Exploring Hip Hop Pedagogy In The Lives Of Four African American Adolescents, Roland Steele
Graduate Research Theses & Dissertations
The purpose of this case study was to examine how participation in an after-school hip hop pedagogy program influenced the social and academic lives of four African American male adolescents. The researcher viewed this study through the conceptual framework of culturally relevant teaching that incorporated hip hop pedagogy. Hip-hop is currently one of the most popular forms of music and represents the dominant culture of today’s inner-city youth. This study centered on how hip hop pedagogy is being used to educate African American male students.
The study participants consisted of four African American male adolescents who attended an after-school hip …
An Exploration Of First-Year University Students’ Conceptualizations Of Academic Reading: A Multicase Study, Jennifer C. Theriault
An Exploration Of First-Year University Students’ Conceptualizations Of Academic Reading: A Multicase Study, Jennifer C. Theriault
Graduate Research Theses & Dissertations
Research indicates that an important tenet of college readiness is the ability to comprehend complex texts and that the transition to postsecondary reading expectations and demands is often difficult for students. Further, students’ perceptions of themselves as academic readers influence their reading habits and practices. More specifically, research exploring undergraduates’ experiences with academic reading suggests that what students think about reading affects their reading choices and expectations. However, literature discussing academic reading has largely come from faculty perspective.
This study examined first-year university students’ conceptualizations of academic reading and perceptions of themselves as academic readers in order to understand how …
Learners’ Perceptions Of Wiillingness To Communicate In Myanmar, Maw Maw Tun
Learners’ Perceptions Of Wiillingness To Communicate In Myanmar, Maw Maw Tun
Graduate Research Theses & Dissertations
Willingness to communicate, defined as “readiness to enter into discourse at a particular time with a specific person or persons using second language” (MacIntyre, 1998), plays a key role in second and foreign language instruction, as greater willingness to communicate (WTC) is believed to facilitate more L2 communication. In a foreign language learning context, classroom WTC is highly influenced by classroom environment factors as well as international posture, which is hypothesized to capture a general attitude to the international community and foreign language learning. Given the importance of willingness to communicate in language learning, this study examines Myanmar EFL learners’ …

UNL Faculty Course Portfolios
The purpose of this benchmark portfolio was to trace the process of designing, teaching and assessing TEAC 413M: Teaching Multilingual Learners in Content Areas, a required course for the B.Ed secondary education major. My objectives for this portfolio are to: a) document the impacts of different instructional strategies employed in TEAC 413M, and to b) reflect on the course success and shortcomings and develop pathways for the future course design and development. A secondary goal was to examine translation of course content into students’ own teaching and planning for their students through a variety of activities and assessments throughout the …
An Exploration Of Student Engagement And Learning Within A Newly Online Version Of Teac 861: Teaching In A Pluralistic Society - A Peer Review Of Teaching Benchmark Portfolio, Amanda R. Morales
UNL Faculty Course Portfolios
Given the current racial, economic, and socio-political tensions in K-12 education, the work of teacher preparation arguably has never been more important or difficult. This benchmark portfolio targets a core required course aimed at increased teachers’ cultural competence and equity literacy, 861: Teaching in a Pluralistic Society. In this portfolio, I focus primarily on methods and mechanisms I used to increase student engagement in and critical reflection on a social justice-oriented curriculum in a new online format. I describe the context for the course, my initial anxieties around teaching the course online for the first time, student demographics, my redesigned …

The Effectiveness Of Cannabidiol In Rheumatic Disease Pain: A Systematic Review, Mary C. Wiczek
All Graduate Theses, Dissertations, and Other Capstone Projects
Cannabinoids have long been a part of human culture and medicine, and more recently have been rediscovered for their potential use in the management of rheumatic disease pain. The objective of this review was to evaluate the known clinical effectiveness of cannabidiol treatment for rheumatic disease related pain. The legality and current regulation of these products was also reviewed to establish the current status of federal and state rules regarding their clinical use. Basic definitions of the terms used to differentiate cannabidiol from other cannabinoid products was also outlined. A systematic literature search was then conducted to explore the current …

Best Youth Education Methods For Sexually Transmitted Infection Prevention, Caitlin F. Walchonski
All Graduate Theses, Dissertations, and Other Capstone Projects
Sexual health education in the United States is inconsistent; information and methods vary from one location to another. Education plays a large role in developing safe sex practices, and despite the sexual education efforts, rates of sexually transmitted infections have risen for five consecutive years in the United States. A systematic literature review was conducted to determine the best methods for educating adolescents to promote behaviors to enhance sexual health. Multiple types of interventions have been studied including cognitive behavioral interventions, comprehensive sexual education, parent and teen dyad education, and abstinence only education. Sexual behavior is influenced by a variety …
Queer Memory In Translation: The Work Of Pedro Lemebel, Jordan Gerue
Queer Memory In Translation: The Work Of Pedro Lemebel, Jordan Gerue
All Graduate Theses, Dissertations, and Other Capstone Projects
Abstract
Translating texts produced by marginalized communities offers readers the chance to learn about the political and social realities of the marginalized in their own words. However, in the process of creating a work that can be consumed by the target audience, it is possible to omit cultural differences in a way that hinders rather than helps readers understand the original culture. By translating representative samples of the unique “crónicas” of Chilean author and artist Pedro Lemebel with attention to queer translation praxis, readers can explore and better understand the queer urban subculture of Santiago de Chile from the 1970s …

Improvising Intellectual Property In Saigon, David A. Bergan
Improvising Intellectual Property In Saigon, David A. Bergan
Vanderbilt Journal of Entertainment & Technology Law
How does intellectual property become part of the structure of social practice? The traditional answers are enforcement, education, and incentivized self-interest. This Article challenges that understanding by examining the social field of young engineers in Vietnam. In Ho Chi Minh City, Vietnam, intellectual production is not only about producing the legal commodity we call intellectual property. For many young engineers working with multinational companies, it is not about producing a product at all. It is about improving their position in society. Relying on over a year of qualitative, ethnographic fieldwork from 2012 to 2014, this Article develops a critique of …
Drawing Identities: An Ethnography Of Indigenous Comic Book Creators, Melissa Ann Kocelko
Drawing Identities: An Ethnography Of Indigenous Comic Book Creators, Melissa Ann Kocelko
Electronic Theses and Dissertations
This research examines the experiences of Indigenous comic creators when making comic books, and I aim to investigate the individual and communal motivations for creating comics. Representations of Indigenous characters and storylines have primarily been told through a white lens in mainstream comics. Within the past five years, this trend has shifted with increased academic and public attention on Indigenous comic books and the rise of comic conventions like Indigenous Pop X. I argue that these comics are acts of decolonization and self-determination where creators use comics as educational tools and as a form of cultural preservation by documenting Indigenous …
Is It Because I'M Black Or A Woman? Constructing An Intersectional And Trauma-Informed Model Of Social Support, Moriah Lynn Johnson
Is It Because I'M Black Or A Woman? Constructing An Intersectional And Trauma-Informed Model Of Social Support, Moriah Lynn Johnson
Master's Theses
Inequality in the lives of Black women comes in many forms. As Kimberle Crenshaw observed, Black women experience inequality through the criminal (in)justice system, political and popular cultural representations that stereotype and exclude Black women and when accessing much needed social services (1991). As in the tradition of Black feminist scholars like Kimberle Crenshaw and Rose M. Brewer, this paper challenges stereotypical conceptions of Black womanhood within and outside of sociology, while proposing a relationship between the scholarship and social inequalities experienced by Black women. From this framework, I examine the inequalities Black women experience when accessing social services, consider …
When Personal Raises Political: Experience Of Racial Discrimination And Distrust Of Authorities Among Children Of Immigrants, Luis Fernandez-Barutell
When Personal Raises Political: Experience Of Racial Discrimination And Distrust Of Authorities Among Children Of Immigrants, Luis Fernandez-Barutell
The Journal of Sociology & Social Welfare
Substantial research has addressed the association between welcoming or hostile contexts and sociopolitical behavior among second generation immigrants. Previous analyses have conceptualized positive elements (e.g., group solidarity) and negative factors (e.g., anti-immigration bias) related to specific outcomes, such as voting or activism. This study examined factors associated with distrust of authorities and, in particular, whether experiencing personal discrimination based on race/ethnicity is related to distrust of government and police among second generation Latinos in the United States. Our results confirmed that experiencing discrimination in two contexts (school and police) is indeed related to distrust of authorities. Recommendations for practice and …

Gesture Production And Theory Of Mind: Effective Disambiguation In Communication Through Gesture, Minju Kim, Adena Schachner
Psychology Faculty Articles and Research
People design their speech acts with their listeners in mind, accounting for their knowledge and other mental states. Is this ability specific to spoken language and co-speech gesture, or does it appear in pantomimic gestures as well? We ask whether adults flexibly shift their silent gestures to emphasize relevant information, representing different features of the target indifferent contexts. In a two-item reference game, adults gestured to a partner to indicate which object was the target.Item pairs differed in one of three features (size, shape, pattern). We found that adults were more likely to gesture a feature when it was relevant to distinguishing …

Association Between Perceived Department Chair Leadership Characteristics And Faculty Job Satisfaction, Dr. Braylon Jacob Gorman
Walden Dissertations and Doctoral Studies
Low faculty job satisfaction observed in higher education institutions can result in high rates of turnover and lack of commitment. With limited research on department chair leadership and faculty job satisfaction, there is also a gap in research in small liberal arts college settings. Guided by Avolio and Bass’s full-range leadership model, the purpose of this study was to examine the association between faculty perceptions of department chair leadership characteristics and faculty job satisfaction at 3 small, liberal arts institutions in the southeastern United States. For this nonexperimental study, the college’s self-developed Adapted Employee Satisfaction Survey was distributed to 720 …
Best Practices For Screening And Early Treatment For Hiv In The Hispanic Community, Juliana Deboviel
Best Practices For Screening And Early Treatment For Hiv In The Hispanic Community, Juliana Deboviel
Walden Dissertations and Doctoral Studies
The Hispanic community is among the ethnic minorities that are adversely affected by HIV/AIDS in the United States. HIV transmission rates and rates of death are high among Hispanic communities because of delays in HIV testing and late participation in HIV treatment, especially in the state where this study was conducted. However, advanced practices for screening and early treatment of HIV can improve patient outcomes and inform practice. Thus, this systematic review was conducted to identify the best available evidence for HIV screening and care in the Hispanic population in the Western United States that shares a border with Mexico. …
Factors Affecting Seatbelt Use Among The Deaf And Hard-Of-Hearing, Deidre G. Mott
Factors Affecting Seatbelt Use Among The Deaf And Hard-Of-Hearing, Deidre G. Mott
Walden Dissertations and Doctoral Studies
In the United States, despite the proven significant economic, health, and social benefits of seatbelt use, millions of Americans do not use seatbelts. It is known that some factors, including obesity, reduce the rates of seatbelt use; however, a lack of research exists regarding whether individuals who are deaf or hard-of-hearing (HOH) have different rates of seatbelt use. The purpose of this study was to examine the difference in seatbelt use between deaf or HOH individuals and hearing individuals after adjusting for individual-level factors (BMI, marital status, education, and access to health care). The theoretical foundation for this study was …

Leadership Strategies And Millennial Organizational Commitment, Louis Wilford
Walden Dissertations and Doctoral Studies
Managing millennial employees may present challenges to managers as the workforce demographics shifts to a population of employees who have management needs that differ from previous generations. Managers who struggle with retaining millennial employees may experience business failure. Grounded in the transformational leadership theory, the purpose of this qualitative single case study was to explore the strategies managers in the financial management industry use to harness the creativity and commitment of millennial employees to increase organizational profitability. Two financial management industry managers who successfully retained talented millennials to improve profitability were interviewed; organizational documents were a secondary data source. A …
Principal Leadership For The Establishment Of Family-School Partnership, Mickelli Dunn
Principal Leadership For The Establishment Of Family-School Partnership, Mickelli Dunn
Walden Dissertations and Doctoral Studies
The area of family engagement and its benefits to the academic outcomes of students has been well researched. Educators, including practitioners and those who prepare them, and community members need to understand more about the leadership actions of principals, especially in urban, low-income predominantly African American schools, that lead to effective communication and learning at home partnerships. The purpose of this qualitative case study was to explore the leadership actions of principals that support teachers establishing productive communication and learning at-home family engagement practices. Epstein’s school, family, and community partnership model was the framework that guided this research. Research questions …
Perceptions Of Individualized Education Plan Involvement From Hispanic Parents And Special Education Teachers, Peace Ibeanusi
Perceptions Of Individualized Education Plan Involvement From Hispanic Parents And Special Education Teachers, Peace Ibeanusi
Walden Dissertations and Doctoral Studies
Some parents of children with disabilities do not often participate in individualized educational program (IEP) meetings, which results in inadequate planning and reduced student achievement. The aim of this qualitative case study was to explore the perceptions of parent involvement in IEP meetings from Hispanic parents of English-language learners (ELLs) with disabilities and special educators. The research question pertained to the following elements central to parents’ involvement decisions: (a) parents’ beliefs, (b) self-efficacy, and (c) invitation for involvement. These elements were central in Hoover-Dempsey and Sandler’s parental involvement process model, which was the conceptual framework for the study. Using purposeful …

Minority Student Growth And Development In A Rural 4-Year College, Aisha Hall
Walden Dissertations and Doctoral Studies
At a Mid-Atlantic, 4-year, rural, higher education institution, the minority student population, 25%, is growing compared to the 9% of minority faculty representation. The purpose of this study was to examine the perceptions of minority faculty and students regarding student learning associated with minority students’ relationships to minority faculty. Critical race theory was used as part of the conceptual framework which provides a narrative on the perspectives of race and dispels myths, racial beliefs, and misrepresentations of the truth. Social learning theory was also used as part of the conceptual framework because it explains how social influences impact the beliefs …
Laughter Therapy And Coping Strategies For Dementia Patient Caregivers, Edith Ugwu
Laughter Therapy And Coping Strategies For Dementia Patient Caregivers, Edith Ugwu
Walden Dissertations and Doctoral Studies
The purpose of this research was to address a gap in the literature concerning the experiences of dementia caregivers who use laughter therapy as a coping strategy to manage their caregiving stress. Dementia caregiving involves high levels of stress, depression, and anxiety, which can cause both psychological and physical health problems for caregivers. It is, therefore, critical to identify effective coping strategies to mitigate caregiving stress. Laughter therapy is an inexpensive and readily available coping strategy that can help manage this stress. The current study used a phenomenological qualitative approach to address the research question. The transactional model of stress …
Managing Hypertension In Afro-Caribbean Immigrants Of Non-Hispanic Origin, Ann Marie Laban
Managing Hypertension In Afro-Caribbean Immigrants Of Non-Hispanic Origin, Ann Marie Laban
Walden Dissertations and Doctoral Studies
Hypertension (HTN) is a preventable disease; however, the prevalence of HTN continues to increase, especially in minority populations. Without adequate interventions, this disease can lead to severe complications such as heart disease, stroke, and death.
The United States is home to a large population of Afro-Caribbean immigrants of Non-Hispanic origin and the prevalence of this disease is high among this group. Although HTN is the leading health challenge for Afro-Caribbean immigrants of non-Hispanic origin, there were limited studies that identify nonpharmacological strategies, clinical practice guidelines, or educational programs (CPG-EP) to manage HTN in this population. This project seeks to discover …
Psychiatric Residents’ Perceptions Of Cultural Competency Training For Mental Health Care Delivery, Carol A. Matthews
Psychiatric Residents’ Perceptions Of Cultural Competency Training For Mental Health Care Delivery, Carol A. Matthews
Walden Dissertations and Doctoral Studies
Considering and respecting patients’ cultural needs is integral in providing culturally competent mental health care. In 2013, an urban community hospital conducted the Community Health Needs Assessment with patients, community stakeholders, and health care providers. The assessment revealed the need to address a more diverse patient population with culturally different health needs through training culturally diverse health care providers. Thus, the focus of this qualitative case study was on how the academic training of psychiatric residents in cultural competency affected the delivery of culturally responsive mental health patient care. The conceptual framework of Jeffery’s cultural competence and confidence model grounded …
Hispanic Adult Learners’ Support Expectations In A Higher Education Hispanic Serving Institution, Jon Mchenry
Hispanic Adult Learners’ Support Expectations In A Higher Education Hispanic Serving Institution, Jon Mchenry
Walden Dissertations and Doctoral Studies
Hispanic learners have lagged behind their White peers by about 7% in completing an associate degree within 3 years, a lag in completion that has closed to some degree over the decade of 2004 to 2014 but still persists. Since the percentage of Hispanic learners who are adults is increasing, the impact of the lag on this demographic could further increase. The purpose of this basic qualitative study was to examine the expectations Hispanic adult learners have regarding supports a community college provides, especially if it aspires to be designated as a Hispanic Serving Institution. The conceptual framework consisted of …
