A Corpus-Driven Study Of The English Present Perfect In General And Textbook Corpora, Chanakarn Chareonkul
A Corpus-Driven Study Of The English Present Perfect In General And Textbook Corpora, Chanakarn Chareonkul
Chulalongkorn University Theses and Dissertations (Chula ETD)
Corpus linguistic research has consistently shown that there is an interconnectedness between patterns and meanings in language use (Hunston and Francis, 2000; Römer, 2006). With regard to the present perfect, little attention has been paid to the relationship between verb patterns and meanings expressed through the tense. This may be one of the reasons why second language learners frequently encounter difficulties in mastering the English present perfect. As Yoshimura et al. (2014) argue, language learners are likely to have a problem with the form/pattern-meaning mapping in the use of the present perfect. To fill this gap, the present study takes …

This study aimed to 1) investigate the effects of reading instruction using Backward Design framework and citizenship theme (BD&CT) to enhance English reading comprehension of tenth grade Thai EFL students, 2) investigate the effects of reading instruction using BD&CT to enhance social responsibility (SR) of the students, 3) explore the opinions of students towards the reading instruction using BD&CT. The participants included 36 tenth grade students who took course in English reading and writing as an additional course in the second semester of the academic year 2019. The research instruments were English reading comprehension test and social responsibility questionnaire, which …
Development Of An Online Course Using Situated Learning And Esa Method To Enhance English Oral Communication Ability Of University Administrative Staff, Tatchakrit Matyakhan
Development Of An Online Course Using Situated Learning And Esa Method To Enhance English Oral Communication Ability Of University Administrative Staff, Tatchakrit Matyakhan
Chulalongkorn University Theses and Dissertations (Chula ETD)
Since English is the primary mode of communication at institutions of higher education that offer international programs, university administrative staff must be able to communicate in English with academic staff, international students, and partner universities. The purpose of this research is (1) to investigate the effectiveness of an online course that combines situated learning and ESA to improve oral communication skills and (2) to capture the perceptions of university administrative staff towards such a course. The participants were 20 university administrative staff, aged from 22 to 40 years old, 14 females and 6 males, at a public university in Thailand, …
Digital Storytelling For Cambodian Undergraduate Students' Efl Reading And Digital Literacy, Vychan Otdom Hon
Digital Storytelling For Cambodian Undergraduate Students' Efl Reading And Digital Literacy, Vychan Otdom Hon
Chulalongkorn University Theses and Dissertations (Chula ETD)
The objectives of the study were threefold: (1) to investigate the effect of Digital Storytelling on Cambodian Undergraduate Students' English reading ability, (2) to explore Cambodian Undergraduate Students' perception on their digital literacy after participating in Digital Storytelling, (3) to explore Cambodian Undergraduate Students' perceptions on Digital Storytelling,. The participants of the study were English-majored students (n = 18) in the foundation year from the School of Foreign languages (SFL) at the University of Cambodia (UC). Both qualitative and quantitative data were collected. For the first research objective, a Wilcoxon Signed Rank test was implemented to determine the difference between …
A Robust System For Core Thai Natural Language Processing Technologies, Can Udomcharoenchaikit
A Robust System For Core Thai Natural Language Processing Technologies, Can Udomcharoenchaikit
Chulalongkorn University Theses and Dissertations (Chula ETD)
As the amount of unstructured textual data grows, it becomes increasingly important to build an intelligent system that can process it. Natural Language Processing (NLP) is a technology that allows a computer to exploit human languages to perform tasks. Deep learning models have shown excellent results across fundamental tasks in NLP, such as word segmentation, part-of-speech tagging, and named-entity recognition. However, in many situations, these proposed methods fail to perform well. For an NLP system to be robust, it must address issues such as out-of-vocabulary and spelling-mistakes. This thesis's research goal is to develop NLP models that can handle malformed …
Semi-Supervised Thai Sentence Segmentation Using Local And Distant Word Representations, Chanatip Saetia
Semi-Supervised Thai Sentence Segmentation Using Local And Distant Word Representations, Chanatip Saetia
Chulalongkorn University Theses and Dissertations (Chula ETD)
A sentence is typically treated as the minimal syntactic unit used for extracting valuable information from a longer piece of text. However, in written Thai, there are no explicit sentence markers. We proposed a deep learning model for the task of sentence segmentation that includes three main contributions. First, we integrate n-gram embedding as a local representation to capture word groups near sentence boundaries. Second, to focus on the keywords of dependent clauses, we combine the model with a distant representation obtained from self-attention modules. Finally, due to the scarcity of labeled data, for which annotation is difficult and time-consuming, …
Explainable Stock Price Prediction Using Technical Indicators With Short Thai Textual Information, Kittisak Prachyachuwong
Explainable Stock Price Prediction Using Technical Indicators With Short Thai Textual Information, Kittisak Prachyachuwong
Chulalongkorn University Theses and Dissertations (Chula ETD)
A stock trend prediction has been in the spotlight from the past to the present. Fortunately, there is an enormous amount of information available nowadays. There were prior attempts that have tried to forecast the trend using textual information; however, it can be further improved since they relied on fixed word embedding, and it depends on the sentiment of the whole market. In this paper, we propose a deep learning model to predict the Thailand Futures Exchange (TFEX) with the ability to analyze both numerical and textual information. We have used Thai economic news headlines from various online sources. To …
Using Automatic Speech Recognition To Assess Thai Speech Language Fluency In Montreal Cognitive Assessment (Moca), Pimarn Kantithammakorn
Using Automatic Speech Recognition To Assess Thai Speech Language Fluency In Montreal Cognitive Assessment (Moca), Pimarn Kantithammakorn
Chulalongkorn University Theses and Dissertations (Chula ETD)
The Montreal Cognitive Assessment (MoCA), a widely accepted screening tool for identifying patients with mild cognitive impairment (MCI), includes a language fluency test of verbal functioning where scores are based on the number of unique correct words produced by the test-taker. However, with different languages, it is possible that unique words may be counted differently. This study focuses on Thai as a language that differs from English in its type of word combination. We applied various automatic speech recognition (ASR) techniques to develop an assisted scoring system for the language fluency test of the MoCA with Thai language support. The …

A prevalent view in monolingual first language acquisition is that children acquire their native language. One’s first reaction is, “well, yes, how could it be otherwise?” The study of ‘heritage’ learners suggests a reconsideration of that view. Polinsky and Scontras (Polinsky & Scontras, 2019) present a fascinating review of the phenomena characterizing heritage learners and propose several underlying mechanisms to account for those phenomena. Their review encourages a broader view of language acquisition. To me it suggests that variability is the norm.
