topics. However, given the number of possible combinations of information streams …

Spanish In New Mexico: A Study Of Nuevomexicano Words, Mario Del Ángel Nov 2020

Spanish In New Mexico: A Study Of Nuevomexicano Words, Mario Del Ángel

Shared Knowledge Conference

New Mexican traditional Spanish is changing, evolving from what has been reported since the earlier pioneering studies in the Spanish language of New Mexico more than 100 years ago by professor Aurelio Espinoza . According to Travis and Villa (2011), a key factor has been the contact with Mexican Spanish from immigrants in New Mexico. Another factor is the repressive language policies and constitutional rights regarding language in the state of New Mexico (Gonzales-Berry, 2000). Bills (1997), foresees the eventual demise of the local traditional Spanish variety of New Mexico while other authors, Waltermire (2015), propose a possible mixture between …

The Sociolinguistics Of Mixtecos In Rural Northwestern Oregon, Carlos Enrique Ibarra Nov 2020

The Sociolinguistics Of Mixtecos In Rural Northwestern Oregon, Carlos Enrique Ibarra

Shared Knowledge Conference

Millions born and raised in Mexico do not have Spanish as their first language. Vast pockets of the country are populated by speakers of an indigenous language, for whom Spanish is as foreign as English. One of the states with the highest number of indigenous peoples and languages is Oaxaca, in southwestern Mexico. There, the Mixteco peoples constitute one of the largest groups who have kept their own languages as their primary vehicle of communication, over Spanish for 500 years. For over a century, the Mixtecos have traveled along the west coasts of Mexico and the United States, following agricultural …

Collective Teacher-Researcher Inquiry: Localizing School-Based Curriculum Development In Diversified Hong Kong Schooling Contexts, Zheng Zhang, Sally Wai-Yan Wan, Lai Ha Chan, Pui-Ying Lorelei Kwan, Lai-Ling Sandy Tam, Eunice Wai-Po Wan Nov 2020

Collective Teacher-Researcher Inquiry: Localizing School-Based Curriculum Development In Diversified Hong Kong Schooling Contexts, Zheng Zhang, Sally Wai-Yan Wan, Lai Ha Chan, Pui-Ying Lorelei Kwan, Lai-Ling Sandy Tam, Eunice Wai-Po Wan

Journal of Practitioner Research

Responding to a recent call for turning a focus on advancing practices in curriculum studies, this paper reports collective memory work that disrupted academics’ hegemonic voices in School-Based Curriculum Development (SBCD) studies and elicited teachers’ stories about their school-based curriculum development (SBCD) practices. With post-colonialism as the theoretical underpinning, we explored how the Western-centric construct of SBCD was recontextualized in various Hong Kong school contexts. Findings revealed teachers’ struggles with hegemonic discourses that constrained their autonomy in SBCD projects to benefit diverse learners, such as the accountability mechanism, linguistic imperialism, Western-centrism, and top-down curriculum decision-making. Situated in the local realities …

Determining The Impact Of The Anabaptists Using Bullinger’S Propaganda Strategies In Von Dem Unverschampten Fräfel, Jovanna Shirky Nov 2020

Determining The Impact Of The Anabaptists Using Bullinger’S Propaganda Strategies In Von Dem Unverschampten Fräfel, Jovanna Shirky

West Virginia University Historical Review

Many scholars of the Reformation contend that the Anabaptist movement did not significantly impact the society of its day. However, my analysis of Heinrich Bullinger’s anti-Anabaptist work Von dem unverschampten fräfel, ergerlichem verwyrren unnd unwarhafftem leeren der selbsgesandten Widertöuffern indicates that the Anabaptists did pose a significant threat to the socioreligious structures that both the mainstream Reformation and Catholicism endorsed. By analyzing Bullinger’s propaganda strategies within the work, I find that the beliefs and practices of the Anabaptists challenged the most basic structures of society, thus alarming Bullinger and others who opposed the movement. Bullinger’s language within the work and …

The Translation Of Modern English Poetry Into Arabic: Treating The Idiosyncrasies Of Content And Form, Nabil Alawi, Samah Jarrad Nov 2020

The Translation Of Modern English Poetry Into Arabic: Treating The Idiosyncrasies Of Content And Form, Nabil Alawi, Samah Jarrad

An-Najah University Journal for Research - B (Humanities)

The new rhetoric of modern poetry which is characterized by conciseness and ambiguity has set it different from other poetic movements in English which in turn has made it the central focus of many researchers and scholars leading many of them to write about the ‘distinction’ of this type of literature. This study tackles the translation issue of modern poetry in view of the idiosyncrasies of content and form. The study investigates the issue of foregrounding following Geoffrey Leech’s (1969) linguistic deviation theory with special focus on lexical, grammatical and semantic deviations with the assumption that the idiosyncrasies in the …

The Phenomenon Of Linguistic Lisp Between Acquisition And Disability (Manifestations, Causes, Treatment), Ahmad Bani Atta

An-Najah University Journal for Research - B (Humanities)

Lisping is probably one of the problems that is viewed by Arab communities as one of the silly and easy problems. Therefore, parents, due to lack of health knowledge,do not take it seriously when one of their children suffers from this problem. The truth of the matter is that a speaker may suffer from acquired, health, or physiological speaking problems. This makes us classify it as an illness, which might exceed in number the registered numbers of other physical illnesses since the therapeutic process might take much more time to achieve full recovery. It could start with oral practice and end with surgical …

Elitnauristet Yuutllu Calillgutkut Elitnaurluki Elitnaurat: Yup’Ik Peoples And Public-School Principals In Southwestern Alaska, A Quantitative Survey Of Cultural Values, Anthony Graham

Dissertations

This dissertation explores the alignment between local school principals’ values and ideas about what should be taught in their public schools and the values of the local Yup’ik communities in which those principals serve. A review of scholarly literature served as a basis for identifying Yup’ik values and a survey which measured principals’ beliefs about the importance and priority of those values was used to collect a variety of data. Findings showed both differences and similarities between principals’ priorities and Yup’ik values and was clear that the similarities and differences were predominantly related to the number of years of a …
