Rebuilding As Research: Noongar Song, Language And Ways Of Knowing, Clint Bracknell
Rebuilding As Research: Noongar Song, Language And Ways Of Knowing, Clint Bracknell
Research outputs 2014 to 2021
In Australia, language and song are integral to maintaining Aboriginal knowledge systems. British colonisation and ensuing Australian government policies of assimilation have adversely impacted these knowledge systems, at least partially by functioning to dramatically diminish the vitality of many Aboriginal languages and song traditions. As a Noongar researcher motivated by community-oriented goals, I employ a multidisciplinary approach to enhance the revitalisation of the endangered Noongar language and its song traditions in the south coast region of Western Australia. This work draws on established methods from ethnomusicology and linguistics, engaging with community knowledge-holders and archival records to rebuild repertoire while increasing …
The Emotional Business Of Noongar Song, Clint Bracknell
The Emotional Business Of Noongar Song, Clint Bracknell
Research outputs 2014 to 2021
This article explores connections between history, emotion and Aboriginal song in the south of Western Australia. Songs performed in the Noongar language in the 19th and early 20th centuries provide insight into the emotional worlds of Western Australia’s past. Historical documentation reveals how Noongar sang to deal with rapid changes associated with colonisation, with song acting as a conduit for cultural resilience. Today, the Noongar language is endangered, and few people remember the old songs. Community aspirations to claim, consolidate and enhance cultural heritage have driven a collaborative process of translating, interpreting and revitalising some of this repertoire. Listening to …

© 2020 by the authors. Licensee MDPI, Basel, Switzerland. Dietary flavonoids are vasoactive phytochemicals with promising anti-inflammatory properties. We aimed to assess the associations between baseline intakes of six commonly consumed flavonoid subclasses and 10-year incidence of age-related hearing loss. At baseline, 1691 participants aged 50+ years had information on dietary intakes and hearing status. Hearing loss was defined as the pure-tone average of frequencies 0.5, 1.0, 2.0, and 4.0 kHz > 25 dB hearing level (HL). Dietary data were collected through a semi-quantitative food frequency questionnaire. The flavonoid content of foods was estimated using US databases. During the 10-year follow-up, …

© 2020 by the authors. The use of new, digitally enabled innovations, such as building information modeling (BIM), raises issues such as the delineation of a competent leader. Even though BIM-based competency assessment models have become essential tools for maximizing the potential values of BIM implementation, the current competency models provide limited focus on leadership aspects that facilitate and enhance the BIM implementation efforts. This paper seeks to identify the specific competencies required for BIM implementation and examines the relationships between these competencies. Thirty-two experts from around the globe investigated a total of 15 leadership competencies under three categories pertaining …

Fall And Activity Detection Framework On A Robotic Platform For Older Person Care, Frederico Belmonte Klein
Fall And Activity Detection Framework On A Robotic Platform For Older Person Care, Frederico Belmonte Klein
School of Engineering, Computing and Mathematics Theses
This thesis describes the classification human activity for the purpose of detecting falls, later extended to multiple activities. This was done with the final intention of implementing a robotic companion for older persons that can provide a certain level of automated care in case of some sort of emergency. The complexity of this work, combined with restrictions of the robot, motivated a creation of an infrastructure abstraction to allow deferred (decentralized) processing. The initial work was done by implementing classifiers that work use pre-processed skeleton data extracted from RGBD sensors and implements some steps in order to make classification robust …
Author Verification Of Electronic Messaging Systems, Abdulaziz Altamimi
Author Verification Of Electronic Messaging Systems, Abdulaziz Altamimi
School of Engineering, Computing and Mathematics Theses
Messaging systems have become a hugely popular new paradigm for sending and delivering text messages; however, online messaging platforms have also become an ideal place for criminals due to their anonymity, ease of use and low cost. Therefore, the ability to verify the identity of individuals involved in criminal activity is becoming increasingly important. The majority of research in this area has focused on traditional authorship problems that deal with single-domain datasets and large bodies of text. Few research studies have sought to explore multi-platform author verification as a possible solution to problems around forensics and security. Therefore, this research …
Narratives Of Creativity Among Social Care Educators In Irish Higher Education, Louisa Goss
Narratives Of Creativity Among Social Care Educators In Irish Higher Education, Louisa Goss
Theses
Research on creativity in the delivery of social care highlights growing evidence of its importance for the wellbeing and quality of life of those in receipt of care, as well as benefits for the workforce. However, what is less well understood and overlooked in the literature is how creativity is conceptualised and operationalised in practice and education. This thesis attends to this gap in research from the perspective of social care educators. With the aim of deepening understanding of higher education teachers’ construction of creativity, the study explores small stories about creativity from six educators teaching into an undergraduate degree …

Named Entity Recognition Based On A Graph Structure, David Muñoz, Fernando Pérez Téllez, David Pinto
Articles
The identification of indirect relationships between texts from different sources makes the task of text mining useful when the goal is to obtain the most valuable information from a set of texts. That is why in the field of information retrieval the correct recognition of named entities plays an important role when extracting valuable information in large amounts of text. Therefore, it is important to propose techniques that improve the NER classifiers in order to achieve the correct recognition of named entities. In this work, a graph structure for storage and enrichment of named entities is proposed. It makes use …
Language Model Co-Occurrence Linking For Interleaved Activity Discovery, Eoin Rogers, Robert J. Ross, John D. Kelleher
Language Model Co-Occurrence Linking For Interleaved Activity Discovery, Eoin Rogers, Robert J. Ross, John D. Kelleher
Conference papers
As ubiquitous computer and sensor systems become abundant, the potential for automatic identification and tracking of human behaviours becomes all the more evident. Annotating complex human behaviour datasets to achieve ground truth for supervised training can however be extremely labour-intensive, and error prone. One possible solution to this problem is activity discovery: the identification of activities in an unlabelled dataset by means of an unsupervised algorithm. This paper presents a novel approach to activity discovery that utilises deep learning based language production models to construct a hierarchical, tree-like structure over a sequential vector of sensor events. Our approach differs from …
Modelling Interleaved Activities Using Language Models, Eoin Rogers, Robert J. Ross, John D. Kelleher
Modelling Interleaved Activities Using Language Models, Eoin Rogers, Robert J. Ross, John D. Kelleher
Conference papers
We propose a new approach to activity discovery, based on the neural language modelling of streaming sensor events. Our approach proceeds in multiple stages: we build binary links between activities using probability distributions generated by a neural language model trained on the dataset, and combine the binary links to produce complex activities. We then use the activities as sensor events, allowing us to build complex hierarchies of activities. We put an emphasis on dealing with interleaving, which represents a major challenge for many existing activity discovery systems. The system is tested on a realistic dataset, demonstrating it as a promising …

Mutual Information Decay Curves And Hyper-Parameter Grid Search Design For Recurrent Neural Architectures, Abhijit Mahalunkar, John Kelleher
Conference papers
We present an approach to design the grid searches for hyper-parameter optimization for recurrent neural architectures. The basis for this approach is the use of mutual information to analyze long distance dependencies (LDDs) within a dataset. We also report a set of experiments that demonstrate how using this approach, we obtain state-of-the-art results for DilatedRNNs across a range of benchmark datasets.

Brexit: Psychometric Profiling The Political Salubrious Through Machine Learning: Predicting Personality Traits Of Boris Johnson Through Twitter Political Text, James Usher, Pierpaolo Dondio
Conference papers
Whilst the CIA have been using psychometric profiling for decades, Cambridge Analytica showed that people's psychological characteristics can be accurately predicted from their digital footprints, such as their Facebook or Twitter accounts. To exploit this form of psychological assessment from digital footprints, we propose machine learning methods for assessing political personality from Twitter. We have extracted the tweet content of Prime Minster Boris Johnson’s Twitter account and built three predictive personality models based on his Twitter political content. We use a Multi-Layer Perceptron Neural network, a Naive Bayes multinomial model and a Support Machine Vector model to predict the OCEAN …

Tripping Over The Other: Could Psychedelics Increase Empathy?, Emily Blatchford, Stephen Bright, Liam Engel
Research outputs 2014 to 2021
There is increasing evidence that psychedelic-assisted psychotherapy is effective for a range of psy-chological conditions. There are likely numerous mechanisms of action that contribute to these clinicaleffects. One such mechanism of action might involve psychedelics increasing levels of empathicfunctioning. This paper synthesises research concerning the relationship between psychedelics andempathy, emphasising neuroscientific and clinical contexts. We conclude that neuropsychological andclinical evidence imply psychedelics could lead to increased empathic functioning. The effects of psy-chedelics on the 5-HT system, default mode network, neural connectivity and ego dissolution areimplicated in these changes. Changes in empathic functioning also likely relate to increases in thepersonality trait …

Electronic Theses and Dissertations Archive
With reports of teacher shortages across many states, the discussion in education turns to how to retain high-quality teachers. The duration that teachers remain in classroom positions is decreasing, and the high turnover rate has a direct impact on student performance. Socially and politically teachers are scrutinized for declining test scores which mostly recently led to a major reform shift known as Common Core. The continued scrutiny and micromanagement through reform changes have a substantial impact on the professionalization of teaching and the professional identity of teachers themselves. Through a pragmatic lens, narrative inquiry was used to better understand how …
